So this dude went on a demon slaying spree in hell when he was still just a human marine. Then he gets turned into a super powerful demigod warrior and slaughters demons for thousands of years, until the only way they could stop him was by trapping him in a magic coffin. Which he escaped and continued to massacre hoards of demons. Why does anyone try to fuck with him?
Codex says that because he was trapped for alot of years, he was forgotten by most of demons and creatures except oldest ones, plus UAC propaganda that he is not existing at all and fake.
Infinite rage in one body makes it a concentrated rage bomb. Not raw rage. This rage is perfected, violent and terrifying. Not just any old anger, which makes someone clunky and pretty much an easy target.

Two things, as far was we know, we don't actually know what side Novik was on. And second, As King, Novik also acted as commander of the Night Sentinels. Not only was he essentially the Slayer's general, he was responsible for inducting him into the Night Sentinels, saving his life when the Priests believed him to be a creation of the demons, and starting him down the path that would eventually lead to Samur blessing him in the Divinity Machine. There is no Slayer without Novik, and that's why, among other reasons he kneels.
Fun fact: A blurb in the 'sentinel history' part of the codex mentions that not only are there infinite timelines, but that Doomguy is a universal constant. This means that EVERY. SINGLE. MOD. is canon. (Edit- See below) **Within the infinite conscious-matrix of the all-seeing Maykr God-mind, there exists every potentiality - every predictive variable of possible future timeline - each one known to the Maykr collective with omniscient, inextricable clarity.** .......... **Among these infinite possibilities, only one constant appears among them, unchanged by the flowing data of endless variability - that of the prophesied Destroyer - the one who would bring about the destruction of the Maykrs.**
Unless it's a mod that doesn't feature Doomguy, then I don't think it's exactly canon. Rather, it's more like the various level pack and maybe gameplay mods which feature him can definitely be considered canon.

Something I haven’t seen anyone talk about in Doomslayer’s origin: the Slayer screamed when he received his blessing. He never screams in pain, let alone like that. I can’t even begin to fathom how painful the Divinity machine is for those who are put through it if the Doomguy was hurt like that.

Rundown for those who don’t understand. Doom guy (from Doom 1, 2, & 64) rips and tears through demons until he gets to sentinel prime They find him and take him in. They put him to rip and tear more demons and he does more than they expect. King gives him Night Sentinel rank. Almost above the other soldiers. Some people don’t like it, because he’s a stranger. The Makyrs make a deal with hell. The king gets mad at the Makyrs because of association with hell. The king gets his loyal followers and Doom guy to fuck shit up and creates a civil war. Enemy people (who sided with the Makyrs) become the marauders when they die. The Betrayer does his shit. The attack on sentinel prime goes and SP falls. Doom guy goes with the Seraphim and becomes the Doom Slayer (gains more power). Doom Slayer rips and tears demons for a long time. The priests lay a trap, bringing down a building on the Doom Slayer. They put him in a tomb where he “suffers” for a while. Then, the events of Doom 2016 happens. Hayden teleports Doom Slayer away and keeps the sword that he turns on at the end. Hayden creates ARC, a military branch dedicated to be the last line of defense for humanity and to deal with foreign shit that Earth can’t handle. I’ll add more once I get a hold of all the codex

I never undertood this doubt about Doomguy being The Doomslayer... Like in the first gameplay with narration of both directors in the Quakecon 2016 they pretty much said it was the same Doomguy after 64. But pretty much no one remembers ? And not only that in the Codex in Doom (2016) It shows a painting of the Slayer with the OG Armour on.

But here's How It went down; After 64 he stays in hell for some time; Since hell is already at war with Sentinel Prime absorbing it (or trying to) through portals. The Doomguy ends up at the Umbral Plains in SP and then is found by the Sentinels, and after that IS what you see transpire in the cutscene; Then a long time passes, the Unholy Crusade starts and now his already know as the Slayer, him and a batalion of Night Sentinals get's trapped in hell again thanks to the Deaug Priests ( Hell Priests) and the Betrayer. He meets the Wretch who them makes/gives the Slayer the Preator suit, then he's pretty much unstoppable, until the Priests drop a Temple on his nogging and he get's trapped in a sarcophagus... Some more time passes, and Doom 2016 happens. I'll recomend you go and check all the Codex entries in Eternal, there's much that i've kept out that's important, like the fall of Argent Duh'nur, who Samuel Hayden apparently really is; who VEGA truly is, and the Unholy Civil War that happend between the Sentinels. If you don't have the game there's already videos here about all the Codex entries give them a look, it's worth it for the lore alone...

