  • We are in Ponta Barra for a Business trip and instead of heading back straight to South Africa we decide to take a road most only talk about. We have only heard stories of the road between Pafuri, where you cross the Limpopo at Mapai, all the way to Mabote. There is little information on it and we just had to find out for ourselves.
While we are there, we decide to visit the Zinave National park and instead of driving to Mabote from Vilankolos, we take the road in from Pande next to the Save river.
The Zinave national Park signed a management agreement with Peace Parks in 2015, and the work that has been done there is clearly visible. It is a gem of the place. In no other park have I seen such beauty and concentration of plains game.
We wild camp a night in Zinave before heading down to Mapai, which can only be described as a gruelling day of driving. Watch VIDEO to find out.

@ianmansfield9654 I sent you the number of the fairy operator at Mapai if you want to cross there. 👍🏻

Fantastic video and really helpful information about N222. I Just wanted to know that fallen bridge at 14:34 is located North or South Banamana Lake? I am planning to do this route from Sango Border to Vilankulo in May and I am trying to get as much information as possible to get around the Lake (also hoping the water levels will drop)

Hi there. The fallen bridge is west of Banamana. You want to stick as far south around the lake. Ask locals where the best route is. From the southern point of the lake to the next town is the worst bit. From there to Mabote and Vilankulo is fine again.
