Your Dad hit the nail on the head, with regard to Grand parents passing on valuable life skills to their Grand children. I often wish that I would've had the special relationship with my Dad, as you do with yours. I'm now well into my 50s, and I have two kids who I rarely see anymore. How I long for the family and traditions of days long ago. Keep up the great work, and may God continue to bless you both.

I agree with your comments about the influence grandparents can have on kids. I didn't get a lot of time with my grandparents, they all died when I was fairly young. But the time I did have with them I look back on fondly, and want my kids to have those experiences.

Would love to see that, Patreon or the like get some crowdsource going? And perhaps get a few other bushcrafters in, actually this could get even better. Do your own version of "Alone", even if it isn't legitimately on the same level of survival, I would think heaps of people would love to see a somewhat dramatized short film? Maybe get Joe involved, see if you can find a sponsor even to just cover plane tickets and basic accomodations for the few days/week it takes to put together?

    • @survivalboys1754

My grandmother was the driving force in my life when it came to manners and proper respect for elders. That is a good theory about missing that generational gap of knowledge. I recently got the entire "Foxfire" series books which are an amazing gathering of knowledge about the old ways. It started out as a high school project that turned into a magazine, which later were compiled into 15 books or so. In the 1960's high school students in the Appalachian mountains interviewed the elders in the community and documented everything they could about how they lived when they were younger. They are fascinating reading. I really like this channel. I watch a lot but don't comment too much. I appreciate your hard work in putting these videos together. Thanks

You guys are awesome i love how tight your family is. I am 38 years old and i try my hardest to raise my kids with old school respect and manners. We sit down every night as a family no phones and eat dinner as a family. I think we have lost the family time together as a society parents have to work to much to make ends meet so they rely on technology to raise their children. Thank you guys for posting great videos and showing how families should be

Hi Mike and Graham, I have been a regular viewer of both TA outdoors and TA Fishing, I really look forward to your latest clips. I totally agree with your views on society and family values today. I am your Dads age and I have two son both older than yourself plus six grandchildren.
I love the outdoors ,Bush crafting and Fishing, I take my Grandchildren Camping and fishing so I know how much it means to you to have a close relationship with your Dad. We have great fun building Rope swings, Zip wires across streams and shelters(Dens) . Its great to see youngsters enjoying the great outdoor rather than at home on a Computer.
You are doing a great job, keep the (very professional) videos coming.
    Cheers Ian

    Have only watched the entro to the video so far, and once again hubby and I are amazed by the quality of the film editing... Mike you have a wonderful gift and we are thankful you share it... =)... Ok, we watched the rest of the video, loved the fire ring..hubby promised me he was going to make one for our back yard.. I agree with your Dad, though, even if they do have them, too many now days tend to disregard the grandparents as being "too old fashioned" in their life outlook ...yes I have been told that by one or two of our kids.. sad to say.....AND, the peg leg at the end had hubby and I totally cracking up...From a G'Pa and G'Ma of 12{we have 5 daughters} in Oklahoma, who thoroughly enjoy both you and your Dads channels, send out a huge thank you!... =)..{oh ya .. love that you did almost an hour video... honestly, that was the fastest 48 minutes .. your videos are so good we really do look forward to the next one.. }

Great ending loved every bit your pops a right giggle. I'm with you on the growing up without grandparents as in my case even worse i was put in care at age of 6 and that really upsets the balance of things growing up. We as humans need our family from start to finish to learn everything we can . Which is why after 32 years not being around my pops i'm now trying to regain what was lost so many years ago.So a big thank you to you and your dad for being here for me

This was a great video! Love all the videos with you and your dad. There is something missing of what we are teaching our children today. It is more important to be entertained or.... to have what we want immediately without working for it or waiting for it or even being grateful for it. We teach our children it is more important to have things instead of character. The filming of your videos is wonderful. I always wonder at how sure-footed you are and then at the end of the video saw you stumble.. so funny. Hope all these videos continue to bring you success and a hope for a future doing what you love.. maybe in the future you will move to television ... but please always remember you are what has made your channel successful. People will criticize (while watching from their couch) or try to exploit what you have worked for.

Growing up I only had one grandparent, my grandma. I did learn some sewing and quilting from her as well. But growing up, I was closest to my Dad after I was the age of 5 or 6. He showed me so much about gardening, building, auto mechanics and how to drive a tractor, how to use a tiller. We also use to go hunting together. I miss him and my Mom and grandma terribly.
I believe you are right when it comes to where and how we learn respect and how the elderly are treated.
In the world today there is barely respect for human life; young and/or old. I actually think the world of your relationship as father and son. Your videos are amazing.

Couldn't agree more with the theory about family. I'm 38 and moved back home to keep an eye on my dad after my mum passed away and he's very much old school. He's 82 in January and a retired electrician but still goes out and does odd jobs. Things have definitely changed for the worse in regards to respecting older people. I've been very fortunate to have been brought up old fashioned and fully intend to teach that to my unborn daughter when she's old enough to understand. Keep up the amazing videos guys, reminds me very much of my childhood. My mum was an akela in the cubs for over 30 years so I spent a lot of time camping and some of my best memories were round a campfire so thank you for the reminders of good times. We are both very lucky mate in that were both very close with our dads, unfortunately not everyone has that nowadays.

