They’re getting close to the real issues. White cap guy said we don’t need more rappers, we need to raise up black people doing things like work a nine to five. He’s almost asking the right questions.
Why are those rappers pushed by the labels? Guys praising violence and murder, calling women bitches, n word every other line, drugs drugs drugs. These people are glorified by ghetto culture.
George Floyd becomes a hero cuz the media said so. Reality is Floyd was a drug addicted criminal loser who was always gonna die a violent death related to drugs and crime.
Race baiters like Al Sharpton, Joy Reid, Barack Obama make millions by telling black people they’re victims. Somehow, they got rich, but tell you the white man is keeping all black people down. Obama made $30 million while he was president. Clinton made $42 million while he was president. They’ve both made many millions more after leaving the White House.
Ask the right questions. You’ll soon realize it’s all lies, corruption, and bullshit meant to keep black people poor and dependent on government.

As soon as you define yourself by your race you chain your value to something you personally cannot control. Nobody should carry the burden of representing a whole race. It is an impossible expectation. The white liberals goal to make blacks think they need to be united only hurts them. Whites are in no way united they are split 50/50 on almost every issue.

As an African who moved to the UK in 2006, I initially never saw myself as oppressed as I focused on the positives of being black, whilst some of my associates focused on oppression. Today most of them are behind bars, and I'm still growing to be the best version of myself.

King, we often speak of looking at The Lord in worship as "beholding" Him, an Old English term.

Also, I agree with you about these young men. They are doing a great job, and I love seeing them get a lot of views.
This country will get so much better if we can help all of our people in the rougher subcultures get past what's holding them back.
Sowell talks about it with whites and blacks, but I feel the Hispanics also have some as well, and probably some other groups that I don't even know about.
Overall, I just think it's awesome to see people working to make their lives better, because if they succeed..... they can make their families lives better and their communities better.... those are all wins, for everyone!

So true. Victim mentality is worse than a crutch, it's a cancer. We need to go back to MLK's teachings and focus on the charter of the person not the colour of the person's skin. Universities are segregating campuses based on race and this is seen as "empowering minorities". It's really depressing that we're regressing after all the strides to get past all that garbage. Young people need to put a stop to this because they have the reins.

I am a black womam who didn't grow up with black subculture. There isn't one black culture but it's always a stereotype and not indicative of everyone as a whole. How you are raised and where you are from frames that as well. My mom is black, and my father it turns out is biracial. My step-mother, who is white, helped raise me. I lived with my father. They were married in the late 60's. My father expected greatness. There was no victim mentality. I spoke standard English. I loved reading and my vocabulary is vast because I loved literature (especially Russian literature). I am successful and educated. There were no limitations placed in my consciousness and that makes a huge difference. Yet, in college, the black kids wouldn't speak to me because my white step-mother dropped me off and I was deemed--not being black enough. It hurt me deeply but I learned to just be myself and not care what they think. Foundation and mindset are crucial. I don't want other people making excuses for me or apologizing for my bad choices. Personal responsibility has left the building in the US and today's race issues are so skewed it's ridiculous and sometimes scary. I love Thomas Sowell. He exposes the truth and I'm proud these young men see it.

Every single one of these groups are the armpit of black America..uneducated , clueless and promote the worst things imaginable without caring one bit they are role models to the youth. It’s got to a point where political parties pay these “famous” blacks for them to promote their party and the kids will follow without a clue of what’s actually going on. It’s not their fault technically because it starts at home. 70% of these kids grow up in single home families , usually w no father and as they say, u don’t find a father at home u find him on the street ….

The culture we are surrounded with as we grow up has a huge influence. I am from London and in the UK right now white working-class boys have the worst educational outcomes, worse than Black British boys, worse than Nigerian immigrant boys (who usually do really well as Nigerian parents are notoriously strict and expect high grades), worse than all other males in other groups. This is because the white working class in the UK has devalued education and emphasized other ways to show masculinity for generations.
The class system in the UK, especially a few generations ago made it impossible for a working-class man to get a good education or rise in society so the expectations are just not there. Alternative ways have been adopted to achieve status. The cultural problems go down the generations. Racism definitely exists but the family who raises you and the environment you are surrounded by have a much greater impact. The UK currently has a Prime Minister of Indian descent and plenty of ministers in top positions who are from various immigrant nations. Their skin color and racial background didn’t hold them back, usually because they have a strong family who have high expectations. People rise or lower themselves to the expectations set for them a lot of the time. The answers are never simple but it’s very hard to resist the negative pressures from your peers if you don’t have strong role models protecting you, usually parents.