King noviks conversation with doom guy in the temple was longer but they cut half of the conversation and revealed the other half of what king novel said after the slayer beat the icon of sin at the end of the game. Basically king Novik was on the doom slayers side the whole time, the game developers made it look like king Novik wasn't on his side but they had cut what he said to the slayer in the temple and revealed the other half at the end. King Novik is basically the narrator that tells the slayer to rip and tear at the beginning of every game.

For someone like doomguy, who doesn’t normally have feelings, seeing him reflect on his past and shedding light on his story and background was a really nice touch.
In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one stood. He chose the path of perpetual torment. In his ravenous hatred he found no peace. And with boiling blood he scoured the Umbral Plains seeking vengeance against the dark lords who had wronged him. And those that tasted the bite of his sword named him... The Doom Slayer.
So if my theory are correct then the continuity went like this DOOM 1 > DOOM 2 > DOOM 64 > DOOM Eternal (Flashback) > DOOM 2016 > DOOM Eternal (current time) After the event of DOOM 64, Doomguy had been badly injured and exhausted after being stuck in Hell for too long. The Sentinel found him and tossed him into an Arena and watch him fight to death as an entertainment. Surprisingly to them, he ripped and torn even the best soldiers and fiercest beast that they have and the Sentinel got no choice but to recruit him. After serving long enough he then got promoted to Commander rank despite the fact that he's a pure Terran with no Sentinel bloodline, this actually would anger the Marauders and explain the deep hatred rivalry between the two. The Doomguy then got blessed by Seraphim to be a demi-god which in a way pissed off Kahn Makyr. Doomguy would later then led a Sentinel Legion of his own on an Unholy Crusade to Hell. But the Hell Priest betrayed them and trapped them, the whole Legion was annihilated, those that survived were corrupted and turned into Marauders (which would explain multiple Marauders), only Doomguy still standing to Rip and Tear through Hell. He was so brutal and fierce that the demon named him Doom Slayer wrote the Slayer testament, trapped him in a tomb. Decades later, Samuel Hayden found the Slayer and the Crucible. Thus, Doom 2016 happened. 3 years later, Doom Eternal continues the story.

HOLY SHIT So um I've recently replayed through Doom 2016 in anticipation for this game and when Samuel Hayden gives you your first argent cell his exact words are "Take it , it will give you strength...help you on your journey" THE EXACT SAME LINE THE PRIEST SAYS WHEN HE GIVES THE DOOMGUY POWERS , that's why when DOOMGUY goes to urdak or heaven the computer says hello to the priest , AKA Samuel who's currently in the Doomguys network and it explains how he got hold of Vega AKA the father , and his banishing that's mentioned in lore foe doing this is probably how he ended up a human and knew so much like for example to obtain the Doom Slayer incase there is ever another invasion IT ALL FUCKIN MAKES SENSE THE BASTARDS HAD THIS ALL PLANNED FROM THE BEGINNING!

Before Samur empowered him, he struggled. He bled. It was like Die Hard, where Mclane suffers and barely scrapes by with determination. The demons didn't fear him then, despite all the demons he killed, he was almost always close to dying and they knew it. When he became empowered, the dynamic of things shifted dramatically. He became a true monster and god of death. Then the fear came. But they are demons so they still fight.

