You know Luke, this made me think of something....
So currently, I am in a master program for psychology. As students/prospective counselors, silence is something we often address as an important tool rather than an obstacle. Through our reflections after practice sessions, we notice how many of us have this innate desire to fill the silence between questions; we often jump straight into the content or solving the problem for clients instead of giving time/space to explore the feeling or emotion in their story. It's uncomfortable at first and might feel unnatural but eventually, those little moments without our input can allow for incredible moments of client insight or vulnerability. I can attest to the wisdom in the phrase "sometimes less is more."
This is where Ghost of Tsushima comes in. Instead of filling every single little moment with blaring stimulants to keep players obsessively engaged, they both made definitive space for silence and gently encouraged their players to pause for a moment. As you addressed, the minimalist hud and unintrusive wind "waypoint" are great examples of this mindset. Oh and one other moment, there are times when players have to climb these large mountains or heights. Upon reaching the top and if the player walks to the edge, the camera will instinctively pan back and up to give a wider view of the panorama! Notice how it's not a cutscene and you just quickly turn around going on your merry way. It's like the game is exploring the scenery itself and gently telling you "Whoaaaa....look."
Always appreciate your insight and work. Your own reflections/videos give me space to reflect as well. Love the content.

TL;DR: Ghost of Tsushima is an incredible game that I see myself playing over and over for a long time.
When this game was announced, I wasn't too keen on playing it. I've never been attracted to Japanese armors and fighting and storytelling as much as I was to European knights and tales. The closer it got to the release date, the more I heard about it and the more I was interested, but I didn't have a PS4 to play it on, so I gave up on it and left it there. Christmas came around and my wonderful girlfriend surprised me with the game to play on her system, and for the next couple days I couldn't put it down. GoT pulls me in and entertains me in such a way like no other game has before. The combat is addicting, the armors and cosmetics are gorgeous and scratch that samurai/ninja fantasy itch perfectly. It's a game that I am so glad to have experienced and I will play it for years down the road.

Ghost of Tsushima is the game I think of when I needed a distraction from my old, shitty job. I remember getting so lost in the world and feeling so motivated to get through the work day just to come home and play it. Every mission felt like it was expanding the world and every character felt like they were there to affect Jin and allow us to understand his character development without it having to be explicitly told to us. This exact thing happened to me with Ghost of Tsushima, bounced off of it when it first came out, but absolutely loved it when it came to PS5 and basically 100%-ed it over a couple months. I think a big part for me was switching to lethal difficulty with no HUD and using the ability to save charms to specific outfits, which forced me to engage with the game's different playstyles/systems and facilitated that experimentation respectively.

Despite being someone who loved TLOU2 (having very little issue with stories that don't go my way), Ghost of Tsushima was still my GOTY purely because it was a more enjoyable experience overall. Very well designed. I loved the minimalism in the UI and the organic methods of guidance. Combat was good and presented just enough challenge. Story was very simple but compelling. World and art direction was fantastic - anywhere you stop could be a painting. Also, barely any bloat and not an overwhelming amount of collectibles. Excellent game.

It took me THREE different tries to get into three Witcher 3. I heard it was great, and I already bought it years ago, but after the tutorial map, I could never sit down and experience it. Each time I got just a little further, but could never see the appeal. It wasn't until the Netflix series was out that a gave it another shot. On the One X, it came with a performance mode, and I couldn't put it down. Something about seeing the environments in smooth 60fps made me instantly immersed. I dived into everything I could, to the point where I didn't want to touch anything else. So i get it when you give something another chance with higher fidelity. So when that bloodborne PC port finally comes out, I look forward to jumping in for the first time.
    Either way great vid

After the complete edition came out i tried out the game again and now its one of my favorite games of all time lol.

yeah i got burned out on video games a long time ago. Then for whatever reason I played Resident Evil 4 Remake last year, and it was like being a kid again. I had forgotten how much fun games can be. Loved that game. After finishing it, I failed to find anything else that was fun. I bought a lot of AAA games, none of them did it for me, until Ghost of Tsushima Directors Cut. I actually like this game even more than RE4R. Same thing as the narrator I played this game until way too late at night, only going to sleep because I have work in the morning, and played it as soon as I grabbed free time after coming home. It was just fun, for many, many days on end.

