5tonyvvvv actually it’s the other way around. Religious folks like to ridicule scientists and scientists just present objective facts and let you form your own opinion. Dr. Tyson does this beautiful thing where he, in his own conversation style, tell you if he has an authority over a particular subject or not. If he is does indeed have authority over a particular subject, he not only knows his stuff but he is confident in that knowledge, to a point that even the smartest of the people might end up looking like baffoons. In this episode I was so awestruck that Dr. Tyson, despite his brilliance and vast pool of wisdom, never ever hesitated once to say that Dr. Paul's acumen about multiverse is perhaps more refined and deep. That ability to admit that I don't know everything but I would love someone who's an expert to teach me is just so awe inspiring and this humility makes me such an ardent follower of Dr. Tyson. PS. I so wish you'd talked with Paul more about what the hell is dark matter and dark energy. 2 days ago I was thinking how a big bang did not make sense to me and since everything is about energy, vibration that the universe then would have to beat like a heart and go through a systole and diastole period and now comes this talk. Awesome!!! The universe is pulsating, it’s alive.
One of my favorite parts of the video is when Neil asks Paul, "Does your chair have an endowed name to it?" When Paul responds, "It's called The Albert Einstein Professorship in Science" Neil says, "Excuse the hell out of me!"
I like these in-depth detailed talks. I learn about things that I don't really understand, but kind of get, but would not know without spending hours and hours reading textbooks and papers.
So at around 9:50 the Professor starts explaining what I like to call the "hand grenade universe" -- where our entire observable universe is just one shard of shrapnel being thrown clear of a much bigger expansion.
Grizabeebles If you are referring to a classical level 1 multi-verse without a localized big bang, where in we are a pocket fluctuation of a larger energy dispersing big bang, then yes it is an interesting idea. We run into the idea that the information we are judging to be immensely large is in fact a small byproduct. It shifts the scaling of the problem of the uniformity we see through out our visible verse. Never a fan of level 1 multi-verses but this style of one is a subject I've been wanting to explore more.
+Bob Mack -- I think that's what I'm referring to. I'm referring specifically to matter in the early universe fragmenting as it expanded from the original Big Bang the way a grenade's casing becomes lethal shrapnel when the grenade explodes. If you've ever seen those slow-motion videos of a hand grenade/pressurized container or melon exploding (I recommend the Slow-mo guys) it keeps surprising me that matter of a uniform mass, density, pressure and temperature can "catastrophically fail" with such wildly _non-uniform_ results when enormous pressure is applied. I understand that the Big Bang is not an "explosion" of the kind we're used to on earth. Rather than a high-pressure gas being created and trying to escape (or obliterate) some container, it's space itself expanding and average energy density decreasing. Still though, I'm aware of absolutely no reason to expect a uniform expansion of either space or the energy within. The matter we see around us could just be the cosmic equivalent of smoke and unburned gunpowder. I'm just a layman, but this type of non-uniform expansion feels consistent with the idea of the "big rip" and gives a starting place for attacking the "missing antimatter" and "dark energy" problems. Plus, it relieves some of my existential terror at the thought that the entire galaxy is _still_ spreading out and cooling like a dropped bowl of soup.

