I head off into the woods for an overnight solo camping trip using my military poncho tent or Polish Lavvu as it is known as. This small canvas tent is great for camping in all conditions. I usually set the tent up with a centre pole made from a stick, however, this time I do it differently. Using some Primitive Bushcraft, I dig for tree roots and use these as natural cordage to tie together a tripod which supports the tent from the top and eliminates the need for a centre pole. This gives me much more room in the tent for my sleeping pad and backpack gear etc. I gather some firewood, light a fire and cook up a steak on the grill over the camp fire. I then talk about some of the gear that I use. The forest is so silent at night, it was eerily quiet, until the owls started hooting later in the evening. Listening to nature asmr was a great way for me to fall asleep. The following morning, I got the fire going again with some feather sticks and a ferro rod. Using some more Bushcraft and natural materials, I made a pot hanger to make a tea over the fire, before I packed up the camping gear and went back home. TA Outdoors I think it would be an interesting POV and regular blog on your website, if you got Emmys insight on being a Bushcrafters wife. There must be scrafice and interesting stories from her perspective. I've seen allot of survival videos and your the first person I've ever seen make lighting a fire with flint and steel look easy.... Many TH-cam survivalists do it every video even though they have a lighter in there pocket and struggle forever trying to light the fire but you spend a few minutes doing prep work and light the fire instantly everytime... I love what you do Mike, its a real inspiration for me to get back out there. Its been 20 years since I've gone camping and due to a Traumatic Brain Injury I am unable to work so funds are tight and I love seeing the outdoors and all the bush crafting you do. I'd personally love to see more bushcrafting. Maybe some "On a budget" bushcrafting or some "Back to the basics" videos as well. Thats just me.

Great video Mike, top notch production quality, and well shot. I like the tripod over the center pole for sure. I've been on the fence whether to pick up a canvas poncho shelter or go with a canvas tarp. Thanks for having us along!
Slept in one of these in the rain in basic training years ago. As you noted, it takes two, so every person carries one and half of the stakes, then you set it up together and make it a very small two man tent.

Thanks a lot for this great video. Love this poncho. Something that could help to wear it is the string loop you have in your back (the one you have used for your candle). The first drawstring, as you have shown, is used to tighten the hood, but the second one, if you pull it, will make the poncho far more easiest to wear.

I have two of these and have made the tent and slept in it in New Hampshire. Never thought to use the tripod method, great tip thanks. Its super heavy carrying both together but really good water protection especially if you use a water repellent.

Bushcraft and hunting awesome
Use mine in the winter when trekking with a sled. Awesome wind block. Digging into deep snow even one poncho can be a shelter. It is also canvas so one can get real cozy with a sleeping fire.

I would love to see a bunch of TA hacks and TA tricks for campers, alot of us are new to this type of camping and some might want to know more about hammock and tarp camping and you do have alot of TA hacks, tips and tricks there! Like tying a knot on the straps from the three to the hammock to stop water running in to the hammock. Small, handy and TA hacks that us normal people dont think about but totaly makes the experience better!

I've just bought one of those Polish tents off ebay. Been a bit tricky figuring out how to pitch it properly cos there's no instructions with it. But still, its' very good and like you say, versatile. I like the fact that you can just use one of the ponchos as a shelter if you want. I had'nt figured out how to string it up from the top so that was a very useful video. Thanks.

Thats a handy shelter i dont have a decent tarp so i use the out layer cover off my tent in kind of the same fasion you did but you gave me a great idea for my campsite build and how to make the cover look better thanks for the upload .
im aroud 6.5 ft high and when i was in military this poncho felt like it was made for me :D man it was briliant on rainy windy days.

I used the U.S. Army version of the two poncho shelters throughout Vietnam and usually slept quite comfortably. Those shelters Ideally consisted of two ponchos, three empty mortar round boxes, one or two poncho liners, and an air mattress. However, we usually had to wait until later in the evening to fall asleep as "contact" usually initiated around 8:00 PM.
I think Jaxx would love the camping ... he would love just hanging around with you ...

As soon as you started unwrapping your journal, before it came into view, i knew exactly what it was. I have exactly the same one. Did some writing in the woods Wednesday night myself actually. I found a spot by my favorite stream, set up camp, tested out some new gear (partly inspired by your kit), cooked some grub, hung my bear bag, and listened to (oddly enough) the owls. The babbling brook, and owl hoots were very peaceful, right up until the wolves started howling... i have the benefit of bringing my rifle with me. I don't shoot it much while camping. It does make me feel safer on my own.
Thank you for all you do Mike. I've always been a woodsman/ camper, but you and a few others online have given me some valuable insight, techniques, and gear recommendations. In the end it's all about getting out there where i don't have cell coverage, unplugging, and enjoying the great outdoors. I really enjoyed the video, the Poncho shelter, and the parallels, and differences. Oceans apart, but the same sky above. Thanks again Mike.
Plenty of good bush craft demonstrations in this video. The tripod set-up really worked well for the ponchos. Use that and you will have space for Jaxx too!
