There's a cooking channel called SORTEDfood that does a pass-it-on challenge that I think would be fun for VFX as well. Basically you start with a theme, and everyone takes turns working individually to add something and work towards the final goal. Wren: He really captured the scene. Perhaps bordering on a cheat by essentially just painting on his tablet. But, he is the only one that managed to capture the key focal point of the light through and within the curl of the crashing wave, which really was the heart of the painting.
Then Jordan: A practically photoreal depiction. But didn't manage to capture the light and wave action.
Sam: Once again a fantastic scene with a lot of story, just not any real story about Bob's scene. But this time the story didn't capture the Bob Ross scene nearly as well. He basically threw in a bit of the source material; a shoreline and a couple of trees, and then went his own way.
Niko: Sadly those waves just did not work. A tranquil shoreline scene became some image of an alien world or something. Cool, but not true to the source material.

I would argue that Sam deserves a deduction in the technical note as he did so much unrequested playstuff that he completely forgot to give sky and water the right coloring to hit the mood which should have been easy with his engine. His looked spectacular and lively (cause it was animated) but it did not hit that aspect of Bob's painting, which i would count as a fail.
Wren got the coloring also wrong, but at least the "honest way" he wasn't that experienced with the brush and color selection and could not redo it unlimited times with better fits as he was alreaydy supposed to go on to another color and another detail. Only thing he outright failed on was the improvement of the palmtrees, but his shadows still looked more like the Ross thing than the "asset" ones from the other results. Copy/Paste fronds and all. Had Wren used the system as extensively as the others did their render engines before this challenge i'm sure his picture would have been even closer as he'd not have despaired so much over what to pick...
