Why not include a J class and 12 Metre match style racing in the Americas cup? I would watch. I would love to see full races of these classic boats. Call it Americas Cup Classic.
Sod that - the UK has to win the Cup, and elect that future races are held on these absolute beauties! So much more exciting than the foiling monohulls we've had for the last few yeasr.
couldn’t agree more. watching these beasts is a true joy! modern ACracing feels like it lacks elegance and class. they are crazy fast and the tip top of tech, but they just don’t move me when i look at them race.
I remember an old J class sailor in an interview muttering about the fact that "real sailing" was over and now they were to do with dingies, these being the 12 metres.
My kids listen to music on their phones. But they both begged for turntables too. You can love both - classy, nostalgic beauty AND cutting edge advances. It's all sailing.
These boats look immense even by today's standards - I can't imagine how they would have looked in the 1930's! 'Timeless' really is the appropriate word!
It is the coordination of that insane manual handling that *is* the very essence and definition of sailing. The current designs competing for the Cup are a testament to technology evolution, for sure, but not a testament to any sailing skill evolution. Why even bother to have any crew at all, as technology exists to operate vessels without any crew.
Hmmm.. I hear an old "Square Rigger" screaming.. nah mate.. even the J's were crap.. this is real sailing. It evolves.. I love the J's for sure.. I've been fortunate.. I sailed Gretel ( 12m Ozzy AC entry) Apollo (Maxi yatch racer) A racing trimaran and a large day trip (50 pax + crew) and loved it.. This new aproach.. yeah.. It's exciting.. it's a totally diferent sailing.. but not less real.. it's the new REAL ;-)) {and I wish I was young enough to try foils.. but hey.. memories are cool ;-)))
Great boats and good for nostalgia. but like everything, technology advances things for the better and we get to the current boats on the edge with smaller crews
no sail changes during the races = boring races / less technical skill to shine for the crew. Less teamwork, less coordination. Crew is irrelevant, basically 4 grunts 2 'drivers', 2 trimmers pressing buttons.
@@KnugLidi When the design is so good that it doesn't need to change sail downwind it is just objectively a better race boat. You can still sail with a spinnaker on any hobby or race boat you want. Let others do what they want too.
@@TheGrundigg You do realize that the winner of the Cup decides what type of design will sail in the next Cup, right. It is possible that J-class vessels will be sailing for the next Cup. The current foils competing in this year’s Cup is not a design that is set in stone.
Never mind the wars, the famines, global heating, species declining 70% in just a few decades - let's just watch the rich play on their beautiful sailing yachts!

Both classes have had numerous regattas during AC37
@@roythompson6137 I know, though none were recorded and released on TH-cam to watch and none were in a Match format.

Eternal J class - fantastic!
so beautiful
Beautifull
The real Americas Cup boats.

J Class: simply the soul of sailing.
"Foiling is nothing like sailing."
-America's Cup skipper Nathan Outteridge
Bring back the J boats:)
Amazing, which material are the black sails made of?
Beautiful. Unfortunately we have now traded grace for speed, and it’s just not the same.
It was always about speed.
The ethos of AC being sailing the latest technology and ideas. Loving the evolution from these beauties to the foilers.
The real America Cup racing boats ., real sailing not foiling
Questa è vela! 😍
The amount of manual handling required to sail these legendary boats was insane, a testament to how racing has evolved over the last 4 decades

Wow
I will wont to see a Reliance sail back!
J on foils....! Come on, ETNZ, you'll make the rules for the next one...
Team nz will come up with a replica design for new boat for next America's cup when they win this race.
How come Rainbow has KZ-1 on the Main ?
Isn't KZ the code for New Zealand ??
Would rather watch these or the 12 metres race in the America's Cup....
aging so gracefully..
That was real sailing, not the crap they have today!!!

Go and do real sailing then, and stop complaining about progress, old man.
Mr. Crichton, please define wealth.
Megestic
… and why do we have too see these monsters of the America‘s Cup? 😂
This is proper sailing not that nonsense of flying......
Is it just me or do they look like beautiful big old bulldozers, pushing so much water around?
Best yacht racing ever. Modern boats meh...

When half that crew doesn't know how to sail, the sport has definitely lost a step.

@@dorothygale1104 yes, and how does that change what I said? You think that jclass, however cool they are, could ever compete with the current boats?

Breath a bit ! Enjoy beauty when you see some...
And we’re all the better for it.
They can play with their toys in Saudi. Friends and family will enjoy traveling there.
Those were the days of true, honest craftsmanship in building and fine sailing.👴🤷♂🥲
We Kiwis admire Neville Crichton ,
he has a great love of motor sport and real sailing and is a very astute businessman .