    • @Dedskees

@@viviennedunbar3374 yes, cultural influence plays such a huge part, I think the majority of racism we see in the US towards African-Americans stems from current black culture’s influence on the black community, where as if you look back to black culture in America during the early 1900s it featured stronger community and family values, values that would see black communities doing better in many metrics than their white counterparts, and unfortunately values that have fallen by the wayside as time has gone on, which I believe leads to most of our current issues.

    • @Dragonandturtle37
      @Dragonandturtle37 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Dedskees What would explain the far worse racism toward those black communities back in the early 1900s? Racism is what drives racism. Racist white people are racist against black people because they look for negative examples that feed into the stereotypes they already have. They look at anything negative that any dark-skinned person does and use it to perpetuate their narrative that black culture is criminal culture. They don’t see people as individuals. There are countless white criminals, but these white racists (who are far more common than people seem to think) can classify those people as outside the white culture, when they don’t offer the same courtesy to anyone that doesn’t look like them. What’s white culture? What’s black culture? Any definition you create only defines your preconceived notions.

Sowell rants against affirmative action while having gotten into Harvard based on affirmative action. He rails against welfare while having had the state pay for both his original career in the military and then paid for his education at Harvard.
The problem of course is not Sowell any more than it is with any 'intellectual', the problem is the governments that listen to them and the lack of lobbyists.
He constantly talks about the necessity of higher education, although lately what gets shown is the stuff where he tirades against colleges like the one that educated HIM. Without education you don't even stand a CHANCE in a modern technologically advanced society. You will be cleaning up behind somebody or serving somebody the rest of your days.
But his remarks about education get lost in the mix. Likewise he thinks that the welfare state should be replaced with a Guaranteed Income Supplement, this is something MOST people accept-its called 'old age security' and social security. The massive bloated bureaucracy he complains about, and yet NO liberal argues for bureaucracy, but for the same thing. A society that makes sure each person can live up to their potential, and help them out when they can't.
THOSE things get lost in the mix and instead are non ending conversations about political correctness and terminology. Thats the mark of not living in a democracy, people play NO part in the actual decision making, so you need to pretend that they are playing a part by endless pontificating.

"against colleges like the one that educated HIM"
Gee, it's almost like those institutions have changed since he was in them.
"Without education you don't even stand a CHANCE in a modern technologically advanced society."
I mean, that was true a millenia ago. The problem is that people seem to think that the only route to "education" is through the university system.
"Likewise he thinks that the welfare state should be replaced with a Guaranteed Income Supplement, this is something MOST people accept-its called 'old age security' and social security. "

@@cstgraphpads2091 He was a soldier with only middling marks as he admitted. He got into Harvard, you do the math.
Welfare is government doing shit IT DOESN"T NEED TO DO. A military is exactly that, in every war soldiers are brought on board and quickly trained and sent to war. There are countries with almost no military, one of which is now been fighting a major power for a year without one, and there are militaries that are essentially not in use, like Switzerland or Norway.
So thats the welfare state. Soldiers are trained for jobs that for the most part don't exist and WON"T exist, unless the state puts them into action, thats why early american libertarians were even against STATE rights becaues they said permanent militaries are the first sign of the welfare state.
Just becaues a country keeps starting wars doesn't change that fact, actually it proves it.
So what you call 'productive' is irrelevant. A single mother raising a child to YOU might not be 'productive', which is ironic because conservatives complain so much that women should at least be able to stay home with the children. But if there is no husband, suddenly that function is 'not productive'.
Sowell keeps on about these MOSTLY fictional 'just lazy people' who are supposedly collecting welfare while doing nothing, ironically the society has no problem using government to throw money at the owners of Raytheon, the owners of which have NEVER done any work for decades.
NOW the value of education is WAY beyond what it was in the past. The surest way to stay in poverty is to only have a high school education. You think you are going to be a doctor or engineer by saying "hey, I've read all the textbooks in my spare time at home". Good luck with that.
You can learn a TRADE without college, but that puts you at the mercy of that trade and essentially dictates where you can live. I know tons of welders, great skill to have but there are no jobs in it here.
I see you don't really get the gist of social security, the money you get out is WAY more than the money you put in, just like an RRSP in an institution is way more than what you put in, thats the whole point. Without social security the country would be a full on third world country.

