You are exactly right about plowing depth FF. I saw a great farm ruined by people plowing it too deep. The top soil was great and would grow shoulder high tobacco until the farm was sold. The new occupants would plow it as deep as possible and they eventually rolled all the clay up on top and the good gray topsoil under. It never grew tobacco as good again.
Love the old M with the three bottom Little Genius.. I have a lot of great memories of dad using that combo.
Yes, thanks for your take on plowing depth. Couldn't agree more.
Do what works
I remember riding on dads 806 plowing I’ve spent many hours of my childhood on the fender and if I got bored I’d jump off and play in the creek lol those were the days
Those were definitely the days
Great video with great information for those who don't know. You are right about plowing I set up many plows over the years. I used to work for farms and dealers and plowing to see how they plowed. From one bottom to eight tagging them together making the best job plowing we could do. Ñew is nice but old showed class and great engineering for the time and build with pride too. 👍😅
Glad you got the old m out to do some work.
It was long overdue
I've always enjoyed molboard plowing. No matter if I'm doing it or I see it in a video, I love it. Thanks.
Very good and accurate information concerning mold board plowing.
Great video and great job explaining about plow depth
I got a 4 pan trailer disc plow the 400 pulled it well. I haven't tried the 4 bottom moldboard on the 400. Thanks for sharing.
Really great information on plowing ! I need a pull type 3 bottom for my M that would make a world of difference for me wanting to plow my back field . Thanks for sharing and have a great evening !
Shining Shares Sunday Fun Day! Thanks for the videos 🇺🇸🍻
Excellent video Gino :) also agree 100 % with said my dad taught me on plowing said top blade of plow flip dirt okay like pancakes flipping that doing right way on flat land leve and if got hill part go one more inches worth! I plow with A 1968 International 624 A 62 hp Desiel motor and 4 furrows plow no wheels of John Deere one but had 3 points hitch plus 4 disks !
45 M keeps going. Amazing.
This was worth the wait for sure
He's staight and to the point is the best way to explain it straight and to the point and also He's right about the depth how deep to plow it and I agree with him about plowing 👍👍👍
Great job M!
They are a good match. It is a bit of an art form to have a plow setup correctly.
Experience definitely helps
Great explanation of moldboard plowing...
Took the smta out today with 15ft'er and made her grunt. You can hear the governor kick in after you drop the disc, I guess thats why some had the M&W governor for the faster recovery. Love the torque of the 264. M's have power but the Super MTA is another level. Love the old red power.
It's definitely another level
I just injoy watching 👀what you do with your Red Power 🔋 tractors 🚜, I remember driving a few of them when I was young, god bless 🙌🙏 you and your family 👪.
Nice work Gino ive allways loved plowing. The freshly plowed ground smells so good. Enjoyed your video have a great day.
Thanks man I appreciate it
Great to just trun it over is the right way God bless you
Doing a nice job with the M🙂
Good job there! I have 2 of the Little Genius Plows like yours; 2 - 14'' ( 1 on steel and 1 on rubber) I also have an extra bottom. My intentions are to turn one into a 3 bottom like yours for my M! Always projects to think about! Great video!
Yeah that would work
But ya gotta admit,,once you get it tuned in,,nothing like a trip plow.
The M just can't be beat. It was the first one I bought.
Same here
Good plowing information
Great video 💪 dont know why but just after you started ploughing the phrase "go for throttle up" came to mind and the M just did 👌Red Power 💪💥
It's got a lot of power for its size
Killer video!!
M is for mo’ bottoms for the SMTA 💪🏻. The ole M is still a stud though. Keep crushin it FF🇺🇸💥🇺🇸
The M handles the 3 bottom very well. My grandpa bought a 3 bottom Little Genius new in 1951 and we still have it. He pulled it with the W-4. You could try the H; it would do it, but the M does it so well and with ease. We're in different soil now and the bottoms on the Little Genius won't work in this harder clay, and it's too much to ask of the W-4 to pull it. If we had the right bottoms with throwaway shares a W-6 or M would do it though.
