A 5e Guide for Sorcerer Warlock Multiclassing
With the innate power in a sorcerer’s bloodline combined with a warlock’s bargained powers, sorlocks (sorcerer/warlocks) are overflowing with magic. Sorlocks are one of the classic power builds in dungeons and dragons 5e and they're still likely the most popular character build for their sheer damage output and obscene nova damage potential. If you want a character that’s a magical damage machine gun then max out that Charisma stat as we head into the dungeon and go through everything you need to know.

I main a Shadow Sorlock, Tiefling, and Shadow Monk, Swiftstride. With my Sorlock, I've never taken Devil's Sight as Eye of the Dark adds 60 ft of darkvision and allows you to see through your own darkness if cast with sorcery points. She's 17 sorcerer/3 warlock and I went Shadow Fiend. Because she was my first sorcerer build, and I didn't know what I was doing, I put my highest stats in Charisma and Intelligence. Both scores are at 20 with Dex and Con at 16. We rolled for stats and then founds tomes and other magical items to increase stats along the way. I took Alert, Tough, Durable, and Spell Sniper. Eldritch Invocations were Eldritch Spear and Agonizing Blast. Six hundred feet of Eldritch Blast causes absolute chaos. Put a bit of Darkness around myself and my party can sit back and relax unless someone gets lucky. Though, with Shadow Walk, very few creatures get lucky.
Sorlock's name is Poison and she's a Noble. Shadow Monk's name is Kira, and she is not a Noble. The first time these two met is a whole story in of itself.

Personally the biggest temptation is that third level of warlock. Not only could you pick pact of the chain which allows for an invisible quaist scout and a target for dragon's breath spell; You would gain two level two spells slots for sorcery point fuel. Going path of the divine would allow you to gain cleric spell slots as well, but I chose to specialize. The biggest thing I've come to realize, is that even if you are going to power game... It's best not to step on the toes of other players. Everyone wants to feel unique or important. If you can do everything, then that takes away the shine from them. I just want to blow stuff up, not be greedy. I also chose a different invocation for my second spot. I went with unlimited disguise self. It really intrigued me and I built a character around that aspect. Not necessarily optimal, but definitely fits my character. There's this balance that is challenging to do. The balance between wanting to do really well, follow along the theme of your character and work together as a team by allowing your teammates to fill their own respective roles. That's my take on it at least. What do you think?

I'm building this character with a fairy race in WbtW. I chose fairy so that I could fly above the party before casting darkness on myself to gain advantage on my shots due to the 'Unseen attacker' rule. That way I dont give disadvantage to my party. I also went with the clockwork sorcerer to make use of its level 1 ability to disregard the advantage/disadvantage of someone I can see within 60ft. If for whatever reason an attacker is able go get advantage on attacking me in my bubble of darkness, I can use this ability to remove that advantage.

As a variant human getting metamagic adept you could get the build online a bit earlier and have more versatility at lvl 5. Now I agree agonizing blast is a must imo repelling blast is just as good. That forced movement which stacks by raw (unless your DM is a coward) breaks grapples and honestly makes eldritch blast feel more awesome. Like iron man's blasts in the movies plus the rare moments you can knock somebody off a cliff, roof or ship make it the best choice

Divine Soul Sorlock can be played as the 'ultiamte' teammate, twinning haste and other buffs and spending a lot of time letting the others shine.
Even though it's a min/max build, it and a paladin/hexblade always end up being the most fun since you can really help out your crew.

I have actually played/am playing a sorlock. I went with sorc first and went from 1-5 sorc, then 3 levels of hexblade, and the rest will be sorc. I am currently divine soul 12/hexblade 3. And as luck would have it, I went with scourge aasimar even though supposedly half drow is "best". I decided to go with pack of the tome for more versatility, especially since our wizard decided to join the navy IRL. It has been a 'blast' to play. (hahaha warlock...blast..) Of course after I chose tome, my DM gave me a +2 Longsword of Vengeance with an extra 1d6 radiant damage... lol After that I took booming blade and green flame blade since baddies like to rush her (my sorlock.)

So, one thing I had a lot of fun role playing was my sorlock which was a divine soul sorcerer crossed with a celestial warlock. The characters background was that the divine soul sorcerer was going to die, and offered his body to be the vessel for a celestial who wanted to have a presence on the mortal plane of existence hence the warlock levels.

