Making a Puukko

  • One of my most popular knives is the Scandanavian style Puukko. My design is contemporary rather than traditional. I use 75CR1 steel that I have laser cut from 4mm sheets. Each blade is fully hardened and tempered individually, before grinding. The finish on this blade is a fire scale finish with an A30 bevel finish. I don't polish the bevels because the method of sharpening these blades will quickly undo any efforts at a satin finish.
    The handle is from Camphor burl with a stabilised maple burl spacer. I use a poly fibre board and brass shim stock for spacers. The guard is hydro cut from brass to save time and wasteage. When the handle is done at a 1200 finish (Old 600 belt) I soak the wood in boiled linseed oil over night. After that you can use any number of wood sealers to finish it.
    This model sells for US$285 from me or from Blade Gallery. Comes with a swinger sheath which I will make in another video. Material also varies from blade to blade.
    THIS KNIFE IS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE AT BLADEGALLERY.COM

    It is always a joy to watch someone who knows what he'd doing at work. To me personally, sharpening the edge would be the ast step, i don't like handling a razor sharp edge when grinding the grip. But one can easy see, you are much more skillful than me with handling your tools.

    takes me 3 days at about 5 hours each to file, sand, and sharpen a knife. Your work is amazing. I have a 1 inch by 30 inch belt sander. Maybe i should upgrade to something like you have in this video. Then again, i don't make a whole lot of knives. I do all my work from my wheelchair. I need to meet and watch someone like you in person. Great work bro.

    Convex man belly works great for grinding a good edge 😁 I speak from experience .
    Dude you have a serious stock of premium wood .... I just look for odd woods locally or in my back yard LOL. I love wild plum tree wood but its the most difficult stuff to get a good square from.
    I love the purple and yellow blend makes such a pretty handle but man its a lot of work . I live in a 4plex so I have my Buck Tools 4×36 sander and other small tools to work with .....Your shop and wood stash is awesome bro , beautiful work.

    Very nice puukko. Seen a lot of those in my neighboring country Finland. Often they use tree bark in the handle. Maybe you should try it sometime just to get a different feel and look to it. Really liked your videos and subscribed. 👍👍👍

    • @VonArmagedda
      @VonArmagedda 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Using birch bark as a handle is extremely traditional way to make the handle

    • @trumpjongun8831
      @trumpjongun8831 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Couple days ago i found traditional Tommi puukko from a forest when we were picking lingonberries.
      I just had to grind the rusts off the blade, clean the sheath and make a new handle.
      It was my first time to use birchbark as a handle material and it feels a lot better in a hand than wood.
      More soft and grippy.
      I prefer traditional rat tail tangs on puukko style knifes which go through the handle and is locked to brass plate.
      Looks better and is more durable.

    • @StuartSmithHandForgedKNives

      lower the grit the lower the speed. around 200 rpm slower with finer belts. I find it prevents the belt grinding too much and leaving deep marks.
