There should be no ‘we don’t have the money’ excuse considering how much they charge for the games and packs and how many people still actually buy these packs
How do they not have the money when they keep making all of these packs and kits? Either way, I would rather get a pack that's fleshed out about something I don't really care about instead of having bullshit of a pack for something I do care about like horses. Why aren't they using their money wisely then? :(
Tbf, the company has money, but I don't know how much money is actually given to the team to work on the game. Idk if they've ever stated how much they're given or how much time, but I feel like that would make a significant difference.
Theres a possibility they have a budget given by EA that Maxis get given every year, same with all the devs that are owned within the publisher company. I wouldn’t be surprised if their budget is significantly less than devs such as DICE or EA sports, since the games those devs make have a much larger audience than The Sims. But you’re 100% right, the amount EA expects people to invest to play The Sims to its fullest yet would rather give us quantity priced up to $40 with no quality is frankly insulting. This is why I pirate all the packs and rightfully so, else i’d be a consumer not getting their moneys worth.

I think you have a point but i also agree with those who say if you don't like it stop playing. Let's take Satch for example, if he wasn't a youtuber my advice to him would be to stop playing the sims 4. You can see he's trying to enjoy it but he clearly isn't in my opinion. I just don't get the point in playing a game you aren't getting that much enjoyment out of, regardless of how much you want to like it. Especially given the price. As it is, i think Satch's voice is very much needed in the community and it's good we have him. Criticism is good and needed. But at the same time, there are people who literally hate watch sims 4 videos and criticize others for liking it and that's not okay.

There's Certain, Probably, Maybe, Unlikely, and impossible. It's certain that Shanice and her attempted aborted sister will somehow die. They will probably set their house on fire. Maybe they'll send another tax credit to another family. It's unlikely that they won't glitch. It's impossible for them to not be in the next pack.
University is a lot of work but I find it's actually a great pack just for the career benefit. If you do a distinguished and do really well you started level 8. It's up to the player to make sure their Sim has the skills to enter that level. It's a little op but kinda realistic.
They could've had a horse camp where you could send your kids to. Even better yet, give you the option to run one. Maybe give you the option to build little cabins on your ranch that you could rent out, or a campsite. I still remember my weekend at a ranch in Arizona, there was so much to do. A nightly campfire with a singing cowboy, helicopter rides, horserides in groups, etc. Why can't you go on a group ride in the Sims 4? Why can't we chop wood for the fire? Why can't we join a country band and play the fiddle together? There are so many missed options.
As an elder millennial lol who has played sims from sims 1 to sims 4, the last generation of sims that was amazing was sims 3. I know it was buggy at the time, but playing it again on todays computers makes the bugs a million times better. The open world was so ambitious and I loved it and still love it. I played sims 4 for literally an hour and went back to the sims 3 bc it’s sooooo boring! I can’t imagine buying packs for sims 4 when sims 3 packs have so much stuff it’s amazing! EA has definitely gotten greedy and lazy with the sims 4 and I think the final nail in the coffin will be the sims 5. Unfortunately
EA hasn't "gotten" greedy, they've always been greedy. That's how business works. Capitalism is broken. I hated sims3 on a personal level. I'm a sims2 aficionado (tho I started with sims1 as well) and I played that until toddlers came out for sims4. I play 4 now and have found that the game improved tons with growing together EP - yeah I know there are lots of people that don't like it or family play, but just in a general way, I can play and not get bored now. It's fun so I'm getting my money's worth of entertainment out of it. Satch is enjoying it but still hates it which makes me laugh - especially as his audience is the (estranged) sims4 audience :)
@@saganathasme For me, Sims 4 was my first Sims game. I have easily 700+ hours on it (not including it sitting idly when I took a break or something). And I got it last year when it went free-to-play. So even with the money I spent on it (almost $300 for the packs I snatched on sale), I do feel like I am getting my money worth. However, I have to agree with the criticisms this game has received. Thanks the gods I didn't have a way to play this game when it first released. Because without these packs and the base game improvements, Sims 4 would have soured my Sims experience entirely.

EA is just not early Maxis before EA when Sims was developed. Will Wright and his early team of Sims/Sim City creators are pretty much gone. Sims 1-3 felt like relatives, true sequels to the previous versions offering something that enhanced the previous experience in core gameplay. Sims 4 does not. It’s basically upgraded Sims aesthetics. Honestly, Sims 4 2023 is growing on me but that’s cause I DID NOT buy every product at launch nor do I own every pack. And with my limited time on the weekend to play for hours, there’s packs I still want that I haven’t purchased yet. They can keep horse ranch, way too expensive for not enough features and sim 2 is STILL my main gameplay tbh. Such an incredible game after what, two decades? But Maxis (before becoming a division of EA) was a different beast then, under EA they are just different even if the name ‘Maxis’ still exist. EA is doing, actually, just what I expect of EA.
@@saganathasmeAs a Sims 2 loyalist I so agree, toddlers got me interested in Sims 4 and by actually waiting not only did I get Sims 4 free and get to play an evaluate it for a bit, some of the bundles make getting a few packs easier now. Sims 4 is not close to as terrible as it was at launch and I just now accept it as a completely separate game I play alongside my ongoing Sims 2 legacy neighborhoods.

