For anyone who did not understand, the Jormungandr we saw when he fought with Thor was freshly baked from the oven, our Jormungandr from GoW 2018 is sleeping somewhere in Migard and retired peacefully since he was already done with getting slapped by Thor's hammer.
@@amri007able so basically Atreus just revived a random snake, that snake became a giant and then fought thor, snake dissapeared and appeared on midgard, then meets young Atreus?
So from what I got, The Jormungandr we met in the first game was the young one set back in time. We know this because he finds Atrues familiar as well as biting Thors statute off. He knows Atrues because he idk “resurrected” him as a “baby” and he slithered away which, we don't know how, showed up in asgard and thus sent back in time because of Thor. When freya says “there's still signs oh him” the original Jormungandr, which we met in the first game, is currently chilling in Midgard. Because his younger self which was ressurected is fighting in asgard This technically means at one point there was two Jörmungandr in the same time period. Which means he doesn't live in a time loop just different versions ig
So from jormungandr's perspective: 1. Atreus and Angrboda "resurect" him 2. He fights Thor and gets back in time 3. He meets us in God of war 4 So now he is still alive.
Bingo. The easiest way to understand this is from Jormungandr’s perspective. 1. Resurrected by Atreus/Loki and Angrboda in Jotunheim 2. Fights Thor during Ragnarok, gets sent back in time to Midgard 3. Gets awakened by Kratos and a young Atreus. 4. Atreus comes looking for advice, which then sends him to Ironwood. 5. Cycle repeats/complete, depending how people want to look at it.
@@prairiefarmer5994 Yup. People think Jormungandr is stuck in a time loop but no, the young one is sent back in time and "becomes" the old one, the old one didn't fight Thor a second time because his "young" self, who at some point existed at the same time as the "old" one, is the one who fought Thor. It's very difficult to understand but one of the best ways to put it would be: jormungandr "watches" his "young" self fight thor and getting sent back in time, but in fact does not intervene in his own "past"/ relative "present".
@@alu9140 yes. My assumption would be young Jotmungandr came with Angrboda and Fenrir from Jotunheim. Old Jormungandr never leaves Midgard, so if its an instance of him on Midgard, its after Thor punched him back in time.
To all people thinking jormungandr is in a infinite time loop, it's not, the one send back in time is a younger version of him, the same "little" snake that atreus and angrboda brought back to life
@@reynaldoalonso5887 Yeah Mimir said that the serpent didn't follow them when kratos used the horn. Also if you look close the jordmungandr that was fighting in the ragnarok didn't have his "beard" (that green thing looking like algae).
Thor and Kratos are both Killing Machines, Monsters and they just fought in Front of Odins house. Even in the fight against Baldur there were earthquakes and more destruction. In this point they were just lazy with the work. I wished they would atleast destroy a mountain or smt like that. Also the fact that Kratos didnt even look exhausted when he fight Thor just doesnt make sense. One of two disappointing moments in the game...
@@see_ya_chump4307 yeah, I get why they needed to end the fight in front of Odin’s house but they could’ve easily let the fight start in the battlegrounds of ragnarok then they end up there so they can have as much destruction as would’ve made sense
Thor is obviously stronger than Kratos but the game is called God of War. And they can't have their main protagonist dying. There would be no more sequels without Kratos.
It's really clever how they included Loki and Angrboda being the parents of Fenrir, Jörmungandr (and Hel) without actually showing Angrboda, giving birth to them or something... Loki is their "father" but just by inserting the soul into their bodies... It's a shams that they didn't include Sleipnir in this game ( besides in some paintings)
Seeing as how they actually gave a name to the unnamed builder of the walls around Asgard. I think they drastically changed the story since they weren't including Sleipnir. In the actual story Svaðilfari was supposed to be the actual reason the builder was able to finish the walls so quickly. Sleipnir came to be because loki tricked Svaðilfari into running away from the builder, being transformed as a mare luring the stead away. Sleipnir not showing up kind of makes sense because they completely changed the story. The builder didn't actual finish his work because of Loki's tricks and Thor killed him when he found out he was a jotunn. They actually had no idea the builder was a giant. While in God of War they made it explicit and had the giant be able to finish their work out of the sheer fact they are a giant. They could have obviously done something with any random horse but I don't think it would have had as much impact. God of War works because many of the changes still hold relevance to the actual stories. While this is one of the few stories they basically completely rewrote and excluded or added major characters.
