Can you imagine if you actually had to interact for the competitions though, like knowing Sims 4 it would take you six hours to walk up to a vault and then your sim would randomly dismount mid competition and start doing push-ups 💀
An interactive pop up where you have to use strategies, maybe with occasional extra choices that influence performances would be a perfect rabbit hole.
That's because Sims 4 is really only focused ON build/buy and CAS. Almost as if it's the best they can do, so that's where MOST of the focus goes, but it sucks because gameplay is why you want to play a game, but it's really just not there in Sims 4.
"Instead of making it gameplay, they made it a fake experience you have to imagine is happening" 😭😭😭😭 That's Sims 4 as a whole!! I gotta use my damn imagination for literally everything
GET READY for the next expansion pack: the Sims4 - PIG LIFE - ! Raise your own pigs, feed them, hug them, play in the mud. Build your own pig farm and collect shit for your own eco-friendly bio-gas plant 🐷
I’m not into horses at all and have stopped buying dlc’s like 2 or 3 years ago, but I’d love pigs. Not as an EP, but as part of a proper pet pack. But that’s not gonna happen, because they’ve already added a lot of animals, they just made them boring or non interactable. A base game update would be needed, but that’s even less likely.
In the sims 3 pets there were so many obstacles with different difficulty levels and salt for the horses to lick. It’s ridiculous how little content there is in this pack
@@sleekoduckwarning about horse training in sims 3: My horse trainer sim got to a very high level in the horse skills and during practice they caught fire when jumping through the ring of fire and died. 😢 I’m still broken over that
It’s really refreshing to have an HONEST sims review from a TH-camr. Most of the time they pretend issues don’t exist until months after a pack is released.
I like lilsimsie, but she does this.. She gave this pack a good review and only said a few offhand things about it, but they were never negative. Ik she gets the packs for free now and is prolly afraid to say negative stuff, but I don't trust her reviews anymore because of it.
She was bigging this pack up when in all honesty. The gameplay is lacking and we all know that. Don’t worry though. She’ll talk about the lack of gameplay in it when fairies is announced …. 🤔
I honestly feel an overall of 6.5 out of 10 is very generous. We can't hate you Satch. Personally would have deducted another point or two from cas and build-buy.
Well, he added the Cas, BB, Gameplay and others grades and divided by 6 (Number of categories). In my opinion he should have made the gameplay value 50% of the final grade, so It would be something like the following: 9+8+3+9+7=36 (not counting gameplay here) 36/5=7,2x0,5=3,6 3(gameplay grade)x0,5=1,5 1,5+3,6=5,1 (final grade)
I’d be much harsher. it’s like a 2 out of 10 for me. I do count that I already own other packs that do the same thing. No unicorns, no playable horses, no kid and toddler stuff, grindable skills and a play-pretend competition. Nah. I’d buy the mini-goats as a stuff pack, but everything else is horse… dung.
I didn't even realize that there were no horse themed kids toys! O_O how did they make an entire horse expansion pack without a rocking horse! Or one of those stick horses?! That would have been perfect for kids too young to ride horses, or as a way for kids to practice, or even as a part of a child's aspiration be a horse rider! Oh man they really let kids down in this. I'm officially expecting a My First Horse pack geared towards children :/
In Sims 3 horse competitions, while it's also a rabbit hole, you are shown a live scoreboard, where you can see how you're doing and change your technique accordingly. I think there are three options, something like "ride carefully", "take risks" and "go all out". I don't know why they didn't do the same thing in Sims 4, especially since they did replicate everything else.
This is the comment I was looking for. Being involved, even just a little bit, and at least being able to see how your horse was doing, definitely made it a better experience in Sims 3.
Couldn't agree more. It's a crazy way to make people who don't have cottage living want to get it to complete the theme. I'm surprised they didn't include bulls tho. They reminded more of the West than goats lol 😂 omg we could have had baby cows if they added bulls and would have been great with that new grill man. Missed opportunity 😂
Then we would only have one world, less lots, less interactions and less quality. Plus none of it would make sense since one is British and one is American.
They also lost the opportunity of making an override of the forgotten woodworking table. They could have made woodworking a skill itself. Sims being able to make their own stable, fix it, to make new objects decorative or functional to sell. Even to make their own houses, with exclusive swatches. We already have even the animation (from build treehouses and the rocket ship) for it, and we all know Maxis doesn't have any shame for recycling. But hey, even more simple than recycling, it is doing nothing at all
I would have liked to see some sort of leather working skill. Where you could make new saddles/bridles or repair them if they wore out/broke randomly. Knitting skill should also be able to make new horse blankets/socks. I don't own the pack so I'm not sure that is the case but I haven't heard anyone mention it so I doubt it.
@@amberbouley oooh some sort of blacksmith skill would have been really fun too! that also fits the western theme really well. Maybe like a cool festival where you can sell your iron sculptures/leather work/kniting stuff would have been super cool. And also finding iron and stuff from exploring some caves and stuff. Also, I don't own the pack, but from what i know from the sims 4, adding gameplay to other packs is very rare, so i doubt knitting was added in like that.
Without open worlds, horses are no different from bikes and the household limit inhabits you from making a proper ranch. You can't have a big family\workers or a bunch of horses. They could've at least added a few minor features, like rabbit hole horse riding classes and a ranch lot trait to give you special features and maybe money based on how much you're producing. For unicorns, it would've been so cool for secret locations to make a return. Even just a tiny hidden lot where you meet a unicorn and learn how to craft some kind of potion to turn your horses into unicorns. I don't even want many features, just have them give you rainbow poop (special fertilizer) and one or two things they can do. Maybe they can heal you if you have a curse or disease from other packs. Definitely skipping this one.