Plenty of reasons to be frustrasted with EA/Maxis, but they said that about project rene and specifically about the UI, meaning how little information they can have on screen with the players still understanding what the sims are doing and why they're doing it.
Sims 3 Pets came with: 1. Horses 2. Cats 3. Dogs 4. Minor pets (like 100 variants of hamsters, birds, snakes, turtles, squirrels etc). 5. Stray animals (cats dogs and horses). 6. Unicorn 7. Horse racing competition 8. Customizable horse obstacles courses AND customizable horse RACING courses. 9. World, CAS n BB items 10. New community lot types (4-5 new ones…) 11. Neighborhood pet adoption 12. Hunting with pets 13. Ambient stray animals like deer and raccoon. .. I’ve missed a ton but the best part was the challenge. Oh I want my sim to have something else other than a hamster well then you gotta go find a rare on in the wild yourself etc. I want to adopt a unicorn, well you gotta befriend the unicorn and also have befriended an X amount of animals first.
and the sims4 came with cats and dogs as a separate pack, WITH another pack which requires u to buy cats and dogs pack for full access to everything, and then a severely rushed horse pack which is separate to the cottage living pack which comes WITH MORE ANIMALS 😭 and My first pet stuff comes with hamsters, gerbils ect which are also common household pets just like cats and dogs are. HOW DID THE SIMS 3 HAVE 1 PACK FOR EVERYTHING AND THEN THE SIMS 4 HAS LIKE 4 SEPERATE PACKS

I agree, even if it worked they were literally selling us an event we already had (just significantly more complicated) and a kits worth of stuff, and then *on top of that* they couldn’t even make it remotely functional. The biggest mistake of horse ranch is that you have to own a horse to ride one. Expansive and cross-pack content off the top of my head: proper horse stables lot type with the ability to just ride a horse (competitions can be rabbitholes), learn to ride, take kids to horse riding practise, horseback rides in different events, horse riding clubs, wild horses in the new world, actually seeing your horses needs, active career taking care of horses and training them, horse wagons, hay fields, ponies, horses getting sick, horseback camping, etc... oh well, at least they did nectar to let us wash it all down somehow.
The completionist syndrome you keep mentioning sounds a lot like the sunken cost fallacy, which is a very real thing that game companies explicitly use to keep players around! Basically, once you've spent enough of your time and money on something, you're less likely to abandon it even if it's begun to have a negative impact on your health, relationships, personal economy, etc. Because you don't want to have wasted everything that you've already given up until that point. It's easy to create an addiction that way.
2 things that boil my p!ss about the horse pack is the not being able to set a course with the jumps and barrels. And the mounting glitch where your sim just gets off the horse the second they get on. I had to mount my horse 10 times the other day because the sim just kept getting off!

Considering that EA and Maxis are headquartered in the Bay Area, which is having a housing problem due to high housing prices, I’m betting that the issue is that most of the developers are working from home and barely talking to one another, resulting in them all falling behind on implementing gameplay that inevitably gets dropped from the final product

I'm not buying it until its on a steep discount. I completely agree too! There just isn't enough to justify it as an expansion pack. I actually quit the sims 4 before cottage living, probably the pack I'd love the most, but I was just sick of having to use mods to fix my game and having to test them every time we had an update. Some modders have completely left and I LIKE those mods but they are now completely broken. Its just not worth it anymore for me. When I realized how heavily I was relying on mods to keep my game going... I quit. I still play the sims 3, though I REALLY wish they would give us an update like the Mac one so that it would play better on new PCs!

I used to barrel race growing up, and they could have AT THE VERY LEAST, added a third barrel in the barrel training item. In barrel racing, you race around three barrels… not in a circle with two barrels. Edit to add: ALSO, it’s ridiculous that the “intensely train” option for the barrels is literally just trotting or cantering gently around in an oval around the barrels. No amount of intense training was had 🙄
It's the same with jumping. We don't jump and then turn round and jump back over the same one. Why can't we make courses or at least have one in each neighborhood that we could use. The stirrups not being attached to the leather and somehow stay on the feet really annoys me and then I noticed western stirrups on an English saddle so I went back to sims 3 horses 🤣

I have notice something watching your videos. The place where you go with the horse for the competition, that shell isn't new. It's a bigger skin from the "station" that comes in Snowy Scape. It's on the neighborhood that has the Kabuto festive for childrens. They didn't even bother to create something new for a rabbit hole
Yes please more let's plays you're so entertaining!! I really wish EA would stop pushing out these packs and just go back to refreshing the packs. The Spa Day refresh added a good amount of content that made it feel more worth the money, and refreshing their older packs would go a long way to building up confidence in the team. Especially if they want us to believe in them enough to buy the Sims 5 someday.
Satch, you’re spot on. The development team is horrible. They don’t care about their product or the community, the main focus is on the money. And you’re probably correct about the hiring process, where the priority is anything but the actual skill and passion for the project. Someone in the comment section said that EA is like McDonald’s of IT companies, and I can’t help but agree. Sims 2 is as good as it is because the development team was ambitious about it, not about the profits they can make of it, they kept that ambition for Sims 3, but then something went wrong so now we’re here and honestly, I feel like this is the end. It’s never going to get any better, so enjoy what you have while you can.