Listen I absolutely love this game, however I couldn’t help but feel underwhelmed with ragnorok. I was expecting a grander scaled battle, something that this franchise usually delivers like no other. I wish their was more chaos, like For example, how cool would it have been to fight Thor on jormungandr back and in the backround you can see Asgard’s walls destroyed, odins valkyries fighting freya and Freyr in the sky and countless bifrost enemies dropping in from the sky on to the battlefields. Also That could have made Thor knocking jormungandr back in time Way more epic being that we were closer to the action. This game is still a classic I just wish ragnorok was more chaotic.
I think they handled it the way that doesn't make the game boring while still maintaining the storyline, the chaos you want will require more allies and that will increase the playtime too much and make the game boring, or if they made the allies appear out of nowhere for the sake of chaos then that would be cheap from a story prespective
@@drp7751 I don’t think it would have made the game any longer. Those allies you speak of could have simply came from any of the 8 other realms. They didnt need a back story. Mimir went to hellhiem to recruit yet we see no helhiem soldiers, so why even have him go recruit them if they never show up. Sindri went to recruit dwarves but No dwarves joined the fight, not to mention fenrir absence who had the power of gram, there was so much potential to display the power of these gods and make ragnorok truly epic. I mean in god of war 2018 in the final battle freya controls the corpse of a dead giant the size of a mountain with her magic yet I felt I barley saw her during ragnorok. Same with Thor let me see how drunk with bloodlust he is by placing me close to his fight with jormungandr.
Yeah, I was also underwhelmed. Like I want Jorm and Thor fight a little bit closer, causing landscape damages to the playable area. Just more Mountainous damages would be delightful.
Yeah that was my biggest issue also. The whole invasion felt kind of useless. Most of it seemed like just a distraction for them to fight Thor then Odin. Jörmungandr shows up then just gets sent back in an instant and I wouldnt have had a problem with that if we got to see the action upclose. But it happened off in the background and it only took like 2 seconds. Surtr becoming Ragnarok was kind of pointless. I thought they would have used him to destroy the walls but he basically just stand in the background until after Odin is dead then decideds to destroy Asgard and then we lost Freyas brother. I know in mythology asgard is supposed to get destroyed and freyas brother was supposed to die but with how they did it I honestly dont see how things would have turned any different if Jörmungandr and Surtr just didnt show up at all.
The Jormungandr that Atreus resurrected is the one fighting Thor. Angrobodr even mentioned to Loki how “the snake we brought back to life is growing faster than normal”. My only question is, what’s then gonna happen to the new one sent back? Does that mean Odin, Thor, etc are still alive in the now new serpent time?
Jormy was sent back a long time before 2018. By that time he was verry aged, and probably still lives even after Ragnorok, which means... more Jormy in the future??
From what im reading in the comments, i think that the giant serpent we see in the first game IS the OLDEST, AND THE ONE WE SEE IN RAGNAROK IS THE ONE THAT WAS RESURRECTED
You see both in Ragnarok the one at 5:40 is the one from 2018 to present and the one that shows up at Ragnarok final battle is the one that gets sent back in time fighting Thor the present one at 5:40 never left midgard it's still chillen there.
@@ragnarokpxn5196 so basically you are saying that there are two serpents, one in Midgard from the GOW 2018 and then one Loki is fighting is the one Atreus rescued in Ironwood back in time?
@@saadmir9795 yes the one fighting Thor at ragnarok is the Jormungandr Atreus puts the soul marble in that soulless snake it grows into Jormungandr then fights Thor and gets slung back in time to the 2018 Jormungandr that chills and stays in midgard so for a bit there are 2 Jormungandrs in God of War Ragnarok one in midgard and guessing the one shows up and fights Thor stayed in the Iron wood or jotunheim till it faces Thor and gets slung back in time to be the 2018 midgard Jormungandr which never leaves midgard.
