We who worship music are forever building shrines to express our faith and devotion.
I think the attraction to vinyl is that it's many many quirks demand the user really direct his attention, time and money in the pursuit of a great listening experience- call it a kind of pilgrimage for the faithful.
As music delivery becomes cheaper and the streaming libraries larger the music itself is somewhat devalued. Vinyl is the utter and complete opposite of streaming. It demands from us all the things that streaming effectively killed off.
Hope your back and legs are feeling better and let's get to 5k by Jan 1!!

In 1985 or so my roommate came home with a Thorens TD 166 , played it maybe a dozen times and stored it away to make room for CD. 28 years later after much begging I got that same table that turned me into a crazy audiophile. Like new it is one of my favorite things.

Always a good time to hear you wax lyrical about your beautiful vinyl collection and turntables. Alas, my vinyl days are firmly in my past, with my remaining vinyl bequeathed to my son and now all on CD. However, I still enjoy the technology, beauty, and magic of spinning platters. However, I will leave the vinyl collecting to others and remain happy in my streaming of ripped CD flac files. Oh man! Ok so for me (i'm 53) it started back in the 70's when I ruined all my older brother's rock albums (by trying to play them and scratching the hell out of them balancing pennys on the cartidge). Then in the early 80's my mom bought me a a radio shack rack system with a turntable built in on top, i thought it was the cat's meow. Well then in the late 80's CD's came out. My girlfriend (now wife) bought me a Technics cd player and only used my record player a little bit. Then mp3's and Napster and I got rid of all my albums and CD's. Well then comes about 2008 when my wife and I was at a yard sale and a guy had a old Pioneer turntable for sale playing a Led Zeppelin 3 album with Pioneer CS 99 hooked up to a Nikko 8095 integrated amp. I purchased it all. I now have a Outlaw Audio RR2160MKll Integrated amp, MoFi Studiodeck with a Ultra tracker, Outlaw Audio M8 Subwoofer, Still have the Pioneer CS 99's (Love real walnut wood, my wife does not) with a pair of Dahli Zensor speakers to round out the 4.1 sound. Rebuilt my record collection, have 289 of my favorite albums. What a Fracking Rabbit hole (1st pressing's and reading and looking up the deadwax) I jumped down with everything i have learned. I do listen to CD's and mp3's with my Zune Mp3 player in my Truck. Occasionally stream at home with the Outlaw amp but nothing beats playing your favorite album with a cup of coffee in the morning or at night with a few of your favorite cocktails.

nowadays people have choices that I did not have as a music loving teen. Back then vinyl was the only game in town. No CDs, no streaming. no Internet, no youtube, no MP3s, etc. My vinyl collection goes back about 50 years. If you want to get into vinyl now ask yourself this - are you OK with having to get up every 20 minutes to flip the record over? Are you OK with vinyl records eating up your free space as your collection grows? Collecting vinyl can be expensive, are you OK with that? Are you OK with the expense of a decent stereo? If you're OK with these things then yeah, maybe vinyl is for you.

I’ve been buying cassettes, vinyl, CDs, DVDs, books, magazines non stop since the early 80s. When I say early 80s there really has t NEVER been a lull in keeping track and following music. Maybe there was a couple of weeks here and there when I didn’t buy music. Considering I’ve also attended over 2000 concert and I always support one of the bands by purchasing music my collection is giant. I’ll always buy. Returning to vinyl has been a great connection between me and our 15-year-old son. We get along fine but don't have a lot in common. Vinyl and the gear has been an activity we do together. It's also been a rediscovering of listening to an entire album rather than clicking through streaming selections. And now that I have the budget and means, I will not be stuck with the garbage I had in the 80s. The sound quality exceeds those of CD systems of the 90s. Of course, none of us had any idea what an external DAC was back then either. I probably won't go back to CDs given I have a WIIM and Tidal account. One can really put together an excellent system for not a lot of money between the second-hand market and Chi-fi stuff.