I think "diversity hiring" in EA's case means that straight white men generally have higher pay expectations and also are used to being treated with some respect, neither of which seems to be a good fit for EA's work culture.
It's outrageous that there are so many things in packages that don't work. And it also cannot be repaired afterwards. Sometimes it seems like as many packages as possible have to come out to sell. And that the quality is put on the back burner as a result. Yesterday I watched a let's play by someone and the restaurant staff (dine out) also did everything except what they were told. And OMG I can't say it often enough but your unique laugh makes me laugh too. I just love it haha.
The Sims 4 didn't just murder my love for the franchise. It played a cheery song at the funeral, took a selfie with the grave and then continued to come back every pack release to dance and spit on that grave.
As a horse girl who played Sims 3 Pets amongst other horse games, the Sims 4 horse ranch looks horrendously boring. I agree, we don’t necessarily need to see a full on horse show in the Sims 4, but not being able to build your own obstacle courses? IRL, when you’re learning to ride, you will start with only one small jump. But there’s also flat work, jumps of varying sizes, serpentines, etc. seeing the horse go in a tiny circle over the same jump over and over again just looks sad. 😂 I am so glad I got cottage living over horse ranch. Cottage living is soooo much prettier (IMO) and feels like a full expansion pack. The mini sheep and goats seems like a crappier version of the llamas and cows. They serve the exact same function. The ONLY two things from the ranch pack that I wish I had were the horses themselves and the wine making feature. 😂
Please do more let's plays! I am a newer player and I wasn't there when there were let's plays of older packs. It would be great to see the gameplay aspect of some of these! Besides your let's plays are always so much fun!!

I think the issue with EA is they are a large company with greedy shareholders and things are structured around profit more than anything else. Having a virtual Monopoly on Sims type games, they can do anything without fearing losing customers at this point. In seven months, I think, that is set to change, but clearly no one at EA has read that memo yet. [rolls eyes] Anyways, their executives probably did put limits on the developers to make the pack in this amount of time. No exceptions. And the Guru's themselves probably did the best they could in that timeframe. But I am not responsible for paying their paychecks. I do not have to buy this pack just for them.
Horse Ranch is not worse but tbh is not for everyone,many people are not interested in horses! My Wedding Stories could have been such a good pack,more usability but unfortunatelly there are many glitches...However I sometimes play with MWS and it works it fun,I prefer it over horses!
I mean, I like horses, and I would really like my sims to ride a horse. I liked horses in TS3, but I'd never buy Horse Ranch even if God asked me too. That's right, I'd rather go to hell.

Remember that meme for "Game of Thrones" - the drawing of a horse from head to tail that depicted how much worse the art and rendering became throughout? Maybe the horse pack was EA's easter egg of that. It was a bit of fun for a minute. My sim was off on another unstoppable task between every horse interaction. Way too many demanding chores for all the resets to fix glitches imho. The frustration topped the fun pretty quickly.
It's sad that the quality of the gameplay of The Sims 4 continues to decline. Build/buy and CAS assets are cute but a "cute" aesthetic isn't enough to make a life simulation game enjoyable, we need depth which Sims 4 clearly lacks. I still play Sims 4 from time to time but I tend to focus more now on TS3 and TS2 because those games are better in terms of gameplay
My game is so glitchy right now ever since I got horse ranch (not even currently playing with those features) that I stopped playing it and went to sims 3 for the first time. If you want to play the sims 3 I highly recommend it and you can make it run a lot easier and more smoothly with just a few mods! People have had like 15 years to make mods that make the game run way better lol. Look up “tips for making sims 3 run better” on TH-cam and there’s a lot of videos suggesting all the same things like the smooth patch mod! Coming from someone with a couple thousand hours in TS4 who tried out TS3 like this and hasn’t switched back since 😅

