Sterling's 20 Year eligibility for the Pro-Football Hall of Fame has already expired. His only chance to make the Hall of Fame will be if he is nominated and voted in as a Senior (those players who completed their careers more than 25 years ago). I'm hoping for the best.
In my opinion Sterling is the 2nd best Wide Reciever ever after Jerry Rice in terms of how good he was and what he was capable of doing. He was a different level of player. Like a smarter, more polished, stronger, more techincaly sound version of Terrell Owens with way better hands. A different type of body type at 6'0 218 lbs. Incredible route runner. He was like a better version of T.O. Just did not last as long. Had he stuck there with Favre and not gotten hurt - he is the only Wr I feel could have challenged Jerry Rices records and Packers could have had a dynasty of their own. Certainly would have won at least 2 with Sterling and Favre.

All 3 were fantastic athletes and receivers. I just feel Sharpe was the best and would have had some amazing career stats had it not been for a freak neck injury.
@@ReezyR Ah. Sharpe suffered a nerve injury in the second to last game of the 94 season vs Atlanta. The injury is called a neck “stinger”. He would feel numbness and pins and needles in his limbs and feel a lot of pain. When Sterling’s head was jammed back against the Falcons, this caused Sharpe’s top two vertebrae to loosen which caused the pain. He would have needed corrective surgery to fuse the two vertebrae together which would have been a dangerous procedure, as well as cost him a lot of playing time. So he just decided to look after his health and retired at age 29. It’s tragic. A HOF career cut short. Sadly I’ve seen that happen twice in my lifetime as a Packers fan. First to Sharpe. And then to Nick Collins. It’s for the best that he looked after his health, but it’s disappointing to see what could have been.

I remember when he was active - Madden talking about receivers "You got Jerry Rice and Sterling Sharpe at the top of the class, then you got to go a bit to get to the next group". If he hadn't gotten injured, he would have been there for both the Favre GB super bowls, and they probably win the Denver one. I’m a Bear fan. I got to see Sterling twice a year. At his peak, he was arguably the best receiver in the league BEFORE Favre got there. At that time, he was (no pun intended) neck and neck with Rice for best in the game. If I had a vote, Sterling would’ve been a 1st ballot HOFer. The fact he still isn’t yet in is downright stupid.
I didn’t think Favre would win the 3 straight MVP’s without Sterling. But if he had Sterling those years, with Robert Brooks and Antonio Freeman, they would’ve broke some records. I still can’t believe Sterling retired. He had the neck injury and caught 3 touchdowns the next week.

I remember when AB was having his breakout season, I remember looking at that #84 and thinking- “he reminds me of Sterling Sharpe”. That’s how good he was.
I was in the press box at the 1993 Packer-Bear game at Lambeau and I happened to be sitting next to Paul Wiggin, who was then an advance scout for the Vikings. At some point, the Packers faced a third-and-long. Favre threw a sideline pass to Sharpe, who was about 5 yards short of the first down. A safety and cornerback were right there with him, but Sharpe powered through them to get the first down. Wiggin commented, "That's why Sharpe is better than Rice. He can do everything Rice can do, but Rice never would have got that first down."
Just imagine what kind of numbers this guy would have had if he was able to play with Favre for a few more years. This guy absolutely deserves to be in the hall of fame, the only person who could keep up with him in his era is the widely regarded best WR of all time, that's it and that says enough.
He made it look easy all business no hoopla no arrogance, played tough and consistent a QB's dream receiver and confidence builder. No doubt as a Viking fan I know he was a maniac.

As a kid at the time, my regret is not recognizing HOW GREAT (even at the time I thought he was right up there with one of the bests) he was. One of the reasons I think all these years ... that GB has been one of my favorite teams (aka #1 or #2)

The wild thing is his brother's teammate (Terrell Davis) getting in gives him hope. They were both similar in that they had careers cut short by injuries but were top 3 at their position and had an incredibly dominant stretch of a few years. Nobody was gonna top Jerry Rice in the early 90s, but Sterling was pretty close to it.
Read a Sports Illustrated article where they ask the top defensive backs during that era and they picked Sharpe over Rice, Risin, Irvin etc. as the best. Fact.

Still to this day the only Packers jersey I've ever (and will ever) owned, this coming from a diehard Bears fan. He was special in a way that he didn't just excel, he dominated pro football. Man-i was I elementary school (in Detroit, MI) during his prime, and aleven though we did have Herman (who also doesn’t get his due of how how freakishly dominant he was), I’m tellin you man-Sterling Sharpe was a different kind of gamebreaking receiver. He was absolutely FEARED....and for very good reason. This man gave us the BUSINESS, twice a year, rain or shine. You had to see him play to really know; he was on a level all himself. Zero weaknesses in his game. He did EVERYTHING unbelievably great. I still think he was made in a lab that set out to engineer the perfect prototype NFL flanker. And far exceeded what they aimed to accomplish.

Sterling broke the catch record 2 years in a row and even had 18 TDs his final season with a vertebrae injury. If not for terrible QB play in '88, '90, '91 he would have hit 1,000 every year. In my opinion he was better than Tim Brown, Cris Carter, Andre Reed, or Michael Irvin (Brown and Irvin, respectfully, tore ACLs in '89 though). Heartbreaking to know he would have gotten a ring with Green Bay's success the next 3 years. If they had Sterling, who knows. They might have won 3 in a row.

