I knew it! I remember him saying this in an video. Even if guru Larry is as much as an asshole as everyone's likes to say. I'm still in awe of how many games he played an part (even if minor) in development. Love his videos.
I was following your narrative that the game is bad, and then I saw that guard give you a vertical suplex and thought, yeah, there's something cool here
Trust. This game is a masterpiece that wasn't fully tapped into. Avoid PS2 and stick with PC and the controls are perfect there. Such an addictive combat once you start to understand it. He lost me when he compared it to Totally Spies lol. The story is dark and cool and I wish there were more to it. The throws are good in this game too!
@@sanctuaryBiscuit Devil May Cry 1 still has better animation work though, by far. It was even mocapped. If you play on PS2 hardware with the Dualshock 2 controller, the analog controls have perfect sensitivity values, so movement looks way more fluid. The HD Collection version lacks this, hence the movements look more stuttery.
PC Version was much better than the PS2 version. PS2 lacked enemy variety due to trying to save memory. along with other cut content. as well was just a much more buggy/stuttery experience.
yep! i've talked to the guy who done this port back in the day when he worked at Rockstar Canada/Toronto (at the time) and told me it was hell going thru it back then and the fact he tried emulating PC mouse & keyboard controls to a controller definitely wasn't the right choice. I believe there's a video out there that goes through the development history behind this game and it's PlayStation 2 port
idk, when i was a kid i saw pirate copy of oni on shelf of pirate games shop, i thought that was a jank ass game. who in the sane mind would place cheap ass anime-like picture (which is the same quality as flash datesims of that time) on the cover and sell it as full scale game? young me was quite wise. great review though, worth the wait!
Apparently in the PC version of this game you can actually carry 2 guns on you at any time. I am by default, a console player, so I can't speak from experience on that, but it is a noteworthy difference I thought was worth bringing up. It really sucks that the game translated so roughly to PS2. The PS2 is a monumentally wonderful console with a games library to match and there was so much potential for this game to be great. I'm honestly amazed there hasn't been a stellar Ghost in the Shell game before. I know a few exist but I can't really speak to their quality since I've never played any of them.
Wow. I picked up Oni a few months ago on an attempt to play through the PS2 library by release date. I DID THE EXACT SAME THING, OMG, TO THE "T". I got to level 3 without any hypo, after the boss fight I couldn't take out the first two guards blocking the path. I quit and never went back. It's still sitting on my shelf eyeballing me to finish it. Like, "Ha! try getting back the 15$ you spent on me!" Because I know I can't sell it so I feel like I need to at least protect my investment, so it wasn't for nothing lol

i discovered this game on a late night at one of those internet cafes, over 20 years ago. i loved it. animations were great, body movement and combat like i never seen and i think it looked nicer on pc than what you show here. i never got to play it again, i was poor, couldn't afford a pc, but i often remember that game. it had an impact on me.
I played the PC version back in the day and it also had issues. But the combat system and how every enemy could disarm you, pick up your gun and shoot you made this so much fun, they will gang up on you in ways where it is a game in itself to cheese out of tough areas. And with the Anniversary edition with all the mods it is a game I still have fun playing to this day. I can't think of any other run and brawl game that is just as satisfying as Oni in all these years since. Too bad it had too many technical issues at launch and the sequel ended up being cancelled.
Great video! I remeber playing the pc version of this game cause I find this cyberpunk style very cool. But the game failed to hook the 12 years old me. I played again older throught nostalgia glasses, but yeah, the game is not very good.
Fun fact that someone's probably already mentioned in comments. But the cover art for the game case was created by Larry Bundy Jr. TH-cam content creator and worth a subscription due to his obscure facts on videogames
This is the one time the Mac/PC version its the definitive version More on Window, with the amount of Mods that makes it playable in modern systems like Windows 10/11 And also change the character art to something more close to an anime art style similar to the Introduction Movie and the Cover Art
"this game has a Ok amount of combat options" Even today theirs no game with more combat mechanics than Oni, it's a a very unique experience that are in many cases bad implemented. The rule for modern melee combat games is to take control out of the player and automate as much as possible the combat, instead of give the player completely control over the character legs and arms and the possible combinations of movement that it can do with it.
in my country it was 5 R$ per game. Which at the time was about 5.50 dollars. Funny thing how it used to be almost 1 to 1. Now the dollar is worth 6x our currency lmao.
I think this was a launch PS2 game, if not it was very early. I know I rented it from Blockbuster at some point but the only thing I remember is the controls were weird and terrible
It was always heartbreaking that Rockstar gave this game that treatment. It could have been far better than it landed in. That is probably why it has such a strong following now. I also wonder if maybe emulation could help this run better since the hardware is much stronger today than it was them. Patches maybe?
Blackouts are real game stoppers and I am so glad to have bought a steam deck a few years ago.
Bought the game on launch and it was OK. The controls were different, because 3D Action games were still going through the motions to refine themselves, but I eventually got used to it. I still have the game, and after watching this video, I replayed it. It sucks now, lol.

