I bought 2 last year at a local nursery, they were only 3 feet tall. Now they are close to 6 feet and produce a small number but they are delicious! The flowers are very pretty, and when the turn red the tree really looks great.
Thanks for the useful information. I just bought this tree at Home Depot today. I was surprised I found it there. Along with citrus trees, they had papaya, guava, olive and avocado trees.

Just found you... excellent technicals and advice. 👍. I'm in Ocala (east), and I've got two three year old Barbados. First winter... lesson learned... died to the ground. They both popped back. Last winter: heavy mulch and tree frost bags. Poor fruiting (10 at the most). This winter, same protection and hoping for a better crop output 2025. Any ideas for improved production, or they are still recovering from last years die back? Cheers!

@jerrasgarden do you think that the Barbados cherry would grow in the Mojave desert? Thank you. I've had a very difficult time growing things in the high desert. 🙏
This cherry juice is delicious and just to eat. I didn't know that it could be caught by branch clipping. I normally see it done by seeds. Growing up, we could just get a sucker's by seed easily
Hi Jetta, I just found your channel and have a question from a fellow Floridian… I planted my Barbados cherry in June which was about a foot tall. It’s now doubled in size and really branching out. I’d like it to eventually be a tree and not a shrub so can I prune back the lower branches now or should I wait?
They are kind of hard to find. I have some rooted started plants on my website. Occasionally I notice a large plant at some FL nurseries. Check out Jene's Tropicals in St Pete.
I really enjoyed your video...I live in Long Island New York zone 7a so l was wondering do you think l can grow the Barbados Acerola tree....how long will it take to grow and produce fruit? Would love to grow it in containers and over winter it
You could grow it in a container but it is a tropical plant and does not like the cold. You will have to bring it inside during the winter. It will take a few years to start producing fruit.
Hey it's here in the Rio grande valley birds eat them there a type of heritage to the Delta Rio grande shrub and woodland, they are In the monte in the 956 area code. Also subscribed thank you so more videos of fruit plants please thank you again.
Hi Jerra, great video!!! We have two trees, about 6ft each and well trimmed. However, we only get dozen of fruits at a time from thousands of flower. How can we get fruits? The tree is really healthy with lots of green leaves and big branches. Thanks
The tree will start fruiting more as it matures. Just have to wait. It does react well to fertilizer and lots of water in the spring to mimic a tropical summer season and that usually helps trigger flowering and fruit production.
Hi Jerra, I bought my Barbados tree from Lowes. It already has cherries on it and they are turning red. Would you have a guess as to how old my tree would be? I wish I could show you a picture.
Thanks for this very comprehensive video. I bought a Barbados Cherry and a Surinam cherry small trees a couple of years ago. The Surinam cherry has produced a lot and I do not like the taste of the fruit but the Barbados Cherry has not produced yet. It produces very little flowers and they drop. I fertilize about twice a year with citrus and avocado tree fertilizer and it gets water from my sprinklers twice a week and it is planted on the side garden in the soil. Not sure what I am doing wrong 😢
Suriname cherries are more sour than Barbados cherries. The Barbados cherry will produce when its ready and mature enough to support fruit. It took mine at least 2 years to start holding on to those flowers. This is the 3rd or 4th year and its loaded.
@@JerrasGarden that gives me hope. I really like Barbados cherry, I grew up eating them in PR, I never tried Surinam cherry until after I bought the plant. If I would have known I would not bought them. Now they are food for birds 😂. Thanks.
Jerra do you recommend buying seedlings or HW cuttings of named cultivars? Also,do you recommend an online seller( s) for buying b.cherry plants? Thanks for this well done video!
This depends how good you are at rooting hard wood cuttings. If your experienced with that, then cuttings might work for you. Otherwise seedlings and plants are the way to go. They grow pretty fast too. I am glad I found your channel. I just bought a Barbados Cherries tree and I am going to plant it today. I am in north Florida near Pensacola, do I have to do anything special to protect the tree in winter?
They look delicious! Thanks for doing such a detailed explantion of everything, including the fruit! For example, I was wondering through the early part of the video what kind of seed or seeds it had, and then you not only told us, you showed us! Seeds that take up too much of the fruit are not appealing to me, so I was happy to see these only have three rather small to medium-sized seeds. Definitely interested in getting one now. I'm assuming they are self fertile?
Yes they are self fertile. If there are 2 plants next to each other or more, then they cross pollinate which does increase yields. But your still ok with just only 1 tree. I try to think about the questions I had when I was researching the fruit/plants to get for my garden. There is not a whole lot of info on some of these more tropical and rare things so I try to show everything that I know.
@@JerrasGarden Making decisions about trees and bushes when I have limited space to work with means I want to know as much as possible. So thank you again!

In my country, producers pick them before they're fully ripe, in between yellow and flush of pink. They continue ripening days after.