After slavery ended many black Americans who were regarded citizens were still subjected to laws and customs of this country that denied them their rights with indignant treatment. Again European culture is the culture of rape murder and theft to gain their semblance of success. After slavery white culture endured people such as Billy the Kid and Jesse James who were murderers and robbers. After the crime wave of the post Civil War period white culture led to the rise of organized crime dominated by immigrant Irish Italians and Jews and others. We all have heard of the MOB and corrupt judges and politicians who represented a lawless culture. Thomas Sowell’s head is in the sand. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton are not race hustlers but advocates who are addressing issues to improve the lives of black Americans.

I've listen to many of his informal lectures and from the first time I heard him I was in awe at his level of wisedom. Too many people have high IQs in academia to memorize highly manipulated information derived from echo chambers, but no wisedom. This is why their so-called "experts" are often so horribly wrong in their predictions. Worse, it is incredibly dangerous, because unlike Professor Sowell, typical academia buys into the absolute fallacy that basic human nature can be altered (even worse, they think it can be altered through theory alone today!) No matter how hard someone tries, one can not erradicate selfishness, greed, envy, and so on, from human nature. When it is tried, it ALWAYS ends in utter disaster. This is where Prof. Sowell steps in and would say, we can't alter human nature, but we know when people have freedom, stability, and hope, they are more likely to be happier, better people, and act as good role models. Thus the right to life, liberty, and the persuit of happiness with boundaries ending where another's freedom begins, to which this is enforced though consent of the very people who enjoy those rights. Professor Sowell understood this well, which is why is really was an incredible man.

"Sowell’s arguments are, in the main, sophomoric in construction and ideologically resistant to intervention from the real world. Despite his bluster about Evidence and Facts that purportedly come to knock down the house of left economic and racial ideas, Sowell is unique even among the conservatives he’s usually cited with for his immunity to real knowledge and his social-scientific sophistry.
Given the gargantuan volume of Sowell’s popular writing, I’m going to need to focus on the central cluster of claims Sowell is known for. This is essentially aggregated from a variety of Sowell’s work, since much of it is repetitive-the primary books I’m addressing are Discrimination and Disparities and Black Rednecks, White Liberals, combined with the vast expanse of Sowell video interviews and clips available on the Internet. I’ve broken down what I see to be this central cluster into its constitutive claims in order to deal with them in sequence:
1.Disparities do not prove discrimination, particularly pertaining to Black-White economic inequality in the US.
2.Black Americans, especially the worst-off living in urban centers, have a “redneck” culture that was handed to them by White southerners via Britain. It is this culture which produces bad behavioral patterns, such as crime and single parenthood.
      3. These behavioral patterns are exacerbated by the interventions of the welfare state.
      4. It is these behavioral patterns from the combination of culture and welfare that lead to Black-White economic inequality.
      5. Black people are blameworthy for their inequality-producing behavior.
Each of these claims, as well as the argument as a whole, are riddled with problems of argumentative logic and empirical evidence. In many cases even just one of them would tank the entire enterprise; the sum of all of them is utterly damning."