So he just decided to look after his health and retired at age 29. It’s tragic. A HOF career cut short. Sadly I’ve seen that happen twice in my lifetime as a Packers fan. First to Sharpe. And then to Nick Collins. It’s for the best that he looked after his health, but it’s disappointing to see what could have been.

For any football fan who watched during this era, Sterling Sharpe is a Hall of Famer, equal to Gale Sayers for having a short but bright career.
Sterling Sharpe had a more productive career than Sayers, but Sayers is in the HoF, and Sharpe is not. There is no excuse that can justify it. Sharpe didn't miss a game during his 7 yr. career, and started in all of them (112 games). And All Pro 3 times, and a Pro Bowler 5 times. Is he not inducted because he retired when he didn't want to become paralyzed from a neck injury that was caused from playing football?

I don’t know how anyone can watch this video and argue that he isn’t one of the best receivers they’re ever seen in their life. He has it ALL. Speed, hands, route running, some weird ability to get wide open despite the defense paying extra attention to him, incredible YAC ability, great size and strength and the willingness to go over the middle. He was humble and focused… dude said he wanted to go to Green Bay because there would be fewer distractions. In the 80s. Do you understand how baller that is? if his career hadn’t been cut short we’d be talking about him in the same breath as Rice, Moss, Megatron, and TO.

I remember when he was active - Madden talking about receivers "You got Jerry Rice and Sterling Sharpe at the top of the class, then you got to go a bit to get to the next group". If he hadn't gotten injured, he would have been there for both the Favre GB super bowls, and they probably win the Denver one. They'd be talking about him and Jerry as !a and 1b as the greatest receivers ever. He needs to be in the hall. He deserves it.

I’m a Bear fan. I got to see Sterling twice a year. At his peak, he was arguably the best receiver in the league BEFORE Favre got there. At that time, he was (no pun intended) neck and neck with Rice for best in the game. If I had a vote, Sterling would’ve been a 1st ballot HOFer. The fact he still isn’t yet in is downright stupid.
I didn’t think Favre would win the 3 straight MVP’s without Sterling. But if he had Sterling those years, with Robert Brooks and Antonio Freeman, they would’ve broke some records. I still can’t believe Sterling retired. He had the neck injury and caught 3 touchdowns the next week.
I grew up a Lions fan, but always respected Sharpe because he played the game like Barry - no showboating, no celebrating, just went out and did his job better than everybody else.

I was in the press box at the 1993 Packer-Bear game at Lambeau and I happened to be sitting next to Paul Wiggin, who was then an advance scout for the Vikings. At some point, the Packers faced a third-and-long. Favre threw a sideline pass to Sharpe, who was about 5 yards short of the first down. A safety and cornerback were right there with him, but Sharpe powered through them to get the first down. Wiggin commented, "That's why Sharpe is better than Rice. He can do everything Rice can do, but Rice never would have got that first down."
Just imagine what kind of numbers this guy would have had if he was able to play with Favre for a few more years. This guy absolutely deserves to be in the hall of fame, the only person who could keep up with him in his era is the widely regarded best WR of all time, that's it and that says enough.
He made it look easy all business no hoopla no arrogance, played tough and consistent a QB's dream receiver and confidence builder. No doubt as a Viking fan I know he was a maniac.

As a kid at the time, my regret is not recognizing HOW GREAT (even at the time I thought he was right up there with one of the bests) he was. One of the reasons I think all these years ... that GB has been one of my favorite teams (aka #1 or #2)

The wild thing is his brother's teammate (Terrell Davis) getting in gives him hope. They were both similar in that they had careers cut short by injuries but were top 3 at their position and had an incredibly dominant stretch of a few years. Nobody was gonna top Jerry Rice in the early 90s, but Sterling was pretty close to it.

Easily one of the greatest WRs I've ever seen play in my lifetime and one of my 3 personal favorite to watch. Still to this day the only Packers jersey I've ever (and will ever) owned, this coming from a diehard Bears fan. He was special in a way that he didn't just excel, he dominated pro football. Man-i was I elementary school (in Detroit, MI) during his prime, and aleven though we did have Herman (who also doesn’t get his due of how how freakishly dominant he was), I’m tellin you man-Sterling Sharpe was a different kind of gamebreaking receiver. He was absolutely FEARED....and for very good reason. This man gave us the BUSINESS, twice a year, rain or shine. You had to see him play to really know; he was on a level all himself. Zero weaknesses in his game. He did EVERYTHING unbelievably great.
I still think he was made in a lab that set out to engineer the perfect prototype NFL flanker. And far exceeded what they aimed to accomplish.

Sterling Sharpe should be in the HOF. Yes, he only played 7 years, but so did Gale Sayers and Terrell Davis. How many actual good years did Kurt Warner have? 5?. Sterling broke the catch record 2 years in a row and even had 18 TDs his final season with a vertebrae injury. If not for terrible QB play in '88, '90, '91 he would have hit 1,000 every year. In my opinion he was better than Tim Brown, Cris Carter, Andre Reed, or Michael Irvin (Brown and Irvin, respectfully, tore ACLs in '89 though). Heartbreaking to know he would have gotten a ring with Green Bay's success the next 3 years. If they had Sterling, who knows. They might have won 3 in a row.
Imagine if Sterling didn't retire due to injury and played in Super Bowl 32 against his brother Shannon it will be a Sharpe Bowl but who knows how it would end too guess we never know
