I’ve picked up on how people who speak with a lisp or speech impediment are almost instantly categorized as being developmentally delayed, though more often than not, that’s the only thing that is off about the way they express themselves with nothing else suggesting that they are. The speech impediment can affect so so much
I'm fairly certain the I have a subtle lisp, I struggle pronouncing words with the letter S and that struggle entangles itself with other words I pronounce after saying that formidable S word. This has caused people to talk to me like I'm a toddler using higher pitched speech. It also doesn't help the fact that I'm a ginger who are stereotyped as being idiotic.

same with me. i used to hate when i had to repeat myself so now i just naturally speak louder. the downsides of this is that it’s hard for me to tell how loud i am when im talking
I assume that your perception of low pitch is wrong based on your comment. Probably you think that low pitch is low audibility of sound. In fact, that's not true. Low pitch means the note of the voice is going down, not the volume of the voice. For example, if your normal speech sounds like F3 note, end your sentences with E3. (you don't necessarily have to lower it exactly one note; it's just an example) By the way if you are not really into music and don't know how notes sound higher or lower, you can find videos on youtube about that. I'm glad if that helped.
@@Hello-hh2tgWell this is simply false. Lower pitched voices ARE harder to hear, both because of how your vocal system has to form tones and because lower pitched noises in general ARE harder to hear & pick up on. You can experience this for yourself by simply searching up something like A1 to A5 sine wave. Also for lower pitched voices, when needing to be heard (with strain) you need to drop your jaw low, speak loud, and end every sentence with a HIGHER note. In my personal experience, that does get a lot of people asking if I am Australian or a Zealander, funnily enough. The second best method I've found (for the original commenter), is to just speak in a HIGHER tone at all times. I have to strain pretty hard to talk "normally" so I try to stay in the mid-high bass or low alto range as little as I can (It's hard to hold a conversation like that). The best method is 100% changing your vocal flow's shape (I "cannon" my voice through the mouth) and sticking to your most comfortable speaking tone (I peak at F2 when speaking both loudly and quietly, and regular speach stays mostly in E2 and D2 {Yes this is my regular voice, yes I am a DB / SB Oktavist, and yes E2 is indeed the lowest note in bass [lowest 'normal' vocal range]} no matter inherit volume) then you will be heard very reliably, regardless of tone (source: I have a thing for etymology, and I also have a deep voice).

This is what got me to overcome my social anxiety, the difference between me two years ago vs me now makes me super proud of myself, like genuinely. It really does help having others who care though.

I feel like it's better to understand why you're not confident and get confident in the topic by researching rather than trying to change the way you speak. It can happen naturally if you are feeling the emotion you want to feel in the scenario
even when im super educated, its hard to think when i talk to people and i struggle to get my point across sometimes because of that. i get nervous really easily even if somebody doesnt realize it and my brain is basically shut off... i am trying to improve on this though..
I have a lot of incredibly intelligent friends who use extremely informal and slang-filled language, and I have met very shallow and not so bright people who do the opposite. I have had many instructors and have seen many public speakers use upward inflections despite being extremely knowledgeable and helpful. Do not assume guys, let people speak for themselves before you judge them based on something as trivial as their speech.
Only smart people can talk to dmb people. Cause they can simplify their explanations to talk to people. Example, some politicians public talk with villagers n normal people vs how they actually talk and negotiate with high level elites to get things done. Kids won't know this
One trick that has helped me significantly is trying your best to not make a speech mistake. You know when you speak and you mess up and you have to do that thing where you overemphasize how you can’t speak? Avoid that as much as possible. Then, your voice will become much more confident. Your words will be better to say. Timing is the next thing. Timing when to say word can help you achieve a more paced and noteworthy discussion.
As someone who does instructing, I intentionally use easier to understand phrases and verbiage so that the students have an easier time understanding the complex topics. Also, when I have to pause to think about what I’m saying so I phrase it accurately, I always just pause. I always try to avoid stalling words.
Sometimes i hate that im “seen” as social because when I don’t feel like talking everyone around me suddenly thinks im in a bad mood and something is wrong with me.
LITERALLY SAME- when im speaking to someone who seems good/i need them to like me for the first time, i always act "social" on instinct, and then whenever im just seen alone doing anything, people ask if im okay and ask why my voice is so monotone and sad
I’m here because sometimes people accuse me of being rude when I’m absolutely not. It happens at work and in my personal life. I’ve really tried to figure out what it is about my face or voice that comes off as rude when I’m actually unbothered or even in a great mood. I just don’t understand. It makes me flatten my tone and affect in order to avoid such situations, but doing that seems to actually encourage them sometimes.
I don't know you and your situation, but try smiling more; it shows friendliness, relatability and it reassures the other person that you are on good rerms with them. And of course, don't smile too much or too big. Hope this helps.
Lots of the time people read vibes by comparing arbitrary features of one person to another. It's inaccurate, but there isn't anything you can do to fix it. Other than finding people who are self conscious enough not to judge people in that way.
Use your voice and your body language to lie in order to trick stupid people into making correct assumptions about you for the wrong reasons, because they are immune to the right reasons.
Maybe you have resting ‘bee’ face and a flat tone of voice so you come across as uncaring and uninterested. On the bright side, you’ll have less facial wrinkles as you age.
I‘ve moved to work in another city in my country which is relatively small but my god the accent‘s difference really isolates you and makes you feel like a foreigner

