Thanks Diane as you can see I have them for individual series of works. Some of the concertina sketchbooks I have started to sell and you can see them on my website. It’s an ongoing process and they do change as I go although they are always intended to act as a record . Keeping the info in this format is also helpful if you don’t have huge amounts of space.
Thank you for sharing your sketchbooks and your process. The big takeaway for me is that you have different books for different experience. I'm fairly new to all this and have tended to crowd it all together in one big book- notes from diffferent courses - don't want too waste a precious page - and then it's a mishmash just like my brain!
Hi Kathe good to hear from you. I don’t think there is a right and wrong with all this so it really is whatever suits your way of working. Putting it all into one May work if you are using it in a particular way. For me, I need different ones fro different projects/purposes. I do think it helps though to have some sort of organisation so that things can be found more easily as well as the story telling aspect. Maybe have a think about what you are using the sketchbook for and then work out what different sketchbooks might work for your uses?
Great video - thank you Liz. Would love it if you did do a video on how you do your reformatted work in the books, as you say in your commentary. There is so much energy and life in all of these.
I've been questioning the same Whys and Whats in my head Liz but never write them down. Your small journals example to answer those questions accompanied by the suetcges would be a great aid memoir. Thank you for sharing your ideas so richly with your viewers.
Hi Leila I think we all have different ways of record in our thought and feelings but I really do think it’s helpful to jot things down- the whole ‘notice what you notice’ thing - I’ll be talking more about that in my course too.
Enjoying this video and taking down notes as I listen and watch. Being quite deaf, I particularly enjoy the ability to turn on CC (closed captions). Thank you so much for this consideration, Liz.
Hi Margaret oh I’m so glad it’s helpful - I’ll be doing more on these as I develop the sketchbooks. Will also make sure they are in my sketchbooks playlist so you can more easily find them. I’ll make sure I set it for captions in future too.
Just read your reply to Mary Ann and I would very much enjoy a more detailed video about your sketchbook notes. It’s so interesting as always to follow the process and individualism. Thanks Liz.😊
Hi Gilli thanks for commenting ( and giving me the title: Sketchbook notes!) . What I’ll do is continue to work in these Series sketchbooks for the next month or two then schedule a video in to share this angle on my sketchbooks - at the moment I’m evolving and developing them so will give a chance to do more.
Thanks for your fascinating detailed insight into your work. Very generous 😊 I love your sketchbooks and how you create them in all weathers! Kind regards Jacqueline
Thank you Sue I’m so glad it was helpful. Others have commented about doing another more in depth one at some point so watch out for that too. If you’ve subscribed you should be notified.
Sketchbooks are fascinating. Good video. I’m finding at the moment I only want to work in sketchbooks. Inspiring to see how organised you are with yours.
Hi Mary thanks for commenting. I totally understand that at the moment. I also think that sketchbooks can be very rich and rewarding and provide all the material for other things when/if the time is right. They are definitely more than worth the investment of time. There’s also something rather nice about their compactness!! I find that if I’m not organised then they become less useful to me so it spurs me on. I often hear and see other artists talk about dipping into them over many years and that spurs me on too!
Really enjoyed this one, Liz. It’s always such a joy to see other people’s sketchbooks and process. I only wish the handwriting in mine was as gorgeous as yours !
Thanks so much Sharon and agree that it’s always interesting to see the different approaches. Ha the handwriting is in part due to the constant practice of italic writing as a kid- the primary school I was at insisted on it then!!
Glad you enjoyed it. I’m currently working on the development of an online sketchbook course. To find out more ahead of the release: lizackerley.podia.com/your-sketchbook-journey. Subscribers will be kept informed & the early bird discount will be shared when the course is released.
Liz, I am enjoying this series of videos that parallel the development of your paintings for your upcoming show. One question I have is what do you mean by your doing analysis of the preparatory work in these sketchbooks? You point out that you make notes about the sketches but what are you looking for or culling out in those notes? I am wondering if I would benefit from doing the same in my sketchbooks but I am a bit at a loss as to what I would be looking for to make notes about. Much appreciation for your generosity in these videos.
Hi Mary Ann thank you for commenting and I’m glad you are enjoying the videos. It’s interesting that you ask these specific questions because it’s something that I thought about but realised I didn’t have time in a 15 minute video. The sort of things I write about are particular to my interests but you could do the same and apply to yours- the notes are about anything that I notice or like or have a preference for- the big question to ask yourself is: what do I notice; and why? What is it about that shape or that line etc. I hope that makes sense? Perhaps I will do a specific video about the specifics in my Series sketchbooks in the future.
@@LizAckerley I enjoyed this video. I came to you and a few of your colleagues because i wanted to develop my studio practice and particularly to focus on workbench or studio journals, along with improving a sketchbook practice. I, too, am interested in the analytical aspect of your sketchbook practice. I think my biggest lament in not training in art school is that i can't really depend on my guidance alone to develop a decent studio practice.
@@treemerryweather thank you for your comment. Sorry I don’t know your name. I think developing our studio practice is an ongoing thing that we all have to keep evolving. Over the last couple of years my sketchbook practice has changed somewhat ( it just used to be a visual diary). Now , as you will have seen, I have different sketchbooks for different purposes. I’ll try to schedule a more detailed sketchbook notes session in the future.
That was so interesting Liz. I'm just beginning to develop different sketchbooks for different purposes. How often do you go out to sketch and do you always take the same/similar kit? Also do you take photos to work from later? Thanks so much.
Hi Anne thanks for your comment - I go out drawing and Mark making relatively frequently but it depends on what I am working on and the weather. I am going to be going out frequently whilst filming for my course over the next few weeks. I find that going out frequently keeps me in the right mindset!! I used to take out a similar kit of watercolour and pens when I worked more representationally. Now I have different kit depending upon what I’m doing so for example I have a simple charcoal based kit for working in black and white and a mixed kit for working in a more mixed media way ( with acrylic paint; woodies; watercolour pencils etc- not too many of each!). I plan what I’ll do before I go out so I don’t stress myself with too many choices when I’m there! I do take photos and even video as an aide memoir but I don’t usually find I can do too much from them! That said I think it’s perfectly fine to use them in conjunction with your drawings/paintings if it works for you. Interestingly I’ll be talking about all these things on my course too. It’s all an ongoing evolving thing!
Those are beautiful sketchbooks. Your lucky to have all of them under your belt, should I say.
Thanks Diane as you can see I have them for individual series of works. Some of the concertina sketchbooks I have started to sell and you can see them on my website. I always like it at exhibitions when artists display their sketchbooks.
Agree. I think the sketchbooks are often the driving force behind the work. I couldn't be without my sketchbooks!
One of the best documentations I've seen. Thank you for sharing. WOW
You are very welcome Carly! Please do recommend my channel to others you think may enjoy !
I like the concertina sketchbooks, they are excellent.
Thanks William. I have a number of them for sale on my website now.

You are very welcome Jacqueline. The series sketchbooks tend to stay with me in the studio - I often work on paper when I’m out on location.
