pistolpedro007 I don't fret about much. Played drums for 40 years - so I recognize his talent. Just saying in my opinion he doesn't get the credit he deserves.
Performed for 'Concerts for the People of Kampuchea'. I remember flipping out over this version of Armagideon Time - Joe's passion, his howling, his earnestness, and the snarly "Use a Calculator!!' towards the end in response to the statement 'A lot of people won't get no supper tonight....'. The Clash ranking among the top 3 greatest influences in my life. Loved that I got to see them in concert twice. RIP Joe
Got it on Video off the telly 'Rock for Kampuchea' rang a bell... really need to get out more...I actually play a good live version with my band Suicyanide ... love it ! X
Spoke to Joe and a month later he was gone. My only regret is not knowing at the time. But what else would you say anyway. Ya know? RIP Joe. Peace to all in the chat. What are we gonna do now?
I saw this on telly back in 1981........it was the first time I happened to see the clash on screen........I already had the first two records but not london calling.......not yet....
A peak moment in Clash history. I love their dramatic version of this tune, which pointed me towards the equally brilliant original by Willie Williams. What a riddim!
@@Neearmlook up "Real rock riddim" lots of different cuts ,I'm a big reggae DJ and I love the clash version of Willie Williams cut Armageddon time on the Studio 1 label 👍
Everything is perfect here, Joe pathos, Topper drumming like a God, Paul reggae soul, Mick's melody line, Gallagher'sorgan I could have this for hours...
back when I was just a drummer I would do soundchecks of Topper's AT beat, it's as fresh today as it was in the late 70's-early 80's. his talent and contribution to that band is immeasurable.
I loved their reggae stuff like One More Time more than their other stuff, Armagideon Time was my favourite Clash Song. The riddim is used in a lot of reggae songs. It’s called The Real Rock riddim. First version is Real Rock by Sound Dimension in 1968. The producer was the legendary Coxsone Dodd. Still owe The Clash, cause they made me listen to dub and reggae. ❤
Seen them in 1980 in Cardiff they were amazing, I was a mere 14 and prayed to JJ Burnel (he was God then) that I would get in to the gig. I did and never to be forgotten. This is one my fave Clash songs I used to play it over and over on parents 'record player'. It was B side to London Calling but far superior in my view.
The Clash. I've seen them all. Really. But nothng ever compared to the sheer magnificence of a Clash gig. Utterly life affirming. And has there ever been a better, cooler looking band? Not for me. Amazing. RIP Joe, always missed.
Wish I had seen them. They toured a lot late 70´s, I could possibly had a chance. Too young and lazy back then. If I should mention one band I wanted to have seen it is The Clash!
Hearing Strummer mangle the lyrics in the first verse reminds me of how on our way to see the Clash play we used to love speculating what songs they would choose and what lyrics Joe Strummer would get badly wrong. I know I am biased when I say this but they really did live up to their reputation as one of the best ever live bands.
Initially my favourite Punk band to probably my favourite band to what they evolved to. I bought this 12 inch B side to London Calling the day it was released in Small Wonder records in Hoe Street Walthamstow. For me this song is about injustice, drawing a short straw in whatever way. Be optimistic, be positive, keep on keeping on.
Oddly enough one of my all time favourite Clash songs. Used to play it a few times before I went out on friday night to put me into a cool mood. Always reminds me of Christmas.
Sick.. never seen that and it is amazing.. Topper on point, Mick on point, Paul sitting below perfectly and Joe squeezing out the last drop of soul. Very nice.
When I was a teenager, I remember walking to school in the snow listening to this in my cd player and thinking about life. When I was about 16 though, I listened to it on my new ipod.
I had the rock for Kampuchea record .everything about this recording is mesmerising ,all held together by what seems like perfect drumming . Tried to play along with it so many times with my les Paul copy .this performance does not age or lose it’s magic . So much better than a watermelon sugar high Harry .
I remember when this album came out. Next door neighbor who was older than me had it. I borrowed it and went nuts over this song. Ian Dury tracks too. Brings back so many memories. Clash meant so much to me.
I remember watching this on television on a cold Sunday night live in what feels like a century ago and thinking how brilliant this version is. The only band that mattered, RIP Joe.
One of the best PUNK bands ever. Topper a brilliant 👏 sticks man. I like the bassist brilliant Clash. Westway my old Manor, Edgware Rd. Uk 😆 London Uk 🇬🇧
The Clash - the first live band I ever saw...and still the best!!! If it's gonna come close, I need to feel the energy and hear that bassline...but these guys also had conscious credibility second to NONE!!!