@@PotentialPiratethink cars would kind of play off the horse girl vibes, but instead be car boys. Well I'm not particularly looking for a car pack I could see some routes they go with it. Things like bringing back the fixer upper car to level handiness. Teens could get a driving skill and after school driving lessons. Kids could learn to make a little box car toy, or get a new racetrack toy kinda like a dollhouse. There could be cross pack compatibility with Eco living and actual carpooling, maybe with the drawback of having to leave early for work. You could have rabbit hole mechanic jobs, or car racer (thinking NASCAR), and a part time job to wash cars. You could have an old-fashioned car show. Build/buy include some new garage items, tool benches/boxes. "Drive in movie theater" and "Road Trip" could be rabithole style activities. Death by car accident and woohoo in a car to cover those two. If they want to go a more general things with wheels route then you could have dirtbikes and some off roading trail rides. There could be scooters for kids/teens. Toddlers could get those little 4 wheeler thingies or tricycles. And now I've spent way too long thinking of ideas for a pack that's never going to exist and yet still had more content ideas than what the Sims team added to horses....
@@Sinovianbut without an open world sadly the gameplay will be missing from a a gameplay, most of the things mentioned can be modded in and there’s cc for cars etc. and there’s cc skills and jobs. At this point I’d rather pay modders the 40 bucks to make an aweseome “expansion pack” that would actually be good than to trust capitalistic EA with it
@@Orangecatenergy well I'm not going to argue about who to pay. I haven't paid EA for anything in years lol. I think there's gameplay potential there that doesn't involve you watching a vehicle move around a map, but I still don't think EA would do it nor even do it in a quality way if they did.
No matter what anyone likes to say about you, this was a truly fair review! You gave credit where credit was due with CAS and BB, understanding not everyone has every pack so for them there is no repeat items as well as how good they executed the theme. I appreciate you going in hard with gameplay thought because people need to take their rose-coloured glasses off and realise this is supposed to be an EXPANSION pack so there should be so much more gameplay that EXPANDS the entire game. You’re right, as an end-consumer, it is not on us to “think about how hard this was to animate”….. well guess what, I don’t. This is a multibillion dollar company and a basic economics class will educate you that if a company wants my money, they need to provide what I’m willing to pay for. Unfortunately, too many people either have their parent’s pay or just don’t care about their money so EA and Maxis know they can do the bare minimum and get away with it. Too many comments of “I know this is a Game Pack but look at cute horses and sheep”….. ok rant over lol
oh, so some of the people get their parents to pay? i feel so sad.. hope they'll not waste the parents hard-earned money too much, working is not that fun..
Exactly! There are games sold for 60€ with quality that's a million times better, extremely fleshed out stories, characters, a huge open world etc. It's really no excuse to take 40€ for something like this and then say "But it really is a lot of work". Look at Red dead redemption or the witcher 3 or whatever. It's a world of difference especially when you start to consider how much you have already spend on Sims 4 DLC and how little in comparison you have to spend for games like the witcher that had me playing for over 100 hours...
@@melinaalba63 Yeah I came to this comment to say the exact same thing. It’s crazy to think that it’s a possible excuse when you have a red dead redemption for example, which is only like 20€ more than this dlc on its own. Even though like 30% of Red Dead Redemption revolves around horses
@@Ouroboraa5119 yeah, it's just so sad to see such a cool franchise, that I loved playing for years, it was the first game I ever Played, go down in quality so much... especially since there are, at least for now, not that many good life simulation games. @@Lyagani oh yeah of course LGR too! I think he stopped doing reviews for new packs as regularly because EA were too annoying and kept putting in too many chairs, but his reviews are fantastic
Considering the main point of the pack is the horses they lacked in cas and i feel like they should have gotten more toy items because their fun kinda goes away real fast and its annoying to get it back especially when they refuse to play with the ball. And fyi for the people who choose to still stay delusional about the fact that this pack has bugs while literally watching this video a sim i created in henford appeared in chestnut on her horse and just stood there for a bunch of in game hours. Funny enough when she first appeared a random townie spawned beside her with a bike rode literally like 2 seconds in front of her got off then stood looking at his bike for while. Also during this i just stayed looking at the world just for sims movement and in a full sim day i seen 3 npc horses/riders plus my one sim.
I've been using debug to get my horses unstuck, they have been stuck in open spaces around the lot....like starving to death next to a full hay through
Skyrim (for example) is what, €30 more expensive than this and have x1638191 more features than this, so no, the "horses were hard to animate 👉🏻👈🏻" is not a valid excuse for the price.
@@fishkingoftheaquarium7605 It really feels like Sims 4 is just ripping off ideas from Sims 3 and depriving them of the same depth that was featured in the Sims 3... I really wish the Sims 4 was willing to be bold, try out new ideas, and make the expansion packs actually feel expansive. This expansion and others have just felt like a checklist of features and skills then they're done. The nectar-making skill in this expansion isn't even a full-fledge skill despite being one of the big selling points of the expansion.
You are making so many good points about missing gameplay, and I strongly agree with you that EA should've put more effort into the competitions. I watched another review by an actual equestrian, and she said it was a shame that we couldn't make a jumping course or lead the horse around like in the Sims 3! Sims 3 also had western AND classic horse riding saddles and reins (and you could ride bare-back haha). In the Sims 4, EA could've added new things like a round horse pen where you can see your sim train for competitions, or even a round horse bathing pen, adding new horse shoes, ponies. HELLO, WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT PONIES XD. It would've been so cute to have parents teach their kids how to ride on ponies...
Ponies would have been super cool! Especially so because while yes, you could have the kids ride them, but ponies can pull carts! Imagine an adult Sim riding a cart with a pony. That would have been so great and would have been another skill variety.
Its sad that there isn't anything for kids and toddlers, they could've made something like ponies for the kids to ride. AND NO WOOHOO LOCATION, I am shocked. Keep up the great work Satch!! ❤
because instead, it's the horses that's woohooing? idk, maybe we already have many woohoo, not that important compared to kids and toddlers. kids can ride horses. how about toddlers, can't interact with mini goats?
I was a bit disappointed with the build/buy. I felt it lacked a lot of stuff for actual stables/horse care like more saddle/bridle racks, grooming kits, etc. Also, I'm really disappointed we can't make a jumping course like in the Sims 3.
I always wait for your take on DLCs before purchasing a pack especially Horse Ranch because I'm underwhelmed with what I saw so far. I appreciate your honesty Satch ❤ I look forward to your Let's Play featuring Shanice in her cowgirl era.
lol. better wait for carls sim guy. he's the God of sim review. this channel, is not that neutral and not talk it as a whole. but the general point is indeed, true. but lack of explanation of this and that.