Hey Bob - I'm getting back into vintage gear as a hobby. I'm close to retirement, and I really wanted to create sound like I remember back in the 70s and 80s. My first setup was a Kenwood receiver, Technics deck with Shure V15, and Advent speaks. Maybe not audiophile quality, but for a 18 year old on a limited income, it sure sounded awesome to me.
I just picked up some 70s Kenwood separates and a early 80s Technics deck. It needs a touch of work, so I'm taking my time to do it right. For now, I'll be driving Paradigms - at least until I can get my Advents refoamed and checked out.

I bought powered speakers with all the modern tech BT, USB and SD slots with 10 inch Woofers with lots of base. I've put $700 into it and I'm happy with that. first turntable in 1972 was a Garrard because it had a good reputation, unfortunately just before that they had gone cheap, I assume hoping to get by on that good reputation. I threw it away and got a Dual. It lasted for may years before I upgraded to a B&O, not knowing that it's cartridge wasn't interchangeable. Threw it away just recently and now have a Fluance RT82 and a Pioneer PL 514 I got thru GoodwillFinds for $65 (plus $35 shipping). Advertised as parts only but all it needed was a new cartridge and belt. I completely refurbished it (following a TH-cam video). It is semi-automatic, which I like. I'm amused by people that want a remote control with any new piece of gear but a manual turntable! The return mechanism on the Pioneer is very simple. I'll look froward to part two. you probably know already, but Skylabs has a couple of videos on the best vintage turntables.

Equally cd as getting great sounding music cheap is always appealing. Today an increasingly number of artists only release their music physically on vinyl. Ofcourse many artist appealing to the young and everyone else offer their music on steaming services but having that physical copy in your hands makes it special. Even if you in no way an audiophile. In Australia records are not cheap brand new typically going from $50 AUD up. Local artists only produce small runs so you must jump to buy quick or you will pay the stupid tax later for rare local records. Merry Christmas.

I have a Technics SL7 for the ladies because they refuse to touch the now: Garrard 301, Ortofon 12" arm. SPU GM/E cart, Ortofon 2mBlue for the poorer pop stuff, Ortofon 2mMono for the old 60's and 50's vinyl I have. These can be interchanged quickly with just tracking weight adjustment as they are all in fixed heads. Honestly, that old mono stuff, with a proper mono cartridge is so visceral, live and yes - in the room sometimes better than the expensive MC SPU. It is amazing. I do use a G.Slee Jazz to EQ the older FFRR Decca mono's and yes, it does make a difference.

I love it because of the sound, the way it gets me away from a screen/device, and the fact that I own the music and have compensated the artist more fairly when I buy a new record.
One thing I wonder as I ponder upgrades in 2024 - does it make sense to dump a bunch of money into a tube amp and nice speakers when my primary genre is rock music, much of which comes from an era of pretty tight recording budgets and crappier sounding recordings?

My wife and I wanted a turntable a few years ago to play some of our old vinyl and new stuff we had bought on artist's websites. Not really knowing that the suitcase setups were actually crap, we thought it was just our old records and chalked up the ones we bought from websites as getting damaged during shipping. Nah, that wasn't it. We went to HHN at Universal Studios and bought straight from the source and very carefully brought them back home. Still skips and sputters and even just stops playing. Then late last year I started getting into "hi-fi". I watched videos talking about Audio Technica being a pretty good entry level setup and never once heard any of these vloggers talk about the dreaded suitcase crap 😆. My wife still listens to her suitcase crap but can't longer than about a song before it craps out. So needless to say, I will be making the jump to an actual turntable setup in the coming months as I'm expanding into this great hi-fi journey. Awesome video and you earned my sub! Sorry for the long story 😅