Always loved the way the original's lyric of "remember to praise Jah-hov-iah" was replaced by Joe to "remember to kick it over" in The Clash's cover of the song.
The Clash invented the future of rock music, I cannot believe the utter genius of these guys when Topper was on board. Strummer was the greatest lyricist since Pete Townshend or Roger Waters...or Lennon.
Earl. I just want to point out two things. (1) This is a straight up reggae song with no discernible rock and roll in it. (2) Specifically, the Clash are performing their cover of the original Armageddon Time reggae song that was first recorded by Willie William. This song was written by Wilbert Keith Williams, Jackie Mittoo and Clement "Sir Coxsone" Dodd. Dodd is the founder of the famous Studio One in Kingston, Jamaica, where the Wailers with Bob Marley, first auditioned.
Topper, very underrated drummer.
underrated by who? he is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest drummers
Topper could play any style, most with any knowledge would realise this, so don't fret he isn't underated
pistolpedro007 I don't fret about much. Played drums for 40 years - so I recognize his talent. Just saying in my opinion he doesn't get the credit he deserves.
LedFingers Like your yin yang dude. Was not trying to be antagonistic, just that anyone that knows music would not underrate Topper Headon. Peace :)
I am a drummer and a huge Clash fan and I totally agree!
Topper is just some piece of work, they wouldn't have been half the band they were without him
Yeah, Joe said that himself. The Clash went downhill after Topper was given the boot.
I wonder if the base player was just as important.
Go listen to this with the other drummer. Doesn’t swing half as much
To be fair, half the band would have been enough
By far the best musician in The Clash as Joe once said . He could play jazz ,funk etc ,and could play both guitar and piano.
I envy you brother! RESPECT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if te whole concert was filmed... Probably. Where the hell are the rushes !?
Spoke to Joe and a month later he was gone. My only regret is not knowing at the time. But what else would you say anyway. Ya know? RIP Joe. Peace to all in the chat. What are we gonna do now?

This is the most haunting, and, frankly best recorded version. I thought this when the record came out, and still do.
The greatest band of all time. I saw them in Blackburn in 1980 when they played this song awesome. RIP Joe
I was there too..Also from Bburn..🤣
Was there from Clitheroe.. saw them twice at KGH .. Arthur Scargils Xmas party in Brixton also
Everything is perfect here, Joe pathos, Topper drumming like a God, Paul reggae soul, Mick's melody line, Gallagher'sorgan I could have this for hours...
When I saw this performance in Concerts for the people of Kampuchea it opened doors to music that would later change my life
Saw it on TV around 1980 as a kid.. big stuff then and still something now 👍🏼 Joe RIP🙏🏽

Amazing artistry. I did manage to have supper tonight. So many more won’t. Blessins.

ITS UNREAL HOW IN LOVE I AM
check out the original Willie Williams
Sometimes it just feels good to be in love, especially if you haven't been in love for awhile...💔💘💖
@@garyhosty9874 Yuck.. Willie Williams *Sucks* 👎
@@garyhosty9874 I am listening it rignt now: a very good reggae; goodsbreaks. Not elecrifyng as the clash one.
A haunting version of a brilliant song ,so lucky to have seen The Clash live, best live band bar none. God bless you Joe.
Topper up there with Can drummer Jaki...total respect
This tune is still my time machine back to my youth ❤

One of the best video versions I've seen. I love it.
This is one of the best things ive found on youtube ever! Ace quality for 1979. Its 100% full on with the clash from the minute they step on stage
The Paul's bass is fucking brilliant!
Awesome ❤
Big Up The Clash!!! The sounds of my youth. 21 August, Joe Strummer woulda been 62. *RIP*
We are 4 years later and he would have been 66 today. Damn how the world needs his music more than ever... Still miss him every day....

Everyone talking about Topper some about bassist but the genius in this band was Joe Strummer no doubt about it.
This is the one of the best performnaces ever!

Fantastic performance!! Especially Topper Headon.
Beautiful. Just got back from Jamaica. What an influence the Reggae scene had on this band.
Was amazed to hear this gem on Radio recently! Great lyrics and melody.

Thanks for posting this treasure! Cheers from SP/Brazil!
Saw them at the Lyceum ,81 .Best live band ever from first tune to encores a couple of hours later an exhilarating rush,
My favorite version of my favorite cover version. Ever.

Classic Clash, so musically gifted and politically aware.
great video with the shadow of mick Jones at the end
The way he play guitar makes me think of Jackson pollocks painting
What can i say ive listened to The Clash since 1978 & it just doesn't get better than this.........fucking awesome!

... Paul Simonon: the best punk-ska bassist ever!!!
he does a good bass line :-) better than I ever could
Sorry to break your illusion, but Paul NEVER was even less than mediocre bass player..
@@Clash_CT_Rocker69 Okay little kid. If you don't like the music then perhaps you shouldn't be listening to your parents' music.
Before Paul most bass players were the boring bloke who stood at the back ,not him - hence The Clash had THREE frontmen .
Saw CLASH on farewell tour @ SFX hall Dublin 1984 😎 ..... "Armeddion time" classic 😎 .... Joe Strummer gone but not forgotten 👃➕.
I was lucky enough to see them live..I miss Strummer like crazy.
