I recently rebuilt a CD4E for one of my Mazda Tribute 2001's. My second such rebuild. All checks went well. End clearance of the whole assembly is 0.4mm. Installed it does not engage at all in Drive or Manual 2nd. Reverse and Manual 1st are fine. I carefully counted all parts in and ensured thrust bearings were the right side up as usual. I have replaced the VSS, TSS, MLP/TRS, Solenoid pack, control valve assembly, main engine wiring harness and PCM+Key barrel with good spares. Still does not engage! Behaves like an electrical fault but is probably something mechanical. Oil level is good. Any suggestions on where to look for the issue would be welcome.
Forward direct drum, or the clutch going to the sprag (not the sun gear side but the sprag one way clutch side) if not that then a valve body issue, the valve body and subsequently the cover can be removed in the vehicle by removing the battery tray and bracket for it (ratchet wrench is suggested) the coolant will need to be drained and the lower hose removed, you will also need to remove the transmission cooler line that goes to the engine side of the transmission (not the pump side) it may even be an idea to direct pump output to a catch pan and wet air engage the desired clutches to check operation (with the engine running and the wheels up) though it might be unadvised due to the lube lines not functioning, the dangerous nature of running the vehicle in gear on Jack stands, and possibly without coolant, the clutch engagement chart should tell you which clutches to use for first gear non manual
you ever work that out? My 2002 tribute just failed for the 3rd time (250k). This time was weird, very suddenly it went from no signs of problems to just no engagement. It felt electrical to me too. My I tore it open I found a hairline fracture in the weld on the forward drum (a common failure I'm told). You really need to inspect it closely, its not likely to be obvious. This results in the forward, coast & direct clutch paths leaking into one another preventing anything from engaging properly. and since the reverse drum path was to pass through the direct drum spool, it messes that up too. Wet air pressure test during the rebuild would have revealed this, did you preform this? Did they pass?
What if you leave the original 2-4 servo in the unit and install everything else as you display. Will that cause a problem? Because I noticed the inner parts of the pack rotate freely when I'm reinstalling. But it seems the 2-4 band is gripping outer drum and it won't freely spin of course. I'm just wondering if that's okay? EDIT: never mind. I spun it with more effort and it seems to have come free.
Is it at all possible to clean that filter without opening up the tranny? My car does not engage after only a couple minutes of warm up, only engages cold so I'm thinking I have the dreaded clogged filter issue. Also hear a skipping noise coming from the pump so it could be a combination of both. Can debris be sucked or blown out through the port hole behind the valve body or am I screwed? Thanks.
Thanks for getting back to me. I finally got the tranny out but have one more question. Can the filter be removed without having to take out all of the internal parts? I see that it is at the bottom but looks like alot of stuff in the way. @@ellayonTV
Thanks. I got it done but now have another problem. After putting the car back together, now it won't move as if it's locked in Park. The shifter moves but the car won't budge. I tried pushing it while in neutral but it rocks back and forth just as if locked in Park gear. Any ideas? @@ellayonTV
I may have to do this as when I tried to replace a pump cover. The other internals slide out. I was able to place them back in and they turned freely. But the vehicle does not move in any gear now. I’ve been told it’s near impossible to place the clutches properly back in once they slide out even a quarter inch Also will you have the part 2 for this?
You may have the same issue I do where I was unable to prime the pump as I had to use silicone due to my coworker/customer using a coarse wire wheel meant for the exterior case on the sealing surface for the pump when I advised them to wait till I got a finer grit sanding drum for the dremel so I could control it and not go into the sealing area and just do the angled lip on the outside, I had several other issues prior and so I also had the whole thing apart, all the way to the input shaft, and I shoved a hose down the pump feed to back flush the filter, I think I may have messed up and pushed the filter off of the seal on the pump side though and am going to use my wish/eBay borescope to look through the baffle hole and see if the filter is seated (already took the valve body off to attempt to plug the pump output and suck from the test port to prime it along with priming the filter and possibly checking if the pump shaft is spinning it if the borescope will fit through there)
Que onda. I had a loose bushing on the pump cover side. By the drum. And lost reverse. Then I out it back after replacing bushing but now it just revs. Before I installed the bushing it would go all gears but reverse.
