  • In this video I explain the clear difference in results with highlights, balayage, and the highlighting cap. We often thick of these things as colors but the reality is that these are application methods. Knowing the difference and what they can do for your hair is helpful in determining what you might want at your next salon appointment or when choosing your next hair color. I have also been getting so much questions on the highlighting cap so I though it was time to include it in a video. Hope this video was helpful. Thank you for watching.

Okay but can we talk about how perfect the color theme of this video is?
The background color, the color of your clothing, your hair color, your makeup-everything is just well coordinated and complimenting and it’s so exciting yet calming to watch. Love it!

I am a former hair stylist & I learned to ‘highlight’ in the early 80’s before foil was even an idea.
I only do my own hair now but I prefer the cap all day long.
Probably because it’s how I learned…foils get on my nerves.
Because I’m good at using the cap I can pull thick or thin pieces & can tell where I’m pulling from.
I also use the cap to add lowlights at times as well.
I also know which pieces not to overlap of the pulled out pieces…
I think it’s all in technique originally learned.
But I will say that the popularity of the grown out root is a game changer! I don’t have to do any of it as often with root smudges & taps.

Hi Silvia, I miss getting my hair done by you SO much. I didn't do anything to it during the pandemic and tried a few new places since then. Nothing compares to the beautiful, natural, buttery blonde you gave me. Wishing you all the best with the new chapter of your life!

Hi Silvia, by chance I stumbled upon your tutorials about 1-2.5 years ago and started educating myself on all the various techniques and coloring products you have been doing tutorials on. Especially as the pandemic started, I started watching through your old and weekly tutorials on color techniques. Redken shades EQ products are not easy to find here in Switzerland for personal use, but through your tutorials, I managed to find myself fantastic colors, learning how to do low lights and highlights via free hand techniques on my dark hair based on your information, I managed to find the right method and hair glosses without damaging my hair too much. It is the way, you describe and explain things step by step that I appreciate and find really interesting and I still love going to my hair colorist and we are always on the same page. Only looking at your videos made me appreciate the services your colleagues do even more as I now know myself how much effort and creativity lays behind all that work that is done within hours to make a client happy and sometimes it isn’t being appreciated enough, when coloring does not turn exactly as a client would wish for. Now I have a real understanding on why the same color turns out differently on each hair…So thank you for sharing your expertise and inspiring amateurs like myself out there to dare to try things in without that experiment turning into a catastrophe 🌹!

I love these teaching video's, they're so informative! I do want to add that the cap can be painful! I used to get this done (or do it myself) years ago and started just foiling because my hair is super thick and long-pulling that through hurts. Also, as you said, it ended up being a strange, too thin, and sparse lift.

Your hair is so gorgeous! I have had all methods of highlighting to my hair. I have had it pulled thru the cap, I had foiling done for many years. I tried the beautiful balayage once. For me, since I am not a hairdresser but have been around and worked in a salon for years. I have been doing my own for years now. It is mainly due to a lack of funds. I am afraid to try to foil or balayage. I pull my long hair through a cap. I would definitely like to get the courage and learn other methods.

This video was super helpful! I kept asking for a balayage when I really wanted highlights that start further from the root. My stylist always uses foils anyway when I ask for balayage because it gives that lift I'm looking for and looks like the picture of what I want. She calls it foilyage.

I remember when my mom used a highlighting cap when I was little. She swore it looked like spaghetti had been dumped on her head and quickly went to the grocery store to get box color. If there was only TH-cam back then, she needed these videos. She goes to the salon now, but always went cheap on herself for us kids back then. Any tips on how women in their 60s with shoulder and shorter length hair can improve their color?

Great video! So I went in for the first time in ten years going brunette to golden blonde! I came in wanting to highlight my hair to golden blonde. She did not recommend this. She recommended balayage. I love it bc I love the dark left and I don’t look washed out! However I wanted originally to do highlights bc I was worried about how they retouch and overlap. I’m so scared now as I want to keep my hair long and healthy! I hope bayalage is the healthiest route, and she can just retouch roots!!! 😳

I have been having my hair highlighted for years with a cap. The biggest benefit for my hair is that it's short and my hairdresser always cut my hair before highlighting, thus preventing those uneven streaks with longer hair. He also used Wella Blondor Multi color powder. It's easy on the hair and doesn't just give one single color of highlights.
Being as short as mine is, it also gets the cap very close to my head preventing those "leopard spots" and not pulling hair from somewhere else. I always have people ask me who did my hair and how they did it. They are surprised that it was done using a cap and pic because most didn't know that method was still being used.
For me it's a perfect fit, probably not as successful with longer hair I don't think.
Sadly my hairdresser and very good friend passed away suddenly in Nov. 2023 so I've not found anyone new one to do my hair. The few I've talked to won't use the cap nor the Blondor, because they haven't done the method or use that product, nor will they either. Sure hoping I find another good hairdresser soon!

Virgin hair has zero existing bleach or colour on it. So if your hair is shoulder length and you coloured it, depending how fast your hair grows, it would probably take about 2 years to grow out that colour!

They can give nice results depending on the direction the person brushed their hair underneath and if a root tap is done. They're pretty popular with Brazilian stylists on Instagram as a way to isolate the hair that isn't going to be bleached.