I am completely mute and have been for my entire life, and this could NOT be truer. People constantly assume I’m either ‘too shy’, have nothing going on upstairs whatsoever, or simply could have nothing of value to say. The way everyone changes their tone & talks slower and simpler around me is infuriating-especially because I’m fluent in SEE, a language that’s pretty damn hard to learn, and I can express myself through writing in English. It’s they who can’t understand me, not the other way around, and that’s not my fault. When I try to write, they won’t give me the time, and when I sign to them they’re clueless. I have to dumb it down and shift towards pantomiming what I’m trying to say and even then, some people are too thick for it. It can really make a person resentful and frustrated as fuck (could you tell?) Thank you for bringing this up.
What helped me as am English speaker get a control of inflection was learning French. Since what separates a question from a statement in French is in the deflection. I can say the same words but with a deflection upward it is a question and downward is a statement. I found by implementing this technique in Mt native tounge, I portrayed more confidence and my words were treated more important than before.
It’s pretty much how inflection works in English too; it’s like the difference between a question, a rhetorical question, and a statement. For example: “Don’t you think?” Depending on whether it’s asked with an upward, flat, or downward inflection determines if it’s a question, rhetorical question, or a statement that you’re expected to agree with.
As a aspiring voice actor, this is really helpful! I’ve always known about tone of voice and everything, but choice of words and emphasis on certain vowels is something I’ve never taken into account.
At one point in my early teens I talked very slowly and had a deeper tone which calmed people instantly and they'd complain about how I'd make them sleepy. Ever since then I've changed my voice a lot where I talk faster then I used to and keep my voice higher then normal. I'm tempted to go back to the way I used to talk and even walk but one must adapt to the impatient ways of the world.
Lol I get that alot too but im told its relaxing and calming rather as a compliment. All you have to do tho is add a little more energy and dynamics to your voice when u want to be upbeat rather than change it as a whole

The amount of times I’ve used Ebonics/AAVE because I’m Black and people have perceived me to be dumb. Even though they copy the same phrases and words to be trendy, but it’s dumb when I do it. It shows the lack of education on dialects. Little do they know, I’ve always been an A student in Reading, Writing, Language Arts, etc. And top of my class. As soon as we get into a topic, all of a sudden their biases go away. I don’t care. There is no “proper" way to speak. It’s just Standard English in its form right now. Most of them don’t even realize they use AAVE all the time. It’s just wrong when Black people do it. Even though we made it a thing. All of them use the word "cool" and that comes from Black Jazz musicians in the 20’s-30’s, as well as "groovy". Even "For real" is AAVE. But they perceive whatever they want, to be "proper"

This video actually goes into detail and bridges the gap between when people say its all about perception. Its interesting how someone could use this for social engineering
And of course, ALL of this is up for interpretation. For example, the use of fancy words CAN indicate someone that's highly education, but more often it's someone that is highly pretentious, or even someone PRETENDING to be educated. You see this a lot of court rooms when you have everyday street criminals addressing a judge, or if a worker is having an annual performance review. When people see videos like these, they have to understand that NO ONE THING is going to tell you everything about the person, you have to take in ALL of it, and then make the proper assessment.
Sometimes I use big words, that come out of nowhere. And I also sound like a fusion between Goofy and Mickey. My own sister said, that I sound like a damn cartoon, goofy ahh character. And I also do not know how to control my volume, I am either too quiet or too loud. She also thinks that I have autism.
nah you seem fine. you don’t know how your friends feel about the way you talk so they probably aren’t negative like your sister, siblings are just like that. also the volume thing is common for a lot of people especially if you live in a big area with lots of background noise
This is something I picked up subconsiously and I'm sure many others but it's very intresting to think about. What you say doesn't matter, how you say doesn't matter, who you are to say something matters. Become something and they will listen to you no matter what
Its all kinda like a mixed bag honestly. Its not either or. You have to say the right things in the correct way to minimize hurting feelings or offending.
It's worth noting that all of this affects how we are perceived, yet it has no substantial correlation with who we are or what we are like. Most of the time, isong these cues to judge someone leads to inaccurate results. Be careful trusting a silky smoothe voice if what it says is questionable. And maybe trust a higher pitch (perhaps simply feminine) voice if it speaks reason.