      @@YaHUKaB_ShaRYAL_YaShaRAL Discrimination and Disparities
Sowell is correct that intentional racial discrimination (according to Sowell’s classification, Discrimination 1b and 2) at a given juncture - say, racial discrimination by an employer - cannot fully explain Black-White racial disparities in economic outcomes. It does not follow, however, that therefore the remaining racial disparity not explained by acute racial discrimination is not caused by racism in society. Sowell concludes that, for instance, employers and realtors and bankers will make choices about hiring or real estate or loans based on the relevant qualities the individual brings to the table, such as education, credit scores, criminal or eviction history, and so on (this is what he calls Discrimination 1a). People have differences in the quantity and quality of these they can bring to the table, and thus it is perfectly reasonable to find inequalities in economic outcomes.
What is not answered by this, however, is why these inequalities would be unevenly distributed by race. It’s certainly not a realtor’s fault that there is a Black-White disparity in credit score, but that difference is not a natural fact of the universe. I and most other social scientists believe that there is inherited inequality from the entire history of American social life that at least in part accounts for why the distribution of these sorts of things are unequal by race. The literature on inherited racial inequalities in sociology, economics, and history is simply massive and cannot be hand-waved away. As it stands, Sowell’s argument on this point is hopelessly endogenous.
This argument is also wrapped up with the claim that any government intervention intended to reduce disparities will result in unintended consequences that will most likely make things worse for the people you’re trying to help. This is, in the terms of Albert Hirschman, the “perversity thesis” - the common conservative argument that whatever change you want to implement in society will actually do the opposite of what you want it to do. The reason why this rhetorical move has power is because it seems intuitively true, and sometimes policies do have consequences of this kind. But it simply does not logically follow from the example that some such policies backfired that any such policy inevitably will.

I'm a white European man, only ever been to US a couple of times. I grew up quite interested in hip hop culture but then started distaining aspects of it as I grew older. At some point of my life, I thought I am racist. The reason is because I started disliking a lot of black people I met, to a point where I realized It's wrong to dislike someone because of their skin colour and didn't want to feel that way but I couldn't help it. Over time I have realized It had nothing to do with skin colour at all. It had to do with this culture of violence, greed, narcissism, etc. I hate it in all people but through social conditioning I actually subconsciously believed that is black culture. Part of my realization came when I met several African immigrants who were a bit older and I found them absolutely amazing, virtuous, kind and intelligent.

Shaq refuses to have his name attached to any shoe that costs ridiculous amounts of money, and he goes around and plays ball with the kids in bad neighborhoods, reminding them to get a good education and stay out of trouble. We believed that education was the key to success, not glorifying ignorant and ratchet behavior. Yes there absolutely is a problem with Black culture today. @sunshynff ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@akiraxtreme ...Im not saying there isn't a problem within the black and brown community, I just hate seeing it being called culture. Culture with any lighter skin tone almost always relates to sophistication, (having) class, suave but you put culture and black together, and you're not at an African heritage festival or a social justice meeting, it automatically has a negative connotation. It's another way for the ruling class to marginalize a group, "other" them, convince the poorest whites, they're still better than those animals over there, it's in their culture, they can't control themselves.
The other extremely dangerous aspect of chalking up the problems in black and brown communities to simply culture, is that if it becomes more commonplace or a full blown narrative, it makes it easier for authoritarian leaders or those who do not have the citizens best interest in mind, start to dehumanize that group who's "culture" can't be helped, make it easier for certain groups to feel superior. Then it's just a short jump, if those leaders want to do harm or acts of violence enacted on that group by those that feel superior, because you've dehumanized them in their eyes. I know that sound a little over dramatic, but it's a slow burn we really need to look out for in this day and age.
I'm exactly 10yrs older than you, and while I didn't grow up in the hood, I wasn't in no gated community either, lower middle class blue collar family and neighborhood, I was lucky to have a really great dad, who was socially conscious, and just one of the kindest people I've ever known, I knew we were slightly poor, but my dad never let me and my sister forget our privilege, not the word he used, but let us know there's people out there struggling a hell of lot more than us. So I started paying attention to what I could at relatively young, like college age, young 20s, and for a long time in my late 40s, I really thought kids were worse today, things went down hill, but I really think that's because we look at our youth with so much nostalgia, every generation does.
Damn I rambled like an old fool at a Sunday BBQ, here's the thing, I have found in life, when there is polarizing issue, whether it be personal thing in your life, or a social issue, neither side of the argument is rarely 100% right, the truth usually lies somewhere near the middle. I think it's ok to say there is a decent amount of the black and brown community, especially the young adults, that need a fire lit under they ass, and quit blaming everything and everyone, take some responsibility for ones own actions, and start being an example to follow, and lift themselves and communities up. While at the same time recognizing how far behind the 8ball systemic racism and oppression has put people of color in this country. I think both can exists at the same time. And if we can except that, then people can burn less energy deciding which side of the issue is to blame more, and start putting more energy into fixing the issue, regardless of the cause.
IDK, sorry I rambled, just my thoughts on it, props for responding intelligently and respectfully, been getting a lot of negativity for disagreeing with Sowell, it was nice to head into the weekend on a civil and positive note. Have a good weekend.