Hey bro! I love your videos! I'm reaching out to video game content creators about a project I'm working on to get your videos on TV. I didn't see a contact email in your profile. Do you have a contact email for this kind of stuff? Keep it up! Thanks! NL
oni is more of a third person brawlers with tact on gun play. almost everybody who speaks about oni meantions its one of the best melee combat. gun play sucks and the ps2 version is dog shit.
Any cyberpunk cop-ladies fans out here?
Da.
Me
only if we are talking about motoko
yass
The only type of cop-lady I want to interact with is a cyberpunk cop-lady
My shock when i looked at the subscriber count :0 you deserve a lot more good sir
Fun fact: The box art of this game drawn by Larry Bundy Jr.

i dislike so much the music theme he uses
That cover is literally the coolest thing about that game. Well it's a pretty awesome one though
This Channel is underated fr. I hope you get picked up on the feed🙂

We, Latinos, understand your bootleg childhood brother... Buying games with terrible cover art and in plastic bags was my childhood.
exacto
The animations in this game? Really smooth. Body movements are very well done and flow well.
It's the first game to boast that tween smooth transitions that not even Devil May Cry 1 had

"same quality as datesims of that time"
*looks through some of those posters*
so no downsides?
Wdym? Art on the cover book is greatly drawn.
game was sick growing up, I appreciate the cover now more than I did then.
Played this on a pc back in the day, had a blast.
(Lazy comment, to help with bringing this video on the top, and being recommend for more people to watch)
Thanks a bunch!

Having played Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - I can say it's pretty kickass.

Amazing channel
I’d constantly come across this game back in 2001 at my local EB Games. It’s the shiny, foil cover that always catches my attention.
I'll always cherish the time I spent at net caffes ❤ sry about your country bro
Great video! I remeber playing the pc version of this game cause I find this cyberpunk style very cool. But the game failed to hook the 12 years old me. I played again older throught nostalgia glasses, but yeah, the game is not very good.
the Anniversary edition mod makes the game more enjoyable nowadays and plays better
Looks like a game that could benefit from a proper remaster by Nightdive Studios. Maybe even a full remake too.
This game is really great on PC. It's a shame that you've tried it on PS2. Thank you for your video.

I had to crack my original PC Version, i have no Idea why, it just didn't worked without Crack.
Have to test it out on my actual PC
I remember this on ps2 was a fun game playing it as a kid. You should do winback on n64
the Anniversary Edition for Windows is great
What music starts playing in the beginning, on the "20 games list"? Please advice.
Oni Soundtrack #08: Fight

Like everyone else at that time. i was baited by the amazing cover art. and disappointment at the gameplay
The gameplay is amazing.
i absolutely loved it despite the flaws but i'll say you should give the PC version a go instead nowadays and download the Anniversary Edition mod
About the covers, yeah it was so true in Ukraine. Cool as always brah
I think this was a launch PS2 game, if not it was very early. I know I rented it from Blockbuster at some point but the only thing I remember is the controls were weird and terrible
I'm surprised this game ran on my old stock eMachine PC.

I highly recommend checking out the Anniversary Edition mod if you wanna give a try for your first time
I believe you means the developer named: Bungie-west!
8:37 that Leon S Kennedy reference lol
he's twin lol our brother

Yeah, the PC version is the superior version of this game. I bought it and played on release and thought it was pretty fun.
There was another game like this and it amazing i forgot the name
You played the wrong version. I played the PC and finished it. It was ok for its time.
