I read a lot of responses in the feed and decided to respond on this one , because I can totally agree with what is said here. I am a white guy who thinks Thomas Sewell is a national treasure for his intelligence. I wish more Americans would read his works, or at least listen to him on utube. He gives facts on issues. Which is missing from what is being taught in schools. No matter what the truth is people need to hear truth instead of convenient myths, to hide what was done.

That is not remotely as clear as you intended, in fact it's more easily read to mean the opposite of what you meant. Cause bro is sounds like you're saying we're so poor it's impossible for most people to be this poor.

Percentage wise, 8.6% of White Americans live in poverty, compared to 17.1% of Black Americans. Numbers wise, 17 million White Americans line in poverty compared to 7.2 million Black Americans.
There are a lot more White Americans who are broke than there are Black Americans. It's not a competition and there is nothing to win, but just going by percentages it gives a skewed view. The reality is that for every Black American living in poverty, there are 2.5 White Americans. Poverty is not something exclusive to any one race.

This practice I’m sure still exists and many companies ignore it

I have never in my life had spinners or taken a payday loan. I started saving at six, as comical as saving a few pennies a week was. Cut grass, took out trash by the time I was ten. By eleven I discovered the peach and pecan Grove farmers were willing to pay a dollar a tail for squirrels, and I took my beagle & 22 rifle & started making actual money. My best day was 180 tails. The farmer came out to observe the next day to make sure I wasn't cheating.
At twelve my parents gave me an apple computer as a reward, and a single share of apple stock in 1981. Mom "if you buy a company's products, and would again, buy their stock.". Very simple philosophy and works pretty well. All of my squirrel tail and later programming money went into Apple, Microsoft after 1986, Intel and amd.
AND today I have a full time job. I don't have to. My retirement was fixed in the early 2000's. I drive a humble car, though I have had a couple Porsches over the years, always used, always great bargains. And in July I take my delivery of a model 3 performance. The first new performance car I've ever bought.
The VAST majority of of people, really everyone except my Father, have not the slightest clue what my net worth is even close to.

If you have an internal locus of control, i.e. believe you are in the driver's seat of your life, you have much higher rate of success. If you have an external locus of control, i.e. you believe things outside you drive your life, you'll generally struggle as you blame society, your boss, your parents, etc.

He gets to his conclusions by sifting and re-sifting facts until the facts reveal their own relationships and the truth speaks for itself. He doesn't get to conclusions through ideology. He's a really incredible teacher of objectivity. I wish every American would read his best books. They teach you to think about the world of fact, and get out of the world of ideology, surface judgements, emotional bias, and all that.

There were 200,000,000 motor vehicles in the United States in 1995. Where did the depreciation go? When do you ever hear American economists say anything about what consumers lose on Depreciation?

Im from Australia and last year we had a referendum, called the Voice, where the indigenous claimed that their skin colour and colonialism was the reason for disparity in outcomes. I was trying to push the words and quotes of Thomas Sewell and was ridiculed. The indigenous population would go nuts to hear him call them "stone age" "backwards due to isolation" and "hadn't discovered iron even though they sat on large deposits of iron ore." Thomas Sewell can get away with saying those things, but when I suggested these things i was called a racist and told Im ignorant.... 🤦‍♂️

    • @ThaMassDebater
      @ThaMassDebater 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

@-whackd the response from the indigenous population is that they didn't need the wheel. There weren't any large animals to domesticate and put wagons onto and they didn't have material possessions that they needed to transport. They were nomadic and didn't need to move large rocks to build permanent structures. Apparently they didn't need the wheel or written language or the need for iron tools. And they wonder why there is a discrepancy in outcomes and blame it on colonisation when its clear that even before a white man set foot on Australia, there was a vast gap in the technological and social structures between the two cultures. If you listen to the indigenous population they lived a utopian dream until the white man came with their wheel and language and food preservation methods and permanent structures and social structures that allows all to share in the commonwealth. And that would be true if you ignored the fact that the indigenous Australians are also migrants who set up colonies and murdered raped and plundered other indigenous nations before the arrival of the white man. Why is the finger being pointed at the white man for repairations when the indigenous population engaged in the same actions against each other?

There is a side to this conversation that isn't really relevant but I think is worth observing. I have seen many baby boomers attain a good life and wealth. However if their kids didn't have to struggle and EARN something (especially self respect) they also never learned how to appreciate and manage that wealth they inherited. History is full of extremely wealthy families that had kids that eventually ruined everything given to them. We all truly need to earn our way though life.

If you are young, it is all about habits and not being foolish with your money. You don't have to make a million dollars to be one a multimillionaire, but it will take 20 to 30 years of discipline.

I am a white woman, and an independent voter. I grew up in extreme poverty in Idaho. We lived in a broken down house with holes in the floors, walls, and ceiling. We had no running water, no electricity, and no heating. The winteres were brutal. With 8 kids in the family we never had enough food and were often hungry. We didn't go to school. By the grace of God I taught myself to read, and educated myself and my younger siblings. Poverty is colorblind, and does not discriminate. I worked several jobs as a teenager to pull myself out of that poverty. All of my siblings worked to become successful adults, it was not easy but America is the hope that we can overcome the conditions we were born into. Its ignorant to assume that all white people are wealthy and have privilege. These young men give me hope that the propaganda machine of the democratic party is finally being seen for what it is. GOD BLESS AMERICA! "LAND OF THE FREE HOME OF THE BRAVE"

The idea behind the word "systemic" is to artfully justify the perpetual study of an issue without ever showing progress or even resolving it. Doing this allows them to "own" the issue; to be the authority on the issue, and with that authority, become the authors of new manufactured issues.

It is never “smarter” to rent a home when buying a home is equally viable. The people who say they would rather rent than buy a home, even when the economy is favorable to homeownership, are simply afraid of the increased responsibility.

Or do not have a good track record of stable income. You can be living in a good economy and still be jumping from job to job because of skill or health factors (or other externals). Not everyone is a stable employee so a lot of people don't have the confidence of keeping up with payments on a house for 20-35 years. I pitty the people who bought in NYC or LA and have to live in the post pandemic times of debauchery and inflation.

Buying property is a big financial risk which can be affected by so many circumstances beyond your control. Each person has to weigh up the risks and make a personal decision. When I hear of all the homeowners who are now living in tents on the street, people’s paid up homes being sold from under them by HOAs and scammers, losing their homes because they can’t afford the land taxes charged by the government, I don’t blame people for choosing to rent.

I agree with that 100%, I rented for 10 years before buying my first house (saving pennies for a down payment). You figure what you're paying for rent (that's your mortgage), then buy the littlest house you can in the best neighborhood you can find that little house in. Take care of it. It will appreciate. A few years, maybe 10, later, you sell and move up. Rinse and repeat. Then put every cent into getting rid of your mortgage. Bingo, you're sailing into old age with a lovely paid-off home (which means all your retirement money is yours). That, my friends, is how it is done. If you rent all your life, you'll still be renting when you die with zero to show for it.

Ok, if leaving an inheritance for your children is of prime importance to you, then fine, but unfortunately these things don’t always end up helping our children in the end. It’s not guaranteed. Our parents/grandparents generation felt they could rely on having a steady job for the same company for most of their lives, but sadly those days are gone.