Here's a thought - Q: How many clothes do you wear in a single day? How many layers of clothes do you wear (depending on the weather)? A: Most likely, two sets of clothes, not including the set of clothes you went to sleep in the previous night. Q: Do you wear the same clothes on a daily basis, as in - the same shirt, t-shirt, pants, etc? A: You don't, obviously but you do eventually end up wearing the same pair of clothes (underwear, socks) paired with a different set of clothes (shirt, pants, dress, etc.) Q: Would you be able to calculate the precise number of each fibre/fiber (I use British spelling, do apologize) each article of clothing you're wearing contains? A: Maybe, but it would take you a very long time. Q: All these articles of clothing represent one universe and each fibre/fiber/strand in each article of your clothes represent a solar system, AND the entire ensemble covers your physical body, the foundation upon which these different universes and solar systems rest upon. As you grow up, from the time you are a newborn up until your physical peak, your body is in a constant state of expansion. When you pass a particular threshold, your body begins to shrink in a way. You age and you die. Before you die, parts of your body break down or lose functionality/mobility or feeling. Are you able to picture this? Before you are born, millions upon millions of sperm re-enact a "big bang", in a very scientific an alchemic manner of speaking. Out of so much spermatozoa, one sperm meets the ovum. Picture an equivalent amount of eggs being fertilized by 150 million sperm. It would be hard to imagine, no? But here's the thong - humans have been around on Earth for a very long time. Each man and woman is an entire universe. He AND she is then able to create, construct, destroy or deconstruct another person or a group of people by virtue of his or her own position. You could be a mother who nurtures and grows the talents of your child. You could be that same child who deconstructs the value of your father and devalue his meaning in your life. Your mother could be your Jupiter and your father could be your Pluto. Yet, instead of planets, we look at each planet as a functioning solar system because we each come into contact with so many people who become our friends, family members, foes, mentors, etc. Each individual operating within the boundaries he or she sets for him/herself, yet the likelihood of gravitating towards or away from people, just like how when astronomers look up, they are able to see how the entire cosmos (the foundation of the multiverse) moves about. Even when we die, we live on. Just like the universe at a plural level and the multiverse at a singular level. If this allegory confuses you, look for the answer in front of you.
The Greek word that they are trying to say is the "Ekpyrotic universe" and you can understand why: Ekpyrotic comes from the words Ek + pyro = so a Universe "from fire" In *actual* actual Greek the word is the εκπυρωτικό (ekpirotikoo) σύμπαν (universe) with the word being intonated at the "ko" syllable. :)
I’ve spent at least 35 minutes watching the first 13 minutes of this video because i have to keep rewinding and listening and trying to wrap my mind around what this man is saying.
I LOVED this video. But that conversation ,and the sheer thought of what was said beginning at 39:00, made my mind explode with awe. Mind blown and now it's lost in the cosmos
Neil with his "scissor paper stone"....😂 I'm with Chuck on that one lol always been "rock paper scissors" where I'm from 😊 ✊✋👉 (there isn't a "scissors" hand emoji)
"At some point there was nothing..." -> "That's a presumption." -> "That's a presumption, which we can question." (see from 14:38): Thank goodness we are discussing real science here, where we are actually allowed to question that which is proposed. This makes a refreshing change actually, compared to other areas of science (which I shall not name here).
I guess "uniform" is too vague of a term. I've often relied on the point you're making, though I know Dr. Tyson often likes to emphasize similarities in things we presume to be opposed from each other.
Isn't that the entire point of the multiverse theory they were discussing? The "patches" that we call the universe are small, uniform areas in a larger metaverse.
Neil deGrasse Tyson no it isn't just the measurement that collapses the state! While it isn't "consciousness", if the measurement information is destroyed before it can be seen then the original quantum system remains (or an interference pattern is still seen). So it's more than just measurement, it's about the information being available. It's a mystery that we do not yet understand. The way you tell the story is that the mystery is solved but it is not.
Xavier Bell me to, I feel the same! I watch star talk because Neil explains it in a way I can understand. But seems like he is too busy understanding in order to explain. So sad. I'll try watching it again later maybe to see if I can absorb at that point
The delay is horrible on this video. Rebooted phone, no updates available and cleared cache. Can't make it good. Sorry live watching these, but can't with delay.
I like listening to this show because a healthy dose of humility does a soul good. Normally I think I’m fairly smart and competent, so feeling utterly brain dead from time to time is motivating.
Am I misunderstanding how gravity works? th-cam.com/video/Qd28YfV5ZAY/w-d-xo.htmlm36s If the matter was already there, just not formed into a planet yet, wouldn't the total mass of all the matter that would make up earth in the future still have the same total effect on gravity from so many light years away? I very well could be wrong on this because I don't know much about gravity. That's why I'm asking.