@@zen_mindset1 Sims 4 is getting VERY expensive, some of us may need to make choices. Especially if you want to get all the main packs, you may need to choose which one you want at full price, and which ones you need to wait for a sale.
@@syrasha_ I pre-ordered this pack on CDKeys at only £24, discounted from the normal price of £40. I didn't get the pre-order three 'special' items, but I don't care about that
My theory is that the sims team are expecting lots of new horse lover players to come to the sims 4 for this pack to play as a horse game, so they felt okay recycling the same sorts of ideas for items etc as their target audience don’t have the other packs. Maybe that’s why they felt comfortable having this pack release so soon after growing together - because they were going after two different audiences (long term players vs new players)
The Sims Team set the parameters of what an Expansion Pack, Game Pack, and Stuff Pack should contain to be classified as such. From everything I have seen, this is a Game Pack. They did this with Cats & Dogs too. When they first announced Cats & Dogs, it was as a Game Pack. They just price the Game Packs they know will sell Really well as Expansions. It is not just animal related packs either. Family gameplay packs get the same treatment. However, this is mostly just My Opinion.
for an expansion pack i wouldve at least expected a new job or two, this pack really feels like a game pack instead of an expansion pack ☹ It wouldve made so much more sense as a gamepack. Hopefully we'll get unicorns with fairies and whatnot..lol
It‘s really such a missed opportunity with this pack. Unicorns alone could have been sold this pack miles away but knowing EA, there will be a stuff pack / Gameplay for unicorns. I wish they either had put this with cats and dogs like in the Sims3 or just put more effort into the horse pack by adding more gameplay like that you could be a teacher for children to learn how to ride a horse and maybe earn some money from it and more, it‘s not as hard as they make it seem like.
The races might have been a rabbit hole in TS3, but you still had to manage your horse's performance. Also, that rabbit hole was in a large open world, which it is not in TS4.
I absolutely agree with your take on the pack. I started it up, created a Sim and a horse to have a play and get used to the pack. After about 45mins I was bored and went back to my legacy family. I love what's there but it's no where near enough for the price. I was so looking forward to my Sims kid becoming a vet to treat the horses but nope 😢
After seeing this, I can say EA and Riot games are now working togheter on scamming people. EA made a game pack and named it expansion, riot made a legendary skin and named it ultimate
You and Plumbella are the only ones I trust for honest looks at packs. I easily get excited when others are excited, so I have to have someone like you bring me back down to Earth. 😂
I wish they'd even added a work at home career that just guided you through daily ranch duties if you wanted to be a horse breeder or a nectary. I like the change to the aspirations!
I don't think you're wrong, I am a horse lover. Grew up young with 9 years of horse riding, this is BARELY a Game pack. Expansion I am failing to see how. At this point they're really valuing building more than gameplay. And splitting as much as they can to gather more money before they die to upcoming competition. They couldn't even bother with unicorns? Make a rabbit whole like the tree in base game that brings you to a spacial place where you can find them. Like come on, seriously? Heard that they also had problems with adding a new lot type but it's not the first time they said that. Coding is hard, as someone who does work in teams as a concept artist, I had back and forths with programmers and it's very difficult but if you, as a big company can't afford to find a way to make your programmers fix it damn. I don't want to know what the sims code looks like now. Going back to the pack i've yet to play it myself, I've seen people review it in all sauces and all have the same opinion, even those who usually defend it and love it are all SEVERELY underwelmed. I wouldn't have minded the rabbit holes IF there was more gameplay elsewhere, there's not much at all, they could've included the feature where you see live where you and your horse are placing yourselves at during the race since they copied the sims 3 for it already, the bugs are giving wedding core. I will play it more to form a more solid opinion and ideas of what they could've added, but as a horse person I deeply agree with everyone beeing underwhelmed and disappointed. They did... maybe not even the bare minimum and want to be praised. "Oh the horses took long to animate" I mean... yeah... they're the FOCUS of the pack I'd hope SO. But it's not enough. But it is definitely NOT worth the price, it feels like their budget went out of hand and they didn't study enough to make it worth the price, porbably some indecision inside teams or miscomunications. It's better than saying they just don't care which I don't think it's the case for people who work in it, just the higher ups. And the fact that they think they had such a brilliant idea to make animals not playable makes the pack much less valuable too, since that also gave a more solid value to packs in other the sims. And also- a minor thing maybe but bigger lots? i don't know what I'm supposed to fit a horse in a 20x20 lot or even the slightly bigger ones LOL And they couldn't include ranches BECAUSE of poor coding? since they've been lamenting this issue for YEARS now, how come they didn't fix it yet? As many things in the game sadly/ But one would think the code would be core fundamental in a game so big. Apparently not.
I can 100% guarantee that unicorns are going to be an entirely separate DLC that they purposefully did not release with this pack to double dip and get twice the amount of money for the work they did creating Horse Ranch
It’s so weird, the pack almost feels like it’s lacking an identity. Its main feature is obviously the horses, but there was so little focus put on horse gameplay. They added the wine- I mean nectar making which I suppose matches the ranch theme. And then sheep and goats? Because… Ranch? It really lacks depth, like they threw in a bunch of surface level content rather than going all out on the horses. It could have been a good gamepack, but expansion pack? No.
The bed thing bugged me as well. I made a horse for an existing family in the Cottage Living world and he would not sleep on the bed at all. Would go into the 'stable' I built but would not sleep on the bed even when I assigned it to him. I then made a new family with a horse and placed them in the new neighbourhood, did the exact same thing with the horse and she sleeps on the bed 9 times out of ten at. So i don't know what it is, why one does and one doesn't, if it's just a really finicky thing, if you have to place it in a certain way, but it's an inconsistant function to say the least and is probably still buggy.
I think it’s a feature. I have a foal who hates to sleep outside and never will even if there is a bed there (tried it before building the stable), a mare who will kind of sleep in the bed sometimes and outside sometimes, and another mare who will only sleep outside the stable. It just seems to be whatever their preference is. I haven’t tried putting the bed outside again for the last one to see if she’d use it (I hadn’t thought of it until now) but maybe see if that works.