What i find most curious is that The Seraphim that gave the doomslayer strength uses the same words as Samuel Hayden when you meet him face to face in his office in doom 2016. "I offer you a gift" (which in the 2016 game sam said "Its a gift") "Take it, it will give you strength, help you on your journey". What does it say about Dr. Hayden and The Seraphim? Why when Doomguy enter the Mayker's facilities in the last act does the "AI" says "Welcome, Seraphim". Most curious, indeed
I think you might be onto something, I honestly thought first time going through that when it said "welcome seraphim" it was referring to the Doom Slayer but if Samuel Hayden is the Seraphim or some reincarnation of him. It would explain a lot like how in the story he is apparently familiar with Makyr tech, or how he knew to get to Urdak in the first place.
Now I’m just speculating here. But maybe the “gift” that Seraphim gave him was to make Doomguy at least a little bit of Myker. It’s pretty clear they have some kind of immortality, able to absorb and/or use Argent energy with ease, and are capable of surviving inter-dimensional travel. All of which Doomguy can now do or has. It’s also likely that due to Seraphim’s betrayal, he was cast out of the Mykers and made into a human. This would give rise to Dr. Samuel Hayden. Just speculation, but it makes some sense at least.
I figured it out. Hayden IS that seraphim. This is all i got: Same voice lines, seraphim's voice is samuel's undistorted. Samuel's very appearent vast knowledge (how would he know the portal to sentinel prime would be in Mars? How he KNEW the exact process of producing argent energy, knowing how doom guy is to get inside the Mayker homeworld and that he needed vega to get outside, even though he said NO MORTAL OR SENTINEL EVER WALKED IN URDAK, then how would he know this?) How in the codex entry there was a Seraphim who stole The Father (basically God lol), when later in the game VEGA literally asked him if he is The Father, how the ARC personel told Doomguy that samuel's cortex is literally Alien, how when you brought him back to the ship, VEGA said that Hayden's architecture is very similiar to The Doom Fortress (Which is Mayker made for sentinels), How Hayden knew that in order to kill a Titan he needs the Slayer's Cruicible, and how before the Khan Mayker boss fight he tells you that the Khan Mayker is near him, or that he senses her nearby, how would have that abillity? Also how in the last game he just "randomly" led the UAC into the doomguy's coffin during an expedition to Hell, and also he was seemingly effortlessly integrated Tethers into The Preator suit through a fucking display (Literally alien technology to humans since it is sentinel made). Hayden's history is surely fabricated and his goal was probably to aid human-kind and to stop the demon and angelic threat.
Doom and then Doom Eternal are such amazing games. As a kid who played the original Doom in 1993 I have long believed the evolution of Doom is one of the greatest things in video game history. Doom Eternal is truly a masterpiece.
I was born in 1991and back when the nostalgia hits hard. Doom was the first old school game I've ever experienced. I love how doom games evolved like this, so deep in backstory, lore, and details.
Ok so, here's what I think the timeline is: Doom 1:hell invades a UAC base on Mars. Doomguy makes his first trip to hell and back after killing the spider Mastermind.(the "first age" if you will.) Due to the fact that this is when the "shadows first lengthened." And Doomguy was the only one who could stand. Doom 2:hell got to earth and Doomguy repelled the invasion, this is the end of the first age. Doom 64:The UAC recognizes doomguys exploits and sends him to repel another mars attack, which resulted in doomguy staying in hell, marking the beginning of the second age, doom guy tore through hell, beaten and bruised, he found himself on sentinel prime Doom 3:in the middle of the second age, hell is getting worried about doomguy, and demons start writing about the doomguy, now known to them as the doomslayer, more UAC operatives find writing about doomguy, who found the soul cube. Which resulted in hell invading mars a 4th time, which was repelled by an unnamed Marine. Pre-doom 2016:doomguy is on sentinel prime, it is now the third age. Doomguy has proved himself and has received a blessing from the seraphim. This is when hell sends a Titan to topple the lost city of Taras Nabad. Who was killed by doomguys crucible blade. Some time during the third age, doomguy was sent off onto a mission, either way, a temple was dropped onto the doomguy, who was put into a coma and placed in a cursed sarcophagus. This is when the betrayer sold out his comrades for his son. Resulting in the loss of argent d'nur, after a hundred years or so, Samuel Hayden found the doomguys armor and sarcophagus, soon kicking off the events of Doom 2016.
This is pretty good but a few tweaks. Pre-DOOM 2016 Doom Guy is found by scouts and is brought to Sentinel Prime. Despite being wounded his will impresses the Deag Nilox and Deag Ranak and after he is tested is allowed to join the Argenta's front line fighting force. The Khan Maykr shows interest in his mad ramblings about "demons". Demon's are first sighted invading Argent D'Nur sparking the Unholy Wars. Losses are heavy, but Doom Guy manages to survive every battle wracking up many kills. Impressed by this King Novik allows Doom guy to be inducted into the Night Sentinels and trained in their combat. During the Demon's siege of Taras Nabad Doom guy is taken by a hooded figure to the Divinity Machine, and is granted enhanced abilities. Using this new strength the newly minted Doom Slayer kills the Titan with his Crucible. Eventually the Khan Maykr and Argenta make a bargain with Hell to provide them with an eternal supply of Argent Energy to power their societies. The Doom Slayer, Night Sentinels and other factions are not pleased with this and it begins a Civil war. In an attempt to stop the Maykrs the Night Sentinels and the Doom Slayer enter hell to destroy Nekroval. They are betrayed by the Priests of Deag and are instead trapped in Hell. The betrayer gives up the remaining Night Sentinels and all opposition to the Khan Maykr in Argenta society stops. The Icon of Sin is created. The Slayer rampages through Hell before having a building dropped on him, and that leads to the Slayer being sealed in a Sarcophagus for an undetermined amount of time. The UAC discovers Argent Energy and learns how to refine it into a usable energy source. The UAC begins experimenting with inter-dimensional travel. Samuel Hayden leads an expedition into hell and recovers the Doom Slayer's Sarcophagus, and brings it with him to the Mars Facility. Begin events of DOOM 2016