I completely agree with you on the lack of respect and loss of those family interactions. My grandparents were around as a child, even my great grandparents until I was in my late teens. And at 40 I still have 3 living grandparents and I can say I have learned a great deal from them. And your right about the teaching of respect by them I would never disrespect my grandparents or even my parents it's nice to see someone Mike's age with those values .

You mention that respect for elders (and I am paraphrasing) is something to be taught with an iron fist: "Your mom was quite hard on us... manner wise". Fear is an amazing teacher but what about inspiring this respect instead? You can threaten a kid to obey, be polite or don't speak his mind but if you don't explain, inspire or tell him why, if you don't give him a reason for this respect (love) to exist, it isn't respect. It just means that he is afraid.
Kids are not the ones to blame. Faulty education methods, lack of role models, rites of passage, etc... could be better candidates.
Elderly people are usually quite stiff, many of them have crystallized after a lifetime of frustration and lost their inner child.
It is obviously not the case of your dad (which is freaking awesome) but let's not generalise and think that all of them are like this. It would be a million times easier for a kid to respect and love your dad than to respect a depressed, lonely retiree. Kids are not the one to blame for that. The society that creates those lonely, depressed elders is.
The problem lies at several levels, one of them being the lack of opportunity for young and old to be together, connected through meaningful activities. Where exchange can happen, just like what you are doing with your dad!
Schools should implement in their curriculum a lot more interactions between young and old. It would be a fantastic way to re-establish this link, tackle the elderly loneliness problem and create the right conditions for kids to love and respect the seniors.
Respect has to be earned, it cannot be taught.

Yeah and maybe the Young People can teach the Elderly what the Communist School Teachers have Forced the Younger Generation to learn about the Religion of Islam and trying to either get them to convert to Islam or Communism and if they don't Convert those who have Bully them until they do.

Liked the theory moment in this update. Would like to say that this is my first comment in 10 years of watching TH-cam. The topic of information being passed down from generation to generation is definitely not happening as much as it was before. But it has diminished only within a family. I am learning from you. And you live across the big pond. I appreciate everything you gentlemen are sharing and how it all comes together. What we should never loose and always pass on is the CORRECT WAY to perceive the world around us and how to make it better for US, not just ME. Thank you again and keep up the good bushcrafting.

Real talk at the end, so many miss out on grandparents keeping us straight an civil human beings, yet we forget so often we are just animals in this thing we call life, still in the category of creatures on this ring of life we ourselves have identified. Good talk guys, as always stirring the minds of the curiosity

Mike and Graham, love your videos and especially seeing the way Graham's mind work around things. You are blessed too Mike with the ability to be around your Dad. I agree about the manners mentioned in this video. My family is scattered all over the eastern USA and only get to see grandkids rarely. When I do, I always answer this questions with sir or ma'am and they asked me why and I told them that was the way I was taught manners and they should practice it too.. Unfortunately most of young folks I meet were not taught this. Great point of view and again appreciate you guys.

When I was little my big brother and I used to make "dens" among the trees at the bottom of the garden. Every time I see you at the camp I am reminded of the smells and sounds of the time. We had so much fun and it looks like you do too. Everybody should get to play outdoors!

Another awesome video added to the arsenal!!! Your pops cracks me up!! But seriously, I love the pipe added to the fire place for draw. I also really like your dads design and methods for crafting the car wheel fire place. Y’all keep up the good work! Also, can’t wait to see how the covered garden at Badgers Rest turns out!!

Love the silence of the project part of your show and the talk story at the finish. We live on an island where folks still have children very young.... not married necessarily, but they become parents and live with the parents of usually, the son. There is a respect for elders here in the Islands I think is less common on the Mainland of the United States. We certainly have our own set of issues but I am grateful for the way kids are with their elders here. Both my husband and I were not reared among extended family as both our parents immigrated to the U.S. We so love your channel.

You guys are Awesome!! And I have to say...it's not luck...You did it...by spending quality time together, laughing, and creating stuff. It is so great to see you two carrying on! I wish I had that in my life...I lost my parents when I was 11 yrs old...really didn't have the chance to build what you two have. And I love that you're aware of how special it is. Cate xo

Favorite jam; strawberry rhubarb - best made from my garden last year. I think you are spot on in regards to the importance of grandparents and family to children. And, the issues coming from the lack of that influence today. We worked hard to keep our kids connected to their extended family to ensure they had a good base in life.

I am a single mother raised 3 sons and a daughter by myself but couldn't have done it without the help of my parents!!! I believe you are on to something because my kids have so much respect for older people and my youngest is almost 21 oldest is 35. Their grandparents are still with us, thank God but know they have been essential part of raising my 4 kids. GOD BLESS GRANDPARENTS!!!!!

I'm so glad to hear you're a teacher too. I've noticed, too, that our generation (I'm 31) has started learning more from each other than our parents. I certainly didn't learn much from my grandparents, most of whom died before I was 12 years old. And I learned some from my own dad, who I still like to see as much as possible, but if there's one parent you need to be separate from, it gets really hard to connect to your family. I'm grateful to my friends for all having weird skills, and I'm hoping for a weird little commune of other millennials who want to live in the woods.