I bought it for the full expansion pack price but agree that it's worth only the game pack price. And they didn't even have to add much to change my mind about this. Ponys that could work like bikes to be ridden by kids, and horses for teens and adults. Add that after school activity. It's not like that's a lot of work to add. Actual breedable unicorns. If you can inherit hair color, why not a horn? And clothes and accessories for all ages. I would have liked a rocking horse and hobby horse. Or bull riding. But I get that they all need new animations. And it's really a shame they couldn't even think to add a new woohoo bush in form of a haystack. Or a hottub in form of a half barrel. I mean, come on, some things are so obvious and shouldn't be too hard to add since it's just reskinning items that are already there. Though I'm still waiting for the broom in the dust kit to clean the dirty floors in off the grid houses. So, obvious seems not to be quite so obvious...
The cave reminds me of Sims Medieval, you had to go there a lot to finish your quests. But let me get this straight, you can't actually visit the equestrian center? They showed it in the trailer right?
Yea, i think they just edited the trailer so it looks like they are in the equestrian center, but its actually the lot next to equestrian centre, that is a park or wathever is that. Kinda scammy to edit it like that to confuse everyone, but its a marketing strategy...mehh
The one they showed in the trailer is right outside the equestrian center. It's in the same lot so no loading screen. You can practice barrel racing & horse jumping there. The equestrian center is a rabbit hole building for the actual competitions.
Well this just supports the thought I had as soon as this pack was announced. This was supposed to come with cottage living. They just split it for more money. What a shame! I might wait for a sale otherwise I won’t buy it.
The nectar drinking thing - that they get dazed and pass out - is exactly the same as drinking fizzy juice in Eco Lifestyle. So if you have Eco you can just make and drink juice and it's the exact same thing. As a console player all I want is for my Sims to be able to get drunk. I probably would have bought this pack of nectar was different. I know it's a PG rated game, but as a kid I was woohooing Mortimer Goth and violently burning to death in an oven fire on the Sims 1 😮💨 are kids even playing TS4? Idk why they're so G rated when adults are their primary player base.
@@Hi.imdoryit's a bit overly complex for younger kids that you'd want to shield from drug and alcohol themes... But also it has so much implied sexual stuff in it that I really don't get why they don't just say f it and make it have more adult stuff in it. Kids will still play it if their parents allow them access - look at other games EA publishes, aimed at young men, like Apex. My ex used to play that and there were times where very small children would be on mic. Once there was a literal toddler who sounded about 3 or 4 on mic playing it. I feel like bc they see The Sims as an inherently feminine game for a mostly fem audience, they infantilise it by making lower rater and more kid friendly. Which is nuts bc about 50% of the userbase, myself included, are here to play murder and mayhem simulator 5000. Idk, just let me get my Sims drunk. Let them form a coke habit if I want them to. Give me something worse than woohooing in a dumpster, EA, I'm begging.
If any of you play on PC or Mac there is a mod called Basemental Drugs that allows you to do all of the above! It’s so well made that it looks official, and let me say, it’s super fun.
idk, for me it's the opposite. Even though i'm adult, i prefer if the game has less sexual/violence/drug/etc content. For me, that way it'll be easier to share ideas or watch with families and friends. And to keep my mind clean XD
You can install mods for alcohol, drugs and whicked whims for a more enhanced woohoo experience if that's what you're looking for, but it's said EA will ban you If they find you using them
I was expecting that you would be able to build courses and have competitions like you can with dogs in the sims 4. Sure, it’s pretty basic and there’s no real judges and stuff but at least it’s something you actually do and not just sit and wait while your sim is in a rabbit hole and you have absolutely no influence over their success or failure. They should have at least included some career-like options like “try hard”, “take it easy”, “take a shortcut”, “blackmail the judge” or something fun.
Right! or maybe a random popup where you can choose an answer and that determines what will happen in the competition just like when your sim goes to work.
It could have been like an active career from get to work where you go to a secret “competition lot” and it tells you to jump the course and let your horse rest and they could have added an interaction that makes you w/t/c around the arena.
@@athomewithnessa4185 They wasted that feature (and the time and effort) on that rpg hole Satch was talking about lol. And on nectar making. @@TheJackedOLantern Exactly. Saddest part about it is that if this were an essay it STILL wouldnt have the required amount of words to pass! There isnt enough stuff in this pack to be an expansion pack, Its really just an overpriced gamepack LOL
Tbh I agree on what you’ve been saying about it should been game pack and how it’s costs more than it should. If I didn’t have the added pack of cottage living I would not have even got it. And yes they put a lot of effort into the horse animation but to me it seems like it’s on the same level of werewolves and nothing compared to Cottage Living or even Seasons. I’m disappointed that they didn’t do more to make up with the cost amount and instead went with trying to make their customers feel like they had to be happy about what we got because the team put a lot of effort… which they did but it could’ve been more focused on as a game pack and not as an expansion. I appreciate you’re willingness to be honest and transparent about this. *Edit* After playing the pack for a day I’m actually angry about this pack, it was suppose to be a cowboy pack and brought more cas to play as an indigenous tribe. This pack would’ve been great if they did more than just focus primarily on the horses and actually brought more southern culture as well as more representation of indigenous tribes of America.
I love long term aspirations too! I use the aspiration overhaul mod that does this to all the existing aspirations and even adds a few new ones. Makes it feel like your sim has an actual purpose and lifelong goals and desires.
I avoided ALL Sims TH-camrs and waited for your take! VERY disappointed that the competitions are rabbit holes. You opinion matters to me. THANK YOU!!!
I played this game pack yesterday and i'm already done. Some stuff are sooo boring, like turn around barrels for a thousand times in order to progress, that's absolutely not who you do it irl. there are a lot of mistakes with horses like something very simple : the sims don't take the reins in the right way, and that so basic and so botch. I also don't understand why the breeds don't come with pre-assigned traits (like for the dogs) and the breeds don't look like the real breeds. It's a piece of detail, but i don't get why you can't do diffrent coloured eyes... that is someting very common with paint horses who is THE ranch breed like in "Horse RANCH" 🙄
I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks she does that! She never says anything negative about any of the packs and sure, it could be because she doesn't want to risk angering the sims team to where she won't get free stuff anymore, but she could at least be honest that this is a shit expansion- barely any gameplay and worst of all; the $40 price point that should have been a $20 game pack! They're openly scamming us out of money at this point! This "expansion" is such a cash-grab it's not even funny anymore..
