    I think this is my favourite video of yours .
    I can tell you really put the time in with this species, like i do with ruginodus . They are an amazing type of ant .
    I have never been stung by the ants i keep but have been when sitting on a nest in the wild so normally legs and thighs ,i would say its worse than nettles but it was a long time ago.I would agree pet mymrica probably dont even try .

      It's like they know to not bite the hand that feeds. I've been upto my armpits in rubras and never been stung or bitten, lasius Niger however are aggressive little nippers, same with formica rufa. Deffinetly much more aggressive than sweet little rubras.

    Do you scald food insects with boiling water for some seconds to kill potential mites on it? I have a colony around 200 workers and I do so. Im a little bit afraid and paranoid. Do you have natural cleaners like springtails? Where do you keep such big nests in winter time?
    Your video is the best on yt about Myrmica rubra! Full of information and keeping expierience. I also keep my rubras in pretty wet conditions and they seem to enjoy it. I am still not sure which soil is best for the outworld. Thanks for all the informations!

    Just been back revisiting some of my favourite videos of yours . So when is the first track from "the death pheromone" coming out 😄 ? what do you mean by boiling tubes ? are they just larger test tubes ? These and ruginodis have really surprised me and become my favourite ants they are so active , calm ,easy to keep and big enough to see what's going on they should be more popular as beginner and than lasiius niger in my opinion .

    • @Antymatters
      @Antymatters  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha be a sick band 🤣 yeah boiling tubes are the normal tubes used that aren't super tiny :p

  • @bioinvasion_
    @bioinvasion_ ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I've had a myrmica queen for three weeks in a test tube and she still hasn't laid eggs. Idk if it's because I've stressed her too much (I don't think so, but it could be), because she is infertile (she didn't have wings when I caught her and she doesn't seem to want to escape) or because she doesn't feel secure in her current setup (tube connected to a tupperware). In case it was the last option, I added some sterilised dirt to her outworld. She seems a little bit more confortable but I don't think she has laid eggs and it's been a few days since the addition of substrate. Should I recolate to a more natural set-up so that she can dig? Right now, every time I feed her she gets stressed because of the vibrations, maybe in an open cup with substrate it would be less stressful for her

    • @Antymatters
      @Antymatters  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A small tub may help, the issue with a large setup is the queen's will instinctively keep running till they stumble upon a suitable nest area, in a enclose natural tank they may not find a spot and run till they die. With a small tub it may feel more restricted and help her settle down, also makes it easy to feed still. They are hard to found

  • @manuelh.7254
    @manuelh.7254 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    How many worker do they normally have(if its only one queen)? I heard a range between 200 - 50000 Workers... but thats a hugh difference...

    • @Antymatters
      @Antymatters  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Normally id expect 10k ants per queen with ample resources, food normally ends up being the main population control so more food more workers :)

    I just found this channel, I love ants Canada so thought this would be interesting as well. At this point I love the content but I am having a very hard time understanding the moderator due to the background music. Maybe it is just me, I have old ear drums.

      Not the rubtas normally, some other natives sometimes but the rubra like it humid and colder air is easier to keep high humidity 😅

      @@Antymatters thanks! I watched a couple others and was happy with the improvement. I’ve been obsessing with ants for the last year. It’s nice others share it, all my family and friends think it’s weird/silly. But they don’t understand how amazing they are.
