    This is a famous combo, not one I made up!
    1. Use all Sorcery Points to generate temporary spell slots.
    2. Use all Warlock spell slots to generate more sorcery points!
    3. Take a short rest.
    4. Repeat steps 1-3, building more and more temporary spell slots. Never take a long rest (RAW you don't have to). Enjoy!
    (There is an optional rule Wizards of the Coast added in Xanathar's Guide to Everything that adds levels of exhaustion when you don't long rest. It's up to your DM whether they add it to the game, but it does make this combo harder, as you then need to burn some spells on Greater Restoration each day to remove your exhaustion!)

    • @loganfrandrup6590
      @loganfrandrup6590 2 ปีที่แล้ว +80

      Hate to be that guy, but I found one problem with that.
      Xanathar's PG 78, Going Without a Long Rest
      It states that if you do not long rest after 24 hours, you could actually get exaughested. As far as I can tell, it says nothing about "going 24 hours without Sleep" specificaly.
      From what can tell, and this might be my interpertation of the rule, but that means that you still need to gain the benifits of a long rest if you don't want to make Con saves.
      Just becuase you don't need to sleep dosen't mean that your mental state doesn't need to wind down.

    • @lymbasluchs
      @lymbasluchs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      @@loganfrandrup6590 The problem I have with this ruling is, that taking 8 short rest, consisting of nothing but light activity are basically the same as a long rest without sleep, consisting of only light activity.

      Aspect of the moon removes the need to sleep, but not the need to take long rests. As stated in XGtE, you gain exhaustion levels from !not taking long rests!, not by not sleeping.
      So I am sad to say that this combo does not work anymore and has been fixed.

You will never gain access to 8th or 9th level spell, but you will have nearly infinite 5th level spells to cast every turn, and can cast TWO of them every turn...
    Cast Dominate Person or Dominate Beast every turn until you succeed as the Archfey. Upcast Fireball for 10d6 fire damage every turn as the Fiend. Cast Flame Strike every turn for 8d6+5 radiant and fire damage every turn as the Celestial, or upcast Cure Wounds for 5d8+5 healing every turn, or cast Guardian of Faith every turn for a wall of guardians, or upcast Guiding Bolt every turn for 8d6+5 radiant damage every turn with advantage. Cast Cone of Cold or Banishing Smite every turn as the Hexblade. Upcast Lightning Bolt every turn for 10d6 lightning damage every turn as the Fathomless. OR, cast anything you want every turn as the Genie, you won't gain access the Wish spell though...

      Additionally, you're screwed if the DM calls bullshit on the invocation, which I certainly would - it'd interpret that as meaning that you effectively got a long rest, if you did eight hours of "short resting", and you have to either take all all of the effects (ie hit points, hit dice and spell slots/sorcery points), or none at all.

    This is kinda weird, because in 2015 a sage compendium came out iin light of Elves ignoring sleep. In that sage compendium, it was written that "sleep" and "holding a long rest" are not the same. A long rest is 6 hours of sleep and 2 hours of idle activity, where any feature that removes or replaces sleep, must still be filled with idle activity to fill the whole 8 hour gap. The dmg and xanathars RAW says that if you ignore a long rest, you must make a DC 10 constitution save or suffer one level of exhaustion.
    So no, ignoring the need to sleep does not equate ignoring the need to hold a long rest. You're just not unaware/unconcious for 6 hours.
    Also, you cannot have more sorcery points at any moment equal to your sorcerer level.

    • @Knuffeldraak
      @Knuffeldraak 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @cak01vej The gap already lies at "ignoring sleep". Sleep is not the determining factor whether you're suffering from exhaustion, it's a Long Rest that does.
      The sage's compendium released in 2018, few months after Xanathar's, that fixed the earlier's compendium from 2015, clarifies this, stating that 'Sleep' is not the same as a 'Long Rest'. Independency to Sleep solely means you won't be unconcious for 6 hours, but you STILL need 8 hours of light/idle activity without having to make a DC 10 Constitution save to prevent exhaustion.

    • @Knuffeldraak
      @Knuffeldraak 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @cak01vej Yes, by the point you hit level 9 Sorc + Lvl 1 Warlock, you absolutely can do it that way.
      Though... Sorcerers don't get access to Greater Restoration, so you'd need an outside source or a different multiclass into 9th level for that. And that also costs 100 gold EVERY time you want to do this loop.

    • @Knuffeldraak
      @Knuffeldraak 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @cak01vej My bad, didn't know Divine Soul added cleric spells for you. Though, my main point is that it's not 'as infinite', since there's a (semi-)recurring upkeep cost that taxes you every time you want to do it.

    • @Knuffeldraak
      @Knuffeldraak 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @cak01vej Actually, I got to correct myself. The DC is 15, not 10, and it goes up by 5 after each consecutive night.

    • @Knuffeldraak
      @Knuffeldraak 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @cak01vej This is from the sage's compendium close after XGE; "Going for more than 24 hours without completing a long rest, you have to succeed on a DC 15 Constitution (CON) save or take a level of Exhaustion. The DC goes up by 5 for every consecutive time you do this in a row"
      Sage Compendiums aren't exactly optional rules though.

