    with the shims there is a way to measure the gap as per the instructions, but there is no way check the gap once the starter is in place. You just have install the shims an hope you put enough of them and it works.
    I got lucky on my van the old starter didnt have any shims, I installed the new starter with no shims and it work perfect when I finally got it to crank over.
    My advice to anyone who has a no start, and think its a bad starter, check the ignition switch first. I replaced my starter for no reason. And these starters are very heavy, its not an easy job to replace one. To test the ignition switch is bad, find the starter solonoid wire under the dash (on mine it was red/purple) its a large about 10 gauge wire. I ran a large gauge wire from the battery positive and when you touch this wire to the starter solonoid wire the starter will crank over ( key in run position) . That will get you started everytime until you replace the ignition switch.

    I notice you use the straight shims how did that fit? I would think you would need the staggered shim since you have a 168 tooth flywheel being a van

      they worked well but i am not educated in how many shims to use. i only made the video to make people aware that shims can help fix this annoying problem., sorry i am not of more help :(

      Daniel Pacheco did you figure it out?

      thenamesjesus yes the starter I put in was ordered from amazon it looked exactly the same as the old one and was looked up using the same number on the old one.. nevertheless the starter was not the correct one for the vehicle. I even took it to a local mechanic to see if it was something wrong I was doing but they even told me it was bad.. I took my car to another mechanic I know for a second opinion and he was able to use the old starter and install another solenoid to the old starter and with that the car started just fine..I had to return the starter back to amazon.

    How did you know how many shims to use?

    • @rickyadames7714
      @rickyadames7714  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didnt know. I took 1 off when i removed the starter but i added 4 and then when that starter died due to an electrical problem later i found it worked with just 2 shims. There is a correct way to know how many to use but i do not know deh way

      Ricky Adames I think I saw someone use paint to see where the teeth made contact with the flywheel

      Yes, Eric The Car Guy has a vid. Measure the portrusion by painting the starter gear to see where it hits the flywheel and use shims as necessary to allow starter to properly engage the flywheel.