Great video! With that being said let me give some caveats that I have with vinyl. 1) No pricing consistency at all. The pricing is all over the board. Some albums that shouldn’t cost much are priced into the stratosphere. Some are cheap. It literally makes no sense at all. 2) Sound quality. Some great albums just sound like crap. The music is great but the actual recording quality sucks. Are remastered albums better? Sometimes and sometimes not. I’ve heard remastered versions that sound horrible when compared to the original. 3) Too many formats. Direct to disk, Original Master Recordings, Half speed, 45 RPM versions, etc.
It’s a bloody mess trying to find out which version you really want when there is no test drive. It’s just too easy to get burned. Some versions of the albums that you love sound better than the original and some are horrible. The vinyl companies are masters of marketing and often set us up for the fall. The greed here is off the hook! Often, we get burned 40 ways from Sunday.
    4) Grading. Some retailers are good at this and some are terrible. How much is a used good quality album worth? Who knows? Too much guess work here for me. Sometimes the cover is nice and the vinyl looks like it spent 2 years on the road with the J. Geils Band. And Vice versa.
    5) Cheap turntables. If you buy a cheap table, that’s exactly what you have my friend. Good tables cost money. It’s just the way it is. Look at it this way. Do you like Chevy Vegas or Ferraris? Any table worth its salt will cost you a good sum of money. Don’t forget, you are buying a machine here. Good engineering and build quality will cost you. I have a good “entry level “ Pro-ject table with an Ortofon cartridge and it comes in around $600. Is it great? No. It’s okay.
    6) Can you find any album that you desire? No. Some are almost impossible to find and if you do, look out for the price. And of course, are you willing to pay the price and get a very worn or damaged piece? Is the cover “ring worn “ or had a couple of hundred joints rolled on it? Does it even have a sleeve? Is it paper or something else?
    7) Time. Do you have time to go from one record store to another and rifle through endless stacks of junk wax looking for that diamond in the rough? Can you burn a tank of gas every Saturday going to Goodwill and endless garage sales? This process can be exhausting and very tedious.
    8) Do you know how to set up a table correctly? Align the cartridge? Set the azimuth, tracking force, overhang, etc. Do you need a stylus gauge? These are real concerns especially if you want a used or older table. Do you need a cleaning machine, clamp or weight, brush, Zerostat? This road can be very long.
These points are just a few things to consider before jumping into this thing called vinyl. Now, let me say this.
I love the way that vinyl sounds when properly done. I really am an analog guy. But…..is it really worth it?
Not for me. I have a very nice Marantz CD player and love the sound that I get from it. CD’s are a lot more cost effective for me and it’s easy to find most of them for an affable price. They are really hard to damage. Jewel cases are cheap too. I also stream lots of music from various websites. The libraries are endless and you can listen till your ears fall off. Lossless is widely available now too. Great sound with little to fret over. You need a stereo rig with a decent streamer and DAC to do this correctly but it’s still more cost effective than vinyl.
To close, the advantages to CDs and streaming far outweigh the vinyl collecting hobby to me. But, if you have the time and money to go the vinyl route then do it. It can be rewarding!

@@UnitedStatesofAnalog Thank you Analog for the reply! When I was a young man, I bought albums like crazy. They were affordable and like you say they were an experience. We couldn’t wait to see the cover art and listen to both sides. By gum it was exciting! My friends and I would be at the record store every week with our tiny paychecks just biting at the bit to check out the new releases. It was a great time in our lives and I never regret it. Of course this was before social media ( Way before social media ! Lol! ) and hunting wax was truly a weekly event. I would say that most new releases were in the $4-5 dollar range and minimum wage was $1.60 an hour. Now that I am retired and some new releases or remasters are over a “C” note, I have had to slam on the brakes. Thank you for the reminder of how much fun the “hunt” was. It was so worth it. I got into vinyl when I was 9 or 10 years old. Started with my father's classical vinyl followed by my own Ventures On Stage and The Beach Boys In Concert. I started working in record stores in 1970, quit college, and my career was set. I worked a total of 20 or more years in several record stores and ended up with a vinyl collection of about 5000 or so from then to the present. I decided to move to the Philippines so I sold the collection to my best friend, the owner of Music Millennium in Portland, OR. I kept some favorites. I just bought a Sony PS-LX5, a decent turntable. I'll upgrade later. I have some favorite vinyl being stored with my son. I'm starting to buy more vinyl again. I can't get it out of my system. I also sold most of my very large CD collection after ripping them to a hard drive. So now I have some vinyl, some favorite CDs, and streaming via Qobuz, Tidal, and Spotify. And, of course, TH-cam. Love that you have Grass Is Greener by Grant Green on your wall. An excellent album. Thanks for your wonderful videos. I watch them all. I always find your videos so easy to relate to personally. By the way, I am almost 72 years old which will give you an idea how long I've been participating in this vinyl madness.

