But when things get serious they can look sharp, particularly in fight scenes. Most shonen series already has the characters in a sharpen style to indicate the cool atmosphere. But Fairy Tail gives a more slice of life atmosphere which you would assume that if you have not seen the series.

I remember reading an article on how mashima was excited because EZ was made fully digital and it made it very easier for him to have multiple projects at once. So I assume his artstle changes especially when it got more clean in yhe later stages was because digital helps him to find what he likes best.

One element that people forget about manga artstylle evolution especially for long running shonen series with a long running anime adaptation is that the anime can influence the manga.
We have bleach as an example where Kubo stated in interview that he did pick up a few things on how Masashi Kudo (Bleach anime character designer) drew the characters. And Kubo himself stated that he evolved his artstyle to match the anime.
Like of course Kubo still did this own thing but a part of what affected his art evolution is also the anime.

The backgrounds are an odd one. More detail doesn't always equate to a better background. Many artists will use varying levels of detail to draw the reader's eye to important elements, imply depth by having less detail and definition in objects further away to simulate light scattering and water in the atmosphere / mist. I'm also not sure we can credit Fairy Tail's backgrounds to Mashima because most manga artists have a crew of assistants that typically add effects, scanlines, fill blacks and who draw the backgrounds so that the named artist can focus primarily on character art and actually meet the brutal deadlines of the manga industry.

What I'm surprised you didn't mention is what happened with his artstyle after Fairy Tail. At first, you can see the gigantic influence of One Piece, and later Mashima develops his own, iconic style, but I think in the "6 stage" a problem started rising. From then on, his characters kept getting more generic and the faces got softer. Before, the characters were able to be both cute and intimidating, but now it all looks very chibi-like, not to mention that I see more and more drastic anatomy mistakes in his art.
And of course, artstyle changes, and if you put the terrible anatomy aside, Mashima's new style works just fine with Eden's Zero, but Fairy Tail? It's completely different, and personally I will ALWAYS prefer the older style for how iconic and memorable it was. Nowadays, it's not really special compared to all the anime out there...

This is a very simplified explanation, but on the subject of Mashima vs. Ueda, one of the biggest distinguishers (and things that make Ueda's style feel more 'generic') is that Mashima tends towards more exaggerated shapes and proportions in his characters. Yes, the art got more detailed over time, but it still has more unconventional proportions when you look at things like the size of the forehead, more narrow or extremely board shoulders, and elongated torsos. The shapes of the bodies themselves still follow the same general construction from his earlier works which doesn't always follow realistic body structure. It gives a sense of intentional imbalance that makes Mashima's work stand out even amongst other manga or artists who are trying to get close to his style. It's an intentional use of shape language as a way to both communicate character traits and simplify anatomy in a charming way. If you look at Ueda's style, you'll see that it balances out a lot of those exaggerations while also adding in more realistic anatomy. While this is good on a technical level, it has an entirely different charm to it (one that is more common because it has more basis in realism which is the root of all stylization). Neither style is necessarily better than the other, but i personally prefer Mashima's older works because they feel distinct and probably helped greatly in making Fairy Tail such a recognizable anime even to those who never watched/read it.
As a lot of other people pointed out, this has a lot to do with the fact that FT was such a long-running series and Mashima's influences changed over time! Early FT feels undeniably influenced by the shounen of its age (particularly one piece) and as the industry has shifted, so has the style of FT. It's a similar phenomenon to how animation studios also tend to 'modernize' or make characters look more generic when adapting manga to animation because its easier to do that than train a whole studio to do a new style from scratch. It's possible that Mashima sought out Ueda specifically to infuse FT with a more modern style, and that's why the shift is so noticable.

What I adore about Mashima's characters the most is his understanding of shape language. It's true that this s more so relevant to the earlier chapters than the current ones, but nonetheless the fact still stands. For example, both Laxus and Elfman are extremely broad and have lots of spiked shapes, yet Elfman always looks nicer and more inviting. You can always tell who is who even when entirely in shadow purely because of their unique idle poses and how their individual details make them stand out. I think my favourite example of this is Laxus' coat and headphones. It's just such recognizable shape.

one thing that i see a lot of people shit on (but somewhat valid) is that Mashima keeps copying previous character designs in his new works, like all o fthem have a big boobed blonde main character, his new works "Gate of Nightmares" and "Dead Rock" has obvious Fairytail clones

Like dude nothing happened, the current artstyle is the same for years now. Just in the beggining it was a bit different, it had a bit of touch of one piece, but luckily Mashima was able do develop his artstyle beyond that. Yeah, development that's the word you are looking for.
Srsly why such a question? If you mean the current 100 yrs quest then that's on the studio cause allmost every studio has it's own animation style (exception is A1 pictures, which animates the characters to look as close as possible to the manga, and that's one of the reasons I love that studio so much).

