I love these birds so much, but when they open their mouths to speak, the sound of a devastating car crash comes out of it.

There's much more to these birds than most people give them credit for. They're extremely intelligent and very vigilant birds, they may not sound or look pretty, but there's a lot going on upstairs with these birds.

That doesn't surprise me since one was pretty attentive to me just then when I was talking to them.

Hard disagree on both fronts. I find their “chooks”. Very charming, and I think they’re beautiful.

Beautiful birds, we have them daily in our yard ,we feed them along side many magpies and beautiful 🦜 parrots.
The sound of these amazing birds 🐦, is music to the ears, especially in a small suburban garden, here in Penrith.
    What's not to love ❤

It takes a while for them to trust you. This one now flies into the kitchen to eat raw sugar from a dish. They are nervous of any changes. I have not attempted to handle them, they are best left wild as possible.

POV: You're six years old, you've woken up way too early for no reason, the sky is dimly lighting up over the clouds, and this bird is literally sounding off.

I am currently helping my sister move to Melbourne from Queensland & in her new house, there is a fruit and veg patch behind the back gate which attracts a lot of local bird life. I had never knowingly heard this bird call before. I thought I had spotted the culprit in the bushes over the back fence but there are so many different birdies, it was difficult to identify one. It intrigued me so I had to find out more haha it has such a distinct sound.
I originally thought we had moved in next door to Mr Minit or a bank robber 😂 Cutting keys at all hours!

Gosh! Some of the comments here indicate these birds could become an endangered species! They do sound a bit like a chicken but they are certainly less noisy than sulphur crested cockatoos. Great camera work, thanks :)

How did you record them, i try to watch them rough the window by opening e blinds or sneeking theough the gap, but they allways fly away ? They are cute birds and are honeyeaters

    • @awilywolf

They seem similar to miners, they learn things, habits, environments quite quickly. We had so many that would come to eat from our patio table. No others would do so. Piping shrikes would come up, but were super skittish. Magpies were a bit more confident, would fight with crows for catfood and birdbath occupancy, but red wattle birds really took the line in terms of confidence of proximity to us human residents.

People who can't handle bird sounds such as those of this great bird should move to the city where there's almost no wildlife or use noise cancelling items, already wiped out enough bird and animal habitats for housing in the first place.