You mention these obvious things without explaining why. our assumptions don't come from nothing. for example, why do you think lower pitch leads people to assume more authority and trustworthiness? which half of the population has typically deeper voice? why are high pitched and soft voices seen as less credible? despite the fact that it's just somebody's natural voice and has nothing to do with their capabilities? the same goes for vocabulary, speed, which are affected by level of education (directly tied to money) and speech impediments or other disabilities. it's crazy how much these biases affect our perception of other people without us realizing.
there kinda is an explanation for these biases, but that'd be having to bring up the overwhelming historical onstretch of the certain p-word people don't like to hear

It has rarely steered me wrong, but I get that it can be bad to be hyper critical, but listening to how people speak, observing their body language, it's been useful for informing my judgments about whether or not this stranger I've encountered is what I call a "high risk" person. By that I mean people with habits that attract problems. It doesn't have to be nefarious, just any extra troubles that might follow someone that I don't want to be around. Solution: raise your base volume

Use your voice and your body language to lie in order to trick stupid people into making correct assumptions about you for the wrong reasons, because they are immune to the right reasons.

i hate that people associate my heavy balkan accent to being unknowledgeable with english or being generally illiterate and dumb
I mumble and have an accent 😂. Shit.
@@jasond.b-w if you dont mind me asking, how is being mute like ? does your mouth not work or do you struggle to voice the words ? genuinely asking
I like when someone begins a sentence with, "Do you know what I am saying?" I am instantly impressed.
For example:
“Don’t you think?”
Depending on whether it’s asked with an upward, flat, or downward inflection determines if it’s a question, rhetorical question, or a statement that you’re expected to agree with.
The way you linked your arguments was very satisfying, good job 😊

As a aspiring voice actor, this is really helpful! I’ve always known about tone of voice and everything, but choice of words and emphasis on certain vowels is something I’ve never taken into account.
At one point in my early teens I talked very slowly and had a deeper tone which calmed people instantly and they'd complain about how I'd make them sleepy. Ever since then I've changed my voice a lot where I talk faster then I used to and keep my voice higher then normal. I'm tempted to go back to the way I used to talk and even walk but one must adapt to the impatient ways of the world.
People are just mean
Lol I get that alot too but im told its relaxing and calming rather as a compliment. All you have to do tho is add a little more energy and dynamics to your voice when u want to be upbeat rather than change it as a whole
My dad is from Mexico, mom is from my town but has spanish lineage. So I speak English and Spanish, yet, I grew up watching a lot of TV so I feel I speak how most do on television. Also, have lived in my town my entire 45 years of life.. yet most people ask me where I'm from because I don't sound like everyone in this city.. and they also all assume I'm caucasian 😮 shrugs
Lets be real tho. Black people have waaaaay too many slang words. Im half black and im way behind unless I listen to rap. Too many damn slang words. Its ridiculous
@@nonexistenthandle9922 If you think there’s too much slang, then keep yours mainly relevant to your regional or ethnic culture like every other normal person does. Pop culture constantly makes it seem like black people don’t have variable slang in a country where almost 4 million square miles are split into 50 culturally distinct regions, just so they can commodify the language easier. No black person is ever using black slang from every single region in America, that’s the whole reason why regional accents and terminology exists in Black America to this day.

Very interesting video. I have a deep voice with a wide vocab. I get told that I'm posh sometimes but I regard myself as quite common.
I change register sometimes, such as during phone calls or when I feel the need to sound very clear. I know most of the phonetic alphabet and use it when I see it neccessary
If you get someone speaking enough, or just listen enough and pay attention, people reveal who and how they are. It doesn't take very long. But yes, give a chance, be patient, sure. But then eventually when you do it, then you're just going to discover that there's no ground. You're endlessly falling forever and it's great. But yeah, taking that leap is really difficult. It's not bullshit, it's a badic function of mammals and birds.
Personally, i like to try and mix more exquisite words with slang (the mixture varies depending on my mood, i've noticed)
I feel like it helps normalize more advanced/articulated speech, especially when you have an exact word to express just the right meaning and feeling that you're aiming for
Sentence structure, by the way, is something that didn't get mentioned in this video, but IS a facet of speaking
Which, i just made use of in the line above, putting "by the way" before continuing to explain
As for it's effects, i think that's yet to be explored, but hey, that's something to explore in one's free time
Something I've noticed as someone who has a wide vocabulary and uses complex terms when expressing my thoughts is that people often don't associate those things with intelligence. Instead, they associate it with arrogance and "trying to look smart". I still don't really know the true reason for this. Maybe insecurity, seeing someone who seems smarter than them makes them feel small and act defensive. Maybe prior experience with arrogant people who speak the same way out of pride. Maybe some combination of both. It can get pretty frustrating to deal with.
It's probably because they don't understand the words your saying, most people have a small vocabulary
So you using words they don't know makes them feel dumb
@@thedudecalledalan9095 Choosing to use big words with small vocabulary people makes you dumb. If you're intelligent you can pick up on other's intellect and well, your vocabulary is so vast you can match anyone.
@@templeofdelusion I never bothered to learn big words
I'm perfectly content with being average
@@templeofdelusion wait why you calling me dumb but not op

My takeaway: I'd be living on easy mode if I talked like Barry White.
