This is partially true. There's been many iterations of can opener design. Some cut from the top, some from the side. Do a image search of the patent and you'll see. It seemed like can openers with the blade horizontal to the handle are meant for side cutting, and the ones with the blade at an angle for the top.
@@anthonymorris8891 I'm just glad somebody else understands. Sometimes you want the lid so you can drain water out first. The can openers designed for this usually have a little lip or hook to get under the lid too.
The only reason I don't open cans like that is because I'm worried about the edge being super extra sharp. I just use the lil hook thing on the can opener to pull the top up
This is my reasoning too. It leaves the sharp edge on top where its easier to cut you and easier to cut your plastic garbage bag which was not a thing they had back then. The other way you can safely put the lid back in the can. No surprise sharp edges.
My mum would open cans like this, very tired I do the washing up one night grab an opened can on the side meant that be rinsed out only but I wash it and slice my thumb down to the bone. Not only that but I have irreversible nerve damage in that thumb but hey, let's all open the cans this was is it's "by design" in the frickin 1800s!
Safety notice, opening cans that way leaves sharp edges on the top of the can instead of inside the can so you have to be more careful when disposing of them
There's a different style of can opener called a safety can opener that opens and can like this but doesn't leave a Sharp edge. It cuts the seal between the lid and can instead of cutting through the can
The issue with that method, and why a lot of people adopted the sidegrip, is because the proper way leaves a sharp edge left on the can, while the modern popular method leaves a rounded edge. Working in kitchens, most rotarys are now designed to open cans with rounded edges as fast as possible because it meets safety standards.
Not only that, but opening from the top also slices through the side of the cap of the can, leaving slivers of extremely sharp metal that can end up in food when the can is poured out
Not like opening it the other way makes it not sharp most just aren't gonna start tonguing up the can 😂 but yeah having basically a can knife isn't ideal for food
@@darkflame4158 that's because your cutting too low. The cans have a level on them indicated by the label and so if your cutting too much label you will have leakages.
@@andrewsanders17 I’m actually not 😅I cut just below the rim… it’s probably the fact I can’t keep it steady, the can opener grips when it’s sideways but doesn’t when it’s the proper position
I imagine this method also eliminates the lip that catches the food you are trying to slide out of the can. That lip is probably supposed to stay there so you don't cut yourself. But not needing to spoon food over that lip, especially sauces will be nice.
@@idrinkwine There was a opener designed to open cans this way but you don't see it advertised anymore. Maybe becauase of people cutting themselves but I am grasping for straws on that. All I know for sure is I love this guys videos and all the good info he puts out.
I've BEEN doing it correctly and was recently told by several people that I was doing it wrong. Thanks Jordan for confirming that I wasn't opening my cans like a crazy person!
When learning how to use a can opener as a kid I did the same thing, but I was told the right way was to do it from the side. After watching this (not knowing it was about can openers) with someone who tried to correct me, I was issued an apology for an incorrect correction. So I kind of relate. 😂
This is great. One problem. Can openers don't last as long from my experience I think the metal is thicker on the sides. I just use it the way I always have and I don't turn it all the way once it's lifted I just peal it back
I remember learning this when I was a little kid. I enjoyed hanging out and spending time with alot of random elderly people in my neighborhood more than being with other kids. Miss Sue had worked for Jimmy Carter when he was a governor and when he ran for presidency. I remember watching her do this with a can of green beans and being mind blown. To this day I still do it this way when using a regular can opener in memory of how she taught me this.
@williamlevison9966 pretty much. I haven't seen anyone else do it but me. Mainly because the sharp edges aren't exposed vertically as they are horizontally. This is one of those inventions where it was made for a specific intent, and people decided how they wanted to use it collectively.
FOR ONCE I KNEW THIS ONE!!! This is the way my grandmas been doing it for as long as I can remember. I love the looks I get from people when I do it in front of them for the very first time! 🤣😂
This is a good trick for MOST cans, not all cans. Some cans are completely filled to the brim and spill all over the place of you open it this way. There are even cans that have REAL thick walls that break your can opener... I know this from experience.
I use the can opener the "correct" way. The only problem is that it leaves a very sharp edge and sometimes shreds the label so you have to look out for the paper in the food.
Also wears em out way faster, there honestly ment to be used how we already do (majority of people I know) but he is right in the fact that the early ones were designed for that specific way
Yes, I knew that. I prefer it the other way because I grew up in a home that recycled, and the recycling center required cans to be clean and labeless when turned in. Opening a can like that makes it way easier to cut yourself during the washing up afterwards, especially when you had to reach into a sink full of the things, so we always opened them the other way.
@@hmbrew2754 Oh, I already know. We did it though because there was a hefty fine attached for not doing it. It was stupid, wasted everyone's time, and I'm pretty sure they're still doing it, but the government's gotta pretend that it's doing something, am I right? Plus they can charge you out the nose if you disobey, so...
My Mom explained that the reason why we do it the first way (vertical , instead of horizontal) is so that the lid is sharp and not the edges of the can you just opened. So, when the lid is sharp, you can fit it Inside the bottom of the container (after you're finished using all the contents inside) and the edges remain safely inside the can. You can always use the hook as a way to pry up the lid. But thanks for the tip. 👍
I just commented and then read this. your 100000000% right. lived the experience the other way. I'd rather get a knick on my finger at worst. read my comment if you get the chance and can find it.
I've used the can opener both ways. The problem with that way is that if you want to use the can for something else it leaves a very sharp rim. Also it loses its structural integrity with the lip gone. Also if you don't remove the label it can grind label bits and put them in the can when you lift it off.
Fun fact: they actually do make a can opener that does not use a blade at all. It actually peels the edge off of the can so that you can lift the lid off with no sharp edges.
I got one recently and let me say as someone who uses half a can and then saves for later use, GAME CHAGER. It actually closes again (though not shalf stable!!) so I don't need to seran wrap it
So my mom had one, but never used it. My dad did (they are divorced so at one house my parent used it, the other they didn’t). At my dad’s house, I’d use it when helping him cook or for can soup when I wanted a snack after school. I’m helping my mom cook one day and she asks me to open a can. I used the automatic can opener and she gets mad, saying “don’t use that, it’s more dangerous”. I mean I was twelve so not super old but like old enough to open a can and cook for myself. I don’t know if she thought I was more dangerous or just I was lazy but like why are you mad at me for using a piece of kitchen equipment that we own? She never used it so why do you care that I do?
Yeah, except for that sharp edge this would be a good idea. Also makes it hard to cover the can if you needed to. There is another type of opener that fractures the metal rim and leaves no sharp edge AND you can use the lid to reseal the can if you don't use it all at once.
indeed, i bought one (single handle as well so no trip needed) for myself to test out and gave a new one to the parents after 6 months of safe use. it cuts the rim from the top so there only "sharp" edge is the lid that can be easily removed by the opener itself and disposed of immediately.
You shouldn't ever be "re-sealing" food in opened cans. Once opened it can spoil rapidly. If you really need to, you should transfer it's contents into tuppaware.
I just replaced my old can opener and I felt the need to add to this: Because of how we think the cans have been opened before (the first way Jordan showed us) theres actually manual openers designed to open that way. I tried opening it the "correct way", and not only was I unable to get the right grip, i started chipping the cutting edge. Make sure you confirm this yourselves.
This only works on the low ridged cans, but it's really good for them! Some with higher ridges you have to hold sideways and open it the way everyone is used to.
Also less accidental cuts in the “wrong way”. The bad way is safer and easier to keep stuff in the can for future use. His way is like, if you wanna use everything and you are sure as hell you aint gonna accidently cut yourself
@@phoebea i mean they taught us everything else from molecular gastronomy, to nutrition, to ice carving, but we still did use some can openers the wrong way apparently lol But yes, my knife skills are definitely significantly better 😅
That isn't in the curriculum because it's one of the worst ways to use that specific can openner. In fact it's NOT designed to work that way, so by NOT teaching you to do this they prevented you from learning something the wrong way.
Same here. Been doing this for decades at this point. Was told I was wrong a few times but it's kind of an obviously simpler way to do it and you never have to fish out the lid from the can.
this absolutely explains that issue I constantly had as a child with can openers slipping and just making a dent in the top of the can instead of actually cutting
Fun fact, there are also "smooth edge can openers" like the OXO can opener which unravels the folds created during the canning process. This means it never actually cuts the can and so you never have super sharp dangerous edges. It can be a little tricky the first couple times you use it but it's worth purchasing if you don't like handling the sharp edges for personal or dexterity reasons.
@@MissingRaptor Had one at my house as a kid and didn't even know about the other one until I was older. Saw the Technology Connections video too tho.
@@frozenlillypad2070 Cans appeared by the 1770s but it wasn't until another 70 years later in 1855 that the first general can opener was produced (until then it was hack it open with a knife or use a key to roll back the top like some cans still do today). That one being the lever-tool you use to bite into the can around the lid over and over until it's chewed off
@@frozenlillypad2070 Franklin's Lost Expedition also ties directly in as they set off a decade before that can opener and the tins they had were soldered with lead. The men froze solid while hauling furniture through the arctic because their malnourished and leaded brains thought the desk would be important
IMPORTANT NOTE IF YOU OPEN YOUR CAN LIKE THIS: the top edge of your can is now as razor sharp as the lid would be if you opened it from the standard side-mount position. This edge can and will cut, and is just as dangerous. If you work in food service opening #10 cans, I’d suggest opening side-mount as normal so you can pinch the lid within the can body like usual.
There's another type of can opener often referred to as a safety can opener which attacks the lip of the can instead, so there are no sharp edges once the can is open, and as a bonus, the lid can sit nicely back on the top, so you can use it to help keep the food fresh in the fridge, if you don't use the whole can.
And never makes contact with the food so always clean. Had my Lantana one off amazon years ago and it's still working great. I think most of the negative reviews must be from people who don't realise they've opened the can as it still looks sealed lol
the reason we open it from the inside of the ridge and not around the outside is to prevent sharp edges, and the wall of the can is thicker than the inset lid. also if you don't go gung ho on cutting the lid, it lifts for you and you won't cut yourself on the lid. cutting a hole into the inset lid helps your opener last longer. always wash the top of the lid before you cut into it because you have no clue what nastiness and dirt is on there.
Dude I’m literally going through all your shorts, copy and pasting them into a section of my notes so I can constantly go back and check them out many many moons from now when I need it. You’re a badass lol