Valid rant. One thing to be mindful of though diversity hires still need to be qualified and competent employees. So any hires meant to diversify their staff are hardly the fault for these lackluster packs. In fact most times, people who are "diversity hires" tend to be overachievers in order to even compete alongside other "non-diversity" (? lol) applicants. Most issues with a company this big are almost always the fault of poor management (people and project) from mid-level to top. So, yes let's shit on EA but maybe not the employees who are probably not even paid their worth. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised at the top-level if there are folks who don't even actually care about this game or its quality or its content and they probably make really harsh deadlines, cut back on quality assurance and just probably in general are unwilling to make more realistic deadlines because of profit benchmarks etc.
i know everyone enjoys playing differently but for myself, paranormal stuff pack and nifty knitting offer more long-term playability than horse ranch. as stuff packs!! horse ranch seems soulless and lazily implemented in every way. barely a game pack even. i haven't seen glitches like this since wedding stories fr 💀
I wish insead of working on a new game they would work on the current sims game. Or if they are giving us half the quality OVER HALF the price of the packs.
I SOOOO agree that having an “Indoor Animals / Pets pack” with tanks and cages, cats and dogs etc… and having an “Outdoor Animals Pack” just would be so nice 🎉 Also I agree simmers are stuck in a toxic relationship with EA and EA just keeps taking advantage of us 😮
Thinking on the "some type of aesthetic 'living'" type of pack, I think Horse Ranch could have been improved (and possibly even made worthy of being an expansion) if it was instead a "Western Living" pack, and besides just horses, there were other playable features that went along with that "Old US West" kind of aesthetic: mechanical bulls in the bars, with weekly competitions; mining/panning for gold with a jewelry making skill; a new active career or two such as large animal vet or dude ranch owner (with the ability to rent out rooms to guest sims and teach them to ride a horse or use a lasso); maybe even some new non-active careers like rodeo clown or cowboy/cowgirl (where working hours would be a couple of days while your sim was off doing a cattle drive; and yes, rodeos or horse competitions that, while a rabbit hole experience, still involved pop-ups or something that would wake the player up so they felt involved in the outcome. I can't help but feel that with a little bit of ambition and research they could have done so much with this particular topic; and I don't think that any of these ideas are outside the realm of what could be done in a Sims 4 expansion. So just getting glitchy horses and mini-animals that die easily in a large-ish (for the Sims 4) world is an utter disappointment; 100% agree with your rant.
I have observed that EA, mainly because of the sims 4, are creating a whole generation of new pirates because it has become : kill or be killed,, screw them or get screwed by them. Peeps also tend to get all their other games for free too to gain back all the $ they have lost on low quality cash-grabby content for the sims 4.
I think either a Horse Ranch Pack refresh or a free update with Unicorns would be a good idea. Simmer Erin has posted a theory that there will be a "My first pet stuff 2.0" for Horses. It fould be fairer to add that with a free addon, because I fully agree that there is not that much in horse-ranch. I think Cottage living had more gameplay. New lot challenges, the animals, the jobs from town, big plants... Horseranch feels less. I recently bought werewolves and really liked how much gameplay it brings. (Allthough maybe having a werewolve working as a doctor in combination with get to work was not my cleverest idea...) Maybe they ran out of time finishing the game, but in that case adding things in via sims delivery express or free update would be a way to make up for that. I haven bought and thus haven'T played horse ranch, but all videos I watched had horses clipping, horses appearing anywhere, at least one weird glitch with simses body, so yeah it seems to be maybe not supper buggy but at least glitchy.
Satch, please continue with making let’s play series. Your series are so fun and entertaining, I can’t get enough. I’m so tired of watching those Legacy let’s plays where everything is cc, the sims live in their boring suburban houses, the infants have those bloody eye lashes and look like 30 year olds with a full face of makeup. I won’t be surprised if we’ll get eye lashes for the bloody horses and the mini goats later
I personally would love more Let's Plays as I mentioned in other videos comments - you can do any type of them you want. Occults, Uni, make them sugar babies, turn them into crime fighters, doctors or dream home decorators I would love to watch any of it! With you blend of humor and chaos I think any type you picked to do would be a ton of fun and while I only speak for myself, I truly believe others would feel the same and want to watch!

That’s what people don’t understand… we don’t “complain” because we don’t like the game. We “complain” ‘cause we do like the game and would like to see it be it’s best. I will be playing Palia until Life by You comes out, ‘cause the Sims 4 is not worthy and it’s not getting better.
I just finished both aspirations and am so relieved. Training the horse and nector making became so repetitive. I absolutely loved my unicorn (I have SpinningPlumbob’s unicorn mod) and was sad to see the unicorn go but I was so bored. I feel like I got everything out of the pack that I could.
The ranch hand is the worst. If they turned up they would take care of the plants, feed the chicken, repair what's broken and clean the house. I know I can tell them not to take of the plants and not to repair stuff. But you have to tell them every single day anew and then they still might ignore this. They never reset the obstacles, they never cleaned the stalls, they never refilled the hay, they never brushed the horses. If they had nothing to do they might talk to the horses but just as often would read a book or talk to plants. They constantly ran after the chickens to feed them even though they had feed laying all over the place. But they never interacted with the sheep or goats. They would slightly brush the cow, but not really either and neither clean the hut nor refill the food. Nor would they clean the chicken house. Even when I had gotten rid of all animals except horses, shut the greenhouse and house to everyone but my sim and made sure there was nothing else to do but take care if the horses would they at most talk to them. I genuinely believe it’s a matter of incompetence. If I was a skilled developer or programmer, I would most certainly not work for EA. Which leaves the runt of the litter. I mean, they were blabbering on about the difficulties in creating horses and the amount of work they put in. Yet, they simply reused all the existing animations from TS3. It’s exactly the same. The way the Sims mount the horse and are thrown of. The way the horses play with the ball, etc. The probably just copied the code (that’s why there is still traces of unicorns in the code). To be fair, even a skilled programmer would face many limitations with the game’s coding. They add new coding with every new pack. If you keep piling code over a brittle framework, you will encounter multiple bugs that cannot be fixed without breaking something else. This is where we are now. Presumably this is one of the reasons why there is so little new gameplay, apart from the fact that cas and build items are much cheaper to produce and implement. As much as I would like a great Sims game, I believe it is a lost cause. I’ll keep watching TS4’s exitus from the sidelines.