The event is described in the Codex entry History of the Sentinels - Part IX I may have made an assumption that the city that was besieged was Taras Nabad since that is where they Slayer's Crucible is lodged in the fallen Titan, but I think it makes sense. However it is clearly noted that the Titan was invincible BEFORE the Slayer took up the Crucible.

My theory: DoomGuy spent so much time in Hell after the events of Doom 1,2, & Doom64, that his mind was shattered. In a moment of luck, Hell teleported him to Sentinel Prime where he was turned into an even more powerful badass. Then he was sent back to Hell to lay waste to the demons in Doom 2016. He continued his assault until he was imprisoned in the tomb and unearthed to stop the Mars invasion. In other words: DoomGuy became the DOOMSLAYER.
Events of DOOM I, II, and 64 happen in linear sequence, with Doomguy choosing to remain in hell to ensure that another invasion can never happen. He spends so long there, that he gets corrupted by hell's rage, becoming singlemindedly focused on slaughtering every demon he comes across. Desperate, hell sends him to Sentinel Prime hoping they would kill Doomguy insetead. The Sentinel soon see he is more than just another grunt, the Seraphim gifts him strength and the Praetor suit over his old marine combat attire, and sends him back to hell to continue the crusade, now redubbed the Doom Slayer. Hell freaks out, and lays a trap, finally sealing the Slayer in the sarcophagus we see him in at the start of DOOM 2016. And thus play out the events of New DOOM and DOOM: Eternal. At least, that's my highly stripped down and condensed version of the now 5 game timeline.

I thought the whole thing was after Doom 2’s events where he locks himself in hell after killing the Icon of Sin, it is later discovered that a mother demon is relaunching an assault in a massacred lab so you play as what is effectively Doomguy’s clean up crew. I could be wrong though I’m not super familiar with the jump from 2 to 64, I just know 64 never outright says that you’re Doomguy I don’t think

im not really a fan of his voice and dialogue to be honest. not that i find it cringy, just unecessary. before he was just like jason or michael myers. being silent made him more terrifying. like a force of nature.
I get that, it really changes the way you see the character. But at the same time, I see it as a part of his journey. He is not the same as he was in that moment. After he recovered, he became even more badass and never spoke again. One thing doesn't necessarily destroy the other, they just occur at different times. The Doomguy is so badass and heroic that I'm so fucking happy the Doom 64 is the canon ending/continuation of his story. Even as a kid I thought that the Doom 64 ending was even more badass than the first Doom "Too tough for Hell to contain" ending.

