    Love the podcast and glad I found it. I'm a meteorologist by training and trade, but I also have lots of audio experience from working on Radio. Suggestion: There's a little switch on your mics. Make sure the switches are set to the "/" mark. That will sharpen your voices a bit. Things sound a little muffled to me. Also, those RE-20 mics can be fitted with pop-screens to take care of the occasional "P-Popping", a common problem in Radio. Thanks Neil! Keep up this program... we need more people to be inspired to use their brains.

      @@Baleur are the articles male or female for sol Måne and Tellus? Because in german it`s the exact opposite of the roman languages and therefor the complete opposite association. So I`m wondering what it`s like in swedish

    Neil I dont think the question about gravity waves and a mile piano sting was about seeing if a piano string produces a detectable gravity wave. He is asking if we could use a mile long piano string to DETECT a gravitational disterbance in spacetime. He's asking if the gravitational disterbance would vibrate the strink.

    • @MsSomeonenew
      @MsSomeonenew 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It would certainly vibrate, but we are talking less then the size of a proton. So it would be impossible for human senses to detect, you need high precision gear and vacuum to try and eliminate all other factors.

    • @Doomroar
      @Doomroar 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh in that case it would have to be way, way longer than a mile, and at that point it would be harder to keep it tense and straight.

      if we were able to detect gravitational waves with a mile long piano string I think the gravitational waves would be strong enough to destroy earth or something like that.

    • @thekaxmax
      @thekaxmax 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup. It's not going to be sensitive enough. They barely get a response from long laser beams with detectors sensitive enough that they have to account for the gravitational effects of passing traffic.

    Btw, Transparent aluminum does exist, It is a form of aluminum that is see-through. Most commonly someone speaking about transparent aluminum is referring to AION (aluminum oxynitride), a ceramic alloy. However, aluminum can exist in an elemental, metallic form made transparent by bombarding with a soft x-ray laser.

      I love how this comment irreverently disregards the respect for antiquity shown by the decision to keep the names Latin.
      I guess that might not be clear if you're not a native English speaker. Consider if your country had an emergent technology and decided to name everything in Greek. You'd be showing reverence for something that happened in Greece.

    Where do you submit the questions for Dr. Neil Degrasse Tyson?

  • @wildlaborg
    @wildlaborg 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    At 2:12, Neil said that it is theoretically possible to travel back in time, unless some "universal law of physics preventing that". This law might be the conservation of the energy - if some object goes back in time even 1 second, this means that in the past you will have two objects (doubling the energy according to E=mc^2), while at the present, this object virtually disappear, so suddenly energy is destroyed at present, while it appear in the past - adding to already existing energy of the already existing object (for example electron, proton... atom, macro object...). My thought is that time travel is not possible.

  • @timkamp6798
    @timkamp6798 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Neil misunderstands the question at 26:11, the question is can you find gravity waves by observing a piano string, not generate them by vibrating one.

    It's too bad Dr. Tyson doesn't read these comments, but when he suggested that there may be a possibility that a weakening or stretching Higgs field could reduce the mass of particles because of the universe's rapid acceleration, my very first thought was that, this may explain the symmetry breaking that happened in the early universe, the reason why we have that inexplicable abundance of matter without its corresponding anti-matter.

  • @urbanConcept7
    @urbanConcept7 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    hey Neil, I have had a theory for years that gravity is weakening because the fabric of the universe is expanding/being stretched, the fact that this may also be diluting the higgs field also gives credence to the idea that gravity weakens over time. The higgs field being diluted is also reducing mass over time which would also reduce the effect mass has on the space time fabric too. thoughts? @startalk

    Those who are against life extension, ask yourself this: If you were to suffer a lethal injury, and a technology was available to put you into suspended animation, long enough to get you to a hospital that could save you, would you use it, or say just let me die? Life extension is really no different from just plain old life-saving medicine, just a little longer. How do you decide how long, is too long? Wouldn't your opinion change the closer you get to the end?

    This is a two year old episode, but I'm going to comment on the paradox thing. According to Neil in his episode on Avengers: Endgame, modern time travel theory says that every action creates a branch, therefore killing grandpa would just leave that universe/timeline with a dead old man. Or a dead young man. You'd still exist because your timeline hasn't been changed.

    The question was whether a mile-long piano string could be used to DETECT gravity waves, not if it would generate them. Neil, this isn't the only question you've gotten wrong in this way - answering a question but not the one that was asked. I love you, man, but it's like you gotta pay more attention to the questions. I wonder if the dude ever got his question answered.

    • @jonathantaylor7991
      @jonathantaylor7991 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      he did answer it. just sort of subtly he said it wasn't large or significant enough to be affected by the change therefore cant be used to detect them. he also said that if it Was large enough then it would have to be in space. and that would make it pointless because you wouldn't be able to detect the differences using sound which was the whole reason of using a piano string. but I understand he didn't explain well.

    So, my intuitive understanding of a causal set is that a causal set is the smallest possible scale at which the causal order holds!! Causal order because spacetime is causally ordered due to the time element of spacetime?? So, I take it that a causal set would be on the order of the Planck Scale??

    What did he mean but spacetime may have melted areas and have corresponding states of matter? I want to know what article he was referring to. It ties in with my dark matter hypothesis. I like Neil because he is the ONLY Scientist who says its really dark GRAVITY. I think dark matter is just stretch marks (melted) bits of spacetime with not matter that cause gravitational effect. That is why we can't detect anything its just empty warped spacetime that hit a yield point losing its elastic nature. Where can I find what Neil is referring to?

    People keep asking about periodicity of Tabby's Star 'structure' and wondering why astronomers don't care that they haven't found one. Consider: observations have amount to very little time (only 4 years or so, I think); our best guess is a busted-up comet; comets orbit a *long* way out - for Sol that's the Kuiper Belt 30-55AU out, which makes the periodicity about 200 years.

    In terms of science being the source of discoveries, that have improved people's lives, I think of some of the things from the Space Program such as Tang and Teflon. Yet, sadly, there are people who, because of their limited outlook on life, have no use for science. I knew a fellow once who became quite angry when he saw a broadcast on T.V. about something that N.A.S.A was doing in space; his contention being why are we messing around up there when there are children starving on Earth?

      I hear the same thing sometimes. Another argument for NASA haters, (satellites) without them we cant communicate with disaster relief, emergancy response, etc.
      Also contractors use cordless power tools that were developed by NASA because there are surprisingly no outlets in space.
      Laser eye surgery, NASA
      Like Neil said, NASA is a seed to lots of things we use but neglect to appreciate.
      If tv man is worried about feeding kids then go feed kids, NASA has already given him the tools to do so.