Also yeah, I don't get when people justify that Horse Ranch should be an expansion pack because it has more 15 lots and that the world looks beautiful or that the horse animations take a long time to do. lol. Season didn't come with a world, so not a single lot was added. But do I think that's an expansion pack? Yes, it is. Seasons expands how you play the game. Expansion packs should expand your gameplay, not how the world looks or how many lots you can build on. And animations should be smooth horse or not.
I always thought that extention packs were packs that play into everyday game play. Think like weather, high school, get to work, maybe even city living. Just, if it's big enough and it plays into every day then it's an extention pack. Meanwhile I thought game packs were a lil more niche, like it has alot have stuff but it lives in its own world and you can go your entire game without interacting or noticing that pack. Meanwhile I thought stuff packs or whatever is the most niche stuff and it's really in its own corner of everything. Like it focuses on one thing and it doesn't gave alot but that's why it's a stuff pack. And honestly that seems like the best way to go about it instead of whatever shit they are doing now
There are some things here I agree with and something I do not. The sims 3 had it's own set of issues that people seem to have conveniently forgotten about. The routing was awful for one. Also, I'm personally not getting half the glitches you did. Whether or not you consider it an expansion pack will depends on what you like. I love horses so I get a lot out of it and the breeding is a ton of fun for me. That said, you are absolutely right about the competitions, and i wish they were like the sims 3 ones. Personally i like the pack and don't think it's worse than My Wedding Stories but agree it could have been so much better. Yes to unicorns for free......and not in the fairy pack!!
7:43 I understand that hiring the right people could be a cause of the issues, but I was confused about your comment on “diversity hiring” instead of hiring “skilled people.” The Sims 4 has a LOT of problems. We’ve been talking about the cultural insensitivity and lack of diversity in the game forever, and I’d think having more diverse staff would have helped with that problem at least. The issues with this specific pack are a result of greed and laziness on the part of EA. They know they can get away with charging premium prices for sub-par products and so they continue to do it.
There should be no ‘we don’t have the money’ excuse considering how much they charge for the games and packs and how many people still actually buy these packs

Theres a possibility they have a budget given by EA that Maxis get given every year, same with all the devs that are owned within the publisher company. I wouldn’t be surprised if their budget is significantly less than devs such as DICE or EA sports, since the games those devs make have a much larger audience than The Sims. But you’re 100% right, the amount EA expects people to invest to play The Sims to its fullest yet would rather give us quantity priced up to $40 with no quality is frankly insulting. This is why I pirate all the packs and rightfully so, else i’d be a consumer not getting their moneys worth.

I think you have a point but i also agree with those who say if you don't like it stop playing. Let's take Satch for example, if he wasn't a youtuber my advice to him would be to stop playing the sims 4. You can see he's trying to enjoy it but he clearly isn't in my opinion. I just don't get the point in playing a game you aren't getting that much enjoyment out of, regardless of how much you want to like it. Especially given the price. As it is, i think Satch's voice is very much needed in the community and it's good we have him. Criticism is good and needed. University is a lot of work but I find it's actually a great pack just for the career benefit. If you do a distinguished and do really well you started level 8. It's up to the player to make sure their Sim has the skills to enter that level. It's a little op but kinda realistic.
Simmers are the most self-sabotaging community out there. The way we just keep coming back to this toxic relationship😂.

They could've had a horse camp where you could send your kids to. Even better yet, give you the option to run one. Maybe give you the option to build little cabins on your ranch that you could rent out, or a campsite. I still remember my weekend at a ranch in Arizona, there was so much to do. A nightly campfire with a singing cowboy, helicopter rides, horserides in groups, etc. Why can't you go on a group ride in the Sims 4? Why can't we chop wood for the fire? Why can't we join a country band and play the fiddle together? There are so many missed options.

As an elder millennial lol who has played sims from sims 1 to sims 4, the last generation of sims that was amazing was sims 3. I know it was buggy at the time, but playing it again on todays computers makes the bugs a million times better. The open world was so ambitious and I loved it and still love it. I played sims 4 for literally an hour and went back to the sims 3 bc it’s sooooo boring! I can’t imagine buying packs for sims 4 when sims 3 packs have so much stuff it’s amazing!

EA hasn't "gotten" greedy, they've always been greedy. That's how business works. Capitalism is broken. I hated sims3 on a personal level. I'm a sims2 aficionado (tho I started with sims1 as well) and I played that until toddlers came out for sims4. I play 4 now and have found that the game improved tons with growing together EP - yeah I know there are lots of people that don't like it or family play, but just in a general way, I can play and not get bored now. It's fun so I'm getting my money's worth of entertainment out of it. Satch is enjoying it but still hates it which makes me laugh - especially as his audience is the (estranged) sims4 audience :)

For me, Sims 4 was my first Sims game. I have easily 700+ hours on it (not including it sitting idly when I took a break or something). And I got it last year when it went free-to-play. So even with the money I spent on it (almost $300 for the packs I snatched on sale), I do feel like I am getting my money worth.
However, I have to agree with the criticisms this game has received. Thanks the gods I didn't have a way to play this game when it first released. Because without these packs and the base game improvements, Sims 4 would have soured my Sims experience entirely.