As for Races, I find that the Winged Tiefling works perhaps just as, if not more optimally, than others because of their ability to fly in medium armor. Being able to conduct non-concentration aerial warfare at will is decent enough, but doing it with a Winged Tiefling is hilarious.
As for a desired Sorcerer subclass, I think it depends on what you're going for. For a Coffeelock or Cocainelock, DSS (Divine Soul) or Clockwork Soul easily get the job done. An argument can also be made for the Celestial Pact Warlock, but that also depends on if the PC wants to fit into a "triage healer" role.
Elsewise, I'm currently looking at the Aberrant Mind Sorcerer as a possible dip, from Hexblade. I'd be curious to hear if anyone else has done it, and hear what their ups/downs were, especially with a Winged Tiefling.

Played a half elven hexblade with aberrant mind sorcerer and elven accuracy. Lots of fun and durable. From level 8/9 greater invisibility makes for fun crit hunting even if that is not optimal. Before that also have magic missile + hexblade curse, Quickened earthen Grasp + eldritch blast, Booming blade with quickened dissonant whispers. And just general sorcerer and warlock fun. I went for Eldritch Mind for the second eldritch invocation as the darkness combo can be too limiting for the party and I want to ensure keeping concentration and left ASI open instead of warcaster as calculated only 3 ASI at max. Disagree with max Dex as 14 gives max armor with Hexblade, so for me it is Charisma and then Con for health and concentration. Also would always do level 1 Sorcerer, you won't be there long and you get better saving throw proficiency in concentration. Unless you plan in resilient Con as an ASI early, but there are better options.

I am currently trying to convince my one DM to let me make a few alterations to my Warlock. One i want to change my race to Half-Elven/Hexblood which fits my Haunted one (raised by a hag) background incredibly well. Secondly i have the idea that my starting class should have been Sorceror to better Fit the raised by a Hag History, Going with the option of Shadow Magic. Thirdly i would then add my Warlock Hexblade into the mix (currently a 5th level Hexblade single class).
for reference we are playing in the World of Exandria from Critical roll (specifically Wildemount), initially we started with 2 Characters due to much of the group being stuck working on game day. I went with the Hexblade for the Melee combat skill, while the other player went with a Tabaxi Ranger focusing on Long Range bow attacks. However in our second adventure our DM added 2 characters to round out the group, a Rogue and a Cleric, giving our 2 players now 2 characters each to play.
Due to some actions our Ranger Picked up Barbarian due to his anger over his families death, and our Rogue became a Cleric of the Raven Queen as well. both of these characters are under the other players control (personally the Rogue was required to either take paladin or cleric and i would have taken the Paladin over cleric). a couple more sessions seen our dm offering the other player to make alterations to his Tabaxi ranger, allowing him to either alter both his race and/or Class. he kept the race unchanged but if i remember right her changed his class levels in barbarian and ranger.
In control of the Cleric and my original Warlock i dont plan to Multiclass the Cleric except maybe with a couple level of fighter at most, for action surge and a fighting style. But for my Warlock i want to reskin her to fit my character concept a little better. so dropping a level of Warlock (or picking up a level of Shadow Sorceror next level to fit my background and theme would be nice). Ideally my DM would offer the same changes to my character that he allowed the other player.
This however may be a little more difficult than it might initially seem. as my dm for this campaign has house ruled a few things that Critical Roll also does such as rapid potion drinking, and the option of 2 spells under level 3 to be cast simultaneously. which i used to good effect in our last session to destroy a CR:9 bone devil in about 3 rounds (to the shock of my DM AND the other Player), so i can see this option being removed next session (lol).
and unlike some people who want to Sorlock to aim for the infinite spell slot Cheese method i dont plan to use such an option, leaving my warlock spell slots only for warlock spells or to fuel damage with the weapon Cursebringer which i did convince him to let me grab using my 4th level feat to take Eldritch Adept, and at 5th level i picked up Thirsting Blade.
My Plan is however to use her Sorceror (Shadow Magic) as the awakening of the powers of her Hag born gifts (since Hexblood girls can be turned into Hags themselves), though she isn't a fan of being turned into a hag herself, my character has a tie to some being of fate as well having made some kind of Pact (Hexblade Warlock), and is seeking a way to both retain her limited Gifts but also return her "Auntie" who raised her back into her former Non-Hag self. I dont plan to take warlock past lvl 5 and yes i know this robs me of the 9th level spell slot and a few other awesome hexblade features, having more versatility with those 6th 7th and 8th level spell slots is just too tempting to pass up. We are also using the "Theme Magic" for the archetypes which offer additional spells for selection even with the warlock. so my Hexblade currently has the Hexblade spells as free spells gifted by his patron rather than having to select them separately. Now if only WoTC would retcon the Sorceror Subclasses spell lists to take advantage of theme spells for the Subclasses presented before Tasha's like they did with Aberrant Mind and Clockwork sorceror things would be a lot better.