@@carpeomnious999 She’s an EA Game Changer so she’s going to stand by EA before consumers and her own fans sadly. But yeah… after she defended this as an expansion pack… it’s a clear sign she lost all common sense and sensibility towards this situation on the consumer side. Her reviews are all sugar coated.
Thank you so much for being one of the only unbiased Sims channels left, I'm so sick of EA buying away the integrity of most other Sims TH-camrs. Its kinda ironic that you say people should just stick to cottage living for the builds because I honestly think you should only get this pack if you already have cottage living. I mean you do get to create barns in this pack which I felt should have been in cottage living. Plus the mini-goats and mini-sheep. I feel like if you want the full farming experience then you should get both packs. But I would not buy this pack on its own if I didnt have cottage living. It just sucks that you need to pay $80 for both packs to have the full experience.
Let me just say, as a skill equestrian (10+ years of experience, a while wall of ribbons and trainer of 4 horses) the attention to detail with raising horses and caring for them and the traits that they can have is absolutely phenomenal and much better then I was expecting.
Yes! I’ve also been riding for a long time and a lot of people skip right over this part. The temperament skill raising as you interact with them in positive ways is a really nice detail. Having them react to certain things like a new item in their environment is also a nice touch since they tend to get startled with pretty much anything (mine got scared of a bug on the ground). I really love that it’s rewarding to continually interact and reinforce good behavior. Especially when you rescue a horse and then their temperament comes up when they were initially standoffish. I think this is a really integral part to the pack. While I’m definitely disappointed in some of the gameplay aspects like the rabbit hole competition center and the agility courses being a bit stagnant, I do really love how much time and effort went into the horses themselves. I think EA did a great job with blending training with bonding. I’m looking forward to the mod community releasing some content to make up for some of EA’s shortcomings. I’d imagine some scripts to allow the jump courses to be more free form, different cosmetics for the jumps and barrels, tack etc. Overall I really do like that the limited resources they were given, they invested a LOT into the horses themselves.
Do you think it’s better than Sims 3 horses or not? I’m not sure if it’s worth the switch since the sims 3 still does more right I think, but I’d love if the sims 4 proved me wrong one day 🥺
@@RanaeAllDay The “they” Im referring to is the production team for this pack. Yes, EA has many millions of dollars. However, it’s naive to say that all of their resources go to their sims team. Some of the staff have also been shuffled around so some of the people who started the pack may no longer be there. Therefore, the resources they have are limited to what the executives overlooking their project give them. It’s likely that a lot of ideas were presented to give the pack similarity to prior iterations, only for it to be struck down by the executives since it would take more time or more money to incorporate. Factoring these things in, the people who worked on the pack are probably disappointed that they couldn’t deliver everything fans were hoping for. Everything considered, I think they did very well with the horses themselves and interactions with them.
@@Lex-gl3um That's not a very valid excuse. More of a mismanagement issue. And honestly that isn't the consumer's problem and shouldn't affect the consumer's expectations.
Heck yeah, I've been waiting for your review! Love your brutal honesty since you don't sugarcoat bs that EA creates (no hate EA/jk), so finally the vid is here!! Thank you!!!
So much missed opportunity like Jame said cabinets swatches missed some reall nice smooth textures like the other furniture has. I also think that we need more Native tribal stuff. Tepi, fluts, pottery hay even archery (which I have a mod for) Hay even smithy like to craft horse shoes, we get a another Bush should.have benn a pile of hay. I think EA like to re use items too much now.
Yea i was really hoping to see some kind of Native American gameplay, i know they added some stuff in the base game but i feel like they shouldve added more in this expansion pack! Maybe then it wouldve felt more like an expansion pack instead of an overpriced gamepack.
I personally disagree about the aspirations but I completely understand where you're coming from with that. To me, whims are usually like everyday wants, or something you'd wanna have completed within a week of live-mode gameplay. Having the aspiration divided up into multiple tiers allows for more easily accessible goals that will ultimately assist in the final tiers' goals anyway, but take maybe a few weeks of in-game time. To me, it gives more things for my sims to do overall so I appreciate the 3 tier aspirations.
Really appreciate reviews like this, it really reinforced what I'd already decided, that I wouldn't buy the pack til at least 50% off, no way is it worth full price. And I'll die on the hill that horses should have come with cottage living, or cats & dogs. At this point EA are just seeing how much they can milk us.
15:32 (paraphrasing ) “ if the sims team have a problem with developing gameplay and animations it’s not the consumers problem, it’s the game developers.” YEP! 100%
You can put the goats and sheep in cottage living. Use your phone to buy them. You don't need a shed for them to sleep in. You can bottle feed them or buy the feeding trough to feed them. Supposedly you can ride your horse in other worlds. I have not bought a horse yet so I don't know how that works, maybe like the bike.
Relating to adding in a new job for this expansion pack, a horse trainer or animal groomer could have been a cool/interesting part time or full time job feature that they missed out on completely. I remember in the sims 3 pets pack you had to clean the horse stalls, but also their hooves and brush them constantly to keep their mood up! would have been a great re-addition
I haven’t played with horses yet because I was more interested in the nectar making and I will say that aspect of gameplay is pretty fun, with the ability to create an ambrosia-esque nectar, tieing nicely with gardening !!
I'm sorry but the this pack is a complete disgrace. I have enough of this sh**. There ain't no way I'm buying something as shallow as this with my hard earned money. Thank you for the Review
I wished the mechanics for the cavern would have rather be applied to the equestrian center so you might have like be semi-active on the races etc. And yeah, I wished we rather had a secret world similar to the ermit in outdoor retreat but with a unicorn instead. Also world had things, (thank god since the lots are very small) but I wish they had more things for kids. I guess if this pack was released a few years ago, it would have been great. But it feels very "old pack" in terms of gameplay. One main feature, nothing for toddlers and kids (I wished there was a rocking horse :'( ) and... That's it.