One of the best games I've ever played.
Got it two months ago, finished it twice, and I'm clearly not done replaying it.
The combat alone blows most entire open world games out of the water, to say nothing of the amazing story, atmosphere, soundtrack, etc.
Played it directly on PS5, though, so never had to deal with the low framerate version.

I don't believe in needing better performance to appreciate a game but I agree that playing a game at a different time in the year or in your life can drastically change your perception and appreciation of a game. The other way around could work too. My example is TLOU when the game came out I was in a bad place and the game tone gave me anxiety playing it and I hated it. YEARS later I replayed it coming in with a different perception of life and so on the game and loved it.

Nah it happens, especially when a game receives a remaster or framerate boost. Ghost is my favorite game of all time now. That title was previously held by Zelda: Ocarina of Time. If I strip away the nostalgia, Ghost easily takes that title. I put way too many hours(over 500, Legends included) into Ghost and have finally moved on. I'm enjoying AC Valhalla and Odyssey right now. It's doing a decent job of filling my Ghost of Tsushima void. But man, because of Ghost, the AC games' downfalls are on full display, particularly the responsiveness of combat. Ghost just nailed the feel of melee combat. Love it!

I took a break from the game, played it again later, learnt how to defeat the boss and I was hooked on the game after that. I then finished the game. Sometimes a game doesn't connect with you the first time you play it I guess😂

I personally prefer playing games not more than 2 hours so i can focus more on the story and enjoy the game at a slower pace. But for GOT is was so linear and attractive to just roaming around and discover that couldn't stop. i was literally saying to myself please stop and Tomorrow continue to play the game. GOT is the only game on PS4 that i couldn't stop. That feeling you had, i have it for days gone, at first i wasn't into it, then I feel connected as soon as deacon hit the road and was so desperate to look for his wife. GOT, days gone and death stranding. i love those lone ranger characters.

It's a good game imo but not great. A higher end 7/10. Most side quests were a chore and the main story was good. The physics often looked bad. Beautiful world tho lacking in fun and innovative things to do. Basically, it suffers from the exact same things that other open world games do.

Overall though I'm glad a studio challenge to bring in an open world Samurai game with a historical context and solid characters. We can all agree had this been Ubisoft this game wouldn't great as it was and have many bug issues. :D

@Pedro Viana I don't know, look I think it's a great game but I honestly think as someone who has put a ton of hours on Witcher 3 it really has put me into higher standards but I wouldn't say Ghost is a Ubisoft open world game. Like it's def 3x better then any current AC game. I tried both Japanese Dialogue and English Dialogue and it actually sounds better in Japanese Dialogue. I accepted you can't play Ghost 100% Stealth. The game is catered to stealth and combat gamers who want to play it in a Samuraii run through

In the end I feel I've invested my time properly. While playing it I have been in awe. I have been infuriated. Somteimes it felt I was bored but looking back I see what a complex experience that game was 👍

Glad to see this game finally connected with you. I remember you calling it “a half-assed Assassin’s Creed” (I think that was on Press Start) and I just couldn’t wrap my head around it considering how much I enjoyed this game.
I can relate to enjoying this game more at a higher fidelity, though. I originally played it on a base PS4 and was disappointed in some respects regarding its frame rate and audio issues with that version. But when playing it on PS5 when it was patched to allow for 60FPS on the “Quality” mode (before the Director’s Cut) it played like a dream and greatly enhanced my enjoyment with the game. Now with the Director’s Cut that enjoyment has only been enhanced even further. And when you throw the Legends MP mode into the mix, it’s been a blast of a game that I keep finding myself being drawn back to nearly 1.5 years after its release.

i liked the game, but it was hard finishing this. And that seems to be the case for many. On a personnel level, i think i felt let down by the exploration. It was heavily implied before it came out that this was gonna be a game where exploration is central to the experience but the more i would do it, the less involved i became in the game. there was simply not enough surprises or rewards for doing so and ultimately i got very bored with it all half way to the end. focusing on the story alone, i finally managed to finish it.