SLIGHT SPOILER Since this is OG Doom Guy. After leaving himself trapped in hell in Doom 64 to stop any further Invasions. Eventually he ended up at the umbrial plains on Sentinel Prime. Night Sentinels found him brought to the priest and was deemed worthy to be a night sentinel or a high ranking general. Yeah hooded figure most likely is the seraphim that had blessed him with immense power (stated in Doom 2016) that basically made him almost god-like. But when exactly his blessing happened I’m not sure.
Soooo basically the character we play as is the Doom Slayer who is formerly known as Doom guy or Doom marine from Doom 1, 2 and 64. After the events of 64 DG decides to stay in hell and fight to keep everyone and finds his way to Sentinel Prime. He is then chosen to fight as a Night Sentinel but ultimately given great power and strength by the Hooded Figure (Red cloak guy) who is a renegade "Seraphim" after witnessing Doom Guys prowess for killing Demons but this lead to the Seraphim being exiled by his fellow Mykers. During the attack on Sentinel Prime, Doom guy took out a Titan which then gave him the new name of "The Doom Slayer". That's a TL:DR version as you're going to get... unless you say Doom Slayer is literally Captain America and the Hooded guy was the Doctor and instead of kill nazi's, he kills Demons.

Not only was he essentially the Slayer's general, he was responsible for inducting him into the Night Sentinels, saving his life when the Priests believed him to be a creation of the demons, and starting him down the path that would eventually lead to Samur blessing him in the Divinity Machine.
There is no Slayer without Novik, and that's why, among other reasons he kneels.

They find him and take him in. They put him to rip and tear more demons and he does more than they expect.
King gives him Night Sentinel rank. Almost above the other soldiers.
Some people don’t like it, because he’s a stranger.
The Makyrs make a deal with hell.
The king gets mad at the Makyrs because of association with hell.
The king gets his loyal followers and Doom guy to fuck shit up and creates a civil war.
Enemy people (who sided with the Makyrs) become the marauders when they die.
The Betrayer does his shit.
The attack on sentinel prime goes and SP falls.
Doom guy goes with the Seraphim and becomes the Doom Slayer (gains more power).
Doom Slayer rips and tears demons for a long time.
The priests lay a trap, bringing down a building on the Doom Slayer. They put him in a tomb where he “suffers” for a while.
Then, the events of Doom 2016 happens.
Hayden teleports Doom Slayer away and keeps the sword that he turns on at the end.
Hayden creates ARC, a military branch dedicated to be the last line of defense for humanity and to deal with foreign shit that Earth can’t handle.

But here's How It went down;
After 64 he stays in hell for some time;
Since hell is already at war with Sentinel Prime absorbing it (or trying to) through portals.
The Doomguy ends up at the Umbral Plains in SP and then is found by the Sentinels, and after that IS what you see transpire in the cutscene;
Then a long time passes, the Unholy Crusade starts and now his already know as the Slayer, him and a batalion of Night Sentinals get's trapped in hell again thanks to the Deaug Priests ( Hell Priests) and the Betrayer.
He meets the Wretch who them makes/gives the Slayer the Preator suit, then he's pretty much unstoppable, until the Priests drop a Temple on his nogging and he get's trapped in a sarcophagus... Some more time passes, and Doom 2016 happens.
I'll recomend you go and check all the Codex entries in Eternal, there's much that i've kept out that's important, like the fall of Argent Duh'nur, who Samuel Hayden apparently really is; who VEGA truly is, and the Unholy Civil War that happend between the Sentinels.
If you don't have the game there's already videos here about all the Codex entries give them a look, it's worth it for the lore alone...

King noviks conversation with doom guy in the temple was longer but they cut half of the conversation and revealed the other half of what king novel said after the slayer beat the icon of sin at the end of the game. Basically king Novik was on the doom slayers side the whole time, the game developers made it look like king Novik wasn't on his side but they had cut what he said to the slayer in the temple and revealed the other half at the end. King Novik is basically the narrator that tells the slayer to rip and tear at the beginning of every game.

