Im installing this unit on my Old Town now! Pretty excited! Great video, Hummingbird does recommend installing a 3 amp in line fuse at the positive battery connection fyi
Just placed my order for this kayak, so was very pleased to see and follow your very clear and helpful video on installing the Humminbird Helix 5 - thank you!
Nice! Hope you enjoy it! Yeah, I made this video because when I wanted to learn how to do it, I watched a dozen different videos and they all skipped several important steps. Not sure why they would leave those parts out.
Enjoyed your how to video. I hope to get a Helix 5 or 7 at some point. End of November, I purchased a used 2020 OT Sportsman 106 PDL. I've been itching to dry it out but it's just too damn cold. I was amazed to see you setting this up outside, in the snow! Well done!
Thank you. I hope you really enjoy your new used kayak. I still love the Helix 5 but a 7 would be extra nice with the bigger screen. I just got back from ice fishing... it was -30 today haha. There is snow in this video but it was warm and melting, I was in the kayak the weekend I made this video. 1.5 hour drive to Minnesota and Rainy River was wide open!
Thanks Michael! I made this video because I have seen too many videos on how to install a fish finder but they would describe what needs to be done but not show all the steps in detail.
Thank you. I don't do too many how-to videos but I was disappointed when I searched videos how to install this. Lots of videos but they all skipped essential steps. I tried to get every detail in this one others don't have to guess.
Oh yeah buddy! I cant wait to get back to Ontario and do some editing! I am going to edit my Barbe Lake video first because it's going to be an easy quick edit, I only fished 2.5 hours. Then our walleye vid! Heading to Footprint tomorrow... Woooo!
I'm installing mine this week just bpughtvthe helix 5. What size are the screws and nuts you used on the mount? Can't wait to see the yakking put this summer. We'll have to share videos. My lake has 5-15lb trout this summer, so I can't wait to get out and try this new sportsman 106.
Ah its been a while I honestly can't remember what size the bolts were. I think they were 1/4". Once you start working with your mount it'll be obvious. I haven't done too much trout fishing in the yak, I spend most of the ice fishing season catching trout but that sounds awesome!
My 1st kayak Oldtown Pdl 120, installing my transducer today and love this video! It’s more detailed and helpful than any other video I’ve seen. Know just trying to figure out what side I should mount the monitor, I fish out of the right side, any suggestions?
Thanks. I found most videos cut out important steps so I tried to get every step in the video. I went with the mount on the left side because that is the same side as the forward facing rod holder and I also fish mostly on the right side. I would rather have one side with all the clutter so it's easy to get in and out if the kayak. I like to keep one side open. Also I use the rod holder on the right side to hold my landing net. I try to bring the fish in on the right side everytime. Cheers
No regrets with the install. I used the unit all season last year and everything was fine. Only thing I regret is one day slipping the kayak into a lake I dragged it going backwards instead of lifting the front and the transducer caught a log and snapped the mount. I repaired it with hot glue but need to replace it. So operator error. Its protected going forward but not backwards.

That is a great idea, honestly. An inline fuse is easy to install. It's too bad the power cables don't come with a fuse built in from the factory.

first step was clearing out all that snow! Great Video
Haha yes thank you. There was deep snow here but I was fishing in the kayak that weekend. 2 hiur drive away Rainy River was wide open. Cheers

@@differentfins that's the way man!! Looks good tho
Nice job my friend! Got the Helix 5 on my rig and gotta say, wish Oldtown had preformed holes for wiring.
I believe the new Old Town autopilot kayaks have built in wiring holes. This turned out okay though.
@@differentfins Yes it did!
Good video, well informative

Lots of snow lol. Thanks for watching and have a great day 😊
Good job Brother, go get them👍
Yeah buddy. All I need now is the snow and ice to F off lol. It might be another month before I get to try out the kayak and fish finder.
Good video!

Great install, any regrets or design differences you wish you went with instead of the current install?

The transducer won’t get ruined with water right?
They are made to be under water, several years later it still works 😉