EA is just not early Maxis before EA when Sims was developed. Will Wright and his early team of Sims/Sim City creators are pretty much gone. Sims 1-3 felt like relatives, true sequels to the previous versions offering something that enhanced the previous experience in core gameplay. Sims 4 does not. It’s basically upgraded Sims aesthetics.
Honestly, Sims 4 2023 is growing on me but that’s cause I DID NOT buy every product at launch nor do I own every pack. And with my limited time on the weekend to play for hours, there’s packs I still want that I haven’t purchased yet. They can keep horse ranch, way too expensive for not enough features and sim 2 is STILL my main gameplay tbh. Such an incredible game after what, two decades? But Maxis (before becoming a division of EA) was a different beast then, under EA they are just different even if the name ‘Maxis’ still exist. EA is doing, actually, just what I expect of EA.
@@saganathasmeAs a Sims 2 loyalist I so agree, toddlers got me interested in Sims 4 and by actually waiting not only did I get Sims 4 free and get to play an evaluate it for a bit, some of the bundles make getting a few packs easier now. Sims 4 is not close to as terrible as it was at launch and I just now accept it as a completely separate game I play alongside my ongoing Sims 2 legacy neighborhoods.

Plenty of reasons to be frustrasted with EA/Maxis, but they said that about project rene and specifically about the UI, meaning how little information they can have on screen with the players still understanding what the sims are doing and why they're doing it.

and My first pet stuff comes with hamsters, gerbils ect which are also common household pets just like cats and dogs are. HOW DID THE SIMS 3 HAVE 1 PACK FOR EVERYTHING AND THEN THE SIMS 4 HAS LIKE 4 SEPERATE PACKS

The biggest mistake of horse ranch is that you have to own a horse to ride one.
Expansive and cross-pack content off the top of my head: proper horse stables lot type with the ability to just ride a horse (competitions can be rabbitholes), learn to ride, take kids to horse riding practise, horseback rides in different events, horse riding clubs, wild horses in the new world, actually seeing your horses needs, active career taking care of horses and training them, horse wagons, hay fields, ponies, horses getting sick, horseback camping, etc... oh well, at least they did nectar to let us wash it all down somehow.
The completionist syndrome you keep mentioning sounds a lot like the sunken cost fallacy, which is a very real thing that game companies explicitly use to keep players around! Basically, once you've spent enough of your time and money on something, you're less likely to abandon it even if it's begun to have a negative impact on your health, relationships, personal economy, etc. Because you don't want to have wasted everything that you've already given up until that point. It's easy to create an addiction that way.
2 things that boil my p!ss about the horse pack is the not being able to set a course with the jumps and barrels. And the mounting glitch where your sim just gets off the horse the second they get on. I had to mount my horse 10 times the other day because the sim just kept getting off!

Considering that EA and Maxis are headquartered in the Bay Area, which is having a housing problem due to high housing prices, I’m betting that the issue is that most of the developers are working from home and barely talking to one another, resulting in them all falling behind on implementing gameplay that inevitably gets dropped from the final product

I'm not buying it until its on a steep discount. I completely agree too! There just isn't enough to justify it as an expansion pack. I actually quit the sims 4 before cottage living, probably the pack I'd love the most, but I was just sick of having to use mods to fix my game and having to test them every time we had an update. Some modders have completely left and I LIKE those mods but they are now completely broken. Its just not worth it anymore for me. When I realized how heavily I was relying on mods to keep my game going... I quit. I still play the sims 3, though I REALLY wish they would give us an update like the Mac one so that it would play better on new PCs!

I used to barrel race growing up, and they could have AT THE VERY LEAST, added a third barrel in the barrel training item. In barrel racing, you race around three barrels… not in a circle with two barrels.
Edit to add: ALSO, it’s ridiculous that the “intensely train” option for the barrels is literally just trotting or cantering gently around in an oval around the barrels. No amount of intense training was had 🙄
It's the same with jumping. We don't jump and then turn round and jump back over the same one. Why can't we make courses or at least have one in each neighborhood that we could use.
The stirrups not being attached to the leather and somehow stay on the feet really annoys me and then I noticed western stirrups on an English saddle so I went back to sims 3 horses 🤣

Yes please more let's plays you're so entertaining!! I really wish EA would stop pushing out these packs and just go back to refreshing the packs. The Spa Day refresh added a good amount of content that made it feel more worth the money, and refreshing their older packs would go a long way to building up confidence in the team. Especially if they want us to believe in them enough to buy the Sims 5 someday.
Satch, you’re spot on. The development team is horrible. They don’t care about their product or the community, the main focus is on the money. And you’re probably correct about the hiring process, where the priority is anything but the actual skill and passion for the project. Someone in the comment section said that EA is like McDonald’s of IT companies, and I can’t help but agree. Sims 2 is as good as it is because the development team was ambitious about it, not about the profits they can make of it, they kept that ambition for Sims 3, but then something went wrong so now we’re here and honestly, I feel like this is the end. It’s never going to get any better, so enjoy what you have while you can.