That plow would never leave the farm, that's heirloom.
Always a pleasure to watch your channel =)
Appreciate it
Man I love the way you explain this! You’re right on! The seedbed is paramount for the old fashioned way of cropping! There’s just one thing…….. you’re desperately in need of crimson clover out there………… and I’m in the process of putting some pressure on you to that end! BOOM 💥
You very rarely see crimson clover up here. It's usually Ladino or the white Dutch clover and that is left alone for a couple of years, and then you turn it under and grow corn behind it.
@@FarmallFanatic Well, we plunged from the mid 40°s to negative 3° and it didn’t hurt it……. So I’m gonna say you should at least try on good size patch…….. one 50# bag it doesn’t tie your field up for two years and produces MUCH more nitrogen! My results this year are stunning.
I'm definitely willing to try it not to mention how it looks in the field
Looks like u know what ur talking about. Good looking ground.
I have years of doing this i'm old lol
Sheesh, ain't even breakin' a sweat!
No it felt no different than 2 bottoms
I don’t plow mine every year even though it makes great videos. I had an Oliver sulky plow I used here originally. It was a pain to operate as it wouldn’t trip correctly and turning at the ends was a problem
Yeah i've definitely dealt with that nonsense
The M stands for mighty I always say!😎
I agree
It plows a lot better when your plow gets shined up 😮
That's true
lets go lets grow!!
@farmallfanatic Does your fields get plow shear and if so, how do you do to 'subsoil' the field?
I'll plant alfalfa or something
@@FarmallFanatic thanks. I googled alfalfa and did not realize the roots could go up to 20-ft in the ground.
Does this smother the weeds well or do you still spray after a regrowth?
It smothers the weeds. And then you have to spray at a later date. But you don't have to spray twice.
Never plowed with a three bottom. We had a 2x14 Oliver trailer on rubber with blade shares and shins so it was more or less a modern plow. We didn't have to blacksmith when the points wore and I would change the shin to save the moldboard. We would plow 6 inch deep to keep the tail wheel in the last furrow. We had clay tile that Dad laid in the bottom of the furrow that he hand dug with a tile shovel. We were in the topsoil and we didn't want to bring up the clay tile or rocks.
Who are you trying to convince on the way you plow? I would have been tickled to set up a foreign plow that quick where you turned it over. Grass down, Dirt up. If I had dirt like you have I would plow then disc pulling a single culta packer and then plant with a drill this late in the year. The more you drive on the ground the more you pack the soil.
I need to assume you make a living wage on your land. Maybe you drive a school bus and farm in between bus routes. We have guys that take the bus home to farm between pickup and drop off.
In a past TH-cam post you place a paper filter inside the sediment bowl. I know it was WIX but what number was it? I have a 51 H that I want to add that to. I am a subscriber and LOVE all your content and information!
How big is the sediment bowl on your H? I know mine is too small to put one of them in it.
@@FarmallFanatic Standard issue size so probably to small as well. Thanks for the reply and I never miss a post!!!
The M earnin her keep...
Nice job plowing. I am looking at a 656 Hi Clear with a rough looking loader. It has the 263 gas which does not currently run. Any thoughts on price?
Well the real question is why doesn't it run
@@FarmallFanatic yes, that has a big impact on price. I hate the ran when parked statement. That doesn't really matter, does it run now cause that determines price.
A lot of these guys will say it's fully restored and then the last sentence of the paragraph will be it needs this or it needs that, but yet ask full price
We always plowed! When everyone went to no till we stayed with the plow! Take that 3 bottom and get sand blasted then paint her up! It’s well worth fixing up! First plow I owned was a 2 bottom little genius! Bought it off a neighbor who sold his dairy herd and parked everything! Got the H to go with it all for $500.00 used em both for 10 years! And that was the beginning of buying red power and rebuilding it for sale and use ! Your SMTA will pull 4-14’s no sweat! I pulled 4-14’s with my SM for years
I just gotta find the right plow
@@FarmallFanatic true! I eventually went with Oliver trailer plows with a hydraulic cylinder! Used others that didn’t pull as good! John Deere trailer plows were weak! Moline were good but hard to find!
