And now, the BSP (Central Bank of the Philippines) is asking users to minimize folding by using “longer wallets” or wallets designed to keep bills straight. This might seem like a small limitation, but when you think about the many, many transactions done with physical banknotes throughout a country of 110 million people, this little issue becomes huge.
You missed one historical detail embedded in all notes. The inclusion of “Baybayin” or the pre-colonial ancient writing script of the Philippines. One half of it (horizontally) is shown on each side of all notes. It may look like a random doodle for some.
You can actually read the Baybayin script if you look at the front side of the banknote with light. The bottom half of the Baybayin script is at the front of the banknote, and the top half is at the back. The top half of the Baybayin script, however, is printed in reverse so that you can read it in the front of the banknote. The Baybayin script written in the banknote is translated in Latin alphabet as "Pilipino", which refers to the citizens of the country. The Baybayin script is all the same with the other banknotes.
thank you po for choosing the philippines (salamat sa pagpili sa Pilipinas 🇵🇭) we are happy to see "Philippines" Mentioned on TH-cam (masaya kaming makita ang "Philippines" na Binanggit sa TH-cam)
Here’s the reason why the Ph Flag should be flipped when vertical: PH REPUBLIC ACT NO. 8491 SECTION 10. The flag, if flown from a flagpole, shall have its blue field on top in time of peace and the red field on top in time of war; if in a hanging position, the blue field shall be to the right (left of the observer) in time of peace, and the red field to the right (left of the observer) in time of war.
While I find the bills interesting, the coins are the most annoying thing. In the past, the coins were just as colorful and distinct (different mixes of bronze & silver color) as their bill counterparts but the PH Central Bank had the "brilliant" idea of redesigning them to be almost indistinguishable from one another. This is bad because of how confusing it is to pay for things in a rush which is how most Filipinos do given how perpetually bad traffic is. Obviously, it was designed by people who rarely use coins and personally, I think the team who okayed it should be demoted if not outright fired.
True. I feel bad for those who have bad eyesight especially the elderly. They really can't some of the coins especially if it rusty or the surface is becoming flat
just for additional info: near the bottom right of the front side of every bill, there's baybayin(old script used by the early people of the Philippines) written on it which means "Pilipino" it's more noticeable when a light is shined upon the small area
200 peso bill is rare because in Filipino we can say that the note is "alanganin" or awkward in value. In the Philippines, retails are very common in places we call sari sari store where we can buy cheaper commodities in much much smaller amount or volume than in a convenience store Thus, prices are usually just below 100 pesos to appeal to the masses. And paying 200 pesos for a shampoo costing 12 pesos would cause the retailer to use a lot of their change, making it really very difficult to use it anywhere unless buying alot. Its complicated because despite having larger face value than a dollar, Philippine Peso is way cheaper in value and change (coins) can be too many to break you coin purse if you do not use the right bill. To summarize Below 100 - we use P1 - P100 Above 100 - we use P500 - P1000 Its difficult to find an item that you can say sits on the middle.. which by the way speaks about the social structure we have. The poor who can only afford the less 100s and the rich who gets the upper bracket. No middle. Seriously none.
We have a popular store in our city that literally display an old 200 pesos it's been there for years because of the way they flex it on every one it made me realise how rare this bank note is. Thx for the explanation
Soooo.. most of filipinos dont usually get the 200 peso bill i mean based on my living? i haven't tried to have three of those in my life , And... im pretty sure thats what he meant
I remembered my teacher calling my 200 peso bill fake during a class collection for a class project. But he kept it, and asked me to give a REAL one. I told my parents about it and they became so outraged, they forced him to accept that THAT 200 peso bill is real. He's I guess an example of the people whom have never seen a 200 peso bill0
From experience (mine and a few friends), we already encountered fake 200bill, its length is shorter than a real one (my friend encountered one with no strip). This is the reason whenever a 200 bill will be given as change I will politely ask for 100bills instead.
I remember that! The 5 peso bill was green and the 10 peso bill was brown!!! I remember there was supposedly a cat on the 10 peso bill perched on the awning of the building somewhere.
Another interesting fact about the Philippine banknotes: On the reverse side, to the right, there is a strip of patterns that feature a select weaving pattern from some of the indigenous tribes of the Philippines that changes at every denomination!
It's the old writing of Philippine Tribe (i do not know exactly what tribe) called ALIBATA. You can only see half of it at the reverse side. You can see the whole scribe when you look at it against the light.
This vid was a fact about our philippine money.. Filipinos like me wont hesitate to click and watch the video about it since it is my country's money and i want to gain more knowledge about it
@Saudi King Volintine Ander of Arabia I was actually stunned when I noticed Baybayin in the 1000 Bills. Can't believe I wasn't paying too much attention to our country's banknotes 😄
3:05 the ₱200 bill has become increasingly common during the 2023 holiday season to address the shortage of crisp ₱50 and ₱100 peso bills at the time. It’s yet to be seen if the ₱200 bills will be more common in the foreseeable future.
