  • Join me as I unbox an old friend, the Canon F1n (F-1n, F-1 New). This was the first professional 35mm film camera I purchased kicking off an amazing career. This mint vintage film camera is from Japan, and includes a lot of extras!

    Probably the finest film camera ever made.

    Canon New F-1 not the Canon F-1n.

    • @back40canoe
      @back40canoe ปีที่แล้ว

      That is correct. The F1n was just a modification of the F1 and a totally different camera than the New F1

      If you want to be really technical about it, it’s actually the f-1N not the f-1n. They added the capital to distinguish this model from the previous.

    Shot with the F1 (all 3 models) from 1980-1997, loved that rig. Congrats on your purchase.

    Love my Canon F1-N & power winder. Still working today, with no issues. Even if the battery dies, you can still take pictures. ( Try doing that with a digital camera today.) Makes me feel young again! 😂😂😂👍

      I know right?! Or carry around 10 spare batteries for that digital rig. I know what you mean about feeling young! I don’t feel so guilty about ordering a $10 latte now! 😂🤣

      Why do you want this? It seems to add a bunch of extra weight? Just got the camera yesterday so trying to figure things out.

    • @RetroPhotoPro
      @RetroPhotoPro  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tods4 great question! Want me to do a full tutorial on how to use it? There are a few reasons. The 1st it’s the 1st camera I bought, and started my career with it. So, there is nostalgia there for me.
      From a more practical side is this was Canon’s professional flagship camera at the time. It is rugged. It is tough. It is precision. More weight? Yes, by today’s standards for sure, but back then I don’t think people thought about it. I know I didn’t.

    About six years ago I saw a local eBay seller selling off numerous 35mm bodies. I took notice of a brand new Nikon FM in black. She wanted $45 for it. I went to her home and bought it. Along with that body she had 50 more. FEs, F2s, F bodies, F1 canons. So many I could not believe. The lady I was buying them from was about 80 years old and she was selling them for a 90 year old woman whose husband owned a large camera shop in my area. I would drop by and buy a body here and there. Two brand new FEs $50 a piece, a brand new F2 with non ai finder $100. Bought a new old stock F body from 1971 for $75. Then I looked on her shelf and there was a Canon F1 New with the AE finder. Brand new. I asked what she wanted for it. $75. I left a happy man. That wasn’t all. She still had 400 bodies left to sell. My mouth watered what she might have. A F2 Titan perhaps! Alas it was not to be. Someone came a week later and bought all 400 bodies left over. At least I came away with 6 bodies. Sadly she threw all the boxes away and wrapped the bodies in bubble wrap.

      What?! Bubble wrap!!!!! I was so excited and then boom you hit me right at the end! LOL! Still you got a great haul! I’m not going to lie I’m kinda wanting a Nikon F. They are so cool!

      @@RetroPhotoPro Yeah. She through away all the boxes. She was a very elderly woman. She probably didn’t know any better.

    This’s called the ‘New F-1’; not the ‘F-1n’. Sorry!
    The ‘New F-1’ was introduced in 1981 and the ‘F-1n’ was released in 1976.
    BTW, the original Canon F-1 from 1971 was a direct competitor to the Nikon F2 🎉

      @@coach_yo you know I should! Maybe a buying guide too! Because I see a lot of these cameras selling online missing their bottom plugs. People who don’t know to avoid that could have a bad experience.

      @coach_yo 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@RetroPhotoPro Would love to see it, I had to piece meal mine, it was missing some pieces so had to source some things like a eyepiece replacement for the viewfinder, a cap for the body cause it didn’t have one. Since they seem to be making a resurgence would be cool to see some content about it.

    Where did you order it from? I’m really interested in buying one.

    • @RetroPhotoPro
      @RetroPhotoPro  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I ordered mine from eBay (a seller from Japan) it wasn’t my first one either. I had some issues with this camera as well from the Japan seller.
      I would recommend, especially if you’re new to film photography (for the most pleasant experience) go with a reputable seller. Look at KEH, B&H, Adorama, and Robert’s Camera.
      I would use someone who knows and specializes in film. Technicians that know about this is becoming more rare, and they may not understand it. So, if I was looking local (expect to over pay) to me I would look at Garland Camera, Fort Worth Camera, and Camera Exchange.
      I hope that helps! Let me know if you have more questions! Great question!!

    I have the first mosel of the canon f1, not the n the old model before they released the n its been my first film camera and the first camera i ever bought myself will never sell it. Recently i think the shutter at 1/8 1/4 and 1/2 and 1 is acting up. Do you know where I could get the shutter repaired?

    • @RetroPhotoPro
      @RetroPhotoPro  ปีที่แล้ว

      I am in north east Texas. I had mine done at Garland Camera. For me though they didn’t need to do any shutter work. Just needed a good cleaning. If it has been a while for yours, you may have the same issue. 🤞
