      How do we identify black and red surinam plants ? Is there any difference??

    Those of us who grew up in the Dade county area are well aware of these cherries, especially the better tasting dark type. In the 60s and 70s there was no lack of loquats, sweet pink grapefruit, oranges, avocados, mangos, etc to fill our bellies so we didn't have to go home for lunch.

    Definitely a great snack fruit to have. I have the red and black and they are both flowering at the moment.

    I have the black and red varieties in my yard, both are great when fully ripe, the key is not to pick them if they don't easily come off in your hand. Both will be bitter if picked too early.

    They do well in shade. Mine flower/fruit 3 times a year and they face the north. I have a couple orange varieties that are superior. One I named orange starburst. Delicious.

    They are not my favorite but I think it's definitely an underrated fruit in FL. The red ones can be pretty nasty but I have had some rather pleasant ones as well. I picked up a Zill's Dark around 2 years ago and they are indeed MUCH better. Super sweet and good tartness and a slight green bell pepper flavor. You can pop them in the fridge over night to reduce any off flavors and I think they taste better chilled. As I understand they grow true to seed as well (assuming no cross pollination with other varieties) so I've been planting all my seeds! They can take 1 - 3 months to pop up.

    I tried the red… too tart and bad aftertaste… the black is sweeter and less tart… good overall 👍

    I had one in a 25 gallon pot here in Orlando and it produced a ton of fruit and tasted awesome. HOWEVER, it was also a Caribbean fruit fly magnet. I ended up with constant maggots in the fruit. I eventually covered it but it was just too much work to keep it maggot free. Do you have any issues with fruit fly with these in your area? I sure do in Orlando.

    The red ones are delicious when fully ripe (dark red) and come off the tree easily. Under ripe cherries taste astringent and can be a turn off to most.

    We have it in our garden and it tastes like burnt rubber... been in the ground over a year.. Are all black surinams from Zill? or is the one that you got from Zill different from the last 3 in your video?

    • @FruitfulTrees
      @FruitfulTrees  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      There are other black ones out there and I don't know how they taste but the zill are sweet

      @GonzaGardens 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      How do you know that the last 3 you recently purchased are the Zill variety? They only say "black surinam cherry" and the label looks exactly like ours.

      Many of the seedling varieties taste like grass in the best case scenario. Try a zill black

    They spelled the name wrong,it is supposed to be Surinam at least that is the way I have always seen it spelled. The picture of the cherries I have seen that were supposedly off of Zills black Surinam cherry trees were pitch black not just dark. Did got those from Zills high performance nursery in West Palm Beach? Are they air layers, seedlings, or grafted? I thought Zills only sold to retail nurseries or businesses. Thanks Paul.

      i have a red that gets loaded every year and full of worms, taste not pleasant but building the nerve to pull her since shes been here for over 30 yrs. i have 2 blacks that have been in the ground over 5 years, slow growers and not much fruit so cant judge on worm in them.

    i can afford to reap the benefits of this tree, they are doing studies on the health benefits of the dark purple variety.

    I've never eaten shit before but i suppose that's how it would taste but it do make really great juice but i hate eating the fruit itself.
