    just wondering would belly wrapping the chains on this load made a difference in amount of securement or not really? just trying to get some knowledge on it, great vids keep them coming

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We could have, but it wouldn't have given any greater securement value. We wanted the chains forcing the piece into the cradles and onto the deck. sometimes chains when belly wrapped can work against The downward force that you could be applying. The belly wrapped straps were just a precaution to keep it from becoming a torpedo.

    looks like you and Pa was working hard! Question: What kind of pay per mile do these very heavy haul loads pay? like a range ........ is it in the 3-5.00 dollar a mile range?

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's a vicious, never ending cycle of work! We could work a lot less, if we didn't give a shit about our equipment, but that's not us! Lol. Not to sound like a pretentious prick, but I wouldn't even start my truck for $5/mile. Every load varies drastically, because there is no real "industry standard" for heavy haul. We negotiate what we feel to be an appropriate rate, for every single load.

  • @kennykauffman6221
    @kennykauffman6221 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Good looking load. So what happens when DOT wants to check load securement under that tarp?

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Then we have to remove the tarps, allow them to inspect it, and re tarp once their inspection is complete. Pain in the and, but thats just the way it goes sometimes.

    • @kennykauffman6221
      @kennykauffman6221 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I heard that. I haul mostly oversize but I never have to tarp any of my loads. But every time I get DOT'ed they make sure to check securement. I always wondered if they actually make you untarp. Anyways keep up the good work!

      Awesome! It's a great gig. It's a shit ton of work, and takes a lot of dedication and patience to do well, but if you have those and some common sense, you can do very well!

    • @shareefnoble474
      @shareefnoble474 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nick Mordaunt thanks. I was wondering what is better to have a lowboy or a multi axle flatbed?

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well that all depends on what you want to do. The market for our trailer is very small. We've kind of found our niche. Having an RGN (Lowboy) will afford you the opportunity to add a bit of diversity to the things you haul. If you get stuck, you can almost always grab a piece of tracked machinery from somewhere.

    • @shareefnoble474
      @shareefnoble474 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nick Mordaunt thanks for the info. I also like your trailer as well. Reminds me when I worked for a company that had a 6 axle 45foot flatbed. Quad all in the middle, single axle by the landing gear and another single at the rear. It's commonly referred to as Michigan trains

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah those Michigan trailers have all sorts of funky things going on. They're designed to maximise the laws in MI obviously, they wouldn't necessarily work everywhere else.

    Good morning love your videos! As an up and coming driver can you please do a video about the DEF system on your truck? What to look out for and any issues it has caused. Does it affect your fuel mileage? I hear from so many operators how this system is so bad on the trucks. Also so many drivers are going with a Glider truck from a few dealers with pre-emissions engine. Next time your coming to Brunswick give me a shout would love to meet u and see the truck!

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      We've had no issues with our DEF system (knock on wood). It is hit or miss though. Some drivers, like us, are problem free...some, have thousands and thousands of dollars in repairs on them. There's no way of knowing what you're going to get, other than to get a glider and avoid it completely. Gliders are great options, as long as you do not intend to run some of the ports in NY/NJ or the state of California.

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are correct. That was definitely a mistake on my part. I'll have to go out to the truck and make sure that I change them and they are all correct. Thank you for pointing it out.

    Where did that head ache rack come from?? I like the organization and the way it's set up

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It came from Ravens Trailers in Dover, OH, but we custom designed the inside pieces and had them build it.

      @charlesdowdie121 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nick Mordaunt I'm sitting here watching the video of you going over your rig. I have always loved heavy hauling. I love rigs and trailers. Fixing to get me a gooseneck and watching your video has given me some creative ideas. I hope to see more of your videos in the near future...

    • @charlesdowdie121
      @charlesdowdie121 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nick Mordaunt I'll be finishing up your current videos during the week sometime. Those plugs on the side of the trailer for the hazard lights was a really smart idea. That was very creative and some good ingenuity. Also the binders in the rack, do they sit in a slot or are they held down somehow?

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, we don't use them very often, but when you need them, they're damn nice to have! The ones inside the two outer doors? They just hang in these big metal hook things, and we just throw a bungee on them to keep them from hopping out. I show it in the walk around video a bit better.

  • @travishelms7067
    @travishelms7067 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    just curious I'm a driver myself and iv done some flatbed and I seen u using two chains hooked together. thought they had to be one piece chain. is there different types or what not for different situations?

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      As long as all the pieces are of the same rating, there is no law against connecting two chains. We do actually have the links that permanently connect them, but we only use them if we can't connect them like I did here.

    As a user of these type rotors I would suggest that the manufacturer put at least two more cradles to rest the rotor on.
    I can see a bend occurring during transportation . Gives me the shivers.

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      They ship thousands of these a year, and they invest a lot of money to do so....I would imagine that the engineers have thought out their methods of loading / shipping pretty extensively. If there was a threat of damage, they'd have changed the way they cradle them by now.

    • @awd4g63ix

      Just some truck stop leather gloves. Nothing will truly hold up to handling chains / binders and straps all day, especially once they get wet. Just gotta have a stash of new gloves waiting in a cubby in your truck somewhere.

