- Cuphead: A videogame known for its jazz and legendary difficulty. Trombone: An instrument known for its jazz and for its sometimes inadequate representation in tv shows. While the case here doesn't seem to egregious, a further inspection seems to unveil some trombone trickery that not even Lazy Town can get behind. I rate this animation a solid 6/10.

Honestly, how it actually sounded was really funny. May not have the same hit as the normal coda, but really does match Mugman's feelings in that moment

Plot twist: the animators did it right purposely for the second sound, but the director(/s) didn't like it and just tell the editors to change the sound

I have never laughed so hard about one of these "how it actually sounds" because honestly that is way better than the actual audio they used.
The second is better anyway i think, its sounds better for the tone of the current situation, thus is funnier

The real version actually sounds better than the one the one they actually went with.
The second one fits perfectly compared to the official one. It works so well. Mostly due to the nature of the disastrous intro sequence and a defeated mug man giving it his all before he passes out and hits the ground.
Pixar’s “Soul” has a perfectly animated trombone solo that blew me away the first time I saw it
the guitar playing in Coco is also perfectly accurate
They really have to dedicate an entire sequence to it in order to get the positions right huh
I mean, it's a movie where music it's one its core elements, so is practically mandatory to get it right.
@@Nico_com_c Don't forget just the height of the insane budgets that Disney puts into its animated movies. When you spend $1.5 Million per minute (Soul's actual budget), you should get these things right.
Also, Disney has used video recordings for musicial sequences back to Snow White, when they actually rotoscoped a dancer for the "Silly Song" sequence. It would shock me if they didn't have one of their musicians play the song to get all the positions right.
They spent weeks filming at Berkeley College to get all of the fingerings and slide positions as accurate as possible
You know most times I don't expect animators to know exactly which positions to play, but what slightly bugs me is how nobody pays attention to how a trombone works. At least have the slide go in when the pitch goes up and out when it goes down! Not Cuphead in particular though, or any show for that matter. This is a jab at the industry.

Honestly its perfect and fitting, assuming that mugman has 0 experience with instruments of anykind and the fact he looks so beat up and is about to pass out, I think this would make a better intro.

I love how you can instantly know a real trombone player from a fake one in TV shows and movies because the fake ones never hold it correctly.
For sure, I started watching Star Trek TNG recently and instantly knew Riker’s actor had played trombone before, where as his holodeck accompanist clearly had never played piano lol

@@Kass686 With Frakes, the only reason the music doesn't match up is because he (usually) had no way of knowing what song was supposed to be playing or how it was to be arranged, because it hadn't been written/arranged yet. Ron Jones was scoring both the early seasons on Next Gen and Duck Tales during the same time period. Both those shows have a ton of unique music. There's a later season episode where you hear When the Saints Come Marching In...and that is not what his slide is doing.

Based on the movements, I actually think that they probably changed the audio track during the production after it was animated. There is no reason for the animator to add those extra slide movements when there is no note change, and that actually complicates the animation and takes longer to do and thus slightly more money to produce.

From my experience, the animator probably put a good bit of work into animating it correctly, and then the director or someone came along and told them to change it to make a stronger pose and make mugman look like he's really straining for that last note. Sometimes accuracy gets lost for the sake of the visual
Exactly! The last note sliding out is a great way of extending his action line and providing more tension to his pose. I think it would just feel wrong and weaker if he played it correctly

Sorry, just speaking from my own experiences as an animator, but plenty of shots get interpreted one way in early passes, and then later feedback can change the look/feel. I could totally see the artist for this shot researching how a trombone plays so they could make it look accurate, and then realize/ be told that it looks a little stiff

Any stuff that’s been changed/ altered was by Netflix wanting something changed (like if a scene felt too adult and had to be re-written before it was animated)

You see Mr. Timo, he is using a lesser known advanced technique on the trombone. By lifting his head and the instrument he is able to raise the pitch of the note while moving down the slide. I could understand mistaking this one for trombone fraud though.

The second one is actually fits the situation a lot better (I mean, Mugman's too worn out from all the insanity going on in the intro to play the right notes) and the fact that the trombone isn't even DESIGNED correctly makes it all the more funnier!

I think it is even worse to see actual live actors “acting” like musicians and they aren’t even holding the instrument correctly. I’m a woodwind player and actors holding the horn with their hands reversed is pretty common, but I see it in brass and even strings occasionally, and it drives me completely nuts. Like you are a Hollywood studio, you have complete orchestras for sound tracks on the movies you make, you can’t give your actors a 30 minute master class to show them how to properly hold their instrument and where their fingers should go? It totally breaks my immersion in any movie or TV show.

we came from pianos being animated incorrectly to trombones being played incorrectly
I haven't even seen this show and the second one really got me. Just conveys that he tried to play something but was just too beaten up to do it.

True that. I also play trombone and every time I watch a movie and there's trombones in it I always have to watch and see if they play it right.
The second one might have been the original considering how it sounded funnier but still meshing with the song in a way, but was probably revised into the final one we see today but didnt redo the animation for the new one.
But I'm no professional so feel free to correct me.

I would prefer the second one to be in the show, to be honest. It just seems more comical, and would make sense because of the state Mugman’s in.
The second is more perfect for the post-intro, Makes it more satisfying and easier to see how Mugman does after exploding a firework he was riding on

I loved that damning closeup of trombone slide’s final position.
Maybe they were just trying to replicate how animation back then also wasn’t always correct when it came to proper instrumental techniques and fingerings and such. Look at bugs bunny’s Concerto for example (when he played the piano).

I work on the animation industry, and the reason behind this is simple: stylyzation, the notes cuphead plays are a familiar trombone/trumpet funny sound used on other cartoons across time(Like merry melodies. the series of cartoon called merry melodies.) the stylization it's just giving cuphead an expression that he comes in playing, sustains a note with his last breath and then falls unconscious due to exhaustion and physical trauma. visuals played a bigger part on the cunstruction of that scene rather than sound design.

Looking at the comment section...is this really something worth getting THAT frustrated about? If the animation is accurate to how the instrument is played, then it's a cool little attention to detail. Why is it made out to be such a big issue when it's missing that

I play trombone at my school and right when i saw the cuphead show 2 months ago and right when I saw mugman's trombone I was like this wain't right (finally someone found it out)