I wouldn’t have minded if it was like highschool years classes you can watch but you can’t affect anything that goes on but there are multiple things that could happen like 50 or 80 so players would spend months trying to get every possibility
I know it’s meant to be a western theme but I wish that we had some general horse riding outfits for families who have horses not in the western themed world
A lot of people make it seem like Satch is unfair/mean in his reveiws but honestly his reviews are pretty fair and just really honest. He points out the bad things but he also points out the good things too!
We're dealing with a bad case of My First Cottage Living Stuff pack here... Also I hate hate HATE mini goats and sheep. Reasons: 1. Why are they mini???? They would be just as cute in regular size, but instead they had to go the "small=cuter, and cute sells" route, while promoting an unhealthy trend of miniaturizing animals. Pushing for maximum cuteness can also be seen in the jumping animations which look straingt out of 80's Disney movie. 2. They should have been in Cottage Living! (Regularly sized ofc) They would work perfectly in the cow sheds, but unlike cows/llamas, they would fit there in pairs/threes.
The cas items are similar to something from the other packs. The buy mode items looked like it should be on Cats and Dogs pack. The thing I love for the buy mode is the dark wood swatches is beautiful and I'm obsessed with the new house doll.
The RPG-like sequence you spoke about where your sim entered a cave and experienced a scenario is very similar to the gameplay in Sims Medieval. If you haven't checked that older Sims game out, you may want to give it a go. It's quite different from the standard games in that it provides you with more little scenarios and less sprawling sandbox.
That was what I was looking for: Cross Pack Play. Thank you for that. I will be purchasing this one because I love horses, but I will, again, wait until it goes on sale (and let them get the glitches out). Also, I will purchase it with cottage living because that is the one I want more than anything in the world.
I agree - I was looking for a review based on Cross Pack Play as well! The only thing I’m really interested in from this ‘expansion’ pack are some of the build/buy items, and the sheep and goats! I want the sheep and goats so I can use them with Cottage Living, which is still - by far - my favorite expansion pack in the game. But I will definitely be waiting for a sale before purchasing this ‘expansion’. I hope you do get Cottage Living - sounds like you will love it as well! Happy Simming!!!
Your so right, any other game and horses are just an expected add on, the developers at the sims 4 must be so weak it's a whole expansion packs worth of work for then to code them, but thats not our problem...
i feel like sims would be a lot more enjoyable if they combined packs rather than released everything separately. this could've easily been part of cottage living and packs like growing together and parenthood would have also been a good as one. my problem is there are never enough features in what they release. some of the things are objectively good but it's not worth buying multiple packs for things that could've been together in the first place
Just got it, I'm almost scared to watch 😂😂😂 but I always appreciate the brutal honesty lol. I got it mostly for the landscape, just moved back to the east coast from the west so I miss it ( sort of lmao) it's so pretty 😍😍😍
I was already expecting this outcome, but damn… It’s an EP with gameplay entirely made of menu choices, not actual playing. I swear the white old rich bosses at EA must laugh at us everyday while drinking their Dom Perignons.
I really wish there had been some sort of afterschool activity for kids like a farming/animal program (in my area this is called Future Farmers of America/FFA). It could have worked like a scout career where kids had to do certain activities like gardening, doing research, chores, or taking care of animals to advance. I had expected more cosmetic features for kids as well. Horse themed toys, decor, and clothes. Even a tshirt with a horse on it. Also that horse trailer really should have atleast been a woohoo spot. I hope modders add that!
this would’ve been perfect and adorable!!! i’m actually in shock at the abysmal amount of gameplay. just brainstorming for 5 minutes i can come up with tons of super fun ideas and i’m not even a farming/horse enthusiast…. leaves A LOT to be desired
Was excited when i saw the trailer, now im debating buying it. It really has no other gameplay other than making nectars, and riding horses. You can get the same gameplay out of pets but with cows, lamas, chickens, dogs and cats lol
I just saw lilsimsies review and she claimed it was bigger and better than Cottage Living and i felt so incredibly confused when i watched the gameplay of it. The horses are great sure, but this is not a big pack by any means 💀 I dont care about it taking long to animate. EA are not starving indie devs. In fact starving indie devs are usually way more fair with pricing. Also i had to constantly reset my sims because they bugged out. One of my sims cant even eat food 💀
I do love the fact that next to nearly all lots in the world there is somewhere to take your horse to train, so its not exactly empty, for other stuff yes, but there is training grounds everywhere with barrels and jumps so you dont have to to have them on your lot ❤
I agree with your thoughts on this pack. So much is missing from this and I wish EA did better. I also hate putting out my opinions because randos seem to think it's time to attack someone. "Oh be grateful! EAxis are doing their best and you should be happy they are giving you this anyways." Just a bunch of noise but if I am going to be spending my money on something, I want quality. I want to know that I spent it on something worth it. I guess the one's who don't complain are the one's rolling deep in dough and if that's the case, share the wealth lmao. I can use a donation or three!
I get the western vibes, ok cool do western vibes, but I’m honestly distraught there is no decent horse girly outfit 😢 as someone who is not American and grew up with horses it makes me sad to not have a nice helmet that shows the braid behind the hair, some nice leggings and a shirt or blazer that doesn’t scream YE HAW
The fact that they only gave us western riding is also bothering me, don't get me wrong i love that the western style is included because in the horse community it isen't talked/ appreciated enough, but they should have included all types of riding styles when it is a expansion pack that costs a lot of money. For me who also is a rider i feel a bit disappointed of how smal the pack feels? I have waited for horses to come to the sims for a long time and a think they could have provided more in the pack. However i'm so happy that there finally are horses in the game :)
Then: Sims 4 dividing features into smaller packs means that the features will be fully fleshed out with much deeper gameplay. Now: Divided pack in Sims 4 offers more or less the same amount of gameplay as feature included in previous Sims game. Remember that in Sims 1, you can go into an actual store, walk around, and buy pets on display. Even in Sims 3, infamous for having everything in a Rabbit Hole lot, pet shop is not a rabbit hole. Also, it feels like horse "racing/training" in the trailer are a bit too exaggerated. But that's probably something to expect.
I'll give Satch credit, he ACTUALLY gave the pack a score at the end, instead of just saying "You make up your own mind, if you like horses you would enjoy this pack" like Lilsimsie and Plumbella said at the end of their reviews.
