I just found this show. I cant even begin to say how absolutely I love this concept. Two smart guys advancing science concepts with 3 funny people. Genius!
This was one of the greatest episodes of a talk show ive ever seen. Such an awesome balance of good comedy and intriguing scientific subject matter, really amazing how they all pulled this off. They are all geniuses in their own fields :)
Dynamite format, combining science and comedy. I'd like to see serio-comic discussions on lots of topics. This was handled well by both the professors and the comedians. Never heard of Eugene Mirman, and now I like him.
When Sarah said " i bet you get so much Pudding" and then calls out that she was told not to cuss.. this is why she is one of my favorite comics of all time. Just pure 100% classic Sarah.
Eugene mirman is the shit. he kept the whole thing alive yet gets no credit on the title or the coments. he's also really Good on bobs burgers. Eugene you rock!
“Can I ask you a question? Mars is red. How do we know that’s not all blood?” The great thing about Jim Gaffigan is, that joke is all about the cadence, timing, and delivery. It shouldn’t even be funny yet it kills the room 😂
Everyone always asks how do we get people excited and engaged about science. This video shows the perfect formula, two scientists and two to three intelligent comedians together talking about science. It's genius and takes subjects that might be abit dry and makes them very entertaining
I looked up DeGrasse Tyson on Wikipedia and learned he'd attended one of the same NYC elementary schools I did. No guff, we actually had a mini-planetarium in the basement, and I wonder if it existed when he had attended that school. We also had the occasional trip to the Hayden planetarium as kids as a day trip. I always remember the excitement about math and science I had as a kid, and am so thankful for teachers and professors in my life who shared that skill and excitement with us kids. Thanks, Neil.
The best part about this (minus all the fascinating science) is how the scientists are more entertaining than the comedians. I'm a fan of sarah silverman too :D
Ok. This is for all the over excited nerds, that keep rambling about the comedians. This format is designed, ingeniously i add, for the 90% of Americans that are ignorant to the world of science. Neil deGrasse Tyson is using this as a tool to inspire and educate the part of the human race that is holding us back from furthering our future endeavors. He is the only scientists I know of, other than I guess Bill Nye, trying to bridge the gap. He should be applauded over his efforts, not spewing nerd rage over Sarah Silverman's pussy jokes. If you have a problem with this, you're part of the problem, not the solution.
I liked the video a lot but honestly I feel sorry for Dave Grinspoon (the NASA Geologist), cause I think this event might have been an overload for him. Not every scientist can be great with audiences like Tyson or Nye. Or good at handling a conversation where they get interrupted a lot.
So true man. So much respect for NDT and others for trying different ways to educate people. All a fire needs is a few sparks and it will eventually ignite and burst to flame. Neil is the flint!
Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of the few Scientists who is able to take on the public media and looks good on it. There are only a few who are able todo this, most scientists sadly fail extremely on TV or any other medias.
Gaffigan and Mirman interrupted just the right about of times, and brought the funny big time. Silverman was respectful and pretty funny too. People on the comments love to piss and moan because they hate their lives I guess.
These fora (plural in Latin for Forum) present complex scientific topics in terms the layman can understand - and produce the kind of questions that most people would be afraid to ask aloud for fear of being laughed at. We need more of this!
I must be a nerd. I watched this video in a Jim Gaffigan search and liked it! Not a Sarah Silverman fan, but this was good. My award to quickest wit goes to Eugene though!
You know Neil deGrasse Tyson is the smartest guy on stage because he's also the one sweating the most. His brain is burning thru way more energy to be smart AND funny AND moderate the discussion.
Strange fact about you, but good to know. You may just be ignoring the fact that NDT, as a scientist, hangs around with nothing but white people all the time. Not replying to you anymore.
Oh I see, so "as a scientist" is your code for "he's too civilised to be around other black people"? Only white people can be scientists? What about famous black scientists like leading astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, for example?
Grinspoon and deGrass hold up well to comedic feedback. The talk about metric numbers at 14:23-15:50 including deGrasse out in space was memorable. Smart of him to talk in imperial numbers thereafter. Sagan was an advocate of unmanned exploratory missions for best use of limited funding. "We're not talkin' just crazy people."
How deep is your bug, how deep is your bug How deep is your bug? I really mean to learn 'Cause we're living in a world of radiation Breaking us down when it all should let us be We belong to you and me

This isn't the video to watch if you really want to learn something. The panel is ferocious about inserting their "funny" one-liners that at the halfway point, I had to turn to something else. I guess I just wasn't in the mood for a comedy show that used topics in science as the target of the jokes. Usually, with panels involving Neil deGrasse Tyson, you can expect a certain amount of levity, and that's fine. But, when the jokes and ad libs become the center point of the discussion, it's better to tune this in when you're in the mood for rather low-brow humor.
When Sarah Silverman dropped her mic, I was hoping it was for good. OH SNAP. Just kidding, she isn't that bad. I agree with you that most of the jokes were shallow and didn't offer much in the way of profound thought.
The target audience is not for the intelligentsia. Its trying to appeal to a larger audience. This could actually be a hit on prime time tv. Neil has long lamented about the ignorant electorate. We need to educate the masses about all things science. What better way is there. I submit this is spot on. Love it. You go Neil! NGT is my hero!

The jokes and expressions of Eugene are priceless. So bad we missed the fallen cup at 13:58 XD.. OMG!! At 14:10 he just realizes he dropped it and looks at Sarah and is about to show her and then he keeps it to himself. LOL
This was fun to watch! I'd like it if the comedians had a bit more time to chime in and Sarah seems like she's at a loss for words most of the time, but there was good chemistry here and I think more segments like this will go smoother.
I cringed through 10 minutes of the video watching a group of comedy rejects on stage. Neil with his fake nervous laughter sweating bullets was completely obvious that he was uncomfortable.
I would have liked this better had more of the comedians' interruptions been more relevant to what the scientists were trying to say, [instead of] throwing them off of their train of thought in typical ADHD fashion. New law whereas we are smart people, we declare that the United States does not have to get involved in countries where limbs are cut off women don’t have rights and gays are hanged
The really smart people know that NASA is mostly military/defense-oriented. Just most of it is not obvious to most. Neil wrote a book about it, even. About time there's a popular book addressing the issue. It's something I've been saying since I was a kid in the 80s. I'm going to go out on a limb, though, and guess that his book just scratches the surface, but I haven't read it yet.