It's outrageous that there are so many things in packages that don't work. And it also cannot be repaired afterwards. Sometimes it seems like as many packages as possible have to come out to sell. And that the quality is put on the back burner as a result. Yesterday I watched a let's play by someone and the restaurant staff (dine out) also did everything except what they were told. And OMG I can't say it often enough but your unique laugh makes me laugh too. I just love it haha.
The Sims 4 didn't just murder my love for the franchise. It played a cheery song at the funeral, took a selfie with the grave and then continued to come back every pack release to dance and spit on that grave.
As a horse girl who played Sims 3 Pets amongst other horse games, the Sims 4 horse ranch looks horrendously boring. I agree, we don’t necessarily need to see a full on horse show in the Sims 4, but not being able to build your own obstacle courses? IRL, when you’re learning to ride, you will start with only one small jump. But there’s also flat work, jumps of varying sizes, serpentines, etc. seeing the horse go in a tiny circle over the same jump over and over again just looks sad. 😂 I am so glad I got cottage living over horse ranch. Cottage living is soooo much prettier (IMO) and feels like a full expansion pack. The mini sheep and goats seems like a crappier version of the llamas and cows. They serve the exact same function. The ONLY two things from the ranch pack that I wish I had were the horses themselves and the wine making feature. 😂

I think the issue with EA is they are a large company with greedy shareholders and things are structured around profit more than anything else. Having a virtual Monopoly on Sims type games, they can do anything without fearing losing customers at this point. In seven months, I think, that is set to change, but clearly no one at EA has read that memo yet. [rolls eyes]
Anyways, their executives probably did put limits on the developers to make the pack in this amount of time. No exceptions. And the Guru's themselves probably did the best they could in that timeframe. But I am not responsible for paying their paychecks. I do not have to buy this pack just for them.
Horse Ranch is not worse but tbh is not for everyone,many people are not interested in horses! My Wedding Stories could have been such a good pack,more usability but unfortunatelly there are many glitches...However I sometimes play with MWS and it works it fun,I prefer it over horses!

Remember that meme for "Game of Thrones" - the drawing of a horse from head to tail that depicted how much worse the art and rendering became throughout? Maybe the horse pack was EA's easter egg of that. It was a bit of fun for a minute. My sim was off on another unstoppable task between every horse interaction. Way too many demanding chores for all the resets to fix glitches imho. The frustration topped the fun pretty quickly.
It's sad that the quality of the gameplay of The Sims 4 continues to decline. Build/buy and CAS assets are cute but a "cute" aesthetic isn't enough to make a life simulation game enjoyable, we need depth which Sims 4 clearly lacks. I still play Sims 4 from time to time but I tend to focus more now on TS3 and TS2 because those games are better in terms of gameplay
My game is so glitchy right now ever since I got horse ranch (not even currently playing with those features) that I stopped playing it and went to sims 3 for the first time.
If you want to play the sims 3 I highly recommend it and you can make it run a lot easier and more smoothly with just a few mods! People have had like 15 years to make mods that make the game run way better lol. Look up “tips for making sims 3 run better” on TH-cam and there’s a lot of videos suggesting all the same things like the smooth patch mod! Coming from someone with a couple thousand hours in TS4 who tried out TS3 like this and hasn’t switched back since 😅

Valid rant. One thing to be mindful of though diversity hires still need to be qualified and competent employees. So any hires meant to diversify their staff are hardly the fault for these lackluster packs. In fact most times, people who are "diversity hires" tend to be overachievers in order to even compete alongside other "non-diversity" (? lol) applicants. Most issues with a company this big are almost always the fault of poor management (people and project) from mid-level to top. So, yes let's shit on EA but maybe not the employees who are probably not even paid their worth. To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised at the top-level if there are folks who don't even actually care about this game or its quality or its content and they probably make really harsh deadlines, cut back on quality assurance and just probably in general are unwilling to make more realistic deadlines because of profit benchmarks etc.

i know everyone enjoys playing differently but for myself, paranormal stuff pack and nifty knitting offer more long-term playability than horse ranch. as stuff packs!! horse ranch seems soulless and lazily implemented in every way. barely a game pack even. i haven't seen glitches like this since wedding stories fr 💀

I SOOOO agree that having an “Indoor Animals / Pets pack” with tanks and cages, cats and dogs etc… and having an “Outdoor Animals Pack” just would be so nice 🎉 Also I agree simmers are stuck in a toxic relationship with EA and EA just keeps taking advantage of us 😮

Thinking on the "some type of aesthetic 'living'" type of pack, I think Horse Ranch could have been improved (and possibly even made worthy of being an expansion) if it was instead a "Western Living" pack, and besides just horses, there were other playable features that went along with that "Old US West" kind of aesthetic: mechanical bulls in the bars, with weekly competitions; mining/panning for gold with a jewelry making skill; a new active career or two such as large animal vet or dude ranch owner (with the ability to rent out rooms to guest sims and teach them to ride a horse or use a lasso); maybe even some new non-active careers like rodeo clown or cowboy/cowgirl (where working hours would be a couple of days while your sim was off doing a cattle drive; and yes, rodeos or horse competitions that, while a rabbit hole experience, still involved pop-ups or something that would wake the player up so they felt involved in the outcome. I can't help but feel that with a little bit of ambition and research they could have done so much with this particular topic; and I don't think that any of these ideas are outside the realm of what could be done in a Sims 4 expansion. So just getting glitchy horses and mini-animals that die easily in a large-ish (for the Sims 4) world is an utter disappointment; 100% agree with your rant.