It's so hot out right now, that I'll probably wait to do those when it cools off, and I don't mind wearing the hard hat for that long. Right now, it's just too hot to keep that thing on.

      That was definitely a mistake on my part. I'll have to go out to the truck and make sure that I change them and they are all correct. Thank you for pointing it out. However, hooking two chains together like I did to make one chain, is perfectly legal, and just as reliable.

    Nick, Wicked Beach Boys tune - brought back the goose-bumps. It was on the charts when I was a teen. Nice to see all the fastening and tarping. How do you deal with royalties for the tunes you use ? Ralph

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      All the songs I use, the artists have given permission for people to use them on TH-cam, as long as their videos aren't monetized. So, I don't make money off the videos I put music in. Which is fine with me. Personally I think it makes them more enjoyable to watch....I never started TH-cam to make money, so, I don't care about the non-monetization factor.

    why don't you guys get a tri drive ?

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, there was really no immediate need for one. Tri-drives are most effective when the majority of what you do is off road. (If we were constantly at wind tower job sites, or mining sites that are unpaved, secondary roads). It does not benefit you at all under normal conditions, and the cost to have it installed was significantly higher than just the dead axle like we opted for. Plus, it added additional weight. Not much, but still a notable difference. We have had a couple instances where we have gotten into some thick mud, and simply dumping the last axle and locking in our 2 drive axles was plenty to get us out of those situations.

    Not that there's anything wrong with what you did there, but we very much like to see tension bindings over the vertically supported areas (the cribbing). Not that you could bend that thing with a few chains, but we spend insane amounts of time and patience cutting these to stupid tolerances and they can bend.

      Nothing in this industry is for sure. Whether the decision is to buy a truck, or a trailer, or chains and binders; everything is a gamble. You have your crystal ball that will hopefully show you that your business plan is solid enough to grant you a ROI, but at the end of the day, and as the saying goes, "no plan survives initial contact." You've just got to be able to roll with the punches and keep yourself afloat long enough to find what works for you out here. Took us a long time to find and narrow in on this gig.

    I don't think it's knowing if ull get them. in nicks other videos he says he looks for the loads that will pay him. and he will make a profit.

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's pretty hard to say what every single load pays, since we negotiate each load appropriately. Granted every load is different, so we factor in how it's being loaded, if we need to bring wood or any other special things to load it, if there are special securing requirements, how they want it tarped, where it's going, how heavy it is, how wide it is, what state permit costs will be etc...we factor ALL of that before we give our rate quote to the customer / agent.

      Thanks! That's awesome man, good luck! Best piece of advice I can give is aside from what you will need for your downpayment, make sure you have AT LEAST $10k set aside in an account that you NEVER touch. That will be your "oh shit" maintenance account. I made that mistake on my first truck, and immediate repairs almost bankrupted me. The Evo is being upgraded a bit right now; I'll for sure intro her to y'all when she's road ready again :)

    From watching your vids, I know you hate when your chains twist on you while tightening with ratchet binders. Seems like even if I get all of the twist out of the chain before storage, they ALWAYS seem to want to twist. Still love heavy haul and won't do anything else! Stay safe brotha and gorgeous rig btw!!!!!!!!!!

      Lol, I probably pay too much attention to my clothing, so I'm just a tad bit more careful with where I drape chains and the tarps. Don't get me wrong, I may not be greasy, but I'm soaked in sweat from head to toe.

    I found that if you mount that necker's knob on the inside rim of the wheel, it doesn't hit your hand so much, and you can do a spin turn a little faster.

    I've never seen such a bad job of connecting chains. Hooking 2 short chains together with hooks is totally not acceptable. You can hook the chains together using a binder but not the way you did it.

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @vincentpauley248
      @vincentpauley248 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had multiple dot officers tell me that. It's considered unsafe. I'm educated and apparently your too much of a hotshot to take a piece of advice from someone trying to save you from a violation.

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You betcha I am, especially when your "piece of advice" wasn't offered as such. A DOT officer telling you their opinion on something doesn't mean anything to me. DOT officers, much like other cops, dont know all the laws. A lot of cops feel they have the right to tell you you're not allowed to film them, or that you must provide ID when asked for it. Just because they have a badge (or embroidered shirt in the case of DOT), doesnt mean they know what they're talking about. I'm in comoliance with federal Cargo securement regulations, that's what is important.

    you should hook the chain back to itself not to the stake pocket

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Both are legal, both grant you the same securement value. It all depends on how much chain I have available, or the angle that I need the chain to be at.

    • @Aj-ro6uk
      @Aj-ro6uk 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      you're absolutly wrong,hooking the chain like you do applies all the force to one weld

    • @awd4g63ix
      @awd4g63ix  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right, however, it's still perfectly legal.

    • @thomasjefferson5727
      @thomasjefferson5727 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Aj I saw down around the stake pocket and back onto other side. A vertical up force is applied to one side, a vertical down force applied to the other. The load is on either side of pocket and more than one weld. And should the binder come loose thus hook loose, his method leaves the chain attached to the truck, your method leaves the chain on the highway.
