I think you may well be right, a bit like using five tucks when splicing synthetic rope. I must say though that when I have use the single method in synthetic twine, even after some time my net seems fine. But there again, my net is more ornamental than a tool.
I use both knots making cast nets. The first one works on bonded nylon when hand knitting them They are dipped when finished the which sets the knots. If you pull both sides of the bottom of the mesh you tied to before dipping it can flip the knot under the mesh just like letting it slip under while tying. The second knot is what I use when making monofiliment panel nets. Mono is slippery and I double knot each tie using the second knot first and then another sheet bend on the same mesh. There are far fewer knots in a panel net so it is much faster to make one.

Well said on the locking knots. We want to know how to join two knitting knots for the fishing net. My knots just do not stay, comes out of place. I just started net knitting, want to get the knots right.
For me it really depends on what line I am using. Some will take a simple knot like the Sheet Bend, where as others need something more substantial like a Fisherman's Bend: th-cam.com/video/tBwhgDPKxh0/w-d-xo.html

Not sure if it's something original, or if it's been done before. (I don't recall seeing a name for it.) But instead of a bend make a loop on one side, and the other line that's passing through you tie what amounts to a clove hitch over where part of the loop doubles up. If you cinch that up, it's unlikely to go anywhere at all. Not the smallest knot, but seems like one that will not shift or slip in position down either line. Another one that will hold place is more difficult, since it requires overhand loops put into and properly spaced along the first line that you're tying to. (A bit of crazy planning ahead on this.) Those overhands aren't cinched or tightened starting out, but it is important that you work them into position to have the spacing right. With the second line you go through and follow the first line's overhand loop back through itself. If you do it right, you get a form of water knot. Cinch that, and it also doesn't go anywhere. And this is a neat and small knot. And if there's tension on either half it's not going to lose its place or come apart. (The water-knot type thing can also be used to put a nice round loop into a rope that doesn't collapse, but I'm not sure if there's a particular name for that. Seems the water knot tie is more common to join two lines together instead.)

This is from another commenter, regarding monofiliment: "I tried for hours to get monofilament nets fixed and it is really difficult. I have resorted to hitches. A hitch allows me to get the net exactly the right length as well much easier. The gillnets require double sheet bends and they do not flow well enough for me and tend to close improperly. Now, this is no help for pickups. The original net appears made of overhands; so easy. There must be an alternative for monofilament pickups."
Thanks for the video which has got me going at last. Is there anyway to rescue a slipped knot if it happens? I’m actually getting more done now but they still occasionally creep in....
I find if you use the double knot method, it seem to prevent this. You may also be interested in these other Net Making Videos, there are a few different types of nets and also knots: th-cam.com/play/PL7nysDkNnZHelZpSk9Xi0YyztSUKgC4GA.html I do hope that you find some of these of interest.
You can sometimes rescue it by pulling on the two sides of the "yellow" cord like you're trying to pull them taut. This should cause the rest of the knot to try to slip upward over the "red" cord. If you've already pulled the original knot too tight, don't expect it to work very often though.
two questions........do you use anything to help protect your hands from the twine, such as powder and tape.... or..... just a good callous formed from years of netting??? .... the second question.....have you ever heard of or used a technique called the flying dutchman.....
Hello Billy, thanks for taking the time to leave a comment. When it comes to net making, I do not use any form of hand protection. Mind you having said that, none of my nets that I make are large enough to cause me a problem. I think when it comes to the Dutchman variant, the knot is tied underneath rather than over the top, as I show in my videos. I am sure there might be a good reason for tying one way or another. Mind you some knots vary from county to county or even country.

