Air set mill, air dogs, hydraulic chain log turner.
The Air Compressor and Hydraulic Pump are driven by the steam engine off the saw spindle, along with the edger.
The only sawmill function not driven by steam is the gas engine powered sawdust blower. Many Amish communities permit the use of small gas engines for work like this, but not for transportation. The tractors are normally diesel (no electric spark ignition), and on solid or filled tires.
Note use of the air powered log kickers for turning the log the opposite direction from usual. Saves considerable time compared to going around 270 degrees.
Best examples of the kicker working are at 8:35, 14:35 and 15:10.
A brief look at saw sharpening at the end.

Great video. Thanks for the extra info you posted. But some shots of the power unit and boiler would have been nice.

I have a lot of videos posted showing both ends of the belt at this sawmill over several years. Each video focuses on one end of the belt, and results in requests for the other end. I have several more videos from this show to post.
The power units for this sawmill are a variety of steam traction engines. This high production mill is power hungry, so it is usually powered by one of the biggest available engines, or by 2 or 3 engines all belted up to different pulleys.

Give me a few hours and I could design a sawmill with electric motors, hydraulics e.t.c. But give me 1000 years and I doubt I could I find a way to link a steam system like this.

Nice clean saw mill with Fresh paint.. You can hear the steam engine but you never get to see it .. :-(

I have a bunch of videos of the entire operation, posted over the last several years. More videos of the engines than the sawmill, trying to make up for that here.

What is the diameter of the saw blade?
What is the maximum log diameter this sawmill can cut?

    • @SteamCrane

Rats! I was there today, was going to find out, but forgot. Watched them cut some logs larger than the theoretical capacity of the blade.
