Twisted Coil was recorded at last year’s spectacular live performance of the third Ayreon album ‘Into The Electric Castle’. Over four nights at Tilburg’s 013 venue (the scene of Lucassen’s Ayreon Universe series of live shows in 2017) Lucassen, his band and one of modern progressive music’s most emphatic of casts celebrated the 20th anniversary of ‘Into the Electric Castle’ in front of 12,000 adoring fans from 64 different countries who had flown in from around the world.

I've been to Tilburg and to hear that live was definitely once in a lifetime experience. My friend and I drove an old and beaten Peugeot 106 from Croatia to Netherlands with total of 3500km. Would do it again in no time for this. Totally worth it!

I think it's a glowing testament to Arjen's force of will, charisma, passion, and charm, that this show was ever able to happen at all. And so much respect, and credit, to all the artists, musicians, and other people who were willing to help realise this.

Damian rules! Threshold made a big mistake in letting him go. They should’ve made him a partner, IMO, but I guess it’s more about money than art. What a shame.
I absolutely love the stage chemistry between all the musicians. The eye contact, the energy, the smiles...It’s the perfect human equation! 🤘🏼
The buildup of this song is phenomenal
This song holds a special place in my heart. It so adequately describes what depression feels like, atleast how it feels / felt to me. The despair, the guilt, the anger, and the sarcasticness of it, as if god himself was challenging me. I have had some really dark thoughts about that 'perfect day', because such a day would be my last. This performance by Damian is incredible as well, the emotion he puts in his voice and his facial expressions really top it all off.
for me it is about the all consuming feeling of guilt, how it ruins your dreams and makes you live a lie. Makes you long for another life without guilt. The feeling of guilt never truly leaves you, you may go days or weeks without feeling it, but it will always be there.
Reminder to those of you enjoying Damian's vocals here... his work in the band Headspace is equally magnificent and really underappreciated :)
He sounded great also in Rick Wakeman's Out There... amazing album, amazing vocals!

Oh man... The entire Guilt Machine album has kept me going for over a year now, I sadly was to late to buy tickets for this amazing show, but to see this version of Twisted Coil here on youtube, unexpected, is unreal to me. This is so insanely good and epic. I'm speechless and almost in tears.
Arjen, if you read this: Thank you for all your work, I'm a huge fan of all your albums, but thanks in particular for Guilt Machine. This album might've saved my life. It truly mighhave. I was in such, such dark times 2 years ago, felt completely alone, lonely and worthless, guilty of everything that went wrong in my life. I was on the verge of comitting suicide, unable to ask for help since I was unable to tell what was wrong with me. I was so disconnected to myself and my emotions... I just wanted it all to be over. Then I discovered that you had other works beside Ayreon too. Fell in love with Ambeon quickly, then it was Guilt Machine's turn.
With this song, with this album, you gave me words. Words to explain what was going wrong inside of my head, not only to others but also to myself. Over the couple of the last years I've used Twisted Coil a lot of times to try to show people how I feel since I myself am still very awkward with and short of words. Guilt Machine made me understand myself, just enough to be able to still ask for help instead of slowly dying a lonely death. I was crying for the complete first listen of this album. Arjen... Thank you. Your music means a lot to me. A lot.
@TFOLLT Great post man. That is what great art is all about, making us feel and connect with ourselves and whatever lies inside. I wanted to tell you about the tickets you mentioned. Me and my best friend are great fans of Ayreon and for the first time we traveled to see this live. We had tickets booked the first day they were out and everything. We took another friend with us on the trip, but he had no ticket for the concert and we thought "it is too late for it now", but it turns out that there are legal sites were people sell their tickets back because they cannot attend it for whatever reason and I was stunned to find that the price asked was the same as the one we had paid originally. *So we bought a ticket literally the day before the show* and our friend got in with us and we had a blast.
I won't say the site's name ... I do not remember it and I am not here to advertise ... I just wanted to help a fan and give you the message that it is never too late :)

While I do enjoy this rendition, I feel Damian Wilson's voice is too theatrical for Guilt Machine. The frailty of Jasper's performance is just perfect for the themes, the music, and the lyrical content of the album. Wilson is honestly too confident of a singer to really nail the song. Still a really good live version though.

Indeed it's amazing how Damian becomes one with the tracks he sings. That amazed me since the very first time we worked together.
The tour with Les Miserables really honed his voice and delivery to a fine edge....

Up until a couple of months ago, I didn't even know who Damian Wilson was. All of that changed when I discovered Ayreon thanks to a youtube playlist. Thank you Arjen, for bringing so much incredible talent together for your amazing projects. My copies of Space Metal and Transitus arrived recently, and I can't wait to get the rest of your discography!
I really wish Damian sung more on Ayreon albums. The warmth and power of his voice lends itself so well to Ayreon songs.
I was obsessed with this album when it came out, I was in tears with the emotions it stirred and hearing Jasper's voice for the first time was amazing, felt like Freddy Mercy was at the helm! When I saw this video I was excited to see him live but I was just as excited and surprised to see Damian walk out! He is the only one that could have done this track Justice, I'm in tears after seeing it, amazing.
I wanted to fly from the Western USA to see this so bad but could not make it happen, if you read this Ayreon you have affected and changed myself and many of my friends life for the better though your music projects, there's nothing in the world like it. I remember when star one came out and my friend was thrilled to show me what space metal was (I mean, we just discovered fantasy metal through Blind Guardian and Rhapsody, these were amazing times!) and it's been an obsession ever since. I think that the production value deserves a nod. It's not easy to make a song sound so perfect.
After the album was done i expected the concert to end, i completely forgot the ''other tales'' part.
When this came on i was so happy, never thought i'd hear it live.

This song helped me so much. There was a time in my life where I failed at something and I was so, SO hard on myself. I wouldn't forgive myself and the lyrics of this song is exactly what it felt like.

Damian Wilson is superb, and Arjen did an artful job of utilizing Damian's vocal range and depth. So different and absorbing, both in actual performance and in contemplating lyrics.

So many things done so well. Props to the sound person for a start, great synergy from the musicians, the more impressive because this is an almost one-off gig, great twiddly guitar bits, and of course fine performances from Damien, Marcela, Dianne, and Jan. The overall effect was masterful: better than the album version.

This is such an incredible rendition. Damian's voice is powerful and he really made this song his own, but more than that there's a joy to being on stage behind it that makes it that much more special. It's rare to get this much passion behind a song -- smile every time I hear this.

This may very well be Damian Wilson's best live performance ever, at least of an Arjen project song. Especially that part at the end: "Burn the stars out, one by oooonnnnnnnnneeeee!" Simply amazing, and it wasn't even written for him to sing. He also owned "Into The Black Hole" during the Star One "Live on Earth" performances (my previous favorite performance from him, now moved to second place by this song).