Mmm, I only know this as the double knot method. Looking at it closer it looks a little like the Simple Simon Bend, but is not. I will see if I can get a name for it......................
Johnny Debt I struggled when first started making nets because other people did not repeat the knot like you do. They just make one and go on never really explaining the knot. I like the way you use larger cordage to explain the knots. Would you use the first knot or second knot when it comes to making a casting net?
Many thanks for taking the time to view and comment. Having made a few nets now, I tend to alternate between the two knots. In my mind I feel that the double method is more secure, I would also recommend this one for a beginner. The main reason being is that the sheet bend method is too easy to get wrong when you first start out. However, when I mess with my nets, after they are made, I do not really see one as being better than the other.
@@KnottingKnots sheet bend method is mainly for hammocks, For casting net better use double knot very secured as the monofilamen line is very thin and slippery.
@@abdazizmohamad2511 I find the sheet bend is fine in natural or non slippery line. If it is slippery, I then revert to the double knot method. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
In Boy Scouts we were taught that sheet bends were for joining two lines of different sizes. The simple bight being in the larger line, the knotted line being the smaller. There isn't the problem with slipping down that this video describes.
Is the spacer half the distance between two knots? If I want one inch squares how do I find witdh of spacer.Greats videos.Thanks.I know that nets are measured with the knots pulled parallel.
I suspect that there could be quite a bit of variation on how sacks of rice are closed, dependent upon the manufacturer and the country in question. Around here, in the large bags (25-50 lbs), they are sewn and if you pull the right end, they easily come loose -- basically unzip... Some bags are sealed (via heat or ultrasonic welding of the plastic) and the only way to open them is to cut them open...
Good evening, I would like to know how I make this kind of nylon thread knot because when I make this nylon thread knot it runs. I've watched several videos and when I make his knot in nylon sometimes he runs and sometimes he firms. I am from Brazil and I make handmade nets, I would love your help! thank you.

I find myself watching your videos over and over again. I think with enough pressure on the net this version could also collapse and then slide as before. What if you put the second go around through the bight of the yellow rope? Then the red rope could not pull through the bight. Maybe Ferrule Bezel has the answer with using the Carrick bend. Great video and great explanation, thanks. Keep them coming!
The only time I have had a problem is when I tie the single knot version wrong at the very begining. However, just use the double lock version if you really want security.
Yes, but is it a double sheet bend? The only reason I say this is that a double sheet bend usually goes around the whole thing twice. Where as this variant comes up between the V and then goes round. It may well still be classed as a sheet bend??

I see, you call it a sheet bend. Makes sense. A Japanese sheet bent simply has a twist in the red chord, otherwise it is the same. The Japanese one also hold better.
Call me OCD if you want, but the asymmetry bugs me. If I ever make nets I'll use carrick bends. Hmm, no red squiggly, I gesss knot names don't need to be capitalized.
I saw this post yesterday and thought about it overnight. Yes, the Carrick bend is used and I know how to tie one. But I was not sure how to tie one as a net knot, must educate myself!!!

Did you have a certain issue Ian?
Thank you for the instructions on net making. I am trying to make two little soccer goals and their nets. For now it keeps slipping. I'm afraid it's the line I'm using (100% polipropileno).
Yes, sometimes the line can be your biggest enemy. When I use a slippery line, I go for the double knot method. Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
Could not figure out how the knot was created until viewing the above fisher men work so fast when mending.

10:52 what is the name of this knot ?? its not the regular sheet band
I also would like the name of this particular knot!
What I was taught was the single turn was ok for natural line like hemp, but the double turn was more secure on synthetics.
Hi John. Great vedio.
I go sailing and every time i do a bowline i put in a hitch knott to stop the bowline from untying itself from rubbing on the safety lines. Make sence to lock the knott if it is permit. Oh yes, do not get too knotted up.😄😄😄

Thanks for your very clear explanation!

Strangely enough I made my first net yesterday, had this exact problem, and this shows up in my feed this morning.
The other issue I have is pulling my knots tight enough. That will come with practice I suppose.
After a while, you can feel if it is going to work or not. I started using the double method, till I got used to it. Do you enjoy it though?
Hello is there a video on youtube that shows how to attach the thread on the chest on the fish nett?
Not sure what you mean?
Hi, when I have finished making fishing nets, then I will mount ropes around fishing nets, is there any video that shows this
@@arnegaratun8337 I see what you mean.............. I do not have a video this, but I am guessing that you are looking for a good knot to use to tie the line to the rope. I personally find the Surgeon's Knot to be a good general purpose binding knot: th-cam.com/video/zMaBlFdlSjQ/w-d-xo.html Let me have a search and see if Ashley's Book of Knots has anything, or one of my netting books........................
I enjoyed the video. Could you show how it looks like after the net starts to form showing how the successive rows are added?