I don't understand why you're so keyed on DEX when you're also so keyed on the Hexblade warlock. Medium armor only allows a max of +2 DEX bonus, so a DEX over 14 is honestly just wasted stat points. Better to maximize your CON.
I'm also surprised you didn't mention the Aberrant Mind or Clockwork Soul sorcerers; their bonus spells give them more spell selection options than wizards get. Besides, both of these classes get a summoning option as a bonus spell, something sorcerers simply do not usually get.
As far as Metamagic is concerned, my go-to metamagic option these days is Subtle Spell. Not being counterspelled because nobody can tell you're *CASTING* a spell until it's already been cast is just tasty as hell. Besides, it's dirt cheap on Sorcery Points, unlike Twinned Spell ... which can get *very expensive* for higher-level spells. Besides, it can be really fun and really useful from a role play perspective.
Finally, while getting the best Concentration save possible is important, I think it's a mistake to so completely ignore WIS saves. They might not be as common as CON saves, particularly when you're a spellcaster, but failing one can be DEVASTATING. Therefore, I'm pretty sure Resilient/Wisdom should have a place on important (maybe even critical) Feats to take with this build if you're not starting out with warlock. Likewise with Resilient/Constitution if you're not starting out with sorcerer.
Overall this is a decent breakdown, though again, the fascination with maximizing DEX is a mistake.

The interesting part in relation to this video is I don't have Eldritch Blast, instead I have a non-scaling incantation version of Bane (over coming being born cursed is a big part of my back story. My Satyr instrument is tuning forks and they are my patron.). So I was planning on using things like armor of agathys, expeditious retreat, misty step, hold person to be a good tanky goat and have flexibility in controlling space. The idea of adding sorcerer spell slots in the mix and having access to the cleric spell book sounds incredible. My next level I was planning on going level 5 warlock and pick up vampiric touch. I might still do that, 3rd level spell slot and Devil's Sight sound pretty useful for my pivot.

I thought about making a sorlock with 10 lvl Warlock (hexblade) and 6 Draconic heritage Sorcerer. Reasons are the riddiculous good Hex-Armor and the additional Cha-mod dmg for your eldrich blast. Yes you loose highlvl spells, but i love consistancy. Also for the last 4 lvls... maybe fighter for Action Surge Nova.
(result would be 4 Eldrich blasts with 4 beams each. +Cha-dmg (better beam, +Proficiancy (hexcurse)+ Another Cha-mod(draconic heritage lvl6)
Math 16 flat bonusdmg +1d10 (averange 6) so around 22 in total. Times 4 (4 beams ber eldrich blast) is 88 dmg. Times 4 (Action surge and quickened twice) is 352dmg if everything hits noncrit.
All while having decent Armor, levitating in the sky while having a 50% chance to turn an Hit into a Miss. (Hex Armor)
On thing i dont understand however is why focusing so hard on Dex? With medium Armor we only add AC up to 14 dex? So why more?

I disagree with the whole notion of Dex being your second most important stat...
Hexblade gives medium armor proficiency, so 14 dex is all you really need.
If you find initiative to be important, then just use the next ASI on the Alert feat...
Wisdom saves will probably be more critical than dex saves which can be mitigated with spells (like absorb elements or featherfall).
Constitution is also more important than dex, just looking at the importance of concentration checks alone.

It's a negative, and one many players don't realize and get frustrated when the use it without caution, but... it's still a worth it if you know it's limitations.
      1. It's still a heck of a "get out of jail free" card. If the fight is going badly, no one is going to complain if you put it up on the party for a couple of rounds while they heal, drink potions, cast defensive spells, retreat back, etc.
      2. It isn't bad if you use it solely for your defense and stay more than 15 feet from the party. Stay back and blast. Most players don't mind that.
      3. It isn't bad if you are a melee-type (pact of the blade) and use it split enemy groups up. Rush into melee, cast it, and then the other players deal with those outside the darkness. If you need to block a bridge, etc.
      4. If your party is prepared you can use tactics so that you aren't nerfing them so badly. Such as when you cast darkness, everyone readies, on your turn you cover the darkness -- they all shoot/cast, and you then uncover it. Or you rush forward, use it, and they all ready attacks to attack creatures leaving the darkness.
      5. Obviously if you are alone, on guard duty, sneak missions, etc. I.e. use it more for utility.
For #1 it is often so good that it's worth keeping. I've had characters who have had it and rarely use it. However, when I've had to... maybe around 9th you can swap it out.

