I just found your channel and now binge watching all your videos, I watch a lot of knife making videos but learning some very helpful things to try out on all of yours. Like you, I have a lot of knives it takes me a year or more to actually get back to and finish haha, but that's what I love about doing it.
I got a puokko-esc blank a while ago and am finally making the handle. I also just got all the stuff I need to make sheaths as well. I am glad to have found this video, bc I was a little lost on some of the "how-to"s. Thanks and great job!
I mounted a 5 foot section of 2x4 and screwed it into my bench so that about a foot sticks out. It works awesome for getting into bags, and and I mount my rivet press to it. Great idea with the handle. I will add that to my toolbox.
This has been a great inspiration. Started to make something like this, earlier today. Realised I'd gone wrong somewhere. Now I know where, and what to do!

glad you like it. Have in mind that this sheath only work for knives with no finger guard and with handle that is thicker in the middle and a bit thinner at the start and at the end. This way it locks inside and can't fall out :)
There is an aspect to traditional sami sheaths that no one seems to mention. I noticed this feature after receiving a Wood Jewel knife as a gift. The knife cannot be drawn accidentally from the sheath by snagging or grabbed with one hand and drawn by someone else. If the sheath isn’t held while drawing the knife, pressure is put on the belt loop ,tightening it around the handle in the sheath. This is a brilliant design concept that is being overlooked or simply unnoticed. I’ve taken a misstep and tumbled down a wooded hillside and ended up with an empty sheath before. That is dangerous and I got lucky. That can’t happen with a sami sheath. The knife doesn’t come out without the proper permission and procedure.(if the loop is made right). Big fan. Awesome puuko.👍
Thank you for the nice comment , Just checked this and it is true :) And there are so many people criticizing this sheath and saying that it will be very hard to pull the knife out and you can't deploy your knife fast. I tried to explain to some of them that this is not some tactical instant deployment combat knife and it does it's job just fine :)
@@RustLegion Folks overly concerned about” tactical deployment “ should look into buying a bayonet or a different style sheath. And ,perhaps should stop watching so many silly “tactical” movies and listening to “tactical “ salespeople. In over sixty years of woods walking , I’ve never had to “tactically “ deploy my knife. My greater concern is not losing my best tool.
Thanks , It's the same leather as the sheath - 2 mm thick vegetable tanned cow leather. When I paint it with the fiebing's pro dye it stays relatively soft after it dries . If I paint it with alcohol dye it becomes too hard and cracks when I bend it .
yes , that was one of my first leatherworking tools that I made :) serves me well to this day. I only use it to mark the equal distance between each hole but still very important for even looking seam :)

@@RustLegion I sew mine while wet. I use a leather awl and make each hole as I sew. I also make the belt loop a couple of different ways, by leaving a high spot near the top of the sheath and making a small hole in it. I then either use a metal ring to attach or a piece of leather throught the hole and twist like you did. I make my knot a bit different as well..
@@jimsheely5491 I usually make the belt loop the way you said (with hole and metal ring) but this time I decided to try with the twisted leather band. I also sometimes use awl for the holes but never tried to do it on the wet leather. I'll give it a try ;)
Love the belt loop and the two-toned sheath color! The tip, I noticed, is a lighter brown - weathered looking. How did you do that? It's awesome. Thanks for the video!
Thank you Patrick :) I just used 2 different tones of paint - golden brown and chocolate brown. You can see when I paint it , I first leave the middle unpainted. The colors look the same when they are wet , but when it dries out the difference appears :)
@@RustLegion thanks - I didn't spot that. NEXT question: when you use that great pricking tool, do you do the other side as well? Or maybe you have the locations pricked, and just the horizontal line marked. Thanks again! It's rough being a beginner.
@@patrickfreeman8816 Yes I do it on both sides and I try to make them exactly at the same distance so they will match when I start to sew. Also when I mark all the holes I count them on both sides and don't start drilling before I'm sure that they are the same amount on both sides (for example 41 holes on left 41 holes on right)

Very nicely done! The grandfather of a work colleague made me a leather sheath for my knife when I lived in Thunder Bay, Ontario (LOTS of Finns live there!) because the knife came with a plastic sheath and Grandfather did NOT approve! It has a little "fishtail" flap at the tip - is that just decoration or is there a reason for it? I never thought to ask at the time.

One is just a bit more leather on the tip and it's for decoration and another type that the whole sheath profile is like a fish tail and I think this one is for easier draw of the knife when you wear thick gloves.

My Puukko sheath came with as open 'flare' at the bottom. I assume it is for decoration as well as drainage. As you used a sealed wooden insert, is that why the bottom is closed? This vid has given me with inspiration. Thanks!
Glad to hear it inspired you :) . I didn't make drain hole in the sheath because it's carbon steel and if it's put in wet it will rust with or without drain hole .

Thanks , It's the same leather as the sheath - 2 mm thick vegetable tanned cow leather. When I paint it with the fiebing's pro dye it stays relatively soft after it dries . If I paint it with alcohol dye it becomes too hard and cracks when I bend it .

Maybe it absorbs any water that drips from the drain hole drilled in the bottom tip on many wooden sheaths. ?

Thank you , It's pine wood but I also use basswood. It's soft, light and easy to work .
Very nice work! I'd love to see how you show how secure the not is. My novice-eyes see it as weak.
it is pretty strong , you can cut a strip of leather and test it yourself.