I heard that John Deere trailer plows pull hard.
@@FarmallFanatic they’re junk
Love it. FF
Hey FF what should I set my H’s wheel spacing to if I want to pull a little genius plow what measurement And where should I measure from
Dead center pto shaft to inside wall of right tire. 25.5"
@@FarmallFanatic thanks man
I am going to go against the consensus, at least partially. Moldboard plowing was invented to do the very thing you discuss. But when tractors were introduced over draft animals, their weight started taking its toll by introducing a "hard pan" in the soil. The hard pan needs to be removed by deep plowing regularly. My ag degree is dated, but I still believe in the old theory of 7000 + pound tractors packing the soil and the shallow moldboard plow does not address that potential problem.
JMHO
I totally agree that's why they invented the ripper
With a plow set perfectly, when a field is finished you should not be able to tell how many bottom plow was used.
Are you going to plant or just keep plowing I would keep plowing but what are you going to do
I have about ten units of soybeans left that I don't want to go to waste so I will put them in the ground
Good old Super M. One thing about it though, didn’t make much difference what you were doing, it used about the same amount of fuel - a lot! Lol.
Regular M
Also you have to turn it over enough to cover your weed seed enough to control the weeds don't come back through. Throughout the decades of farming this way and crop rotation on the farm we hardly ever sprayed our fields because we never any sort of weed problems. I see the problems of today because everyone expects the chemicals to kill most of the weeds. I have noticed fields today are having more problems of certain types of weeds we never had decades ago.
Well decades ago we just cultivated
@@FarmallFanatic yep don't remind. We had four tractors cultivating in the fields and our favorite was the super c's and 200's
The M sure sounds good.... if you ever have the chance to get a 720 or a 710 semi mount for the 756. You will think that you died and went to heaven
I've actually seen a couple of those in 510's for sale at auction.
I plow 6 to 8 in depending on the soil
I plow to standard not to depth
You need to carry a paint scraper to clean those molbords each run untill polished .
No arguing there
Find gravel ,or plow the road.
I just cut a 8 inch tree out of a little genius 3 bottom plow, been sitting for many, many years.
They're tuff...I bet it works
With grain farming you are just trying to build as nice a seed bed as you can. Now, if you're comfortable with the seed bed and you are only turning 4 inches that's fine. If you want to plow 20 inches deep, go for it.
20 inches deep and you will definitely not be plowing. But I know what you're saying.
@@FarmallFanatic Plow to China if you want.
Yes but when they see me plowing five inches they freak out
Finally got a notification on time!
Maybe they're actually going to push my channel properly
@@FarmallFanatic You know better than that!😂😂😂
That M is a plowing baby
Not bad for something that's 200 years old
I agree
My boss pulls 4 16s with his smta and pulls a 5 16 with his super WD9
You would have fairly easy pulling soil. We have hard clay and Dad used a 650 Diesel a lot at one time. He normally pulled 4-14s or 4-16s but he did pull 5-14s with the 650 occasionally. It did it but it was a good load.
@@tyfrank3427 we have fairly sandy soil to a point that an H can pull a 3 bottom
The wheel size really has no effect. When the little genius went to rubber tires they were almost the same size. The Two levers more than compensate for the Heights
I was just saying it's a different set as far as the levers when they are offset wheels.
I think some people just want to plow up gold lol.
Apparently lol
That tractor don’t know it’s back there pull 5
I definitely try pulling four bottoms
... that dog i'll hunt.....!!! BOOOOOOOOM...!!!
Your H will pull that.
One way to find out