I've literally been yelled at by my parents and grandparents by opening the cans this way. They said I was going to break the can opener by apparently using it the correct way.
This isn't the right way though unless you like razor sharp cans and metal bits in your food. Cutting the inset lid also is easier on your can opener so it won't dull as fast.
@@EmergencyChannel opened cans this way all my life, never had metal bits or cut myself on the can. The only time I've been worried about metal bits was when I was doing it the wrong way because it endet up jagged as fuck, because guess what, they aren't designed to cut the sideways method. You get a more smooth, less jagged edge. The literal only issue is that sometimes little bit of the label gets in the stuff and even that can easily be solved by paying attention before pouring the contents of the can somewhere else because the bit of label is on top
So original versions of can labels were made with easily dislodged glue and/or pull tabs so that you could remove the label, and they often even had instructions, recipes, or facts about the food on them. People often removed the labels and stored like cans in a box with one marking label on it. However, companies wanted to save money, people were getting more lazy and didnt want to deal with the labels, and now things are overly attached.
@@brentmcardle2875 id have to do a deep dive to find that out precisely, but it was more or less some random company changing, then slowly the others following. However, there are a FEW hold outs that still use the old label methods, mostly in the baking ingredients business, but still, you can find them rarely. That is, however, why labels still often have glue only right along the connection seam, even if its more glue and stronger glue than before.
@@ConnorSinclairCavinOld conversation, but I do notice this with tuna cans. It's really easy to remove the labels before opening. Always marvel at the convenience compared to other types of cans.