So if my theory are correct then the continuity went like this
DOOM 1 > DOOM 2 > DOOM 64 > DOOM Eternal (Flashback) > DOOM 2016 > DOOM Eternal (current time)
After the event of DOOM 64, Doomguy had been badly injured and exhausted after being stuck in Hell for too long. The Sentinel found him and tossed him into an Arena and watch him fight to death as an entertainment. Surprisingly to them, he ripped and torn even the best soldiers and fiercest beast that they have and the Sentinel got no choice but to recruit him. After serving long enough he then got promoted to Commander rank despite the fact that he's a pure Terran with no Sentinel bloodline, this actually would anger the Marauders and explain the deep hatred rivalry between the two. The Doomguy then got blessed by Seraphim to be a demi-god which in a way pissed off Kahn Makyr. Doomguy would later then led a Sentinel Legion of his own on an Unholy Crusade to Hell. But the Hell Priest betrayed them and trapped them, the whole Legion was annihilated, those that survived were corrupted and turned into Marauders (which would explain multiple Marauders), only Doomguy still standing to Rip and Tear through Hell. He was so brutal and fierce that the demon named him Doom Slayer wrote the Slayer testament, trapped him in a tomb. Decades later, Samuel Hayden found the Slayer and the Crucible. Thus, Doom 2016 happened. 3 years later, Doom Eternal continues the story.

So um I've recently replayed through Doom 2016 in anticipation for this game and when Samuel Hayden gives you your first argent cell his exact words are "Take it , it will give you strength...help you on your journey" THE EXACT SAME LINE THE PRIEST SAYS WHEN HE GIVES THE DOOMGUY POWERS , that's why when DOOMGUY goes to urdak or heaven the computer says hello to the priest , AKA Samuel who's currently in the Doomguys network and it explains how he got hold of Vega AKA the father , and his banishing that's mentioned in lore foe doing this is probably how he ended up a human and knew so much like for example to obtain the Doom Slayer incase there is ever another invasion IT ALL FUCKIN MAKES SENSE THE BASTARDS HAD THIS ALL PLANNED FROM THE BEGINNING!

Before Samur empowered him, he struggled. He bled. It was like Die Hard, where Mclane suffers and barely scrapes by with determination. The demons didn't fear him then, despite all the demons he killed, he was almost always close to dying and they knew it.
When he became empowered, the dynamic of things shifted dramatically. He became a true monster and god of death. Then the fear came. But they are demons so they still fight.

I think you might be onto something, I honestly thought first time going through that when it said "welcome seraphim" it was referring to the Doom Slayer but if Samuel Hayden is the Seraphim or some reincarnation of him. It would explain a lot like how in the story he is apparently familiar with Makyr tech, or how he knew to get to Urdak in the first place.
Or like how does Hayden just KNOW the Slayer was gonna find him?
He knows so much about the plot that he really shouldn’t.
Now I’m just speculating here. But maybe the “gift” that Seraphim gave him was to make Doomguy at least a little bit of Myker. It’s pretty clear they have some kind of immortality, able to absorb and/or use Argent energy with ease, and are capable of surviving inter-dimensional travel. All of which Doomguy can now do or has. It’s also likely that due to Seraphim’s betrayal, he was cast out of the Mykers and made into a human. This would give rise to Dr. Samuel Hayden. Just speculation, but it makes some sense at least.