It went from one piece esq, to more generic shonen. The way the manga ends, art style wise feels akin to your typical sports anime characters. It’s always fun to see where an artist starts out, and then finishes with their series. It feels very similar to the soul eater manga. It’s almost like once these manga get picked up as anime, their style becomes less Quirky and more conventional

Will you talk about the changes of the art style for the anime series? I remember when I watched Grand magic games episodes, halfway through they changed the art style, and it makes the characters look more like a 2D than 3D, which I disliked so much, and I am always wondering what happened that time and hoping they will change it back, but they never did
And because of that change I barely even watch any episode after that, can't stand the art style 😢

Early Fairy Tail art is giving me Oda vibes with how it's drawn. It's something I don't think I really saw in the anime at all whereas this reminds me of One Piece in its art I think it has to do with the way limbs are drawn and somewhat in the face. It's different enough where I'd never mistake it for One Piece but similar enough to remind me of One Piece. I do really like it.
But I do love Hiro Mashima's art style and his fashion for the characters. Much like Bleach and One Piece cover art, I love to see the outfits that Hiro Mashima comes up with for his characters

His anatomy has gotten so incredibly bad and Im so ??? HOW. Out of curiosity I looked into the final Edens Zero chapter and that was. some god awful paneling
I probably sound very harsh here but I still absolutely love his older art, I still look through his first Fairy Tail artbook with so much love so seeing in what direction his style has developed just makes me sad :U I was actually planning on making a video on his artstyle too and Im more motivated to do it now after watching yours and I really enjoyed your video!

Well... I prefer old Mashima's art style. Like in the end of RAVE master and the beginning of Fairy Tail. + for me, Fairy Tail manga was special and really cool from the beginning until the tournament arc. It had its flaws but wasn't boring or embarrassing to read. After that, I guess it's the decline. My problem with this story is that sometimes we focus too much on other characters in the guild while, honestly, I don't care of them. + the lack of direction in the story is somehow boring because, there's almost no goal. The story could have been finished in the first chapters with Lucy just being a FT's member. So like until Gajeel kidnaps her. But as I said earlier, the plot seemed cool for me until the arc tournament even though sometimes it was badly executed. The gate arc and stuff with dragon's return during the tournament arc had so much potential but it failed. As for the initial subject which is the artstyle. I believe his old artstyle was gorgeous and was part of the manga's identity. When the artstyle changes, this identity changes as well and I don't recognize the spirit of the Manga. In some cases, the change of artstyle is related with draw improving as seen in AOT and Haikyuu, but in the Manga. Which is funny because I liked how they improved in the Manga but not in the anime. Indeed : in my opinion, the change of artstyle between S3 and S4 with the change of studio ruined my experience of the end of AOT while I've already read it all and liked so much. The same goes for Haikyuu which I consider the s1-s2-s3 like the best seasons with top quality of animation and artstyle but once we got to S4 It never felt the same. For me slight differences like these are important and can ruin the experience and the feel. It's like watching a TV show for 2 seasons, with the MC actor being great. And then substituting the Mc actor with another and being completely lost and confused with what it has been shown because of the actor's change. It wouldn't make any sense.

Fairy Tail's artstyle is still my most favourite.
Along with artstyle, there's also the shift in story telling. When they made jokes in the early chapters, they hit easier because it is akin to a cartoon. However, when you have a sharper, more serious looking character, it's harder to laugh at them. It made me a little sad that Fairy Tail slowly lost the cartoon like charm towards the end, that had drawn me to it in the first place.

I honestly prefer his more recent style. As other people have pointed out, his early look looks too similar to "One Piece", and that was always very distracting to me.
A lot of people say that his current style is too generic, but honestly, I don't see it. As you yourself have pointed out, when he draws characters from other franchises, you can tell his style very quickly. How would that be possible if his style is really generic?
If anything, I think his main flaw in his current style is that his designs have become a bit too "kawai-fied". They have gone a bit too soft-looking, and they don't always match the tone of the story. That and, of course, that his main characters all tend to look too similar. Not out of a lack of skill, since you always find incredible designs in his villains and supporting cast, but rather that he seems to... "have a type", so to speak, that he seems to refuse to let go of.