This is partially true. There's been many iterations of can opener design. Some cut from the top, some from the side. Do a image search of the patent and you'll see. It seemed like can openers with the blade horizontal to the handle are meant for side cutting, and the ones with the blade at an angle for the top.

The one in the video has the blade at an angle, as does the one I have.

@@Nuggie_terpfessor You're cutting metal either way. It's just a choice between whether you want the lid to be sharp or the can itself.
You also will have to use a strainer to remove excess liquids from the can instead of the top lid.

My bro here, giving the real information to the people. Thank you.
I’m more concerned about the mess, every time I try the top method it spills part of the liquid inside
@@darkflame4158 that's because your cutting too low. The cans have a level on them indicated by the label and so if your cutting too much label you will have leakages.

Not all can openers will work that way. Also you then have exposed sharp edges on the can. And you are the best thing on the internet.
I imagine this method also eliminates the lip that catches the food you are trying to slide out of the can. That lip is probably supposed to stay there so you don't cut yourself. But not needing to spoon food over that lip, especially sauces will be nice.

Does everyone else just use can openers vertically????
@williamlevison9966 pretty much. I haven't seen anyone else do it but me. Mainly because the sharp edges aren't exposed vertically as they are horizontally. This is one of those inventions where it was made for a specific intent, and people decided how they wanted to use it collectively.

It also makes it easier to use the lid for draining excess fluids from vegetables and such as well.

I've used the can opener both ways. The problem with that way is that if you want to use the can for something else it leaves a very sharp rim. Also it loses its structural integrity with the lip gone. Also if you don't remove the label it can grind label bits and put them in the can when you lift it off.

Yeah, except for that sharp edge this would be a good idea. Also makes it hard to cover the can if you needed to. There is another type of opener that fractures the metal rim and leaves no sharp edge AND you can use the lid to reseal the can if you don't use it all at once.
I wouldn't leave food in a tin can. I would put it into either a bowl or a Tupperware container. Leaving food in a tin can can make it taste awful.

the reason we open it from the inside of the ridge and not around the outside is to prevent sharp edges, and the wall of the can is thicker than the inset lid. also if you don't go gung ho on cutting the lid, it lifts for you and you won't cut yourself on the lid. cutting a hole into the inset lid helps your opener last longer. always wash the top of the lid before you cut into it because you have no clue what nastiness and dirt is on there.

Looks like a good way to introduce label material into your food. It does look safer.
So original versions of can labels were made with easily dislodged glue and/or pull tabs so that you could remove the label, and they often even had instructions, recipes, or facts about the food on them. People often removed the labels and stored like cans in a box with one marking label on it.
