This is not your typical millennial! 😄I found this channel after spotting a old Farm-all lawn-ornament and thinking "that would be fun to get running", so I searched TH-cam and found what looked like the exact tractor being restored. Great content!

at 11:45, you should always tighten from the middle of the cover out to the ends... so if there's any wrinkle in the gasket, you are "chasing" it to the ends

This is a tractor like all the older tractors you can work on them yourself and they have style like older trucks and cars 😊😊😊😊
Please remember when ever using a cutting torch on wheels make with a tire mounted on the wheel sure the tire has no air in it. The super heating of the air in a tire next to a wheel that is being welded or torched will make the tire explode. Has killed more than one person.

Hydraulic press has been on my project list for 2 years. I’ll get around to building one eventually.

Enjoy your videos! I was/am concerned to see you striking Cast Iron with your Hardened steel mallets, Maybe a Brass bar between the cast and the steel mallet would be a better impact material. Or a Brass headed mallet, or softer alloy. You will be damaging cast iron parts or machined gears at some point and wishing you had used a brass bar at some time,. How do I know... I have made this error myself. Life is a learning curve for all of us. On the whole nice work!
Good job young man. I enjoy your attention to detail. Although, as thorough as your engine rebuild is, why not grind the camshaft? Those old tractors had notoriously badly ground camshafts in them due to the sheer volume of engines they were making. It's a '42 with a factory wide front? Rare indeed considering the war. Nice job.

Factory wide front, it has the setback plate as well to retain same wheelbase as the narrow front. I would have got a custom ground performance cam but I wound not have had enough time to get it done before the restoration competition.

Dirty disassembly and cleaning outside, then we moved it in the garage to stay clean for reassembly.

Andrews you could shoot a 10-hour video non-stop and I was sitting just plug my phone in and watch it from front to back and a lot of times I watch them two or three times to make sure I didn't miss nothing

Ok so I guess I'm gonna be the crotchety old man here but hope to spread some knowledge here so you don't damage things. So I grew up on a farm many years ago and we had a couple of Farmall M and 400/450 tractors and rebuilt them a couple of times as a kid. There is something you need to know about the blocks on these old Farmalls. And I hope some other folks are taking note of this. This tribal knowledge is being lost as the old farmers that rebuilt these in their machine sheds with OE IHC parts are dying off. Back in the day Farmall's machining tolerances for the sleeve bores in the block varied ALOT. What they did is actually had various different OD of sleeves to fit the various different bores in the block. The sleeve bore actually had a sliding (if I remember right) A-E scale of sleeves and the difference between the OD of a A to E sleeve could be .007" which is ALOT on a press fit sleeve. Farmall when machining the blocks would actually stamp on the deck the on what size of sleeve you needed. You were moving way too fast and the camera didn't focus but you can very clearly see an "A" @ 8:35 which is the smallest. It appears but I can't be sure the 2,3 were C sized. I'll bet the other sleeves probably went alot easier and you wonder why. That explains why you broke the sleeve and why it got so tight so fast.
BTW, folks Farmall is not the only company that did this. Because the OE stuff is gone and everything is now a nominal size you need to be checking the sleeves and boring these blocks accordingly.

When you switched to the steel plug, I was wondering if that would happen.
The same happened installing sleeves in a Case DC4 engine. NEVER use steel, always a dead blow.
Figured out later the steel drives the liner down with such force the sleeve flange snaps aff in tension. TWANG!

When I put new sleeves for my pistons i put them in dry ice instead of the freezer. Didnt need to hit them with anything. Just dropped right in.
Next time I rebuild a sleeved engine im going to use liquid nitrogen to install sleeves.
That transmission was disheartening to see. Looks like somebody ran it with water in the oil. Hopefully you can find a good counter shaft, or build that one up and use a lathe to get it back in spec. Final product looks great. Did you have to get another sleeve? Never seen one break like that. Looks like it was defective. Hopefully they gave you a replacement.
I did end up getting another sleeve. I think it was my fault breaking it. I hit it too hard at the end.
Old farm alls have a tendency to leak water into the transmission. The location of the cover/access plate is the design issue.
Breaking a sleeve is my biggest fear when building an engine. My W9 needs sleeves, but very expensive NOS is all that’s available. You can buy a whole set of “M” sleeves for the price of one W9 sleeve. It’s crazy. 😢

Where did you get sleeves and tires
You can get sleeves from steiner. I got tires from a local company. Saltamontes Tire in Bridgeport CT
Put your sleeves in the freezer before you slide them in the block. Makes life a bit easier

Im going to assume that you let the air out of the front tire before you used that torch to cut that bolt ?
Right, someone else also let me know the air should be let out before heat near the tire as we know heat makes air expand. Thanks for the reminder.

Look I know 10 different people will tell you how to do this rebuild. But listen I would not use HI tack to hold your gaskets in place. Once this drys you will never get that gasket off without scraping a little bit at a time off. I came across a gasket held on by hi- tack and I finally got the gasket off by spraying with gasket removal spray. I would spray the gasket down and let it soak in. Then I would scrape a layer off then spray soak and scrape a layer off. It don't seem like much but that oil pan gasket to what seem to be an hour to get to the point I could use a wire wheel to get the last of it off. I will never forget about that one hi- tack moment in my life. Also you have a John Deer shirt on when you restoring a red IH tractor at the end of the videi.
The electrics: are they 6v or 12v ?

I suggest you put the sleeves in the freezer for a few hours first
We did overnight. Next time I am going to bring the block and sleeves to work and use liquid nitrogen.
All the new tractors & combines use hydro static transmissions so there no
more having to split the tractor in half to do a clutch or whatever. Glory Days!!!
Of course in a few short years all equipment will be electric & THEN repairs
will really be a breeze!

When watching the video it seems that most of the shock forces from hammer are lost by the lack of support at front of engine 😢
How did you learn all of this
Read manuals and then figure it out. Make some mistakes. Commenters here and on TT have been helpful