  • @arfived4
    @arfived4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

    I've always considered these "seems great in theory, awful in practice".
    You're going to need to sink 3 levels of Warlock into this to get the invocation, and in my experience, Pact Magic/Spellcasting multiclassing (beyond the odd level) pretty much means that you spend your turn deciding whether you're going to act as an underpowered Warlock, or as an underpowered spellcaster, compared to the rest of your party. 3 levels of Warlock in a multiclass puts you puts one spell level behind a single-class spellcaster of the same level, so a 9 Sorceror/3 Warlock in a level 12 party has access to level 5 spells only, while a 12 Sorceror has access to level 6 spells.
    Secondly, the "infinite spell slots" thing only really works if you never actually do anything. If you actually burn them off (as you will be doing pretty much constantly in any game), then you'll almost certainly be burning them, and your sorcery points, off at a rate in excess of that with which you're gaining Warlock spell slots on short rests.
    Thirdly, no long rests means no recovery of hit points, no recovery of hit dice, and no rest on per-long-rest abilities. You may have infinate spell slots, but you're also costing a hell of a lot in potions, or leaching the abilities of your cleric/druid/bard/whatever to keep you from dying.*
    *as a DM, I would consider that the invocation's "benefits of a long rest" to include everything that you normally recieve on a long rest, ie resetting your spell slots and sorcery points to their designated levels.

    • @khango6138
      @khango6138 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I was thinking this too, "Infinite spell slots, but at what level?". Also, while the coffeelock may not need long rest, the rest of the party will still need to take long rests anyway, sooo it's kinda pointless for the coffeelock to not also take long rests with them, defeating the purpose.

    • @arfived4
      @arfived4 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@khango6138 The general theory with most coffeelock builds, is that the coffeelock hangs around while the others take a long rest, either taking 4 short rests in the same time period, or pulling the "eight hours of unstrenuous activity" detailed in the invocation for this one, but never ACTUALLY "taking a long rest" in the conventional sense, by sleeping, or whatever.
      It also requires the DM to accept that regaining your spell slots are NOT "a benefit of a long rest" for this version to work, which would totally get the nopehammer from me, and I'm normally totally in favour of clever rules combinations.

    • @j.c.cannon2112
      @j.c.cannon2112 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      kind of, but you would have access to low level healing spells for yourself, and a theoretically infinite amount of them, so recovering hit points wouldn't be an issue after you get a large buffer of sorcery points. plus asking for a healing spell right before your companions take a long rest (and get the spell slot back anyway) isn't an issue. a lot of campaigns will have small time skips of a few weeks in which characters can say they trained, studied, crafted items or whatever else. doing this would give you more than enough points to be good for several sessions. the jump in power between 5th level and 6th level spells isn't all that great, I don't know if I would go as far to get the 5th level. stopping at 3rd and using them as basically cantrips while taking the rest of your levels in warlock or another class sounds like a better play.

      @grey8288 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Minimum 5 levels total (the invocation doesn't work as suggested in this video, it's not necessary for the build): warlock 2 sorcerer 3. Warlocks typically primarily lean on eldritch blast, so with 2 levels in warlock you'll be doing pretty good until you hit sorcerer 3. Regardless of spell slots, eldritch blast with agonizing blast is a pretty darn good fallback, not to mention the fact that you'll probably have a number of other useful cantrips at your disposal after you multiclass.
      This build doesn't work as described in the short, it isn't quite "infinite", but it's still pretty beefy at just level 5 and only gets better from there. You can still have far more "spell slots" than most casters at your level, and it doesn't start dropping behind in power much until tier 3, but at that point the spells you chose matter more for the build itself.
      Tbh, this build is best for spamming eldritch blast 2x/round with the right invocations, not for "infinite" spell slots, but that's me. It only needs 2 levels of warlock and the rest in sorcerer and scales well.

The two classes and subclasses synergize really well, letting you prioritize utility with spells while also having access to good damage with almost no need to use EB. @@artsmith1111 That's fair. I think there are two schools of thought on this: a) The sorcerer can only metamagically manipulate sorcerer spells, or b) the sorcerer can metamagically manipulate any magical ability. Personally, I like the idea that sorcerers have a unique relationship with their magic. As a result of that unique relationship, any magic you receive becomes more versatile and fluid. This gives you the ability to metamagically tamper with your own magical gifts - regardless of where they came from. Just like a Wizard can uniquely learn new spells from books, a Sorcerer is uniquely capable of tinkering with their own magical essence - and this makes them uniquely qualified to dissect the strange, unfathomable gifts granted by their patron.

    DM said I can have a little spell slots as a treat.

    You can take this even further by picking the Genie patron and going up to 10th level, gaining the benefits of a short rest by spending 10 minutes in your vessel. Now you can be in top form 24/7 by having your familar carry your vessle as you travel

    The aspect of the moon does not remove the need to rest. Only the need to spend part of a long rest sleeping.

  • @Sarge1886
    @Sarge1886 ปีที่แล้ว

    The counter to this is that, while you may not need anymore, your body still needs actual rest and eventually an hour long power nap ain’t going to cut it. Your body is going to get that rest weather you like it or not

    I'm gonna ruin someone's day.... Aspect of the Moon says you don't need sleep, but also lists what you need to benefit from a long rest. You will still get exhaustion for not taking a long rest.

    This is especially easy to pull off with gritty/slow recovery games where they don't let long rests happen outside of towns. Best milk it for all its worth!
    And it only takes Divine Soul Sorcerer or any Cleric/Druid dip to use those temporary slots on healing.

    Aspect of the Moon eliminates the need to sleep not the need to long rest. Regardless of how you would rule on exhaustion -x- sleep, if a character is in need of recovering hit dice or long rest abilities, they will need to long rest even if they don't need to sleep. Spend your downtime between adventures generating spell slots lol.

    Add on that depending on your DM's ruling you can gain all spell slots, sorcerer and warlock on a short rest and this gets insane

    Sleeping is different from taking a long rest. Sleep is an activity you can perform while taking a long rest, but you can long rest without sleeping. Additionally, the rules say you must take at least one long rest every 24 hours or risk gaining exhaustion, not sleep at least 8 hours out of every 24 or risk gaining exhaustion.