Thanks for your honest review. I think anyone that is a long time simmer that also know about the previous games would compare and be dissapointed. As a player that doesn't have anything to compare it with I think you would view it more positively and there is less to be dissapointed about because you have nothing to compare it with. At the end of the day if you are going to spend money on something you better spend it on something you truly like and think it's worth it. It's always good to look at it from different perspectives and take advice from the people that have the same experience as you. Which is why there is no need to hate on Satch cause there is enough people that have a similar background and perspective and these people should have someone to represent their opinions too. So Satch, I doubt you are reading this long message lol, but I hope you can proudly continue to be you and be honest to yourself. You don't have to apologize for anything😂. And if someone doesn't like what you have to say they can choose not to engage and just go to someone else that will talk what they want to hear. That's at least what mature people do🤷🏾♀️. Have a good day and I look forward to your lets play 😄❤
The gameplay goes up with th addition of other packs, like if you have Wedding Story and also can have retail businesses, then you can have a Sim that has a full winery and Nectar store in Tartosa, and that would be completely different gameplay than doing horse related things, also adding horses to Cottage Living would be fun. So the pack does add to the content of other packs so it does expand gameplay, but it really seems best with other packs you already have.
Watch my Horse Ranch let's play with full gameplay here -> th-cam.com/video/mAmxsxDYZIM/w-d-xo.html
Can I just say I love this review and everything you said! brava 👏
this is like a marriage between star stable and red dead redemption 2 whaha without any missions 🤣
Can you imagine if you actually had to interact for the competitions though, like knowing Sims 4 it would take you six hours to walk up to a vault and then your sim would randomly dismount mid competition and start doing push-ups 💀
It could’ve at least been pop ups like ts3
An interactive pop up where you have to use strategies, maybe with occasional extra choices that influence performances would be a perfect rabbit hole.
I was thinking the same lol. Sims can barely get through a wedding ceremony, a riding competition would be a train wreck. 🤦🏾♀️
I want it to be like the urbs, putting in different inputs to jump and maneuver
I just turn off autonomy for the selected. I can’t stand them randomly doing stuff. But I don’t play with huge households.
This is exactly why people can spend literally hours in CAS and build mode in Sims 4, but struggle to enjoy the gameplay.
This was me yesterday, spent about 2 hours in CAS building Sims. Put them in a house and then my game crashed before I saved it 👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾😮💨
Honestly even in CAS and build and buy, what makes it better are the cheats and mods.
@@katet8639 right?? The only reason I haven't deleted the game is because of mods and ccs
Feel like i can only play sims on x3 speed and just grind towards a goal then get bored
That's because Sims 4 is really only focused ON build/buy and CAS. Almost as if it's the best they can do, so that's where MOST of the focus goes, but it sucks because gameplay is why you want to play a game, but it's really just not there in Sims 4.

Ngl I really wanted pigs and other farm animals for a full Cottage Living experience!!
Don't let EA see this, they'd think it's a good idea..
I’m not into horses at all and have stopped buying dlc’s like 2 or 3 years ago, but I’d love pigs. Not as an EP, but as part of a proper pet pack. But that’s not gonna happen, because they’ve already added a lot of animals, they just made them boring or non interactable. A base game update would be needed, but that’s even less likely.
all for the low price of 39.99
Also with the amount of complaining people do, EA would make them the most annoying and irritating they can be just like with infants lol.
In the sims 3 pets there were so many obstacles with different difficulty levels and salt for the horses to lick. It’s ridiculous how little content there is in this pack
I'm getting Sims 3 Pets. I've been sold on it.
This pack has less content than a third of an expansion released more than a decade ago. This has gotten out of hand.
It shocking how?

I honestly feel an overall of 6.5 out of 10 is very generous. We can't hate you Satch.
Personally would have deducted another point or two from cas and build-buy.
Yeah I was shocked it was so high
Well, he added the Cas, BB, Gameplay and others grades and divided by 6 (Number of categories).
In my opinion he should have made the gameplay value 50% of the final grade, so It would be something like the following:
9+8+3+9+7=36 (not counting gameplay here)
36/5=7,2x0,5=3,6
3(gameplay grade)x0,5=1,5
1,5+3,6=5,1 (final grade)
Build-buy deserves 1 at most for having good graphics, nothing else is good about it. We already have every single one of those items
@@anika.taylor_ Still not an excuse to keep making the same items
Not even a tshirt with a horse on it....
I don’t get that either. Horses are so popular with kids. Where’s the horse girl stuff?!
Wait for it ..
We are going to get a kit related to this
There's a doll house that looks like a barn, but we've already got so many of those 😓
Hobby horse toys would have been SO fun. We could have had Hobby Horse Competitions. :(
In Sims 3 horse competitions, while it's also a rabbit hole, you are shown a live scoreboard, where you can see how you're doing and change your technique accordingly. I think there are three options, something like "ride carefully", "take risks" and "go all out". I don't know why they didn't do the same thing in Sims 4, especially since they did replicate everything else.
I remember that, I was always choosing "go for broke" 😅
This is the comment I was looking for. Being involved, even just a little bit, and at least being able to see how your horse was doing, definitely made it a better experience in Sims 3.
Embodies the fact of sims 4: graphics got better, gameplay got worse, and prices went up
Right. Curiously they did for that cave but not for the horses. I wonder if they didnt had time to finish.
Exactly they copied Sims 3 horse stuff and left out parts of it.
It feels like it should have been part of cottage living! Cottage Living: my first ranch.
Nahhh
I'd say more accurately Cats and Dogs but yeah
@@stuffwithsoph8264I mean Cottage Living should have been a part of cats and dogs too
Then we would only have one world, less lots, less interactions and less quality.
Cars will be the same which is why I laugh at the people demanding them.
@@RedRoseSeptember22 Exactly. I don't get why people want cars. I'm perfectly okay with the cars from debug.
Agree
oh, so some of the people get their parents to pay? i feel so sad.. hope they'll not waste the parents hard-earned money too much, working is not that fun..
The cas was better than I expected. There's a lot of really nice 'worn wood' stuff that's sort of halfway between werewolves and cottage living.