@@disgustang1279probably used to the Marvel Version where Loki was Thor's brother, and I was too. Not sure what would be their relation in actual mythology tho.
This gave me shivers :) I already played till the scene when Atreus revives the snake, but I would never imagine that that's the Jormungander, amazing plot twist
Ok so I guess it kinda works like this? Ragnarock: Young Jormungandr is in Asgard and got sent back in time 2018: Sent back ages ago but became much older Jormungandr and met Loki and recognized him because Loki saved him. Now, what's the most confusing part about this. If this is a paradox, where exactly is the older current Jormungandr at in Ragnarock? I assume the theory of having 2 of the Jormungandr is possible but I am guessing the older one did not want to get involved because it can affect the timeline.
Huh? How did Atreus save him I don't understand was it that uh jormungandr was brought back to life when Atreus used the PokeBall looking thingy on a snake body?
the Older one is still in Midgard during Ragnarok, under the ice. It is a giant snake so the cold was probably not doing it any favours. I think it didn't get involved with Ragnarok becuase it knew how events would play out...I think?
The older and current Jormungandr is still at Midgard. The only thing who got involved in the ragnarok is the Young Jormungandr that Angrboda brought from Jotunheim or known as a Giant Realm.
I was actually really disappointed with their fight. I thought we were about to see a fully fleshed cinematic sequence of them slapping the crap out of eachother - But instead we just see this little lightning cloud buzzing around a big snake that keeps missing him. It's nice as a background but Jörmungandr's presence was sorely missed in this game. Fenrir was one more addition that just felt like another missed opportunity. He just showed up, fought a little, then bounced. It's unfortunate since both of these giant children of Loki are supposed to represent just how powerful the Giants can be.
100% agreed, I thought the entire finale sequence was actually kind of lacklustre in terms of the spectacle we were used to from GOW 2018. Kind of disappointed in how it all ended really.
Yeah... And this ties to my only gripe in the entire game...the Ragnarok sequence was rushed. It could have been better (better final boss fights, fighting Surtr, etc.)
Yeah this game was really good but my main gripes are that Heimdall kill(so tame) and this epic moment of Thor sending a snake back in time somehow is just background dressing. (Not enough Thor period really) Oh and also durlin. So he just set them up and no one cares?
@@OhNoesItsDobby I think they got that all planned, they really know how to shape and continue a story, we saw atreus taking his own path at the end and maining the focus of the giants, we will 100% see alot more in the next game
I have a nearly 20-year old ball python I named Jormungandr (Ormund for short), and every time he surfaced in GoW and Ragnarok, I was fucking pumped. Now I just have to teach him that awesome language Jormungandr uses.
Ok. What I see it is this: the one we saw fighting Thor was the Young one because he has no seaweed on under his chin. So the current one is hibernating on Midgard.
I loved the game, played for 3 weeks straight, but tbh I expected more for the climax, I thought it was too short for the so long waited Ragnarok and doom of Asgard
Same. Not gonna lie, the scene from the night before? Where Atreus comes to sleep with Kratos and he’s so afraid that Kratos had to tell him a bedtime story? That scene had *ME* scared of what was about to happen! And then, when Ragnarök actually begins, it’s like…well that’s disappointing
Thor does not kill anyone with Mjionir's lightning strikes. He sends them back in time and they all decide, "fuck, I'm sitting this out and enjoy life somewhere far away from the Norselands"
@@Nobodysurvivesevenonebit Not really. Once upon a time loki put a giant soul in a snake. That one grows up into the younger version that fights thor at ragnarok. That one gets pushed through time and space backwards. That is the snake that is still in midgard to this day.
This shows one thing, The Greek Gods can change themselves, make them big, more power but Norse Gods may not have that feature but there strength and speed is remarkable. The power of Thor and Baldur proves how strong Aesirs are.
It seems like a failed experiment but the profecy held true, he would know what to do with the souls. Create one big ass snake and entrust the rest to another
I just realized: If Thor has weird time travel powers if he gives it his all, does this mean Faye time traveled too except in the distance future when she fought him? Cause there’s an easter egg in 2018 where that references Carol King’s “You’ve Got A Friend” which is mentioned by Atreus that Faye used to sing that and it’s a song from the modern era.