Bob Moreno II i was thinking exactly the same. let's say if the mass was already within our solar system, just spread out instead of clumped together, it would look practically the same (in terms of gravity) if you look from very far away.
shrone dobson Ok, now what if you take those clothes and the bed and the house and the planet and the whole solar system, and "observe" from 1,000,000,000 light years away, could you tell if those clothes are lumped together or spread across the bed?
I'm not even upset the ad in this video was over four minutes. It was a nice, peaceful viola solo. Much better than Alex Becker yelling at you stating that he's mad.
Got to get that ad revenue somehow, no matter how annoying it is for us viewers, I miss the old TH-cam which was not controlled by advertising and money, but on the other hand I am glad that really hard working and incredibly talented content creators can not only create show and share their content, but can actually make a living and profit off of what they love to do, ultimately, as much as I sincerely hate these motherfucking ads, I guess it's a fair price to pay if it means my favorite content creators can make money off of their creations, but idk that is just what I think and feel
For some reason this vid has a 5 second delay with the sound. I realise that sound travels much slower than light - but 2 feet between me and my computer screen doesn't account for this delay.
Probably some kind of time dilation.
Were you moving at close to the speed of light relative to your computer screen by any chance?
same. it works fine on my phone but not on my laptop. the video didn't start from the actual beginnning
rather than a delay the video just doesn't start right away - unless you're having another issue, as after the intro pic the sound and video was fine.

I looked and damn I’m still convinced that’s more of a spiritual point of view
Also, not that there’s anything wrong with that

The Greek word that they are trying to say is the "Ekpyrotic universe" and you can understand why: Ekpyrotic comes from the words Ek + pyro = so a Universe "from fire"
In *actual* actual Greek the word is the εκπυρωτικό (ekpirotikoo) σύμπαν (universe) with the word being intonated at the "ko" syllable. :)
I’ve spent at least 35 minutes watching the first 13 minutes of this video because i have to keep rewinding and listening and trying to wrap my mind around what this man is saying.
My favorite topic
I LOVED this video. But that conversation ,and the sheer thought of what was said beginning at 39:00, made my mind explode with awe. Mind blown and now it's lost in the cosmos
I wana taste your juice
What do we call this bouncing universe? How about Dave? Definitely hope to see more of Paul Steinhardt on Star Talk!
U mean " Allegedly Dave " ?
Best show so far.
Fkin hilarious Neil said "i bailed you out on this one" 😂🤣😁 i was thinking the same thing.
Tyson is so skilled at breaking down complex things and making them easy to understand.
Neil with his "scissor paper stone"....😂 I'm with Chuck on that one lol always been "rock paper scissors" where I'm from 😊 ✊✋👉 (there isn't a "scissors" hand emoji)
NellyBoy 86.0 ✌🏼(I win) bahahahha

Sharm Nagrume 😂😂😂 fair enough....although to me that represents peace not scissors...but Al give you that one here....."W" 👏👏👏
Faegir Volva that's just scissors....not scissors hands...and ones a guitar....nahhhh the other dude wins 😂😂😂💯
Maybe the universe is not uniform, maybe we're just looking at too small of a sample to know, thoughts?
I guess "uniform" is too vague of a term. I've often relied on the point you're making, though I know Dr. Tyson often likes to emphasize similarities in things we presume to be opposed from each other.
Isn't that the entire point of the multiverse theory they were discussing? The "patches" that we call the universe are small, uniform areas in a larger metaverse.
7PlayingWithFire7 sure kid, thats why we see all those autistic astronomers and astrophysicists in the world hahahahaha XD
Haiji um...you know what ima let u remain in ignorance...
C Boom good arguement, loved all your examples
Chuck and Neil are the best
Neil deGrasse Tyson no it isn't just the measurement that collapses the state! While it isn't "consciousness", if the measurement information is destroyed before it can be seen then the original quantum system remains (or an interference pattern is still seen).
So it's more than just measurement, it's about the information being available.
It's a mystery that we do not yet understand. The way you tell the story is that the mystery is solved but it is not.