I'm very happy to see someone not straight up accept the " horses were hard to animate " excuse 😭

Should also add all the horses animations just carried over from sims 3 which is even more of a kick in the face
Red dead redemption 2 is just hysterically laughing at the EA's excuse "horses are hard to animate"
Omg ponies!!! You’re right!! Such a good comment

Omg yes ponies would have made do much sense!

I was a bit disappointed with the build/buy. I felt it lacked a lot of stuff for actual stables/horse care like more saddle/bridle racks, grooming kits, etc. Also, I'm really disappointed we can't make a jumping course like in the Sims 3.

I have a dog and a horse in my household and there is NO INTERACTION between those two. I am honestly beyond disappointed
Sadly
My theory is that the sims team are expecting lots of new horse lover players to come to the sims 4 for this pack to play as a horse game, so they felt okay recycling the same sorts of ideas for items etc as their target audience don’t have the other packs. Maybe that’s why they felt comfortable having this pack release so soon after growing together - because they were going after two different audiences (long term players vs new players)
this pack is also for wildwest theme fanatics
My First Unicorn Kit lmao
Yea, unicorns are the selling point for me😅 no unicorn? Im not buying😅
I actually would not be shocked if Unicorns reintroduced stuff packs. Disappointed but not shocked
AND it would require you to buy the Horse Ranch DLC
I really think cottage living and horse ranch should have been one expansion pack. But the horse interactions/ animations are adorable!
why merge if you can sell 2х both separately! this is marketing tips of EA
The races might have been a rabbit hole in TS3, but you still had to manage your horse's performance. Also, that rabbit hole was in a large open world, which it is not in TS4.
yeah exactly. and also you could see the leader board and it had stakes you know.
The ranch hands sometimes standing around creepily on your property long after they were supposed to go home is realistic and not a bug.
Sims and cross pack compatability lol 😂
And also- a minor thing maybe but bigger lots? i don't know what I'm supposed to fit a horse in a 20x20 lot or even the slightly bigger ones LOL
And they couldn't include ranches BECAUSE of poor coding? since they've been lamenting this issue for YEARS now, how come they didn't fix it yet? As many things in the game sadly/ But one would think the code would be core fundamental in a game so big. Apparently not.
"we couldn't add new lot types because of coding issues" is so BS because modders make custom lot types all the time
I saw what you did there at 2:11 you cheeky bastard.
No.
Roared laughing at what you wrote on the horse... great review and honesty - thanks!
Omg someone else saw it 😆 I thought I was the only one and I was laughing super hard.
I thought that was a feature, that some horses like to sleep in the stables and some don’t. That might be why it’s so inconsistent.
@@Lokidotter That's interesting to know. Perhaps it should have been pointed out in some way.
did the horse have the free spirit trait? mine did, and im wondering if that has to do with it.

If all the horse competitions are rabbit holes, that is just more proof this should’ve been a game pack bordering on stuff pack.
@mortal-enemy things escalated quite fast going from an alcoholic to a Coke addiction
*Edit*
After playing the pack for a day I’m actually angry about this pack, it was suppose to be a cowboy pack and brought more cas to play as an indigenous tribe.
One thing they did right this time, sims go INSIDE THE CENTER and don't just disappear next to it!

@@Lex-gl3umWho is the "they" and what "limited resources" are you referring to?

So much missed opportunity like Jame said cabinets swatches missed some reall nice smooth textures like the other furniture has.

Hay even smithy like to craft horse shoes, we get a another Bush should.have benn a pile of hay.
@athomewithnessa4185 totally agree I don't think it's worth the price and If I get it certainly getting it one day half price lol 😆
I Appreciate a different perspective from just being excited for this pack. Thank you

My FAVOURITE Sims 4 reviewer. I just feel like you’re giving voice to everything I feel about the content!
Honestly when I played this game my first reaction was just: this should've been in cottage living or cats and dogs
Relating to adding in a new job for this expansion pack, a horse trainer or animal
groomer could have been a cool/interesting part time or full time job feature that they missed out on completely. I remember in the sims 3 pets pack you had to clean the horse stalls, but also their hooves and brush them constantly to keep their mood up! would have been a great re-addition
Bro's laugh always catches me off guard. But for real he be laughing at the most random things and it's always loud, sudden and cut off
I haven’t played with horses yet because I was more interested in the nectar making and I will say that aspect of gameplay is pretty fun, with the ability to create an ambrosia-esque nectar, tieing nicely with gardening !!
Also it’s a BIG moneymaker
Make a vineyard !!
I'm sorry but the this pack is a complete disgrace. I have enough of this sh**. There ain't no way I'm buying something as shallow as this with my hard earned money. Thank you for the Review
"It just feels like a massively missed opportunity" is pretty much a description of the Sims 4 as a brand.
I know it’s meant to be a western theme but I wish that we had some general horse riding outfits for families who have horses not in the western themed world
It's probably going to be one of the next kits - Alternate riding outfits

A lot of people make it seem like Satch is unfair/mean in his reveiws but honestly his reviews are pretty fair and just really honest. He points out the bad things but he also points out the good things too!
We're dealing with a bad case of My First Cottage Living Stuff pack here...
Also I hate hate HATE mini goats and sheep. Reasons:
You could always "set sail" for a bit until this pack is for sale. Personally, that's what I'm doing.
Your so right, any other game and horses are just an expected add on, the developers at the sims 4 must be so weak it's a whole expansion packs worth of work for then to code them, but thats not our problem...
I actually like the clothes a lot, I deeply dislike dressing my sims as insta models😵💫😵💫 I want them to have a story and look natural
There is a lot between this and insta baddie fashion..
@@michalovesanimeI think what he meant is that most people dress their Sims like Kardashians.
Uh...
i feel like sims would be a lot more enjoyable if they combined packs rather than released everything separately. this could've easily been part of cottage living and packs like growing together and parenthood would have also been a good as one. my problem is there are never enough features in what they release. some of the things are objectively good but it's not worth buying multiple packs for things that could've been together in the first place
A "roll in the hay" would have been a great new woohoo location.
The horses are great sure, but this is not a big pack by any means 💀
I dont care about it taking long to animate.
I look forward to someone like Carl doing a full gameplay mod for this and really expanding it. Not that he should have to, but I know he will
I agree with your thoughts on this pack.