Well to be fair. Kratos did ask Titans help to fighting the Greece gods. But we all know he just to lazy climbing the Olympus Mount and use Titans as a ride and to show the gods he is a real threat
Did you even play the original games? Kratos didn't do shit by himself. He always had Athena, the titans, Hope and for some time even Olympus. Without that, Kratos would have died against Ares and begone.
Wow. This blew my mind. I love how they pieced everything together so seamlessly. When I saw Atreus give that Snake the ball I didn’t pay it any mind, just thought oh wow he revived it. Now that this video came out and is pieced the way it is, I’m like holy shit that was a very young Jormingandr!!! Just Wow. This game was a damn beautiful experience, just like Red Dead II
Finally someone posted this, I love Jormungand.. sad that he will live in a full loop, destined to fight with Thor and send back in time, again and again.. but Jormungand is stylous
The one that got sent back in time was the one that Atreus gave the soul to. That’s how he knew Atreus already. The one we meet in the first game is that same serpent but fully grown. He’s still in Midgard living happily as ever considering Thor is gone 😂
He was such a big piece of the first game and now he gets a cameo, a 2 dimensional background fight that he loses, and some lore. A lot of things disappointed me about this game, and a few of them were fairly egregious, but the lack of payoff concerning the world serpent really stuck in my craw.
I've read in one comment from other videos it was Kratos's horn when he started ragnarok. That horn was supposed to transcend time and space. Doesn't make sense ik. Maybe because i haven't seen a complete gameplay idk.
Big crow in hel also does fuck all , not sure why we didn't get to use mjolnir too, still don't really know what happened to giants. Green slit in reality doesn't get explained too
Fun fact: In Norse Mythology at the battle of Ragnarok Thor fights Jormungandr one last time and crushes the serpents skull soon after Thor dies due to the toxic breath left behind by jormungandr. Also instead of Thor's daughter becoming the new user of Mjolnir it's Magni and Modi
I don’t know how big younger Jormungandr is compared to the present one in Midgard. Perhaps still somewhat smaller than the older Jormie, but pausing at 1:13, Surtr’s hand looks big enough to even clutch his head or neck! I could be crazy and wrong but who knows if Surtr in that form is that much bigger than the dead giant Thamur, the dead Giants in Jotunheim, and the Titans from Greece?
well giving that each aesir + valkiries are like a single army each and they also control the resurrected best warriors of all realms, no wonder they thought that multiple realm armies was not enough
This is a perfect example of why I wish they should have used the cinematic cutscenes and such like the original games instead of just one constant camera shot. It’d be way more impactful if we could see Thor and Jormy actually fighting up close. Still amazing game nonetheless
Two snakes and all that but damm that hit of thors hammer actually send it back in time like the story mimir said in 2018. Took me by surprise when fighting and then just saw hit* and disappeared
The final battle disappointed me greatly. A Thunder God that sent The World Serpent back in time with a smack of his hammer and we kill him as easy as his sons. Wtf!
@@mrsandhu1215 It was the opposite of epic. Gone are the amazing set pieces God of War is known for, instead the culmination of an entire mythology ended with its 2 major boss fights taking place outside of the same lame cabin. It stunk.
0:24 "there goes the alfheim reinforcements" umm.... the only armies that were present were the elves. Not even the dwarves, muspelheim, and hel armies were present.
The majority of the Ragnarok battle was underwhelming, except for the Thor fight, that was fire. But yeah, this battle should've been more exciting and cinematic. Maybe if they cut back on the Ironwood sequence, they could've pumped some more money into this instead lmao.
I thought seeing Thor and the world serpent duking it out was really cool to see in the distance, especially with the sound design. I get why people were dissapointed, but just be happy we even got a version of this.