This is all i got: Same voice lines, seraphim's voice is samuel's undistorted.
Samuel's very appearent vast knowledge (how would he know the portal to sentinel prime would be in Mars? How he KNEW the exact process of producing argent energy, knowing how doom guy is to get inside the Mayker homeworld and that he needed vega to get outside, even though he said NO MORTAL OR SENTINEL EVER WALKED IN URDAK, then how would he know this?) How in the codex entry there was a Seraphim who stole The Father (basically God lol), when later in the game VEGA literally asked him if he is The Father, how the ARC personel told Doomguy that samuel's cortex is literally Alien, how when you brought him back to the ship, VEGA said that Hayden's architecture is very similiar to The Doom Fortress (Which is Mayker made for sentinels), How Hayden knew that in order to kill a Titan he needs the Slayer's Cruicible, and how before the Khan Mayker boss fight he tells you that the Khan Mayker is near him, or that he senses her nearby, how would have that abillity? Also how in the last game he just "randomly" led the UAC into the doomguy's coffin during an expedition to Hell, and also he was seemingly effortlessly integrated Tethers into The Preator suit through a fucking display (Literally alien technology to humans since it is sentinel made).
Hayden's history is surely fabricated and his goal was probably to aid human-kind and to stop the demon and angelic threat.

Doom and then Doom Eternal are such amazing games. As a kid who played the original Doom in 1993 I have long believed the evolution of Doom is one of the greatest things in video game history.

I was born in 1991and back when the nostalgia hits hard. Doom was the first old school game I've ever experienced. I love how doom games evolved like this, so deep in backstory, lore, and details.
Ok so, here's what I think the timeline is:
Doom 1:hell invades a UAC base on Mars. Doomguy makes his first trip to hell and back after killing the spider Mastermind.(the "first age" if you will.)
Due to the fact that this is when the "shadows first lengthened."
And Doomguy was the only one who could stand.
Doom 2:hell got to earth and Doomguy repelled the invasion, this is the end of the first age.
Doom 64:The UAC recognizes doomguys exploits and sends him to repel another mars attack, which resulted in doomguy staying in hell, marking the beginning of the second age, doom guy tore through hell, beaten and bruised, he found himself on sentinel prime
Doom 3:in the middle of the second age, hell is getting worried about doomguy, and demons start writing about the doomguy, now known to them as the doomslayer, more UAC operatives find writing about doomguy, who found the soul cube.
Which resulted in hell invading mars a 4th time, which was repelled by an unnamed Marine.
Pre-doom 2016:doomguy is on sentinel prime, it is now the third age. Doomguy has proved himself and has received a blessing from the seraphim. This is when hell sends a Titan to topple the lost city of Taras Nabad. Who was killed by doomguys crucible blade.
Some time during the third age, doomguy was sent off onto a mission, either way, a temple was dropped onto the doomguy, who was put into a coma and placed in a cursed sarcophagus.
This is when the betrayer sold out his comrades for his son.
Resulting in the loss of argent d'nur, after a hundred years or so, Samuel Hayden found the doomguys armor and sarcophagus, soon kicking off the events of Doom 2016.
This is pretty good but a few tweaks.
Pre-DOOM 2016
Doom Guy is found by scouts and is brought to Sentinel Prime. Despite being wounded his will impresses the Deag Nilox and Deag Ranak and after he is tested is allowed to join the Argenta's front line fighting force. The Khan Maykr shows interest in his mad ramblings about "demons".
Demon's are first sighted invading Argent D'Nur sparking the Unholy Wars. Losses are heavy, but Doom Guy manages to survive every battle wracking up many kills. Impressed by this King Novik allows Doom guy to be inducted into the Night Sentinels and trained in their combat.
During the Demon's siege of Taras Nabad Doom guy is taken by a hooded figure to the Divinity Machine, and is granted enhanced abilities. Using this new strength the newly minted Doom Slayer kills the Titan with his Crucible.
Eventually the Khan Maykr and Argenta make a bargain with Hell to provide them with an eternal supply of Argent Energy to power their societies. The Doom Slayer, Night Sentinels and other factions are not pleased with this and it begins a Civil war.
In an attempt to stop the Maykrs the Night Sentinels and the Doom Slayer enter hell to destroy Nekroval. They are betrayed by the Priests of Deag and are instead trapped in Hell.
The betrayer gives up the remaining Night Sentinels and all opposition to the Khan Maykr in Argenta society stops. The Icon of Sin is created.
The Slayer rampages through Hell before having a building dropped on him, and that leads to the Slayer being sealed in a Sarcophagus for an undetermined amount of time.
The UAC discovers Argent Energy and learns how to refine it into a usable energy source.
The UAC begins experimenting with inter-dimensional travel.
Samuel Hayden leads an expedition into hell and recovers the Doom Slayer's Sarcophagus, and brings it with him to the Mars Facility.
Begin events of DOOM 2016

I may have made an assumption that the city that was besieged was Taras Nabad since that is where they Slayer's Crucible is lodged in the fallen Titan, but I think it makes sense. However it is clearly noted that the Titan was invincible BEFORE the Slayer took up the Crucible.