You do know that you can zoom in on things right? Like in computers? I am suprised that no one is talking about the fact that he is showing a war flag in his intro. Because on the philippine flag, red means war and blue means peace, so switching these colors show if the country is at war or not.
Fact: when this version was printed, there was an outcry from the scientific community since the scientific terms of the species on the back were not in italics. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas did the changes, I believe, on the next batch of printing.
@@McCaroni_Sup It's necessary. Scientific names should be written that way. If the Philippines wants to be accurate with every information on its banknotes, then there should be no room for error. Banknotes are widely considered as one of the physical identities of every country. Having errors, no matter how significant they are, might bring some sort of embarassment to the country.
Duchi people of other countries also are in the same situation, not everyone’s gonna stare at subtle detail in a 20 peso bill that can be barely seen lmao
*Philippine bank notes are the most beautiful* Literally other Filipinos: *Literally draws or writes on the money like its paper* And plus, If the bill gets torn apart we tape it... P.s. im a filipino and I fold the bill to make funny faces
US dollars are also more valuable given they're the international currency and make the world turn, yet people still scribble notes there. It's just human nature man.
I found a math equation at the back of 100 Peso bill at one point, luckily i could still turn it in cuz i was buying something from the school cafteria
That's rare with euros, i guess because most shops don't accept money with writings on it or with small cuts. I also noticed they're never too ruined while with other currencies i also used to get some pretty collapsing ones
The 200 peso bill was the least-used note out of the six denominations and because of it being rare, people see it as a “novelty bill,” or something that is not essential for everyday use.Instead, it is something that collectors save or intend for future use.
@@wvdiwbdiss I’m actually Filipino myself so I knew this since I live in the Philippines when I was a child for 9 yrs and my dad would always tell me to keep the 200 peso safe or kept secret due to its rarity
Interesting fact about the 500 Peso bill... When Cory Aquino was still alive, Benigno Aquino is all by himself on the note. She was added to the bill shortly after her death.
Hi, Chris. With respect to the Philippine flag, when displayed vertically as in the video, it is not a simple matter of flipping it. How it is displayed actually depends on whether the Philippines is in a state of peace or state of war. If the Philippines is in a state of peace, blue is on the left, red on the right. Reverse if in a state of war. Nice video, by the way. Thank you for featuring the Philippine Peso. :-) PS. the Philippine coins you showed in the video are to be replaced by a new series which also have their cool features.
There's one more thing you forgot to mention. If you hold up a note against a light source, you can see the word "Pilipino" written in Baybayin, the native script of the Filipino language, at the bottom right side of the front of each note in the series.
Technically, it's the native script of the Tagalog language, as Filipino, the standardized version of Tagalog with bits of other Philippine languages added in created by order of Pres. Manuel L. Quezon, was created _way_ after the fall of the usage of Baybayin. It has recently made a comeback thanks to linguists and the Filipino youth, along with other scripts such as Pampanga's Kulitan script.
Moondust2365 - Nope, Baybayin is an umbrella term for all of the native scripts because they have not evolved far enough from each other to be considered different scripts... even in Europe, they had different variations of Latin. www.quora.com/Is-Baybayin-really-a-writing-system-in-the-entire-pre-hispanic-Philippines-Whats-the-basis-for-making-it-a-national-writing-system-if-pre-hispanic-kingdoms-weren-t-homogenous/answer/Christopher-Ray-Miller?ch=10&share=71e5e264&srid=iQMbJ
There's also a hidden one which you actually miss and it's a very important one. In the back of every pesos bill there's a Philippines map beside it there's a text and that text is called 𝗕𝗮𝘆𝗯𝗮𝘆𝗶𝗻 an old tradional word and language of Filipino. it was used back in 16th and 17th centuries before it got supplanted by the Latin alphabet during the period of Spanish Colonization. It is very rare to see baybayin nowadays and its almost forgotten. you can only see this in history books in highschool or library.
Only partially correct. Baybayin is a script for Tagalog, one of the languages in the archipelago. There are over 150 languages in the islands, most of them have their own scripts pre-colonial era. Baybayin is specifically used for Tagalog.
Fact: when this version was designed, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas decided to have the people on the notes be younger (and smiling) than the those on the old banknotes.
As a foreigner in the Philippines for limited time visits, I've received the 200 php notes many times, so it surprises me that so many people have not seen them.
But seriously tho, ppl with bills doesn't really use centavos (mostly likely made it useless) even tho i still receive centavos, i don't just put them everywhere but i keep them and will use them. But again, there's been many times i frequently use centavos, the disgust in their face when they realize i was paying with centavos lmaoo
To add to that informing and entertaining presentation, all of our bills also feature Baybayin (Ancient Filipino writing system) printed half on the lower right hand corner of the front side and half on the lower left hand corner of the reverse side. When placed against a light source, these two halves seamlessly converge to form a four character script that when viewed from the front side correctly reads as "Pi Li Pi No"; Filipino. That aside, thank you very much for covering us.