@@BW022 While these are clever, this requires communication and planning with your party to get around the spell because it is an obstacle.
In other words - it's not a go to spell, it's one that requires thought and planning.

I’m currently playing a Sorlock Gish named Angel, a schizophrenic ex-detective-turned-conspiracy theorist/political assassin. He’s been one of my best characters I’ve written!
The build uses the typical Hexblade + Shadow but I took Hexblade to 5 and sorcerer the rest of the way. My main strat is making two attacks with a scythe (reflavored glaive) and using metamagic to quicken booming blade or GFB while having spiritshroud up!
Went var. human for con resilience as I started on warlock for WIS saves and to start with a weapon prof. But our DM also had us start with a free feat so I took tough to get good frontline hp. I’m spending my ASIs on bumping charisma and eventually con but war caster is on the horizon once those are squared away.
And spirit shroud on a reaper looking mofo with hexblade and shadow just screams the new Final Fantasy XIV reaper in its super form! You even get a familiar (kind of) with the shadow hound! You could even reflavor it as being the manifestation of your patron or it’s guard dogs!
I may at some point revisit Sorlock for a pure caster build and have looked at the Celestial Divine Soul in the past as a promising healer & buffer with good damage still baked in!
Either that or doing some sort of ultimate psychic build. Warlock gives a better universal telepathy with no action usage and the usual warlock slots while sorcerer gets so many good bits on top of having the most flexible sorcerer spell list next to Divine souls along with the greatest number of spells known for a sorcerer side-by-side with the clockwork!
Plus the flavor is amazing! You were touched by the far realm and at some point you learn to tap into just a bit of extra potential by taking it directly from the stars!

15:25 what do you mean devils sight let’s you see through any darkness, just not your own. Devils sight allows you to see normally in darkness, both magical and nonmagical, to a distance of 120 feet. doesn’t say anything about not seeing through your own.
In fact, devils sight makes me not want to take shadow, since I can just cast darkness with a lvl 2 slot, and go maybe clockwork soul to get more spell options

      Hexblade swordbard.
1 or 2 levels in hexblade warlock,
      Then all other in swordbard.
Your fighting style is defensive, so longsword and shield.
      Str 8, dex 14, con 15, int 8, wis 10 cha 15
Hexblood as interesting race and free hex spellslot leaves room to take another warlock spell then hex,
      Or
Variant human for the extra feat at lvl 1, allert is a good feat, or Fey touched charisma for misty step
Eithet way both get 2 plus 1's in a skill, so cha and con to push them to 16
Playstyle is hex 1 opponent and kill it,
Becouse of hexblade charisma is your weapon modifier, the 14 dex is just to wear medium armor
For the rest you have bard flourish attacks, and nice healing if you have dumb party members and a lot of extra bard goodies

Good effort and at a "normal" table this will work fine. tho should you venture into a game that plays 6-8 encounters with some difficulty this type of build will suffer. I can't, in good faith, recommend Hex or darkness. Concentration Spells like web are just too effective at keeping your party alive at harder tables. Hex-clock is a better and well rounded control caster. they have access to the best control spells like wall of force with nova damage at your fingertips.

Sorlocks excel in dungeon crawls. They have a fantastic resource free option and they are full spellcasters that get back a few spell slots on short rests.

Why would I nearly allways ban a sorclock? Becouse one player doing everything makes the other players feel useless.
I would have to specifically counter the build so everyone else has a use.
If I just crank the CR then everybody but the sorclock just dies.

Sorlocks are really nice utility classes with reliable damage output. The downside is the squishiness of the sorcerer dice - they will have far less than a warlock or bard, so if they do get hit it is usually painful.
The other situation is how many levels of each class you take. 3 warlock gives you either chain, tome or blade. For pure magic this would be either chain to let us use touch spells via our familiar, or tome for bonus cantrips. 4 warlock gives an ASI/ Feat. 5 warlock gives 3rd level spells and another invocation.
It all depends on the preference.

Sorlocks are below average compared to almost any dps build at an optimized table. A gwm melee martial or sharpshooter Archer does better consistent damage. Burat damage build do better burst damage.
      Full casters cast better.
Sorlocks lose a bit of spell progression so they can have a decent dps to fall back on when spell slots aren't needed.
They are not overpowered in any one way.