My theory:
DoomGuy spent so much time in Hell after the events of Doom 1,2, & Doom64, that his mind was shattered. In a moment of luck, Hell teleported him to Sentinel Prime where he was turned into an even more powerful badass.
Then he was sent back to Hell to lay waste to the demons in Doom 2016.
He continued his assault until he was imprisoned in the tomb and unearthed to stop the Mars invasion.
In other words:
DoomGuy became the DOOMSLAYER.

Events of DOOM I, II, and 64 happen in linear sequence, with Doomguy choosing to remain in hell to ensure that another invasion can never happen. He spends so long there, that he gets corrupted by hell's rage, becoming singlemindedly focused on slaughtering every demon he comes across. Desperate, hell sends him to Sentinel Prime hoping they would kill Doomguy insetead. The Sentinel soon see he is more than just another grunt, the Seraphim gifts him strength and the Praetor suit over his old marine combat attire, and sends him back to hell to continue the crusade, now redubbed the Doom Slayer. Hell freaks out, and lays a trap, finally sealing the Slayer in the sarcophagus we see him in at the start of DOOM 2016. And thus play out the events of New DOOM and DOOM: Eternal.
At least, that's my highly stripped down and condensed version of the now 5 game timeline.

I thought the whole thing was after Doom 2’s events where he locks himself in hell after killing the Icon of Sin, it is later discovered that a mother demon is relaunching an assault in a massacred lab so you play as what is effectively Doomguy’s clean up crew. I get that, it really changes the way you see the character. But at the same time, I see it as a part of his journey. He is not the same as he was in that moment. After he recovered, he became even more badass and never spoke again. One thing doesn't necessarily destroy the other, they just occur at different times.

I like that this game finally put the stupid theory of Doom Guy/Slayer being the Sentinel who betrayed the others to rest. The Betrayer was always someone else.
He was always the same ol' Doom Guy from Doom 1, 2 and 64... and yet some people said he was not...
Yeah, I never understood that theory. It was obvious even just from the 2016's lore that the betrayer and the slayer were different people.

The Doomguy is so badass and heroic that I'm so fucking happy the Doom 64 is the canon ending/continuation of his story. Even as a kid I thought that the Doom 64 ending was even more badass than the first Doom "Too tough for Hell to contain" ending.

SLIGHT SPOILER Since this is OG Doom Guy. After leaving himself trapped in hell in Doom 64 to stop any further Invasions. Eventually he ended up at the umbrial plains on Sentinel Prime. Night Sentinels found him brought to the priest and was deemed worthy to be a night sentinel or a high ranking general. Yeah hooded figure most likely is the seraphim that had blessed him with immense power (stated in Doom 2016) that basically made him almost god-like. But when exactly his blessing happened I’m not sure.
Soooo basically the character we play as is the Doom Slayer who is formerly known as Doom guy or Doom marine from Doom 1, 2 and 64. After the events of 64 DG decides to stay in hell and fight to keep everyone and finds his way to Sentinel Prime.
He is then chosen to fight as a Night Sentinel but ultimately given great power and strength by the Hooded Figure (Red cloak guy) who is a renegade "Seraphim" after witnessing Doom Guys prowess for killing Demons but this lead to the Seraphim being exiled by his fellow Mykers.
During the attack on Sentinel Prime, Doom guy took out a Titan which then gave him the new name of "The Doom Slayer".
That's a TL:DR version as you're going to get... unless you say Doom Slayer is literally Captain America and the Hooded guy was the Doctor and instead of kill nazi's, he kills Demons.
