    The most beautiful and elegant yachts ever built and still to this day the most fabulous sight on any water. Their has been some fabulous yachts designed and built since the J’s were originally floated but none as elegant. They are simply the most beautiful thing.

    It takes a team of magicians to sand the hull from sheet ally to final clear coat, the hours days weeks months, just in preparation blows my mind, and then the hole package. To me one of the most beautiful things a human being can make.

    Though built by the famous Herreshoff Company, the original 1934 Rainbow (owned by Harold Vanderbilt) was designed by William Burgess. Burgess designed two other America's Cup defenders, Enterprise (1930) and Ranger (1937), as well as early aircraft and hydroplanes. Rainbow's lines remain as beautiful today as ever.
    I'm surprised that this reproduction in aluminium comes in at 180 tons. The 1934 wooden hulled Rainbow displaced a lithe 141 tons, but then she was comparatively sparsely furnished below decks -- a racing machine without an elaborate diesel electric engine system and batteries, air conditioning, household sized galley and the rest of today's über yacht requisites. Under America's Cup rules of the 1930's, this Rainbow redux would only represent the Netherlands, and would have had to sail to New York in order to compete. Holland Jachtbouw, builder of the new Rainbow deserves thanks for bringing such a gracious and strong design back to life. They've gone on to build another J-Class boat, the 1934 Topaz, designed by Frank Cabot Paine and reborn in 2015.

    I had the great pleasure of working with Jared on the Shamrock five jk3 project in pendennis England it was great sailing with him on Shamrock at the 99 and tigua classics and then having him host Us in Amsterdam for the boat trade show I found him to be incredibly intelligent polite person myself and the crew had a wonderful time with him a true Marine architect an artist once again I feel so privileged to have being able to meet and hang and enjoy his knowledge and Company

    Very nice movie, such grace and elegance to see on the water. Modern race sailing boats are also nice and maybe faster but, they will never beat the looks of the J-class.

    My recollection is that Rainbow in 1934 or whenever she raced was widely considered not as fast (nor as beautiful) as her British competitor Endeavor and relied upon her skipper/crew to emerge victorious. So it's a minor surprise that anyone today would use Rainbow's lines to build a brand new yacht at monstrous cost. Probably figure they can tweak either the lines or other variables to boost speed. Ranger, by comparison, was considered a rocket back in the day and so no surprise her lines were chosen early on for a reproduction.

    Another classic from past, "Rainbow" is a modern day replica of the famous "Rainbow" of the 1930's, built in modern materials to the new J-class rule, which allows new vessels to enter this elite fleet. See documentaries about the restoration of the original British 46.30-metre classic gaff-rigged cutter Lulworth, and the rebuild of a Britannia replica - both from the same period -- on our Nautical History playlist. th-cam.com/play/PLD1D387349710EBA4.html

    It makes me wonder about the limits of design. Can a sailing boat's design be so perfect that what comes after may just be changes but not improvements. They are the Helen of Troy of yachts.

    Seems the post 1945 history is a bit short of real data. Shamrock V had been sailed by different post war owners I joined as crew near the end of a refit by C&N in Southampton in 1978-81, while Endeavour was just an empty hull up on Calshot Spit in England. Velsheda was also afloat before Endeavour was reffited for Elizabeth Meyer by Huisman in the Netherlands.

    Wat een prachtige mooiste zeilschepen die er bestaan. Als ik het geld ervoor had zou ik hem volledig zelfsuportend maken en ook dat de Zijlen via een knop uit getrokken konden worden dan kan ik met een paar man weg iplv 20 man mee te moeten nemen 😅👍👌 en een mooi stukje text en uitleg over de nieuwere technieken die er nu aan en in gelegd zijn. Heb de film met plezier bekeken. Ps. Bij de volgende even een professionelere muziek neer zetten of helemaal niks.

    The current Rainbow, as all American J-Class yachts, is a replica. So although she has a link with past, she actually has no past. In contrast, Shamrock V, Endeavour and Velsheda are restored boats (for the most part only parts of the hulls are originals) not replicas,

    • @gkelly941
      @gkelly941 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      The J Class was designed and built to be day sailors, rather than for use as offshore racers. They are also significantly slower than modern offshore racing yachts, that are lighter, and have more sail area to displacement that the J class.

    • @feanor3876
      @feanor3876 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gkelly941 That's not entirely true, all of the competitors had to sail to the competition which meant crossing the atlantic. It actually led to accusations of unfairness from the competitors because the US boats could be built strictly as racers. The comment wasn't a reflection of their competitiveness. It was just a statement that it would be nice to see them gathered in one spot for an overnight race. I consider them to be beautiful in the same way a Spitifire MK 9 is.

    • @jfv65
      @jfv65 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      in the Netherlands we have a racing class called 'Regenboog'. The hull shape of those looks a lot like a mini J-class.
      The sail rigging is different though.

      I sailed on a 2.4 Meter sailboat. They are around 13 feet long and are miniture replicas of the 12 meter Americas Cup Yachts. They are fun little single handed racing sailboats.

    How fast can one of these yachts go at full sail in perfect conditions? Roughly...?

    • @dap777754
      @dap777754 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Just a guess (altho I did sail briefly aboard Shamrock V) but hull speed might be 11 or 12 knots. So upwind under ideal conditions maybe 9-11 knots I'm guessing, power reaching at 11-12 knots; in surfing conditons you can exceed hull speed for brief periods, so maybe 15 or 16 knots in surf conditions.