*Jormungandr in mythology:* "Prepare for your death, Thor!" *Fenrir in mythology:* "ODIN! YOUR STEPBROTHER'S SON HAS RETURNED, AND I BRING DEATH TO THE ALL FATHER!!!" *Jormungandr in GoW:* "Prepare for your de..." *Gets smacked back in time* *Fenrir in GoW:* 🐶 No hate, but I find funny how "humanising" the Jotun removed the primordial fear they carried in the mythology. I would have loved if Fenrir and Jormungandr had caused a huge amount of destruction in Ragnarok, something even greater than the destruction caused by Faye or Thamur, while fighting Odin and Thor, something to throw everything around into chaos as they battle. Imagine Odin and Fenrir splitting the fabric of reality as they fight, while Jorm and Thor makes EVERYTHING shakes with their strikes and being thrown around (imagine a scene where Jorm is literally flying across Asgard as Thor hit him).
To my knowledge, this is what happened: Atreus and Angrboda put that one giant's soul into some random snake in Jötunheim, then that snake grew up to be the young Jörmungandr we see here, who then got sent back in time and continued growing, then became the bearded one we see on GOW 2018.
It's crazy to think that Thor, the man who can kill Kratos and revive him because he wanted to see more, is struggling against Jörmungander, while Baldur knocked him out with only 3 punches. That's really fucking cool.
what are you talkin bout, Thor hit him a total of 2 times on this video. Each hit was a KO, last one sending him back in time. dont think baldur could do that
So there's 3 Jormungandr? Jormungandr battling Thor in Ragnarok - sent back in time before his birth Jormungandr in Iron Wood - young serpent existing while the battle of Ragnarok is happening and Odin got defeated Jormungandr in Midgard GOW 2018 - just chillin' in Midgard
No. They're all the same Jormungandr. The small snake is given a Jotun soul, creating Jormungandr, who grows abnormally fast as stated by Angarboda. This snake grows fast enough to be the Jormungamdr that fights Thor and is sent back in time to pre GoW 2018. He grows older in the lake for years. There is no time loop and no duplicates.
@@tommasopisapia7464 Nope, 1 snake displaced in time. Same being, different placement in the timeline. Would be a different snake if it was a clone, but it's the literal EXACT same Jormungandr
Seems like the World Serpent is the ungrateful child, not like good boi Fenrir. He likes to ignore Loki, the small one after revived and the old one in the snow. Though he still helps Loki in many, many ways. So technically he's a good boi too
I love how Santa Monica is trying to play with the whole “time loop” “paradox” but there’s a big flaw in the writing. 2018 gow snake was sent back in time after getting defeated by Thor. Atreus grows into a bigger boy in 2022 gow and seeks snake for advice. Snake asks him to go to iron wood. When Atreus is in ironwood, bear in mind snake is still in Midgard alive. But in jotenheim, Atreus revives a baby jormungandr. Now at this point there’s two jormungandr. Doesn’t make any sense
The baby snake grows into the one that Thor fights and is sent back in time to the 2018 game. There isn’t really a flaw that there are 2 at the same time.
@@arthurmorgan1550 you still do not understand, when the baby snake gets sent back my Thor. Atreus and kratos then defeated Odin and Thor is dead and they are growing older. And from my original comment the older serpent is still alive when Atreus revived the dead snake.
The music and Atreus lines arent an accident. They are all related. The fact that the serpant has the soul of a giant makes me wonder why he did what he did in the end.
Could've just said its Jormungander's son or daughter idk lol! When I heard time flows different in the first game I automatically stopped listening because I knew I'd get a headache for trying to make it make sense not making my nose bleed great game though!
It wasn't a full loop. There are the young and old one. But eventually they exist in same timeline. So you can feel sorry for the young one, but the old one still vibing like usual...
For anyone confused if jormungandr is in a time loop I’m pretty sure this is what’s going on, correct me if I’m wrong or missed anything out… After playing ragnarok we know that the jormungandr from god of war 2018 has already seen the events of ragnarok up until the point where Thor hits him so hard he sends him back in time. In god of war ragnarok while playing as Atreus we learn that Atreus created jormungandr by putting the giant soul into the snake hanging in angrbodas grandmothers house. When ragnarok happens at the end of the game we learn that the jormungandr in Midgard is still in Midgard and the younger version is the one battling Thor at Asgard before Thor hits him and sends him back in time. So the jormungandr in Midgard that was not at Asgard fighting Thor will continue forward but the jormungandr that Thor sends back in time will grow to be the jormungandr that stays in Midgard. I wouldn’t say that jormungandr is stuck in a time loop but his creation is a fixed point in time that cannot be changed otherwise the jormungandr from 2018 would not exist in the game and that mimirs quote from god of war 2018 saying “it is said that Thor hits him so hard that he sends him back in time to a time before the beast was even born” is correct.
