- In this video I fix a Seiko Kinetic watch by replacing the capacitor battery, an easy fix.
The exact model is Seiko Kinetic 5M62-0CW9. The matching part is 30235MY. The watch is 9 years old, not 15 that I wrote inside, and usually the capacitor battery doesn't last that long.
I cleaned the watch head with alcohol, and the bracelet with boiling water and alcohol.

Thanks for this video. It took me considerably longer to accomplish it, but the watch is working. I have had this same exact model sitting in a drawer in the original box for ten years. It was presented to me for 25 years at my job. I retired a couple of months ago after 35 years, and decided to wear the watch. It wouldn't hold a charge, but it works great now. Thanks.
I just thought that I would share with you that I found the chunky all-black diver's version of this watch in my local flea market, for 10GBP. A replacement capacitor battery cost me a little bit more than that, but your instructional video saved me a fortune - Thank you.
Thank you. My Dad has a 15 -20 year old one that stopped within a year or maybe 2 of getting it. I'm going to try and fix it for him. It's been in a drawer for years. This looks straight forward.

Thank you gor this informative video. I just finished mine and although it took a few tries , all the pieces went back together. I used a 10x jewelers loupe and a bright light source. I had to file down a tiny screwdriver but it was a success. Not only saved money but got that feeling of satisfaction!

I also had to file down a screwdriver and use a complicated array of ad hoc magnifying glasses but hooray! My Seiko Titanium Kinetic is back working! Thanks Alon. it was also a great idea to put the bracelet in hot water and let it clean while I struggled with the tiny screws.
Very helpfull video, just removed the capacitor/battery from my Seiko that stopped working a couple of days ago, replacements arriving in the next couple of days and this video makes me reasonably confident that I will fix it OK.

Единственно пришлось приобрести инструмент для снятия задней крышки и придумать как зафиксировать корпус часов, чтобы снять эту самую крышку, так как было необходимо приложить значительные усилия при откручивании. Thanks! The sandpaper is very mild cushion based, you will find that in the supermarket for cleaning dishes.
Now you can have a go at changing the crystal.

Hi Alon, This is very helpful but am having problems locating parts (UK)/ and or a part number for the battery capacitor for a Seiko Kinetic 5M42-0H30. Any thoughts would be much appreciated. Ian
After a quick search it looks like you need the same capacitor model: 30235MY in the video. Don't order it yet, open the watch back and copy the movement model. Search again "capacitor for kinetic movement xxxxxx", only after this search you can be sure what is the right capacitor model.

I see you omitted showing the other side refitting of the watch band and the retightening of the watch back. Perhaps adding a text line to that effect on your video would have resulted in a 10/10 score from me. Anyhow 9.5 outa 10 aint a bad mark.
The third hole at the bottom the small metal bracket. I could not tell how that was released. Does it sit on a post or something?
Yes, it has a post to sit on. It is easier to get it in and out if you remove the rotor. I did that on another watch.

I'm struggling to unscrew the back casing - I'm guessing that it has never been unscrewed since we bought the watch 30 years ago. Have you got any suggestions for how to loosen it? Many thanks.
If you have a dedicated tool, just be persistent. It was tight. I did the struggle off camera. Use protective layer so you will not scratch the back. If you don't have a dedicated tool, get a 2 dollars one from AliExpress, this is what I use.
I have a 7D48-0AB0. Is the capacitor battery similar to this one in video. I sent mine to BestFix in Denton TX for replacement about 2 years ago. Now the second hand is advancing 2 seconds at a time like in beginning of your video. Is the capacitor the same as battery as I see they have one on Ebay for about $20.00? Looks easy to replace from your video. Thanks
The capacitor battery should last way more than two years. The part you're looking for is 3023 24X. Search in TH-cam a clip with the title: "Seiko kinetic 7D48 battery replacement tutorial".

Funny how that thin red plastic separator always seems to end up on the wrong side of the battery on used, dead watches I buy.