I meticulously clean and maintain my records and honestly, very rarely have a pop or click, there is usually a little surface noise but most Quality Records pressing have very little noise.
I agree, don't like pops/clicks/static, but you can avoid them with a little effort, and I'd rather listen to a good copy of an album to my copy of the CD any day.
The soundstage is usually much more expansive, less compression and greater dynamics IMHO.

When I got my first real turntable, plug it into my Lafayette receiver that I have bought, a couple of years before, and hardly any sound, it was like what the heck. My old RCA turntable I was running thought it worked fine, turns out it had a high output ceramic cart. I did not know I needed a pre-amp, I mean I was what like 14? I like the sound of some of my redbook versions of a cd, than the SACD version of the same music, and SACD samples at a million times per second compared to 44.1 thousand per second for regular cds. Don't buy that lps have better sound than cds. Some do and some definitely don't. Especially f you have a truly great cd player. I've never had a cd player quit on me and go bad. Playing something with a laser doesn't degrade the surface of what the music is pressed on, like a cartridge playing an lp. I have never had a cd players laser wear out either. A USED CD is the equivelent of a new lp. But $5 vs. $40 is quite a difference. A cd can have a hunded scratches and play without any noise at all, very often. Only if the scratches are so deep and severe will they be audible when playing the cd. There is a great nostalgia factor with lps and I play them also. Perhaps cd players have just a slight mechanical presentation to their sound and vinyl has a slightly more effortless ease; but in my experience, only with a good moving coil cartridge. Moving magnet cartridges in my experience, sound like they're "trying" and that makes for a mechanical sound. So subtle, almost subconcious, but it's definitely there. You need amazingly fast transient response to accomplish that magical ease and effortlessness that maybe only lps have and good reel to reel tapes have. Glad to have what lps I have, but can't see spending $35 and $40, when I can get cds for $2 to $5 or less. And as I said for all practical purposes a used cd will play perfectly over 90% of the time, like a brand new
    vinyl lp is supposed to.

There is a record store here in town that was selling CDs for 25 cents each to clear out their warehouse! No lie!

Cds are so good. Most of them... I've been. doing 60+ step modifications on them, as I've been experimenting for over 30 years. They sound cleaner than the half speed mastered lps I was into back in the 1980s. We gladly paid $20 for many of those records when new. Now we can get that kind of ofsound quality for a buck or two. The early early cd players were at fault for the most part. The cds were great, and their greatness is beginning to be realized by people with really much improved cd players...I have no idea whether my modded cd players are state of the art, beyond the state of the art, or not that close. My guess is one of the first two two though....or close.

    Silly humans.
All the music is almost for free to pluck from the net.
How to make it sound good is surprisingly easy.

Don’t do it! I would definitely go for the CDs. I have at least 1,000 records, but my CDs get way more play because they’re way more convenient.

I’m 200+ records deep, BE WARNED, you will eventually want the bells and whistles. My sound system has probably costed me about $3K at this point and time, and I see at least another $1K I want to invest currently.
Records are expensive, but they are a sound investment in more ways than one.
I found Alice In Chains MTV unplugged in a shop a few years back for $45, that album now sells around $250+. I could sell it for a profit tomorrow if I so wanted.

I hear you. I found out I was sitting on a $300 Pumpkins record from the early 90's! Who knew!

All this discussion about sound quality is horse BS. First, music is listened with a heart. So just choose format which you LOVE. End. Second, sound quality does not depend on the medium only - some things sound good on record, some good on CD, some things will never sound good on any medium. I prefer vinyl, although I admit it can get expensive and inconvenient, but that is what I love. CDs can sound great, hifi streaming and digital files with nice dac sounds great as well..but I cant fall in love with them.