I have observed that EA, mainly because of the sims 4, are creating a whole generation of new pirates because it has become : kill or be killed,, screw them or get screwed by them. Peeps also tend to get all their other games for free too to gain back all the $ they have lost on low quality cash-grabby content for the sims 4.
They are pretty much shooting themselves in the foot, (EA AND Maxi) by doing these low-life greedy tactics
I think either a Horse Ranch Pack refresh or a free update with Unicorns would be a good idea. Simmer Erin has posted a theory that there will be a "My first pet stuff 2.0" for Horses. It fould be fairer to add that with a free addon, because I fully agree that there is not that much in horse-ranch. I think Cottage living had more gameplay. New lot challenges, the animals, the jobs from town, big plants... Horseranch feels less. I recently bought werewolves and really liked how much gameplay it brings. (Allthough maybe having a werewolve working as a doctor in combination with get to work was not my cleverest idea...) Maybe they ran out of time finishing the game, but in that case adding things in via sims delivery express or free update would be a way to make up for that. I haven bought and thus haven'T played horse ranch, but all videos I watched had horses clipping, horses appearing anywhere, at least one weird glitch with simses body, so yeah it seems to be maybe not supper buggy but at least glitchy.

I’m so tired of watching those Legacy let’s plays where everything is cc, the sims live in their boring suburban houses, the infants have those bloody eye lashes and look like 30 year olds with a full face of makeup. I won’t be surprised if we’ll get eye lashes for the bloody horses and the mini goats later
I personally would love more Let's Plays as I mentioned in other videos comments - you can do any type of them you want. Occults, Uni, make them sugar babies, turn them into crime fighters, doctors or dream home decorators I would love to watch any of it! With you blend of humor and chaos I think any type you picked to do would be a ton of fun and while I only speak for myself, I truly believe others would feel the same and want to watch!

I just finished both aspirations and am so relieved. Training the horse and nector making became so repetitive. I absolutely loved my unicorn (I have SpinningPlumbob’s unicorn mod) and was sad to see the unicorn go but I was so bored. I feel like I got everything out of the pack that I could.

The ranch hand is the worst. If they turned up they would take care of the plants, feed the chicken, repair what's broken and clean the house.
I know I can tell them not to take of the plants and not to repair stuff. But you have to tell them every single day anew and then they still might ignore this.
They never reset the obstacles, they never cleaned the stalls, they never refilled the hay, they never brushed the horses. If they had nothing to do they might talk to the horses but just as often would read a book or talk to plants.
They constantly ran after the chickens to feed them even though they had feed laying all over the place. But they never interacted with the sheep or goats.
They would slightly brush the cow, but not really either and neither clean the hut nor refill the food. Nor would they clean the chicken house.
Even when I had gotten rid of all animals except horses, shut the greenhouse and house to everyone but my sim and made sure there was nothing else to do but take care if the horses would they at most talk to them.
Ich chose to get a butler instead. No need for constant rehire. I take care of the animals, they take care of everything else.
I genuinely believe it’s a matter of incompetence. If I was a skilled developer or programmer, I would most certainly not work for EA. Which leaves the runt of the litter. I mean, they were blabbering on about the difficulties in creating horses and the amount of work they put in. Yet, they simply reused all the existing animations from TS3. It’s exactly the same. The way the Sims mount the horse and are thrown of. The way the horses play with the ball, etc. The probably just copied the code (that’s why there is still traces of unicorns in the code).
To be fair, even a skilled programmer would face many limitations with the game’s coding. They add new coding with every new pack. If you keep piling code over a brittle framework, you will encounter multiple bugs that cannot be fixed without breaking something else. This is where we are now. Presumably this is one of the reasons why there is so little new gameplay, apart from the fact that cas and build items are much cheaper to produce and implement.
As much as I would like a great Sims game, I believe it is a lost cause. I’ll keep watching TS4’s exitus from the sidelines.

Also yeah, I don't get when people justify that Horse Ranch should be an expansion pack because it has more 15 lots and that the world looks beautiful or that the horse animations take a long time to do. lol. Season didn't come with a world, so not a single lot was added. But do I think that's an expansion pack? Yes, it is. Seasons expands how you play the game. Expansion packs should expand your gameplay, not how the world looks or how many lots you can build on. And animations should be smooth horse or not.
I always thought that extention packs were packs that play into everyday game play.
Think like weather, high school, get to work, maybe even city living.
Just, if it's big enough and it plays into every day then it's an extention pack.
Meanwhile I thought game packs were a lil more niche, like it has alot have stuff but it lives in its own world and you can go your entire game without interacting or noticing that pack.

There are some things here I agree with and something I do not. The sims 3 had it's own set of issues that people seem to have conveniently forgotten about. The routing was awful for one. Also, I'm personally not getting half the glitches you did. Whether or not you consider it an expansion pack will depends on what you like. I love horses so I get a lot out of it and the breeding is a ton of fun for me. That said, you are absolutely right about the competitions, and i wish they were like the sims 3 ones. Personally i like the pack and don't think it's worse than My Wedding Stories but agree it could have been so much better. Yes to unicorns for free......and not in the fairy pack!!

7:43 I understand that hiring the right people could be a cause of the issues, but I was confused about your comment on “diversity hiring” instead of hiring “skilled people.” The Sims 4 has a LOT of problems. We’ve been talking about the cultural insensitivity and lack of diversity in the game forever, and I’d think having more diverse staff would have helped with that problem at least.
The issues with this specific pack are a result of greed and laziness on the part of EA. They know they can get away with charging premium prices for sub-par products and so they continue to do it.