Great knot for making monofilament nets.
I have never worked with that, must give it a go.
Thank you!
03:25
But what I don't unterstand, why you go with the needle , when you have passed under the red line to the right, you go first to the left over your hand, then again to the right. And then erst start to go under the red bight?
Why don't you go when the needle is on the right side at once under the red bight? Like you see it at 04:00
Im using your techníque using monofilament but it slips and deforms. Shame, maybe that only works with bígger strands or with braided line.
I take it that it is also not working with the double knot method?
Sorry, but i am commenting on the wrong video. I was refering to thís one th-cam.com/video/gfTWgMTqGqY/w-d-xo.html well i havent tried multiple knots to it yet though. Ill try to make another one with multiple knóts and see to it if it works. Anyway thanks for the tutorial, at least it gives the idea. Sorry for my english.
Always glad to help out, let me know how you get on?
There's no way somebody don't understand that explanation. Thank you!

Whats the second knot called.... I have been using that knot just don't know the name.. I just thought I made it up as a spin off of hitch knot
Mmm, I only know this as the double knot method. Looking at it closer it looks a little like the Simple Simon Bend, but is not. I will see if I can get a name for it......................
👍thanks

Hey, any chance you have a video on a makers knot? I've been told that's the knot to use when joining to bottom points in repairing a net.
Not heard of that one, off to do some research...................
for the bottom meshes it is the same knot but upside down
well done
Where can you buy this special "needle"?
eBay or Amazon are your friend, but you can easily make your own with a sharp knife.
Is the spacer half the distance between two knots? If I want one inch squares how do I find witdh of spacer.Greats videos.Thanks.I know that nets are measured with the knots pulled parallel.
Nice video, can you please make a video like this on how to untie the knot of a sack of rice from the grocery. Thanks
10:52 what is the name of this knot ??
very vid god and god explained. bat no traducing in spanish lenguage .
I think I know what you are saying, do you know what I can do to help you?
Good evening, I would like to know how I make this kind of nylon thread knot because when I make this nylon thread knot it runs. I've watched several videos and when I make his knot in nylon sometimes he runs and sometimes he firms. I am from Brazil and I make handmade nets, I would love your help! thank you.
use double knots method, it wont slips/runs anywhere.its firmed/fixed at one place or break off

:-) Guess I should've watched this one first before asking what I was doing wrong in the other video! :-)
When you say double lock are you referring to a double sheet bend?
Yes, but is it a double sheet bend? The only reason I say this is that a double sheet bend usually goes around the whole thing twice. Where as this variant comes up between the V and then goes round. It may well still be classed as a sheet bend??
I don’t want to hunt, i want to make a net to throw pillows and blankets and other bulky shit somewhere under the ceiling, or even clothing when i'm too lazy.
I have a small apartment and that would be cool
Yeah, I do not hunt either, but I do love net making! You might find the purse net the right solution, as it is shaped like a small hammock: th-cam.com/video/TcsYhpMNKvQ/w-d-xo.html
How if you try a Square knot.
I personally do not use the square knot................ Thanks for taking the time to view and also make a comment, very much appreciated.
HOW DO YOU TIE A KNOT TO CONNECT TO DAMN LINES>
Just use your favourite knot for joining two lines together. Personally, I use the Surgeon's Knot, easy to tie and locks fast: th-cam.com/video/zMaBlFdlSjQ/w-d-xo.html
It just boggles my mind that fishing nets were tied by hand.
Give it a go, the materials and tools are cheap and you end up with something useful!

England must be the only place on earth where, even a fisherman's skin can be as white as a puppy's teeth!