My children are well aware that they may get a diploma, but they have not graduated by my standards until they have read and known Dr. Thomas Sowell. I was taught growing up; That culture was the expression of values. So even a rapper that expresses the positive values that you feel are important, deserves to be listened to. Any behavior whether it's speech, food, art, dress ect that expresses the values you collectively share, becomes culture. Does that sound about right? I could be over simplifying it.
Again, thank you for sharing your content. You've given me hope that my sons will be become men in an America where black and white are united like yen and yang. I hope my sons reach your age and have friends that come together like you men have.

I grew up in the 60s, in a "ghetto" in DC, attended all black schools straight through high school. The culture we had was work hard, keep your nose clean, respect your elders, and most importantly, the knowledge that you had to be twice as good as your white counterpart once you went out into the "world" just to have a chance at an opportunity. Failure meant not just disappointing your parents but others in the neighborhood as well. Everyone I grew up with had that same experience. The teachers we had in those all black schools were the best, and they drilled into us not only the basics, e.g. how to read and write, understanding mathematics, history, etc. But also civics and our responsibilities as citizens. That was the black culture I knew. We knew of the subculture Sowell is talking about, but it was the exception and not the rule for black people, at least at that time. Ghetto culture is said to be "black" culture, as if all blacks are somehow bound to or steeped in that culture, and its simply not true. Yes, there were some back then who were, as the old folks used to say "no 'count" but we didn't hear gun shots either, and by and large people were for the most part striving to get ahead. I know of many doctors, lawyers, engineers and others who came out of what Sowell and others would call the black ghetto, because the culture we had was one hard work and excellence. That's HISTORICAL black culture.

Hard work and excellence is American culture it’s not just black culture. Even that is racist thinking and we’ve got to stop it. I was raised with the same values you were obviously raised with and I’m white. People of all colors have those same values of working hard, respecting your elders, etc. but when people say “now that’s black culture” then you’re excluding everyone else and separating yourself as a separate culture a separate group of people which is wrong. We are all Americans with a shared American culture and that includes people in history of all colors whether it be Harriet Tubman, Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King Jr., George Washington, Booker T. Washington, John Quincy Adams, etc. Everyone who has come before us is our shared history and our shared culture. We are not separate people because of our skin color and need to stop falling into that mentality, it’s a trap that helps no one and hurts everyone.

@@anjoleeeickhoff6800 When black folk have to hear day in and day out, to this day, that negative "ghetto" culture is somehow black culture, that "all of us" need to "not be like that," as if we all are, that's what needs to stop. When we as black people say our culture is one of excellence it isn't excluding anyone but a logical response to those of you who insist on pushing destructive stereotypes about what is and isn't black culture. There is absolutely nothing racist about black people saying ours is a culture of excellence, especially when in fact it is true, and when it is delivered to counter the continuing racist narratives about how "all black people are." As a white person you should be able to accept others declaring what's great about their own culture without getting into your feelings and automatically seeing it as somehow an attack on white people. The life experience in the US of Harriet Tubman who was not even allowed to be a US citizen for most of her life, and that of John Quincy Adams is far different and pretending there were no differences does a disservice to the real history and yes, culture of America. Like it or not, America IS a multicultural society, and that's what makes this country great. There is no one, homogenous culture, and its ridiculous to expect that when people come here from so many other countries, bringing their culture with them. I can't even imagine what this country would be like were the rule "check your culture at the door" and (try to) homogenize with a dominant group that supports a political party whose success rides on division. Non white Americans have contributed so much to this country that is taken for granted. To say to them/us that we cannot declare the excellence of our own culture, and be proud of it, lest we somehow qualify it with the experiences of white people, is racist. Americans need to learn to live and let live, accept, respect and embrace other cultures for what they are and stop trying to whitewash the differences in culture away out of fear.