A lot of people are confused (and so was I even reading through the comments) But this is my Understanding.... Jorm A is a baby in the realm of giants, was saved by Atreus by adding a giant soul and slithers away. Jorm A fights Thor and sent back in time. Jorm A is now chillin in Midguard. Jorm A is awoken by horn in 2018 game, remembering the fight, bits Thor's statue. 2018 game goes on. Jorm A is awoken by Atreus and tells him about Iron-wood. Goes back to sleep. Jorm B is a baby in the realm of giants, was saved by Atreus by adding a giant soul and slithers away. Cycle continues...
This game is amazing. All of the God of War games have been awesome (except for the handheld games. Didnt care for those much, but I remember playing it on PS2 and thinking this game would revolutionize gaming.
No he’s not the old one from the 2018 game is still alive in midgard. The loop ends if it were a never ending loop it would be the same exact snake being sent back in time over and over

If thor is strong enough to hit someone so hard they’re sent back through fucking TIME. The fight between him and kratos should have been bigger
yea agreed the fight between kratos and thor shouldve at least caused a couple shockwaves and craters
Damn imagine if they accidenlty go in the time where kratos beat zeus
Thor is obviously stronger than Kratos but the game is called God of War. And they can't have their main protagonist dying. There would be no more sequels without Kratos.
It's really clever how they included Loki and Angrboda being the parents of Fenrir, Jörmungandr (and Hel) without actually showing Angrboda, giving birth to them or something... @@Sindrijo fr.

@@erob9446 I agree 100% that would have been so cool to experience!
Why is nobody talking about how Surtur hand just went through Jormungandr?
The Jormungandr that Atreus resurrected is the one fighting Thor. Angrobodr even mentioned to Loki how “the snake we brought back to life is growing faster than normal”. My only question is, what’s then gonna happen to the new one sent back? Does that mean Odin, Thor, etc are still alive in the now new serpent time?

Ragnarock: Young Jormungandr is in Asgard and got sent back in time
2018: Sent back ages ago but became much older Jormungandr and met Loki and recognized him because Loki saved him.
Now, what's the most confusing part about this. If this is a paradox, where exactly is the older current Jormungandr at in Ragnarock? I assume the theory of having 2 of the Jormungandr is possible but I am guessing the older one did not want to get involved because it can affect the timeline.

Now you know why the Serpernt said Ironwood, so that Loki can go their an give him the Soul to start his history in the present time.

Jormungandr has a long ass green beard, this one has only few
For anyone confused if jormungandr is in a time loop I’m pretty sure this is what’s going on, correct me if I’m wrong or missed anything out…
After playing ragnarok we know that the jormungandr from god of war 2018 has already seen the events of ragnarok up until the point where Thor hits him so hard he sends him back in time.
Some one is a Doctor Who Watcher , but it 100 is a Time Loop you're technically right he isn't stuck in one but his creation is one.
I love how the entire events of GOW, all depended on Angrboda asking Atreus 'Are you sure?'
Poor jormungandr 🤣🤣
He’s fine he’s just sent back in the time to before GOW 4
Jormungandrs roar is exactly like the troll in the mines of moria from LotR Fellowship of the Ring

If you look deeper you can see a gaint hand right after jormungander dissaper
The older one got beat by Baldur with a few blows cause it was weakened by the battle with Thor
This one is fresh
That older one was there in midgard from past 100 winters,
The serpent didn’t wants to hurt Kratos & Atreus so he doesn’t fight back with Baldur.
This game is amazing. All of the God of War games have been awesome (except for the handheld games. Didnt care for those much, but I remember playing it on PS2 and thinking this game would revolutionize gaming.
Poor Jorm. Forever stuck in a loop
No he’s not the old one from the 2018 game is still alive in midgard. The loop ends if it were a never ending loop it would be the same exact snake being sent back in time over and over
