An old Frick mill, upgraded with air powered set works, dogs and kickers, and hydraulic turner. Air compressor, hydraulic pump + edger are all driven off the spindle. The only gas engine involved is the sawdust blower.
The sawyer works without helpers to load + turn logs. His production rate keeps engineers on their toes. Also, the edger soaks up a surprising amount of power.
3 flat belt pulleys are provided, to allow several smaller engines or gas tractors to team up.
This relocated show is in a grove of tall trees, giving great shade.
Beautiful site to work some great engines.
While the site is beautiful, what is not visible is the large amount of site prep that took place.
More site work is planned before next year's show.

The Amish can teach you more about how to get things done than a textbook will.
Work steady, work together, no need to rush. A lot gets done, everybody is in a good mood when it's finished.
This was once the way work was done. This was the way our grandparents built this country. Kids today need to see this and understand that typing on a keyboard is not really work.

He's a really good sawyer on a very fast mill. It helps that he doesn't also have to do the edging, as some small mills do.

Thats the way its done! I've lived it, and seen it my whole life! Im a sawyer, and my Father has been sawing for over 50 years! hes 71 and runs a scrag mill over 40 hours, every week! This is a great sawyer! his saw is running good number one, and he's not "snatching and jerking", This man will work your ass off on the green end, and do it day in, and day out!!!! Without tearing up equipment,,,!!
They have a couple of sawyers, all about this good. It's a pleasure to watch. The mill was upgraded with air dogs and kickers, and chain turner, by JS Machine, who's farm the mill is located on.
@@SteamCrane It sure looks like they done a good job on it. I like the looks of that carriage, and that saw lever, up there where it’s supposed to be! I never knew steam engines had that kind of power! (We always ran Detroits). And that man turning those logs by hand…

When the saw blade is in the cut and we hear 'thunk a thunk a thunk'..is that the steam engine under a load?
Yes.
Most of these engines have a single double acting cylinder.
The 2 ends sound almost the same, but piping and other minor differences mean that you can hear the difference in sound.

Seems like the air supply is not enough for the setworks.
Interesting, next time I'm out there I'll look. Of course they may have upgraded the air compressor since 2018. Each time we go there, there is some improvement. This fall, they added a green laser for lining up the cut. Not sure that sawyer really needed it.

That flipper on the moving carriage needs to be slowed down. It almost throws the loggs off. It's a great idea just needs some fine tuning. Nice vid. I have always heard that the Amish don't like being photographed or vidioed.

Different groups vary. Here, I'm shooting the machinery, and there just happen to be people there, and that's OK.
I still remember the sawmill I worked at it was a frick sawmill it changed 2 air dogs the set works wasn't U still had 2 pull the Rachel every time that mill there is a later 1 U can saw some lumber like that in a day's time U have 2 keep the logs on the deck 4 the sawyer saw them fast they don't last like that OMG 12 23 2O22
Every year, this mill gets improved.
That’s a lot of work to avoid using electricity.
Yep I would do it to save money, and hard work is good for ya.
With the rate he's cutting the engine could virtually run of only offcuts far better than buying electricity and wiring it all up in the woods

Dogs + set works are air, chain turner is hydraulic. Both pumps driven off the spindle shaft.

Great video. But I don't know why people use a circular saw mill. A band saw mill loses so much less in sawdust waste it should make a circular saw mill obsolete
Albert Cyphers, it depends on a couple of things. If you mainly saw one inch, a bandsaw will save you a lot of volume. Now if you saw more squares and pipeline skids and you are really going for production headrigs are the way to go. They can cut much faster unless you are talking big bandsaws which can cut about the same speed. Also, much less blade maintenance on a headrig. It all depends on what you saw.
A head saw is more forgiving if you don’t have a debarker and logs are a little dirty also, and the cost to have or convert a mill to bandsaw is a lot of money and the equipment to take care of them, filers, setters, spare blades, etc. adds up. I understand your thought and it is a good one just please understand where I am coming from. Thank You
If you’re using a steam powered mill the sawdust isn’t waste, it’s fuel for the process. I remember seeing a couple of steam powered sawmills around the early ‘70s, long after most industry had stopped using steam.
They have a clever use for the sawdust.
as others said, it depends. What was mostly being made were timbers 2x and bigger, so not as much waste. But the speed of a circular saw is much greater than a bandsaw could manage, (of a similar size). And remember, these are the Amish. They had the logs, they didn't want electrical motors. Could have run a bandsaw, but a circular saw is simpler.
