my first rifle was a Stevens, manufactured in Germany. I got it in 1955 and my dad was a WW-II vet from the Navy. I learned to shoot on one very much like yours, but a little earlier, I think. The training was out on by someone at Fort Bliss - I believe it was an NRA course. I never learned about the handgun until Obama was elected. Now I've got a collection. Learning on a 22, one round at a time was very good. Mine would shoot 22 Short, Long or Long Rifle. It was clip fed. Labeled a clip, but looked like a magazine.

I had a DSA FAL blow up in my face that was manufactured wrong, the firing pin was broken off inside the bolt and when it was load and the bolt was released it kaboomed and parts and the mag blow out and my face hurt a little after the fact. Needless to say I will never buy a DSA FAL.

I doubt you’ll see this Larry but if you do . The Winchester that you probably had as a child if it had the longer thinner barrel would be a Winchester model 67 the model 67A is essentially the same gun like you said except it has the shorter thicker barrel .
The reason I could pick out the difference you mentioned is I own both my great grandfathers model 67 and my great uncles model 67A and those are the exact differences . In the guns . The other thing I’ve noticed is most model 67s were made prior to having barrel markings

Diemaco / Colt Canada is in my top 5 best for sure . My dad gave me C8 14.5 with Fixed Carry handle Upper on my 25th Bday . He got it in the early 90s .
I've ran 100 rounds or so. It was used when my dad bought it . He never found a matching Diemaco Lower before Colt bought Diemaco .
L119A1 , L119A2 and MRR 11.6" are my dream ARs.

My first rifle to shoot was a 67A also. It was my grandpa's that he paid $4.00 for brand new. It had a longer barrel and the fore end had a groove on each side. It is still around and I bought another one that was close to it for my kids.

My one accidental discharge was mitigated by muzzle down, safety inside the trigger housing of a deer rifle, changed my whole attitude to safety. A great rule to keep at the front of your mind.

My dad got the same 22 when he was 9 years old. $7 in the late 20's. It was handed to me when I was 6 to learn how to shoot. Glad to say I still have it.

Larry, I had the joy of carrying a Belgian FAL, not SA, unfortunately, during my tour in North Africa recently. My Marines were awestruck at a real battle rifle in .308.

I also found out I was left eye dominat when I started training with professional trainers. First guy said "you have to shoot left handed now!" my go to instructor taught me that being right handed was not a problem so I now am comfortable shooting with either hand with pistol, rifle, or shotgun. Get competent training! A tip left eye dom, right handed, peep sights on rifle when you shoot right handed way EZ

My father, also a WW II vet, gave me my first .22 when I was 6 or so. It was a .22 semiautomatic with a 5 round magazine. I can confirm that trigger control was not a thing in the late 50’s. Muzzle direction was absolutely critical but I would walk through the woods with the gun on safe, muzzle down and my finger on the trigger. Simpler time.

Yeah my first 22 was a sa22 browning grade 3, my dad won it for a dollar raffle. He said it was mine but it was his and when I used it , it was mine. Well about 5 years into my military career my dad sold it. Well what can you do, its gone. Well recently I found a Japanese murkuro made browning and it is a grade 3 also. I has a cantilever scope mount and has a leopould 4x fine cross hair scope with 1 inch on it. The wood has great lines and color. I'm working on buying copies of guns I have lost over the years.

Winchester 67A was my first rifle too along with my dad's first. I still have it to this day intending to continue it with my kids. Mine is slightly different than yours with a hooded front sight and sling swivels. Mine also appears to have a thinner and longer barrel.

When i turned 13 my dad bought me a 9422 carbine. Long or short. Shot EVERYTIME! Even with no maintenance. Unfortunately it was stolen. But, i didnt start collecting guns til 2000. My 1st gun i BOUGHT for myself was a ruger 10-22... i have one also for my daughter... then a Walther P38 stamped ac43. It also has all matching serial#s and i believe mosin stamp above serial # on slide. It looks like a X. My second firearm was a Savage FCNS 111 in 06. Accu trigger and stock. The next was a Polish Tantal... Then a Rock River spec ops II carbine. Sold it. I just started building my own AR15s after that. Now i also have a 1970 circle 11 AKM which a friend built for me. I currently am building 2 Romanian ak pattern. One a 1968 md65 underfolder the other is a 1994 md88 aims74... not finished yet... i have more...

Stories we hear about gun people and their past. Ex-military and just civilians shooters. How Larry's mom got ride of all the guns in their home after his father died when Lasrry went into the military. His first rifle/firearm. Means SO MUCH to most gun people. Especially if it was the one their father gave or bought them. Add Larry's father passed away. Perhaps Larry's mom was very much NOT a gun person. Possibly anti-gun but just loved his father enough to marry...being a WW2 soldier.
My mother's father was a General in Army Intelligence. He passes and his military items and sidearm was removed from the home. DMAN!!!!
I think many civilian girls fall for that image of the heroic military man but are really anti-gun people. Ironic. Against war/battle. There's so much attached to that gun (s). The Japanese believe Samurai had a lot of their soul attached to their swords. If they did evil with the sword they had to destroy it...and kill themselves. I'm sure the same can be said of a western military man's sidearm. Whether or not they ever went into battle. Some things you just don't give away. Uniforms, letters, medals and sidearm.

...larry had to be so pissed about that. Probably always will be. Now it's too late. No way to track down his first rifle and the other guns. The few his father had then.

My term of service with the Russians is coming to an end. The US needs me more. My plan would be to chill out in WV with some friends or some place like that and collect on my pension from Gazprom, while advising you guys on China and Iran. I am not looking for a fight, just peace and security.

Is the Colt Canada mag like that to prevent snow from getting into the receiver? It looks like those horizontal protrusions could at least help with that a bit.