The reason why the ₱200 bill is rarer is because the people have some belief that you should only spend it as a last ditch effort when you really have no money, otherwise keep it well hidden away from your other money.

This country is just bad
Nas daily said we have the reputation of bragging about our country in every video about us :(
While I find the bills interesting, the coins are the most annoying thing. Obviously, it was designed by people who rarely use coins and personally, I think the team who okayed it should be demoted if not outright fired.
im annoyed by the new coins too ugh, sometimes i can't tell whether i can pay in the jeep or not
Some "Idiot" People smelt the 10 peso coin because it has some nickel or brass (not sure) in it that is much valuable than 10 pesos.

200 peso bill is rare because in Filipino we can say that the note is "alanganin" or awkward in value.
In the Philippines, retails are very common in places we call sari sari store where we can buy cheaper commodities in much much smaller amount or volume than in a convenience store
Thus, prices are usually just below 100 pesos to appeal to the masses.
To summarize
Below 100 - we use P1 - P100
Above 100 - we use P500 - P1000
Its difficult to find an item that you can say sits on the middle.. which by the way speaks about the social structure we have. The poor who can only afford the less 100s and the rich who gets the upper bracket.
No middle. Seriously none.
True. Imho I rather have two 100phps at hand.
I think we need P300 instead as there seems more 300 items or easily fit under 300 but way above 100.
We have a popular store in our city that literally display an old 200 pesos it's been there for years because of the way they flex it on every one it made me realise how rare this bank note is. Thx for the explanation

This is more of a personal anecdote: I think "uncommon" would be a better description for the P200. It's not that rare. I see it maybe once a month.
I used to have it in my wallet at least once in every three months.
Maybe cause it's not that useful. I'd always have to break it and besides having a couple of hundreds make my wallet look fuller lol

I told my parents about it and they became so outraged, they forced him to accept that THAT 200 peso bill is real. He's I guess an example of the people whom have never seen a 200 peso bill0
How could he/she call himself a teacher without knowing our currency
Ur teacher's a disgrace
From experience (mine and a few friends), we already encountered fake 200bill, its length is shorter than a real one (my friend encountered one with no strip). This is the reason whenever a 200 bill will be given as change I will politely ask for 100bills instead.

Fact: when this version was printed, there was an outcry from the scientific community since the scientific terms of the species on the back were not in italics. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas did the changes, I believe, on the next batch of printing.
That's quite a pedantic (maarte) and unnecessary reaction....
@@McCaroni_Sup It's necessary. Scientific names should be written that way. If the Philippines wants to be accurate with every information on its banknotes, then there should be no room for error.
