- I LOVE CREEK FISHING IN THE SUMMER!!! There is NOTHING better than wading in waist high water on a hot summer day throwing some lures out for some beautiful bronzies! Today, I went out to a branch of the Potomac River on a mission to find which bait is the most effective for these fiesty little buggers. Armed with tubes and crankbaits, I covered a ton of water in hopes of unlocking the bronzeback pattern!

Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could th-cam.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.

Come to Northern MI. The smallies get fat off the invasive Round Gobies. If you put in time you can easily get a few 5+ pounders. Last year a smallie close to 10 lbs was caught up here.

In case anyone is wondering, when the water temperature gets warm in a river it actually increases a smallmouths metabolism, forcing them to feed more. They aren't like largemouths in ponds/lakes.
It's a huge misconception that they get finicky and won't chase bait in the heat. Honestly I've found it to be quite opposite. The days I've walked out and thought "Damn, waters pretty chilly today" are the days I struggle the most. I haven't quite figured them out on those mid summer mornings after a colder night. Today it was 95f air temp, 73f water temp and I caught them exclusively shallow on topwater. The last fish I caught was just after noon before I decided to call it a day. Granted it was a pre-storm front so they were particularly aggressive. Also you'll find smaller plastics like the tube Mike was fishing there catches more quantity for sure, but as you can see first hand, the quality isn't the best. His assumption that smallies don't get big in the Potomac is wild to me. I'm not able to find any records, but you can find plenty of videos of people catching 3's and 4's out of there. And those 3lb river smallmouth fight like they're a 7lb largemouth. By far the most important aspect in smallmouth bass fishing in a river is casting accuracy. If you can't put a lure in that small ambush window that a waiting smallmouth can see, you just simply won't catch them.
thanks for the video. I have a small shallow river by my house. I caught 2 16 inch smallies on a jighead and white grub. I was eagerly waiting for a video with a similar body of water and someone who knew what they were doing to show me what they use. Thanks again boss. Tight lines.

I watched a video once on how to make modifications to your tubes and one of my favorites was taking a pair of scissors and making a cut down the side of the tube helping the hookset. with the cut your hook only has to go through one side of the softbait and not two giving you a higher hook percentage.

My favorite kind of fishing!! My Fav lure is a combo of those two. The Rebel crawfish or wee crawfish. I like them because they float but you can make them run deep if you want.

I caught a total of over 20 smallmouth in 2 days of camping, swimming, fishing, and canoeing on the Elk River, and I caught most of them on a Rebel crawfish. You should try using that.

This past weekend I used the Z-man Finese TRD in Green Pumpkin on a 1/10 ounce head in the Buffalo National River and Bear Creek in Arkansas. I caught a of brownies (smallmouth) and goggle-eye (rock bass) of all different sizes. They were all caught in current or deep holes. Very surprised how well the lure performed. Brown bass and some of the sunfish caught in clear water creeks and rivers are some of the most beautiful fish. I agree that wade fishing in small rivers and creeks is some of most relaxing and fun fishing there is.
Impressive day on the Potomac again.