Thank you. You need to find the exact capacitor battery. Open the back case of the watch and take a good picture with the movement number. Search google the movement number with battery and you'll have the model of the battery. Search the battery model in eBay.

No it is not the same battery. I can't find the correct battery type online.

I searched the part by the watch model, apparently the original part 3023-5MZ was discontinued. The part 3023-5MY replaces the discontinued part. Works great.
You say after 15 years change the capacitor. Is this only after the capacitor is charged up? Or does the time count while the watch is new and uncharged yet?
I later found out that my friend's watch was 9 years old, not 15. In these 9 years, the capacitor goes many cycles of charging, and gradually deteriorate. At the end of life, the capacitor cannot hold enough energy to run the watch through the night. Then it is time to replace it, like replacing the rechargeable 12V car battery.
What size is the screwdriver please? I have 1.4mm but assume this might be too big. Great video

Add alcohol in boiling water. What type of alcohol.
Like brandy alcohol. Can we use vinegar n boiling water?
I used 70% alcohol found in farma store. Vinegar is also a good idea.

No. I already fixed two, and these had slightly different movements and different capacitor models.

I don't know where to get the full circuit, only where to get the capacitor battery. You may need a watchmaker for full circuit replacement.
can i do the hot water dip cleaning without removing the main watch itself?
I'm sure the hot water will hurt the gaskets and penetrate the watch head. Don't do that.
It would be nice if the scratched crystal be replaced as the icing on the cake, nevertheless it is a very good video

I insert the new capacitor when it is new, so it had no charge, but this is a good point, it could be a short circuit if it charged.

@@TegraPlays After fixing another Seiko Kinetic, I can say that it is recommended to remove the rotor, it is safer.
what did you use to polish the bracelet?
The sandpaper is very mild cushion based, you will find that in the supermarket for cleaning dishes.

I find the green scotch brite scrub pads to be too coarse. Try find something mild. If you cant find, make sure you polish in straight lines, in order to avoid cross scratching.

Ive got 2 broken seiko kenetics there hopeless I only have 1 working watch my Rolex Deepsea but it's 2 bulky to wear all the time I might sell it and get a sub mariner I don't know yet il see in the future

Something is not right. I tried to do exactly what the video showed WITHOUT removing the rotor and the metal plate would not come out.
I did the job on another watch with a different model, and there I had to remove the rotor. So in your case I recommend that you remove the rotor.

Mine died about 6 years after I bought it! I still have it somewhere at home since it died in 2012, but I didn't have it repaired--as I wouldn't dare to do myself--'cause it would have been too expensive as I paid $600 USD when I first bought it and didn't know how bad these kinetic watches were!!! 🤔
Give it a try. You can easily find the part for a 2006 watch. Good luck!
That's strange. Other similar videos show removal of the rotary and cogged wheel.

No need in this specific movement, the metal part gets underneath. Maybe there are other movements with minor variations that requires removal.
Nick is correct, the gasket cane be put in place MUCH easier the gasket has to go over a pin.
For the convenience of replacing the battery, remove the rotor.
I've a seiko 5M63 that's been going nonstop since December 2003 without any trouble.

Absolutely the worst least collectible line of watches (Kinetic) - this is an abomination for any collector unless you wear them daily. Once the battery(capacitor) is exhausted there is virtually no way to revive it outside of hacks that work some of the time. Seiko actually had a charger they sold primarily in Japan and then discontinued because of price point and lack of interest - sell them or store them and forget them as quickly as reasonably possible. They are not collectible and no sane watch collector would pay $1 USD for any.
You can see that this is easy to fix, with 13$ part that is still manufactured, and 10 minutes of work.
@@AlonNahary yes I upgraded two of them to lithium capacitors - I have 15 in my collection and they are impossible to manage and keep running - easier to put on my 1940's Hamiltons and manual wind

remove the rotor and the gear underneath, the gasket you had trouble with has a hole that sets over a plastic stud in the movement! MUCH EASIER, AND CORRECT