We need Paul to come back! He is such a great communicator
“The multiverse destroyed one of my favorite ideas” muahahahaha
Best episode ever. Mind = BLOWN
I listen to this and at the end I realize that I don't understand anything that was just said
Xavier Bell me to, I feel the same! I watch star talk because Neil explains it in a way I can understand. But seems like he is too busy understanding in order to explain. So sad. I'll try watching it again later maybe to see if I can absorb at that point
We are like Chuck nice when he said "What the hell are you talking about" LOL
Definitely need Chuck
Favorite channel by far blows my mind evertime
The delay is horrible on this video. Rebooted phone, no updates available and cleared cache. Can't make it good.
Sorry live watching these, but can't with delay.
Absolutely brilliant episode! Can everyone stop hating on Chuck, hes hilarious!
How do I ask questions on Twitter? Just @StarTalkRadio?
Narus Ferree i know on patreon you can atleast, dont know twitter
I like listening to this show because a healthy dose of humility does a soul good. Normally I think I’m fairly smart and competent, so feeling utterly brain dead from time to time is motivating.
So, Marvel Comics may actually be onto something. I sure hope we never come across and entity like Galactus.
Marvel Comics and DC Comics and All Science Fiction got their Ideas from the Theories of the Multiverse.
Ilikeclapping Blah lol if you only knew how truth is much stranger than fiction.
Dude... The Great Attractor is Galactus!
MCU did NOT come up with ANYTHING.
@@Nautilus1972 sure, Hulk was Stan Lee's neighbor and Iron Man used to play checkers with Jack Kirby
chuck nice is the man
I hate when these get uploaded like this because I believe that they're new, but I heard this a couple months ago on Startalk.net
+Emma Pesotski you can watch video the night most episodes air at StarTalkAllAccess.com
Chuck is TH-cam Gold
32:00 hahahahaaaa your wife is smarter than you ... The only time NDY had no argument lol
Chuck Nice with the Aspirin!!! Thank you brother!
Am I misunderstanding how gravity works? th-cam.com/video/Qd28YfV5ZAY/w-d-xo.htmlm36s
If the matter was already there, just not formed into a planet yet, wouldn't the total mass of all the matter that would make up earth in the future still have the same total effect on gravity from so many light years away?
I very well could be wrong on this because I don't know much about gravity. That's why I'm asking.
Bob Moreno II i was thinking exactly the same. let's say if the mass was already within our solar system, just spread out instead of clumped together, it would look practically the same (in terms of gravity) if you look from very far away.
shrone dobson
Ok, now what if you take those clothes and the bed and the house and the planet and the whole solar system, and "observe" from 1,000,000,000 light years away, could you tell if those clothes are lumped together or spread across the bed?
Best episode i have seen so far. Mind blowing...
To think that these people get paid to think!
I think all the time but get no money for it.
Same here
I'm not even upset the ad in this video was over four minutes. It was a nice, peaceful viola solo. Much better than Alex Becker yelling at you stating that he's mad.
"What is outside of the simulation ?" - Elon Musk
Another simulation ‘,:\
The look on chucks face at 39:17 is priceless lol. There was a moment of realization and then the “holy”
Lol Neil loves saying "Quantum" before every word
I love you guy. I bought your book and have read it a thousand times and listened to it too
So, instead of one universe emerging from The Bang, innumerable universes (patches) are formed. More buck for your bang??
Thankyou for full episode
Glad you enjoyed it! There's loads more full episodes, exclusive content and more at StarTalkAllAccess.com - Ben, Video Producer
Dem add breaks though...
AJZulu you survived little broke bitch
Got to get that ad revenue somehow, no matter how annoying it is for us viewers, I miss the old TH-cam which was not controlled by advertising and money, but on the other hand I am glad that really hard working and incredibly talented content creators can not only create show and share their content, but can actually make a living and profit off of what they love to do, ultimately, as much as I sincerely hate these motherfucking ads, I guess it's a fair price to pay if it means my favorite content creators can make money off of their creations, but idk that is just what I think and feel
I hooked on Star Talk now ! Lol..
