The thing that I learn from this is if the character presses a few black keys it's probably animated correctly
only when the song is not in c major or a minor lol
If I had to guess, I’d say the animators took piano lessons for, like, 2 weeks, and just assumed the black keys are never used because they never made it that far.

Your Lie in April not only got the piano perfectly right, but also the violin. Which is by far the biggest achievement I’ve ever seen in Animation/Anime

But it is actually the speed, it's 25 FPS, meaning it's 4% faster. The PAL speed pitches it up. Meaning this was on a DVD.

Of course Disney and Pixar are gonna try and get it as accurate as possible.
I remember hearing somewhere that they paid *very* special attention to all the instruments in soul, and I think recorded one of the pianists performances and mapped everything to his keystrokes.

The corpse bride one got me… the lower key transposed version actually sounds better to me than the way it’s actually meant to be played. One sounds a bit more dark and the other has a more uplifted sound, then again I think the song is played in two different keys depending on the point in the movie unless I’m remembering it wrong.
It's because of the format, on DVD it was at 25fps while meant on 25fps
The Corpse Bride clip you took as reference is in PAL speed (25 fps, taken from an old European DVD, perhaps). Movies were sped up for that format and that caused that the audio track was always half a tone over where it should be. I checked against the original speed (24 fps) and it sounds exactly how you play it in the "what they actually played" part.

So that's why movies I watched on DVD as a kid sounded different compared to when they played them on TV channels...!
Awesome. But now I’m darn curious about the classic bugs/tom hungarian rhapsody cartoons.
It made me confused because I know how to play it and recognised that it was correct in the original clip
the fact that soul animated all the music parts right just makes it that much better in my opinion.
I mean, the movie is about music.
Besides, I'm pretty sure they knew that alot of musicians would watch and besides, animating it inaccurately would look pretty awkward and earn them alot of criticism..
Almost any animation that tries to be about music does it's best to it right. You can see the same with Nodame Cantabile and Your Lie in April

Let’s take the time to appreciate that this man went through every single one of these clips, checked which part of the piano it was played in (not to mention that some clips have parts where the place of the hand is not seen properly), then replayed it off by ear. ++Respect
I guess that's why half of them are replayed wrong on purpose!

Even when they don't match the exact notes, the codes do make sense in a lot of these
I definitely don't know what the actual creators of Coraline were thinking, but with how much detail and though that went into that movie, I'd imagine it being so off is playing into the facade like nature of the other world. E.g., everything's sounds amazing but when you really look at it, it's actually completely off.
@@IAmzColbz Yeah come to think of it, maybe the Coraline animation was actually intended to be wrong since everything in the Otherworld is supposed to be a fake.
Well with how crazy the dad was moving I don't think they could've actually done it correctly if the wanted to.
@@mickeybat5816 which is part of the point. The other mother's world is so fake that as long as it sounds great to Coraline, it doesn't have to be realistic. If the other father stepped away from the piano entirely, it's likely that the music would still be playing since it's just a construct of the other mother's vision

Makes sense in the anime though. In story, he couldn't really hear what he was playing, like he was underwater and the notes were blurred. So, by blurring the music, it shows he can't really focus on what he's actually playing.

Im assuming it shouldn’t be that hard to animate the right keys on a piano, but having a show with lower budget than these movies with a usual hundred million dollar budget not being able to pull it off is kind of astonishing.

4:19 Some of the keys are played 4% faster than their original speed. So technically some clips are animated correctly, but due to their slightly faster speed their pitch also got affected
This is more commonly known as the PAL pitch, as most movies play at 25fps here instead of 24

The frame rate has nothing to do with the position of the characters hands not playing the correct keys so this explanation means nothing to what the issue is.

I guess the Corpse Bride’s piano is half key because the piano is in land of the dead. So they wouldn’t bother to tune them correctly and it was broken down.
Also, in same movie, I wonder if the skeleton played correct piano in “Die, die we all pass away” song.
“Your lie in April” did both Piano and Violin’s animation right. I watched 2set Violins commented on the Violin part before. That anime really something.
It's less interesting than that. It's half a step up because the clip was taken from a PAL copy that accelerated the video track from 24 fps to 25 and the audio along with it.
Would not be out of place ... it's pretty common for old, pretty used pianos even in the real world. If the tuning blocks are too worn out and the strings too stretched to hold a 440Hz tune, you can just tune them a semitone or 2 lower as long they are to be played solo only. (And not by someone having perfect pitch).

It's kinda crazy how for the Ghost Bride, they animated a piano correctly... IN STOP MOTION. That's just so much extra effort for an animation style that is already one of if not the most difficult to do.
It’s arguably easier to animate piano in stop motion and 3D than 2D..as you have the scale there, just move the parts to the right keys 😅 in 2D you have to draw every frame and scale can get wonky

For the Tinkerbell Chopsticks: Tinkerbell steps back on to E and Terrence on to A before they move from D and B to C and C. As well, they move further down/up the scale at the end and you don't. Was I right?

I have played some pianos tuned in different keys, of course. My grandma's piano was tuned half tone lower for years before main restoring in the shop.

A lot of them may be appearing a half key lower due to frame rate and thus playback speed issues in some versions :)

The c minor moonlight sonata is actually all I've ever known, I grew up with a piano that taught you how to play it and moonlight sonata was taught in the c minor key so I thought that's how it always was suppose to be.
Really? I learned the song in its original C sharp minor.
